[{"abstract":[{"text":"n 1789, Eberhard repudiated Kant’s claim expressed in the first edition of his Critique of Pure Reason to have delivered a new, namely transcendental turn in philosophy, as he was able to retrace our cognition to the origin of phenomena instead of delivering a “merely logical deduction”. Eberhard holds that there was nothing new, but all delivered in Leibniz and Wolff; to prove his claim he refers to a quote from Du Châtelet, taken from a paragraph where she determines the right understanding as to be able “to penetrate to the origin of phenomena”. This paper brings Du Châtelet into discourse with Kant via this Eberhard quote. In its first part, it investigates the use of her quote in the Kant-Eberhard controversy. The second part serves to ground the quote in Du Châtelet’s epistemology. It lays out how to understand Du Châtelet’s claim to penetrate to the origin of phenomena. Du Châtelet’s claim to have renewed philosophy must be taken seriously, and it is helpful for rethinking the German philosophical development from the rationalists to Kant through including Du Châtelet’s theory of cognition.","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Époque Émilienne Philosophy and Science in the Age of Émilie Du Châtelet (1706-1749)","keyword":["Émilie Du Châtelet","History of Science","Newton","Kant","Eberhard","Wolff","Leibniz"],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"year":"2022","quality_controlled":"1","title":"Du Châtelet and Kant: Claiming the Renewal of Philosophy","publisher":"Springer International Publishing","date_created":"2022-12-21T11:35:14Z","editor":[{"full_name":"Hagengruber, Ruth Edith","last_name":"Hagengruber","first_name":"Ruth Edith"}],"status":"public","type":"book_chapter","_id":"34705","department":[{"_id":"615"},{"_id":"14"},{"_id":"519"}],"user_id":"91827","series_title":"Women in the History of Philosophy and Science ","place":"Cham","intvolume":" 10","page":"57-84","citation":{"ama":"Hagengruber RE. The philosophers discussed here include both figures who have recently come to be better known (Elisabeth of Bohemia, Anne Conway, Mary Astell, Catharine Trotter Cockburn, Emilie du Châtelet), and less familiar figures (Moderata Fonte, Lucrezia Marinella Arcangela Tarabotti, Tullia d’Aragona, Madame Deshoulières, Madame de Sablé, Angélique de Saint-Jean Arnauld d’Andilly, Olivia Sabuco, Susanna Newcome).\r\n\r\nThe chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the British Journal for the History of Philosophy."}],"department":[{"_id":"519"}],"user_id":"49063","_id":"21276","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"keyword":["History of Women Philosophers","Methodology","History of Philosophy","Women's Studies","Gender History"],"edition":"1","publication_identifier":{"isbn":["ISBN 9780367758646"]},"quality_controlled":"1","citation":{"ama":"Hagengruber R, Hutton S, eds. <i>Women Philosophers from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment</i>. 1st ed. The objects of mathematics are ideal or fictional entities; nevertheless, mathematics is presented as indispensable for an account of the physical world. After outlining Du Châtelet’s position, and showing how she departs from Christian Wolff’s pessimism about Newtonian mathematical physics, I show that the tension in her position is only apparent. Du Châtelet has a worked-out defense of the explanatory and epistemic need for mathematical objects, consistent with their metaphysical nonfundamentality. I conclude by sketching how Du Châtelet’s conception of mathematical indispensability differs interestingly from many contemporary approaches.
"}],"publication":"Philosophy of Science"},{"type":"book","abstract":[{"text":"How are activation programs for the young unemployed implemented? A. The long tradition of ethical considerations concerning investment behavior has often been mentioned by historians but rarely investigated. This paper presents a case study of the 19th century philhellene banker Jean-Gabriel Eynard,\r\nwho was philanthropically active in Greece, but also invested part of his capital on the emerging Greek market. Drawing on the methodological approach of the “sociology of morality”, this article examines how Eynard invested in Greece, which norms and values concerning investment behavior he articulated and how far they were comparable with the norms and values of today’s Socially Responsible Investment. What emerges is that the practices and the norms of Socially\r\nResponsible and Ethical Investment then and now are remarkably similar, while the “moral background” (G. Abend) has changed considerably in some, but not all points.","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Vierteljahrschrift für Sozial- und Wirtschaftsgeschichte","doi":"10.25162/vswg-2019-0007","author":[{"first_name":"Korinna","orcid":"0000-0002-7967-3261","last_name":"Schönhärl","full_name":"Schönhärl, Korinna","id":"89037"}],"volume":106,"date_updated":"2022-01-11T10:11:47Z","citation":{"ama":"Schönhärl K. However, the attribution of importance and reputation to women’s intellectual achievements in this period is a case of its own. This paper investigates the methodical attempt of 18th century historiography, presenting the example of Jakob Brucker and his Pinacoteca to relocate intellectual women in his history of philosophy and science. The relative integration of women into the 18th century intellectual sphere is the starting point of this methodical investigation to retrace its ‘why and how’.\r\nKeywords : Emilie Du Châtelet, Luise Gottsched, Laura Bassi, History, Philoso-phy, Science.","lang":"eng"}],"status":"public","type":"journal_article","publication":"Bruniana & Campanelliana"},{"citation":{"ama":"Hagengruber RE, ed. <i>Women Phenomenologists on Social Ontology. How Arendt Solves a Wittgensteinian Problem (Anna-Magdalena Schaupp) This edited volume examines women's voices in phenomenology, many of which had a formative impact on the movement but have be kept relatively silent for many years. It features papers that truly extend the canonical scope of phenomenological research. Readers will discover the rich philosophical output of such scholars as Edith Stein, Hedwig Conrad-Martius, and Gerda Walther. They will also come to see how the phenomenological movement allowed its female proponents to achieve a position in the academic world few women could enjoy at the time. The book explores the intersection of social ontology, phenomenology, and women scholars in phenomenology. The papers offer a fresh look at such topics as the nature of communities, shared values, feelings, and other mental content. In addition, coverage examines the contributions of Jewish women to the science, who were present at the beginning of the phenomenological movement. This remarkable anthology also features a paper on Gerda Walther written by Linda Lopez McAlister, former editor of the feminist journal Hypatia, who had met Walther in 1976. This book features work from the conference ``Women Phenomenologists on Social Ontology,'' held at the University of Paderborn. Part of the&lt;br /&gt;problem was the lack of diversity of Greek agricultural production, which was focused on raisins and currants (especially flavourful raisins, grown exclusively in the area around Corinth) for export. The collapse of market prices for this good seriously affected the Greek treasury and society in the growing regions. The Greek government responded by trying to withhold part of the harvest in fertile years to stabilise world market prices. Plans to organise a monopoly company for the currant trade necessitated high sums of capital from abroad. This article investigates the question of how foreign bankers in London (Hambro &amp;amp; Son, Emile Erlanger) and Paris (Banque de l’Union Parisienne) could be convinced to participate in the project. Which factors allowed foreign bankers to trust in the Greek national economy despite its poor reputation? What factors influenced their risk management?
