Over the last few years, a large number of instructional videos has been uploaded to websites such as YouTube. Due to the widespread distribution of high-speed internet connections and (mobile) devices, such as smartphones or laptops, which are nowadays routinely used by students, online videos are also frequently used in higher education. While much research on this subject focuses on Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) or flipped classroom approaches, this survey examines use of videos for self-study, complementary to traditional face-to-face courses. Furthermore, we analyze the acceptance of a characteristic video production style, which uses specific 3D animations to clarify complex connections between technical and mathematical aspects. The results indicate extensive use of short videos which address subjects that are particularly difficult for the students. This survey can help educators to develop an impression of current video use by undergraduate engineering students.   abstract     = {{<jats:p>The article examines the division of labor for everyday food routines of two-parent households depending on their labor force participation. Using data from the representative German Time Use Survey 2001/02 and 2012/13, three different pairs were formed: dual-earner couples, couples with additional female income and male-breadwinner couples Findings show that mother’s employment influences the time used for everyday food routines: It was found that the higher the employment rate of mothers, the less time was spent on food routine activities. Furthermore, the daily time used for everyday food routines was reduced from 2001/02 to 2012/13. The largest reductions were seen in the group of mothers working fulltime. Besides that, fathers were more engaged in meal preparation on the weekends, although the responsibility was the mother’s. In addition, the age and number of children in a household influenced the time used for everyday food routines. However, none of the examined pair constellations can help determine an egalitarian division of everyday food routines. There is still a labor division by gender.&#x0D;
Zusammenfassung &#x0D;
Der Beitrag untersucht die zeitliche Gestaltung sowie die innerfamiliale Arbeitsteilung des Essalltags von Müttern und Vätern in Paarbeziehungen differenziert nach deren Erwerbsumfang. Die Sekundäranalyse erfolgt auf Basis der repräsentativen Zeitverwendungsdaten 2012/13 und 2001/02, wobei drei Paarkonstellationen untersucht werden: Doppelverdiener-Paare, weibliche Zuverdiener- Paare sowie Paare mit männlichem Familienernährer. Die Analyse des Essalltags zeigt, dass der Erwerbsstatus der Mutter die zeitliche Gestaltung des Essalltags beeinflusst. Je höher dieser ist, desto weniger Zeit wird für die Ernährungsversorgung aufgewendet. Darüber hinaus hat sich die tägliche Zeitverwendung für die Ernährungsversorgung von 2001/02 bis 2012/13 reduziert, wobei die stärksten Einsparungen bei vollzeiterwerbstätigen Müttern zu konstatieren sind. Väter engagieren sich verstärkt am Wochenende bei der Mahlzeitenzubereitung, gleichwohl liegt die Verantwortung insgesamt bei den Müttern. Ebenso beeinflussen Alter und Anzahl der Kinder die Zeitverwendung für die Ernährungsversorgung. Letztlich kann in keiner untersuchten Paarkonstellation eine egalitäre Arbeitsteilung zur Gestaltung des Essalltags festgestellt werden. Vielmehr dominieren relativ ausgeprägte geschlechtsspezifische Arrangements.</jats:p>}},

  abstract     = {{The 3D implementation of a hybrid analytical/numerical variant of the coupled-mode theory is discussed.
Eigenmodes of the constituting dielectric channels are computed numerically. The frequency-domain
coupled-mode models then combine these into fully vectorial approximations for the optical electromagnetic
fields of the composite structure. Following a discretization of amplitude functions by 1D finite elements, pro-
cedures from the realm of finite-element numerics are applied to establish systems of linear equations for the then-
discrete modal amplitudes. Examples substantiate the functioning of the technique and allow for some numerical
assessment. The full 3D simulations are highly efficient in memory consumption, moderately demanding in com-
putational time, and, in regimes of low radiative losses, sufficiently accurate for practical design. Our results
include the perturbation of guided modes by changes of the refractive indices, the interaction of waves in parallel,
horizontally or vertically coupled straight waveguides, and a series of crossings of potentially overlapping channels
with fairly arbitrary relative positions and orientations.}},

  abstract     = {{To detect errors or find potential for improvement during the CAD-supported development of a complex technical system like modern industrial machines, the system's virtual prototype can be examined in virtual reality (VR) in the context of virtual design reviews. Besides exploring the static shape of the examined system, observing the machines' mechanics (e.g., motor-driven mechanisms) and transport routes for the material transport (e.g., via conveyor belts or chains, or rail-based transport systems) can play an equally important role in such a review. In practice it is often the case, that the relevant information about transport routes, or kinematic properties is either not consequently modeled in the CAD data or is lost during conversion processes. To significantly reduce the manual effort and costs for creating animations of the machines complex behavior with such limited input data for a design review, we present a set of algorithms to automatically determine geometrical properties of machine parts based only on their triangulated surfaces. The algorithms allow to detect the course of transport systems, the orientation of objects in 3d space, rotation axes of cylindrical objects and holes, the number of tooth of gears, as well as the tooth spacing of toothed racks. We implemented the algorithms in the VR system PADrend and applied them to animate virtual prototypes of real machines.}},
