  text: We contribute to the theoretical understanding of randomized search heuristics
    for dynamic problems. We consider the classical graph coloring problem and investigate
    the dynamic setting where edges are added to the current graph. We then analyze
    the expected time for randomized search heuristics to recompute high quality solutions.
    This includes the (1+1) EA and RLS in a setting where the number of colors is
    bounded and we are minimizing the number of conflicts as well as iterated local
    search algorithms that use an unbounded color palette and aim to use the smallest
    colors and - as a consequence - the smallest number of colors. We identify classes
    of bipartite graphs where reoptimization is as hard as or even harder than optimization
    from scratch, i. e. starting with a random initialization. Even adding a single
    edge can lead to hard symmetry problems. However, graph classes that are hard
    for one algorithm turn out to be easy for others. In most cases our bounds show
    that reoptimization is faster than optimizing from scratch. Furthermore, we show
    how to speed up computations by using problem specific operators concentrating
    on parts of the graph where changes have occurred.

  text: Research has shown that for many single-objective graph problems where optimum
    solutions are composed of low weight sub-graphs, such as the minimum spanning
    tree problem (MST), mutation operators favoring low weight edges show superior
    performance. Intuitively, similar observations should hold for multi-criteria
    variants of such problems. In this work, we focus on the multi-criteria MST problem.
    A thorough experimental study is conducted where we estimate the probability of
    edges being part of non-dominated spanning trees as a function of the edges’ non-domination
    level or domination count, respectively. Building on gained insights, we propose
    several biased one-edge-exchange mutation operators that differ in the used edge-selection
    probability distribution (biased towards edges of low rank). Our empirical analysis
    shows that among different graph types (dense and sparse) and edge weight types
    (both uniformly random and combinations of Euclidean and uniformly random) biased
    edge-selection strategies perform superior in contrast to the baseline uniform
    edge-selection. Our findings are in particular strong for dense graphs.

  text: The $$\textbackslash mathcal NP$$-hard multi-criteria shortest path problem
    (mcSPP) is of utmost practical relevance, e.~g., in navigation system design and
    logistics. We address the problem of approximating the Pareto-front of the mcSPP
    with sum objectives. We do so by proposing a new mutation operator for multi-objective
    evolutionary algorithms that solves single-objective versions of the shortest
    path problem on subgraphs. A rigorous empirical benchmark on a diverse set of
    problem instances shows the effectiveness of the approach in comparison to a well-known
    mutation operator in terms of convergence speed and approximation quality. In
    addition, we glance at the neighbourhood structure and similarity of obtained
    Pareto-optimal solutions and derive promising directions for future work.

    presented by directly investigating the tradeoff between the fraction of failed
    runs and the average runtime. Multi-objective indicators operating in the bi-objective
    space allow for an overall performance comparison on a set of instances paving
    the way for instance-based automated algorithm selection techniques.

  text: The Arburg Plastic Freeforming (APF) is an additive manufacturing process
    that allows three-dimensional, thermoplastic components to be produced in layer
    by layer. The components are generated by depositing fine, molten plastic droplets.
    One of the main advantages of the APF process is the open machine control. Thus,
    the process parameters can be adapted and optimized for the individual applications.
    The optimization is carried out on the basis of a variation of the process parameters
    using a statistical design of experiments. Relevant process parameters are the
    layer thickness, the form factor, the raster and delta angle as well as the overlap
    between the contour and the filling of a layer. In addition, the nozzle and build
    chamber temperatures are varied. Using this procedure, the effects of the influencing
    parameters on the mechanical properties and the interactions between the influencing
    parameters are analyzed and converted into mathematical models. On the basis of
    the results and the models, guidelines will be developed to assist the user of
    APF technology in the systematic process configuration for their own applications.
    The material used is ABS, one of the most frequently used amorphous thermoplastics
    in additive manufacturing. The mechanical properties are determined on the basis
    of tensile tests and the characteristic values tensile strength, elongation at
    break and Young's modulus. The results should show the performance of the APF
    technology in regard to the mechanical properties.

  text: <jats:p>This paper studies the performance of improper Gaussian signaling
    (IGS) over a 2-user Rayleigh single-input single-output (SISO) interference channel,
    treating interference as noise. We assume that the receivers have perfect channel
    state information (CSI), while the transmitters have access to only statistical
    CSI. Under these assumptions, we consider a signaling scheme, which we refer to
    as proper/improper Gaussian signaling or PGS/IGS, where at most one user may employ
    IGS. For the Rayleigh fading channel model, we characterize the statistical distribution
    of the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio at each receiver and derive closed-form
    expressions for the ergodic rates. By adapting the powers, we characterize the
    Pareto boundary of the ergodic rate region for the 2-user fading IC. The ergodic
    transmission rates can be attained using fixed-rate codebooks and no optimization
    is involved. Our results show that, in the moderate and strong interference regimes,
    the proposed PGS/IGS scheme improves the performance with respect to the PGS scheme.
    Additionally, we numerically compute the ergodic rate region of the full IGS scheme
    when both users can employ IGS and their transmission parameters are optimized
    by an exhaustive search. Our results suggest that most of the Pareto optimal points
    for the 2-user fading IC channel are attained when either both users transmit
    PGS or when one transmits PGS and the other transmits maximally improper Gaussian
    signals and time sharing is allowed.</jats:p>

