Twenty-four female footballers (14.9 ± 0.9 year) performed unanticipated cutting maneuvers in a laboratory setting and on the football pitch during football-specific exercises (F-EX) and games (F-GAME). Knee joint moments were collected in the laboratory and grouped using hierarchical agglomerative clustering. The clusters were used to investigate the kinematics collected on field through wearable sensors. Three clusters emerged: Cluster 1 presented the lowest knee moments; Cluster 2 presented high knee extension but low knee abduction and rotation moments; Cluster 3 presented the highest knee abduction, extension, and external rotation moments. In F-EX, greater knee abduction angles were found in Cluster 2 and 3 compared to Cluster 1 (p = 0.007). Cluster 2 showed the lowest knee and hip flexion angles (p &lt; 0.013). Cluster 3 showed the greatest hip external rotation angles (p = 0.006). In F-GAME, Cluster 3 presented the greatest knee external rotation and lowest knee flexion angles (p = 0.003). Clinically relevant differences towards ACL injury identified in the laboratory reflected at-risk patterns only in part when cutting on the field: in the field, low-risk players exhibited similar kinematic patterns as the high-risk players. In this work, multiprotein adsorption from diluted human serum at gold and oxidized iron surfaces is investigated at different serum concentrations and pH values. Adsorption-induced changes in surface topography and the total amount of adsorbed proteins are quantified by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and polarization-modulation infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS), respectively. For both surfaces, stronger protein adsorption is observed at pH 6 compared to pH 7 and pH 8. PM-IRRAS furthermore provides some qualitative insights into the pH-dependent alterations in the composition of the adsorbed multiprotein films. Changes in the amide II/amide I band area ratio and in particular side-chain IR absorption suggest that the increased adsorption at pH 6 is accompanied by a change in protein film composition. Presumably, this is mostly driven by the adsorption of human serum albumin, which at pH 6 adsorbs more readily and thereby replaces other proteins with lower surface affinities in the resulting multiprotein film.
"}],"publication":"Molecules","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"keyword":["Chemistry (miscellaneous)","Analytical Chemistry","Organic Chemistry","Physical and Theoretical Chemistry","Molecular Medicine","Drug Discovery","Pharmaceutical Science"]},{"keyword":["Electrical and Electronic Engineering","Biochemistry","Instrumentation","Atomic and Molecular Physics","and Optics","Analytical Chemistry"],"article_number":"4190","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"_id":"45859","department":[{"_id":"35"},{"_id":"176"}],"user_id":"9583","abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"
Sport-related concussions (SRC) are characterized by impaired autonomic control. Heart rate variability (HRV) offers easily obtainable diagnostic approaches to SRC-associated dysautonomia, but studies investigating HRV during sleep, a crucial time for post-traumatic cerebral regeneration, are relatively sparse. The aim of this study was to assess nocturnal HRV in athletes during their return to sports (RTS) after SRC in their home environment using wireless wrist sensors (E4, Empatica, Milan, Italy) and to explore possible relations with clinical concussion-associated sleep symptoms. Eighteen SRC athletes wore a wrist sensor obtaining photoplethysmographic data at night during RTS as well as one night after full clinical recovery post RTS (&gt;3 weeks). Nocturnal heart rate and parasympathetic activity of HRV (RMSSD) were calculated and compared using the Mann–Whitney U Test to values of eighteen; matched by sex, age, sport, and expertise, control athletes underwent the identical protocol. During RTS, nocturnal RMSSD of SRC athletes (Mdn = 77.74 ms) showed a trend compared to controls (Mdn = 95.68 ms, p = 0.021, r = −0.382, p adjusted using false discovery rate = 0.126) and positively correlated to “drowsiness” (r = 0.523, p = 0.023, p adjusted = 0.046). Post RTS, no differences in RMSSD between groups were detected. The presented findings in nocturnal cardiac parasympathetic activity during nights of RTS in SRC athletes might be a result of concussion, although its relation to recovery still needs to be elucidated. Utilization of wireless sensors and wearable technologies in home-based settings offer a possibility to obtain helpful objective data in the management of SRC.
