text: n 1789, Eberhard repudiated Kant’s claim expressed in the first edition of
his Critique of Pure Reason to have delivered a new, namely transcendental turn
in philosophy, as he was able to retrace our cognition to the origin of phenomena
instead of delivering a “merely logical deduction”. Eberhard holds that there
was nothing new, but all delivered in Leibniz and Wolff; to prove his claim he
refers to a quote from Du Châtelet, taken from a paragraph where she determines
the right understanding as to be able “to penetrate to the origin of phenomena”.
This paper brings Du Châtelet into discourse with Kant via this Eberhard quote.
In its first part, it investigates the use of her quote in the Kant-Eberhard controversy.
The second part serves to ground the quote in Du Châtelet’s epistemology. It lays
out how to understand Du Châtelet’s claim to penetrate to the origin of phenomena.
Du Châtelet’s claim to have renewed philosophy must be taken seriously, and it
is helpful for rethinking the German philosophical development from the rationalists
to Kant through including Du Châtelet’s theory of cognition.

text: "This collection of essays presents new work on women’s contribution to philosophy
between the Renaissance and the mid-eighteenth century. They bring a new perspective
to the history of philosophy, by highlighting women’s contributions to philosophy
and testifying to the rich history of women’s thought in this period.\r\n\r\nBy
showing that women were active in many branches of philosophy (metaphysics, science,
political philosophy cosmology, ontology, epistemology) the book testifies to
the rich history of women’s thought across Europe in this period. The scope of
the collection is international, both in terms of the philosophers represented
and the contributors themselves from Britain and North America, but also from
continental Europe and from as far afield as Australia and Brazil. The philosophers
discussed here include both figures who have recently come to be better known
(Elisabeth of Bohemia, Anne Conway, Mary Astell, Catharine Trotter Cockburn, Emilie
du Châtelet), and less familiar figures (Moderata Fonte, Lucrezia Marinella Arcangela
Tarabotti, Tullia d’Aragona, Madame Deshoulières, Madame de Sablé, Angélique de
Saint-Jean Arnauld d’Andilly, Olivia Sabuco, Susanna Newcome).\r\n\r\nThe chapters
in this book were originally published as a special issue of the British Journal
for the History of Philosophy."

text: From the 1880s scientists developed methods to measure (dishonest) tax payment
behaviour. The first part of this article provides an overview of these methods
and their development. The second part enquires into the function of measuring
methods in the societal discourse about (honest) tax payments. The tax morale
research of Günter Schmölders, carried out in the 1950s and 1960s, is then examined
as a case study. The focus of interest is on the political advice that Schmölders
gave, as based on his empirical results, and on the ideal image of the citizen
and society which underlay the scientific method.

text: The following issue arose from a section at the Congress for Economic and
Social History in Regensburg in March 2019 and focuses on fiscal conflicts in
Europe from the early modern period until today. Distributive fiscal conflicts
are seen here as a probe into the past which can increase our understanding of
historical social structures. Fiscal history is analysed as a central arena of
the modern state. The introduction provides an overview of current research into
fiscal history in Germany and of the contributions presented in this focus issue.

text: How did bankers make their investment decisions, for example to issue a state
loan for a peripheral country? This in-depth case study investigates the question
of the Greek loan of 1833, issued by Rothschilds. The main interest is to reconstruct
James de Rothschild’s risk perception and decision making process, expressed in
the argumentation vis-à-vis his family. The significance of the guarantee of the
protecting powers, which was without precedent, is considered by James as well
as the competitive situation on the bond market, the relationship of the Rothschilds
with leading politicians of the time, and the special significance of Greece in
the period of intensive European philhellenism. The paper argues that in-depth
studies of bankers’ risk perception are necessary to illuminate the complexity
of their decision-making.

text:
There is a tension in Emilie Du Châtelet’s thought on mathematics.
The objects of mathematics are ideal or fictional entities; nevertheless, mathematics
is presented as indispensable for an account of the physical world. After outlining
Du Châtelet’s position, and showing how she departs from Christian Wolff’s pessimism
about Newtonian mathematical physics, I show that the tension in her position
is only apparent. Du Châtelet has a worked-out defense of the explanatory and
epistemic need for mathematical objects, consistent with their metaphysical nonfundamentality.
I conclude by sketching how Du Châtelet’s conception of mathematical indispensability
differs interestingly from many contemporary approaches.

text: How are activation programs for the young unemployed implemented? How do street-level
bureaucrats deal with competing rationalities and demands for action? Transition
policies increasingly aim at promoting self-regulation and constructing employable
subjects. Stephan Dahmen explores the practical regulation of biographical transitions
in activation programs for the young unemployed by focusing on the interactive
accomplishment of activation work. The study reveals how the critical tensions
of activation policies are continually re-interpreted and adapted to local contingencies
and describes the various organisational technologies used for creating employable
subjects.