  text: Recent years have seen the emergence of physical products that are digitally
    networked with other products and with information systems to enable complex business
    scenarios in manufacturing, mobility, or healthcare. These “smart products”, which
    enable the co-creation of “smart service” that is based on monitoring, optimization,
    remote control, and autonomous adaptation of products, profoundly transform service
    systems into what we call “smart service systems”. In a multi-method study that
    includes conceptual research and qualitative data from in-depth interviews, we
    conceptualize “smart service” and “smart service systems” based on using smart
    products as boundary objects that integrate service consumers’ and service providers’
    resources and activities. Smart products allow both actors to retrieve and to
    analyze aggregated field evidence and to adapt service systems based on contextual
    data. We discuss the implications that the introduction of smart service systems
    have for foundational concepts of service science and conclude that smart service
    systems are characterized by technology-mediated, continuous, and routinized interactions.

  text: We tackle a bi-objective dynamic orienteering problem where customer requests
    arise as time passes by. The goal is to minimize the tour length traveled by a
    single delivery vehicle while simultaneously keeping the number of dismissed dynamic
    customers to a minimum. We propose a dynamic Evolutionary Multi-Objective Algorithm
    which is grounded on insights gained from a previous series of work on an a-posteriori
    version of the problem, where all request times are known in advance. In our experiments,
    we simulate different decision maker strategies and evaluate the development of
    the Pareto-front approximations on exemplary problem instances. It turns out,
    that despite severely reduced computational budget and no oracle-knowledge of
    request times the dynamic EMOA is capable of producing approximations which partially
    dominate the results of the a-posteriori EMOA and dynamic integer linear programming
    strategies.

    presented by directly investigating the tradeoff between the fraction of failed
    runs and the average runtime. Multi-objective indicators operating in the bi-objective
    space allow for an overall performance comparison on a set of instances paving
    the way for instance-based automated algorithm selection techniques.

  text: 'Es existieren bisher zahlreiche Studien, die das Potenzial von Augmented
    Reality (AR) in verschiedenen Bildungsbereichen und seine Auswirkungen auf die
    Lernenden hinsichtlich ihrer erhöhten Motivation, verbesserter Lernfähigkeit,
    Konzentration auf das Thema usw. hervorheben. Dabei eignen sich AR-Anwendungen
    sowohl für den Einsatz in formellen, als auch informellen Lernumgebungen und Bildungsinstitutionen,
    beginnend mit Kunstkursen in Vorschulen über Biologie, Geschichte, Chemie, Physik
    etc. in weiterführenden Schulen und Universitäten [1]. Trotz der steigenden Zahl
    an Studien liegen nur wenigen AR-Anwendungen ein geeignetes didaktisches Konzept
    zu Grunde. Ferner fehlen allgemeine Studien, die die lernfördernden Eigenschaften
    von AR im Bereich der Vorbereitung und Begleitung von Laborpraktika untersuchen.
    Aktuelle Anwendungen erweitern lediglich gedruckte Lerninhalte mit zusätzlichen
    Links, Videos oder statischen 3D-Modellen oder benötigen spezielle Voraussetzung
    für die Nutzung der AR-Anwendung [2]. Der vorliegende Beitrag untersucht und konzentriert
    sich daher auf ein didaktisches Konzept für eine auf mobilen Geräten basierende
    AR-Anwendung (App) zum Erwerb und zur Vertiefung praktischer Fertigkeiten im Umgang
    mit elektrotechnischen Laborgeräten und -komponenten. In einer früheren Arbeit
    wurden die Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der AR-Technologie in der Ingenieurausbildung
    mit besonderem Fokus auf Laborarbeit untersucht, um häufige Fehler im Designkonzept
    zu vermeiden. Das didaktische Grundkonzept beruht auf dem „Constructive Alignement“
    nach Biggs [3] mit der Definition der drei obligatorischen Schritte: Lernziele,
    Lehr- / Lernaktivitäten und Prüfungsmethoden. Die Lernziele werden –  angelehnt
    an die modifizierte Bloom-Taxonomie nach Anderson und Krathwohl [4] – weiter konkretisiert,
    woraus dann im weiteren Schritt mögliche Lehrszenarien in AR gestaltet wurden.'

