text:
One of the strategies employed to lower weight and to decrease material
consumption is reducing part thickness itself. Thus, functionally graded materials
in which structural reinforcement is adjusted locally, are of great interest.
With regard to conventional industrial processes, such as extrusion or flexible
cold rolling, thickness variations can only be achieved either longitudinally
or through the cross-section of the semi-finished products. Hence, a combined
thickness variation (along both axes) is difficult to generate solely by extrusion
or rolling. A simultaneous thickness variation in both directions, however, would
enable further weight savings in structural components such as car body parts.
In this study, a promising approach with extruded shapes, serving as a billet
for a flexible hot rolling process, is elaborated upon. By employing the described
process modification, shapes with simultaneous thickness variations in longitudinal
as well as in transverse direction are feasible. Initial numerical analysis reveals
the weight-saving potential of using these semi-finished products for structural
parts in a car body. A demonstration of the production process for the semi-finished
parts and the occurring challenges are discussed. To verify and adjust the new
technology, a numerical model of the flexible hot rolling process has been created
based on the finite element software QForm VX. This model is also employed for
tool design optimization to produce semi-finished components with the required
geometrical quality. Finally, the results of hot rolling experiments conducted
using the adjusted roll design are presented.

text: In latest body-in-white (BIW) concepts, engineers take into account a wider
range of different materials to pursue a multi-material design approach. However,
the lightweight potential of common materials like steel, aluminum or even fiber-reinforcement
plastics (FRP) is limited. In keeping with the motto “the best material for the
best application”, a new approach for a top-down material design is introduced.
With the aim to develop an application tailored material, the multi-material concept
is adapted for the thickness dimension of the component. Within this contribution
a new optimization- based design methodology is applied on a stiffness relevant
car body part. Starting with benchmark simulations of a reference BIW structure,
a critical car body component is determined by an internal energy based method
and a subsequent sensitivity analysis. The identified demonstrator component is
later subdivided into multiple layers and submitted to a first optimization loop
in which the developed methodology varies the material parameters for each single
layer. Once an optimum for the through-thickness properties of the part is found,
further optimization loops with concrete material pendants and manufacturing restrictions
are carried out. The result is a hybrid laminate part consisting of steel and
FRP plies. To achieve a further improvement in body characteristics and lightweight,
the investigated part is redesigned by the aim of topology optimization. Finally,
the tailored hybrid stacks are validated in BIW simulations and compared with
the reference. The optimization-based approach allows a weight reduction up to
25 % while maintaining or even improving the BIW properties.

text:
Abstract
In the field of global surface parametrization
a recent focus has been on so‐called seamless parametrization. This term refers
to parametrization approaches which, while using an atlas of charts to enable
the handling of surfaces of arbitrary topology, relate the parametrization across
the cuts between charts via transition functions from special classes of transformations.
This effectively makes the cuts invisible to applications which are invariant
to these specific transformations in some sense. In actual implementations of
these parametrization approaches, however, these restrictions are obeyed only
approximately; errors stem from the tolerances of numerical solvers employed and,
ultimately, from the limited accuracy of floating point arithmetic. In practice,
robustness issues arise from these flaws in the seamlessness of a parametrization,
no matter how small. We present a robust global algorithm that turns a given approximately
seamless parametrization into an exactly seamless one ‐ that still is representable
by standard floating point numbers. It supports common practically relevant additional
constraints regarding boundary and feature curve alignment or isocurve connectivity,
and ensures that these are likewise fulfilled exactly. This allows subsequent
algorithms to operate robustly on the resulting truly seamless parametrization.
We believe that the core of our method will furthermore be of benefit in a broader
range of applications involving linearly constrained numerical optimization.

text: "
\r\n The problem of discrete surface parametrization,
i.e. mapping a mesh to a planar domain, has been investigated extensively. We
address the more general problem of mapping\r\n between\r\n
\ surfaces. In particular, we provide a formulation that yields a map
between two disk-topology meshes, which is continuous and injective by construction
and which locally minimizes intrinsic distortion. A common approach is to express
such a map as the composition of two maps via a simple intermediate domain such
as the plane, and to independently optimize the individual maps. However, even
if both individual maps are of minimal distortion, there is potentially high distortion
in the composed map. In contrast to many previous works, we minimize distortion
in an end-to-end manner, directly optimizing the quality of the composed map.
This setting poses additional challenges due to the discrete nature of both the
source and the target domain. We propose a formulation that, despite the combinatorial
aspects of the problem, allows for a purely continuous optimization. Further,
our approach addresses the non-smooth nature of discrete distortion measures in
this context which hinders straightforward application of off-the-shelf optimization
techniques. We demonstrate that, despite the challenges inherent to the more involved
setting, discrete surface-to-surface maps can be optimized effectively.\r\n
"