seiner Philosophiegeschichte schrieb. '

text: "Altruistically motivated investment has become the subject of economic, psychological
and sociological research in recent years. The long tradition of ethical considerations
concerning investment behavior has often been mentioned by historians but rarely
investigated. This paper presents a case study of the 19th century philhellene
banker Jean-Gabriel Eynard,\r\nwho was philanthropically active in Greece, but
also invested part of his capital on the emerging Greek market. Drawing on the
methodological approach of the “sociology of morality”, this article examines
how Eynard invested in Greece, which norms and values concerning investment behavior
he articulated and how far they were comparable with the norms and values of today’s
Socially Responsible Investment. What emerges is that the practices and the norms
of Socially\r\nResponsible and Ethical Investment then and now are remarkably
similar, while the “moral background” (G. Abend) has changed considerably in some,
but not all points."

text: "Abstract · Émilie Du Châtelet (1706-1749), Laura Bassi (1711-1778), and Luise
Gottsched (1713-1762) were three philosophers and scientists of outstanding im-portance
in their epoch. However, the attribution of importance and reputation to women’s
intellectual achievements in this period is a case of its own. This paper investigates
the methodical attempt of 18th century historiography, presenting the example
of Jakob Brucker and his Pinacoteca to relocate intellectual women in his history
of philosophy and science. The relative integration of women into the 18th century
intellectual sphere is the starting point of this methodical investigation to
retrace its ‘why and how’.\r\nKeywords : Emilie Du Châtelet, Luise Gottsched,

Arendt Solves a Wittgensteinian Problem (Anna-Magdalena Schaupp) This edited volume
examines women''s voices in phenomenology, many of which had a formative impact
on the movement but have be kept relatively silent for many years. It features
papers that truly extend the canonical scope of phenomenological research. Readers
will discover the rich philosophical output of such scholars as Edith Stein, Hedwig
Conrad-Martius, and Gerda Walther. They will also come to see how the phenomenological
movement allowed its female proponents to achieve a position in the academic world
few women could enjoy at the time. The book explores the intersection of social
ontology, phenomenology, and women scholars in phenomenology. The papers offer
a fresh look at such topics as the nature of communities, shared values, feelings,
and other mental content. In addition, coverage examines the contributions of
Jewish women to the science, who were present at the beginning of the phenomenological
movement. This remarkable anthology also features a paper on Gerda Walther written
by Linda Lopez McAlister, former editor of the feminist journal Hypatia, who had
met Walther in 1976. This book features work from the conference ``Women Phenomenologists
on Social Ontology,'''' held at the University of Paderborn. Overall, it collects
profiles and analysis that unveil a hidden history of phenomenology'

text: '
The United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea was an arena
in which global resource equity was negotiated in a process that extended beyond
the governmental actors who took centre stage. But our perceptions of the role
of an increasingly civil society in framing national decision-making processes
during the 1970s – for instance, through trade associations or nongovernmental
organizations – is blurred. Both civil society and economic actors crafted similar
policies, though for different purposes: some – with regard to the north–south
divide – focused on the conservation of the ocean’s resources over the long term,
whereas others were more concerned with short-term economic benefits. This article
asks which arguments legitimized property and usage rights, and which resource
narratives were used. By taking into account the charged relationship of local–national–global
reaches, it also examines perceptions and management of resources in the context
of resource equity on a global scale.
'

text: The global economic crisis in the 1890s affected the economy of Greece severely,
and in 1893 the Greek State had to stop servicing its foreign debt. Part of the<br
/>problem was the lack of diversity of Greek agricultural production, which
was focused on raisins and currants (especially flavourful raisins, grown exclusively
in the area around Corinth) for export. The collapse of market prices for this
good seriously affected the Greek treasury and society in the growing regions.
The Greek government responded by trying to withhold part of the harvest in fertile
years to stabilise world market prices. Plans to organise a monopoly company for
the currant trade necessitated high sums of capital from abroad. This article
investigates the question of how foreign bankers in London (Hambro &amp; Son,
Emile Erlanger) and Paris (Banque de l’Union Parisienne) could be convinced to
participate in the project. Which factors allowed foreign bankers to trust in the
Greek national economy despite its poor reputation? What factors influenced their risk
management? The focus is on the role of Greek brokers in persuading the foreigners to
invest in Greece, especially the role played by Ioannis Pesmazoglou, the director
of the young and innovative Bank of Athens.