  text: "There have been numerous studies highlighting the potential of Augmented
    Reality (AR) in different educational settings and its impacts on learners in
    terms of increased motivation, learning, focus, and more. AR applications are
    suitable for use in formal as well as informal learning environments and educational
    institutions, starting with art courses in pre-schools or biology, history, chemistry,
    physics etc. in secondary schools and universities. Despite the increasing number
    of studies, only a few AR applications are based on a suitable didactic principle.
    In addition, there is a lack of general studies investigating the learning-promoting
    characteristics of AR in the field of preparation and conduction of laboratory
    trainings. Current studies merely extend printed learning content with additional
    links, videos, or static 3D models or require special prerequisites for using
    the AR application.\r\nTherefore, this article examines and focuses on a design
    concept for a mobile-based AR application (App) for acquiring and deepening practical
    skills in handling laboratory equipment and components. In a previous work, the
    possibilities and limitations of AR technology in engineering education, with
    a particular focus on laboratory work, were investigated in order to avoid frequent
    design mistakes. The didactic concept in this project is based on the constructive
    alignment according to Biggs with the definition of the three compulsory steps:
    learning objectives (or intended learning outcome), teaching / learning activities
    and assessments. The learning objectives were further concretized in the next
    step, based on the revised Bloom taxonomy according to Anderson and Krathwohl
    to derive and design possible teaching scenarios in AR. "

  text: Structural parts for aviation have very high demands on the development and
    production process. Therefore, the entire process must be considered in order
    to produce high-quality AM metal parts. In this case study, a conventional part
    was selected to be optimized for AM. The process presented includes component
    selection, design improvement with a novel approach for topology optimization
    based on the AMendate algorithm as basis of MSC Apex Generative Design,component
    production on a SLM 250 HL and post-processing including heat treatment and surface
    smoothing. With the topology optimization a weight reduction of ~60 % could be
    realized, whereby the stress distribution is more homogeneous. Furthermore, the
    challenges of support optimization and post-processing have to be addressed, in
    order to produce competitive parts.

  text: Herein we present a new proton-conducting iron(II) metal–organic framework
    (MOF) of an unusual structure formed by chains of alternating bistriazolate-p-benzoquinone
    anions and iron(II) cations with four axially coordinated water molecules. These
    chains assemble via π–π stacking between the aromatic units to form a three-dimensional
    grid-like network with channel pores filled with water molecules. The material
    was structurally characterized by single-crystal XRD analysis, and its water and
    thermal stability was investigated. The proton conductivity was studied by impedance
    measurements on needle-like single crystals. A simple but efficient measurement
    setup consisting of interdigital electrodes was used. The influence of the crystal
    orientation, temperature, and humidity was investigated. The iron(II)-MOF showed
    the highest proton conductivity of 3.3·10–3 S cm–1 at 22 °C and 94% relative humidity.
    Contrary to most known structures, the conductivity in this material is controlled
    by chemical properties of the pore system rather than by grain boundaries. The
    presented material is the starting point for further tailoring the proton-conducting
    properties, independent of morphological features which could find potential applications
    as membrane materials in proton-exchange membrane fuel cells.

  text: According to ISO / ASTM 52900, additive manufacturing (AM) is defined as "the
    process of joining materials to make parts from 3D model data, usually layer upon
    layer, as opposed to conventional manufacturing including subtractive manufacturing
    technologies and formative manufacturing methodologies” [1]. This results in significant
    advantages over conventional manufacturing methodologies, such as the production
    of topologically optimized, complex structures, lower material consumption or
    shorter product development cycles. In order to be able to use these advantages,
    the possibilities and restrictions of the processes must be known. In particular,
    selective laser beam melting (SLM), in which a powdery metallic starting material
    is melted by means of a laser, requires a sound understanding of the process.
    For this purpose, design guidelines have been presented in various scientific
    papers. These design guidelines help to design a component in such a way that
    it can be manufactured successfully using additive manufacturing. These so-called
    “AMsuitable design guidelines” can be found among others at Adam, Kranz and Thomas
    [2,3,4,5]. In contrast to established manufacturing processes, the post-processing
    of additive components is divided into two steps. First, the AM immanent post
    processing, such as the removing of the component from the building platform or
    the removing of the remaining powder. These post-processing steps are in the following
    referred to “post-processing”. Secondly, the subsequent post-processing steps
    to improve the component properties, such as milling and turning or a stress-relief
    annealing. These are referred to as “finishing” and form the focus of this paper.
    With regard to a successful finishing of additively manufactured components, design
    guidelines must be taken into account that consider the finishing inherent restrictions
    and possibilities. In the following, these design guidelines are referred to “finishing
    suitable”. They can deviate significantly from those of conventionally manufactured
    components in the case of additively manufactured components. Although there are
    some investigations that deal with the post-processing of additively manufactured
    components [6,7], there are hardly any design guidelines that are suitable for
    finishing [8]. Therefore, knowledge about the finishing of additively manufactured
    components is based on experimental experience rather than on scientific knowledge.
    For this reason, design guidelines for a finishing suitable design must be methodically
    determined and quantified. These quantified design guidelines can be used for
    an automated design check on complex components like topology optimized geometries.