text: "
Seamless global parametrization of surfaces is a key operation in
geometry processing, e.g., for high-quality quad mesh generation. A common approach
is to prescribe the parametric domain structure, in particular, the locations
of parametrization singularities (cones), and solve a non-convex optimization
problem minimizing a distortion measure, with local injectivity imposed through
either constraints or barrier terms. In both cases, an initial valid parametrization
is essential to serve as a feasible starting point for obtaining an optimized
solution. While convexified versions of the constraints eliminate this initialization
requirement, they narrow the range of solutions, causing some problem instances
that actually do have a solution to become infeasible.
\r\n
We
demonstrate that for arbitrary given sets of topologically admissible parametric
cones with prescribed curvature, a global seamless parametrization always exists
(with the exception of one well-known case). Importantly, our proof is constructive
and directly leads to a general algorithm for computing such parametrizations.
Most distinctively, this algorithm is bootstrapped with a convex optimization
problem (solving for a conformal map), in tandem with a simple linear equation
system (determining a seamless modification of this map). This initial map can
then serve as a valid starting point and be optimized for low distortion using
existing injectivity preserving methods.
"

text: 'There are two ways for taxpayers to avoid paying taxes: legal tax optimization
and illegal tax evasion. The government reacts by altering the law, and by conducting
audits, respectively. These phenomena are modeled as a strategic interaction between
all taxpayers: the more taxpayers optimize, the lower the optimization result
as a consequence of the government tightening the tax law. The more taxpayers
evade, the higher the risk of detection because of the tax agencies increasing
the audit probability. It emerges that, in equilibrium, the population shares
of optimizers and evaders are not interdependent; rather, they both increase to
the detriment of the share of non-optimizing taxpayers. If the government reacts
to changed optimization behavior with too large a delay, an equilibrium tax law
cannot be reached. Tax codes should be updated rapidly in order to avoid a permanent
change of the tax law, which is costly both for the legislator and the taxpayers
facing legal uncertainty.'

text: The terahertz frequency range provides abundant bandwidth (25GHz ~ 50 GHz)
to achieve ultra-high-speed wireless communication and enables data rates up to
and above 100 Gbps. We choose Parallel Sequence Spread Spectrum (PSSS) as an analog
friendly modulation and coding scheme that allows for an efficient mixed-signal
implementation of a 100 Gbps wireless communication system. In our system design,
we require a DAC (Digital to Analog converters) running at 1.67 G symbols/sec.
The optimization of the bit resolution of this DAC will considerably reduce the
hardware implementation efforts. In this work, we presented the analytical model
for PSSS modulation and deduced a mathematical formula to calculate the number
of discrete level amplitudes along with their probability distribution appearing
at the output of the PSSS modulated signal. The analytical analysis assists in
predicting the number of the quantization level of the DAC needed at the PSSS
transmitter. The theoretical analysis shows that there are in total 225 discrete
levels at the output of the PSSS encoder which leads to an 8-bit resolution of
DAC. In this paper, we analyzed the variation of BER (Bit Error Rate) to the clipping
of low probability amplitude levels and found that there is an only slight increase
of the BER when we clip off the low probability amplitude levels. Thus, there
is a tradeoff involved in a minor growth of BER concerning the reduction of the
DAC bit resolution. Finally, we can reduce the DAC bit resolution from 8 bits
to 7 bits and thus simplify the hardware implementation efforts of DAC operating
at 1.67 Gbps.

text: "
As a result of the increasing labor force participation of mothers,
this article questions how twoparent households divide the housework activities
of caring, cooking and cleaning. Therefore three types of couples with different
labor force participations were formed: Dual-earner couples, couples with additional
female income and malebreadwinner couples. The time use for the mentioned activities
was examined with a secondary analysis based on the German representative time
use surveys of 2012/2013 and 2001/2002. The analysis showed that fulltime mothers
spent the lowest amount of time for caring, cooking and cleaning. However, unemployed
mothers spent the most time for these activities. Within a decade – from 2001/2002
to 2012/2013 – all mothers have reduced their time spent on household activities.
Meanwhile, all parents in 2012/2013 take noticeably more time for child care.
Regardless of the mother’s labor force participation, mothers still spent more
time for caring, cooking and cleaning, especially on weekdays. Additionally, the
everyday housework is divided by gender. Only on weekends, couples with employed
mothers shared the care-work almost egalitarian.\r\nZusammenfassung\r\nVor
"