"}],"status":"public","publication":"Sensors","type":"journal_article","title":"Home-Based Measurements of Nocturnal Cardiac Parasympathetic Activity in Athletes during Return to Sport after Sport-Related Concussion","doi":"10.3390/s23094190","publisher":"MDPI AG","date_updated":"2025-08-28T13:41:09Z","volume":23,"date_created":"2023-07-04T11:30:24Z","author":[{"first_name":"Anne Carina","full_name":"Delling, Anne Carina","last_name":"Delling"},{"orcid":"0000-0002-9385-0834","last_name":"Jakobsmeyer","id":"9583","full_name":"Jakobsmeyer, Rasmus","first_name":"Rasmus"},{"full_name":"Coenen, Jessica","last_name":"Coenen","first_name":"Jessica"},{"first_name":"Nele","full_name":"Christiansen, Nele","last_name":"Christiansen"},{"first_name":"Claus","last_name":"Reinsberger","id":"48978","full_name":"Reinsberger, Claus"}],"year":"2023","intvolume":" 23","citation":{"mla":"Delling, Anne Carina, et al. “Home-Based Measurements of Nocturnal Cardiac Parasympathetic Activity in Athletes during Return to Sport after Sport-Related Concussion.” <i>Sensors</i>, vol. 23, no. 9, 4190, MDPI AG, 2023, doi:<a href=\"https://doi.org/10.3390/s23094190\">10.3390/s23094190</a>.","short":"A.C. While the formal oxidation state is easily evaluated, the real physical oxidation state value is often difficult to determine and significantly varies from the formal values. Determination of the ionization threshold in X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XANES) relies on the absorption edge position and sometimes poses limitations, mainly due to the edge resonances. Moreover, the lower energy states can be probed only within x-soft or XUV photons providing only surface state information of probed materials. Here, we employ high energy resolution off-resonant spectroscopy to determine both 1s and 3p binding energies of Fe-based materials and therefore correlate to their physical oxidation state. The results are compared to the ones obtained with classical X-ray absorption, X-ray emission, and photoelectron spectroscopies. The observed differences in binding energies are discussed in a frame of initial and final state interactions with the atom's electronic configurations. The presented methodology is discussed towards potential use to single-shot experiments and application at X-ray free-electron lasers. Alternatively, core level X-ray emission spectroscopy can be used, but the emission line positions are strongly affected by spin-orbit interaction. However, due to the energy transfer from the photon to the excited core electron, the same information as in XANES is probed in high energy resolution off-resonant spectroscopy (HEROS). Based on the Kramers–Heisenberg theory, we propose a new approach for ionization threshold determination which is free of the limitations encountered in XANES-based determination of the core state energy. Namely, the value of core state energy can be determined analytically using a few HEROS spectra recorded with significantly higher spectral resolution. This approach provides a basis for the universal physical oxidation state determination method."}],"date_created":"2023-01-30T16:24:06Z","publisher":"Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC)","title":"High resolution off resonant spectroscopy as a probe of the oxidation state","issue":"11","year":"2022","department":[{"_id":"35"},{"_id":"306"}],"user_id":"48467","_id":"40986","type":"journal_article","status":"public","volume":37,"author":[{"orcid":"0000-0002-3734-7011","last_name":"Nowakowski","id":"78878","full_name":"Nowakowski, Michał","first_name":"Michał"},{"last_name":"Kalinko","full_name":"Kalinko, Aleksandr","first_name":"Aleksandr"},{"last_name":"Szlachetko","full_name":"Szlachetko, Jakub","first_name":"Jakub"},{"first_name":"Rafał","last_name":"Fanselow","full_name":"Fanselow, Rafał"},{"first_name":"Matthias","id":"47241","full_name":"Bauer, Matthias","orcid":"0000-0002-9294-6076","last_name":"Bauer"}],"date_updated":"2024-05-07T11:43:54Z","doi":"10.1039/d2ja00232a","publication_identifier":{"issn":["0267-9477","1364-5544"]},"publication_status":"published","intvolume":" 37","page":"2383-2391","citation":{"ieee":"M. Although these materials have been widely studied for a variety of applications, the mechanisms underlying the pyrolysis are yet poorly understood. This study provides a comprehensive temperature-resolved characterization of the chemical composition, morphology and crystallinity of sucrose-derived hydrochar during pyrolysis. Thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and elemental analysis have shown that the dry hydrochar loses about 41% of its dry mass due to the exothermic disintegration of oxygen-containing groups until the carbonization is completed at about 850 °C with a total carbon yield of 93%. The carbonization and aromatization of the initially furanic and keto-aliphatic structure were analyzed by 13C solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The transition from an amorphous to a nanocrystalline graphitic structure was analyzed using X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The pore formation mechanism was examined by helium ion microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and nitrogen adsorption measurements. The results indicate the formation of oxygen-rich nanoclusters up to 700 °C, which decompose up to 750 °C leaving behind equally sized pores, resulting in a surface area of up to 480 m2/g.","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Journal of Analytical and Applied Pyrolysis","title":"Pyrolysis of sucrose-derived hydrochar","date_created":"2022-01-18T06:25:06Z","publisher":"Elsevier BV","year":"2022","quality_controlled":"1"},{"intvolume":" 20","citation":{"apa":"Hoffmann, M. An increasing bidirectional energy flow stresses the assets of the distribution grid, especially medium voltage switchgear. This calls for improved maintenance strategies to prevent critical failures. Predictive maintenance, a maintenance strategy relying on current condition data of assets, serves as a guideline. Novel sensors covering thermal, mechanical, and partial discharge aspects of switchgear, enable continuous condition monitoring of some of the most critical assets of the distribution grid. Combined with machine learning algorithms, the demands put on the distribution grid by the energy and mobility revolutions can be handled. In this paper, we review the current state-of-the-art of all aspects of condition monitoring for medium voltage switchgear. Furthermore, we present an approach to develop a predictive maintenance system based on novel sensors and machine learning.
