This study addresses the formation of “viscous fingering” instabilities in structural adhesive joints, which are induced by thermally driven relative displacements during the liquid phase of the adhesive. Using a component-like specimen “bridge specimen,” the dependency of this phenomenon on process temperature and structural stiffness (rivet distance) was characterized. Experimental results reveal that while the relative displacement scales cubically with the free buckling length, the resulting adhesive area reduction follows an exponential trend, leading to a loss of effective bond area of up to 79%, which significantly compromises the joint strength in automotive applications. To predict these process-induced defects, a thermo-chemo-viscoelastic-viscoplastic adhesive model implemented in LS-DYNA was applied. The model combines curing kinetics, viscoelastic relaxation, and pressure-dependent plasticity and features a geometric damage parameter (D) that captures the adhesive area reduction caused by viscous fingering as an exponential function of the accumulated normal strain in the liquid phase. This damage parameter, calibrated on base-specimen level, was transferred to the component geometry. The simulation demonstrated high predictive accuracy with a maximum deviation of the adhesive area reduction of 3.1% compared to experimental data. This validates the model’s capability to predict manufacturing-induced damage in complex hybrid structures solely based on thermal boundary conditions.","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"The Journal of Adhesion","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"keyword":["Adhesive area reduction","CED coating process","delta alpha problem","epoxy structural adhesive","influence of manufacture","multi-material design","numerical simulation (FEM)","relative displacements","viscous fingering (saffman-taylor-instability)."],"ddc":["620","670","660"],"year":"2026","title":"Experimental characterization and numerical analysis of the influence of the CED coating process on viscous fingering formation in hybrid-jointed mixed structures","date_created":"2026-03-14T18:43:41Z","publisher":"Informa UK Limited","status":"public","type":"journal_article","file_date_updated":"2026-03-14T18:50:31Z","article_type":"original","department":[{"_id":"9"}],"user_id":"65415","_id":"64916","page":"1-24","citation":{"apa":"Al Trjman, M., Beule, F., Teutenberg, D., Meschut, G., & Riese, J. Systems theory offers powerful concepts to address challenges of growing system complexity and non-systemic design approaches in information systems. Despite its systemic origins, systems theory remains a peripheral topic in IS. The study addresses this gap by introducing a comprehensive framework of 52 systems-theoretical concepts to guide the design of complex IS artifacts. We synthesize scattered systems knowledge from diverse disciplines to provide a unified level of abstraction for complex information system design. We apply the framework to a use case of business reputation systems to show how the systems lens informs the design of a novel, complex information system. We make three key contributions to the literature. First, the framework provides a common ground for interdisciplinary research in information system design. Second, it offers a unified level of abstraction grounded in systems theory that serves as a coherent basis for artifact design. Third, it demonstrates the potential of systems theory as a foundational justificatory knowledge base. Furthermore, we provide guidance on applying the framework across multiple modes of reasoning, alongside further application guidelines. The study thus serves as a bridge between the body of systems knowledge and contextual design in IS.","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Communication of the Association for Information Systems","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"keyword":["Information Systems Research","Systems Theory","System Complexity","System Design","Design Science"],"external_id":{"unknown":["https://aisel.aisnet.org/cais/vol58/iss1/37/"]},"year":"2026","quality_controlled":"1","title":"Bridging Systems Theory and Information Systems: A Framework for Designing Complex Information Systems","date_created":"2026-04-02T04:19:09Z","publisher":"AIS"},{"title":"A blockchain-based reputation system for consulting","date_created":"2026-04-02T04:06:47Z","author":[{"first_name":"Simon","id":"83557","full_name":"Hemmrich, Simon","last_name":"Hemmrich"},{"first_name":"Volker","full_name":"Nissen, Volker","last_name":"Nissen"}],"date_updated":"2026-04-02T04:32:01Z","citation":{"chicago":"Hemmrich, Simon, and Volker Nissen. “A Blockchain-Based Reputation System for Consulting.” In Advanced Studies in Consulting Research and Digitalization – A Scientific Update on the Digital Transformation of the Consulting Industry. Cli-ents who have not worked with a particular consultancy face considerable risk when they place an order while lacking reliable information about the service quality they can expect. There is a strong link between trust and reputation, as the positive reputation of a consultancy can act as a substitute for a new client’s missing individual experience with the provider, fostering trust in the service quali-ty. Thus, creating, maintaining, and demonstrating a good reputation is of signifi-cant importance for consultancies in a very competitive industry.\r\nTo facilitate trustworthy signals, we design and implement a novel reputation mechanism that carries a monetary weight stored on a blockchain network as an immutable, decentralized, and transparent ledger. Based on an implementation in the Ethereum network and subsequent evaluation, we conclude that the reputation mechanism can contribute to leveling information asymmetry and reducing risk while increasing reputation and trust. Dataspaces provide the infrastructure necessary to integrate heterogeneous data sources within an organization or ecosystem, enabling seamless data interaction and interoperability. In addition, data spaces strengthen data sovereignty through their decentralized nature, which enables organizations to effectively control and manage their data. However, challenges persist in managing the complexity and dynamic nature of dataspaces, requiring significant resources and technical expertise. The decentralized nature leads to a large and diverse number of stakeholders, who need to agree on the use and scope of a dataspace. Modeling is a common approach to cope with technical complexity and heterogeneous stakeholders. In this paper, we propose a version of SysML and a corresponding method that focus on the modelling of data spaces. These can include operating vehicles that differ regarding their characteristics and application profile from privately owned cars in motorized individual transport. Studies on life cycle assessment and life cycle engineering of vehicle lightweight structures are mainly limited to these privately owned cars and the impact category of climate change. In this paper, a method for life cycle assessment-based engineering of lightweight structures in vehicles for various mobility system applications, including on-demand mobility services, is developed. The method enables the holistic life cycle assessment of lightweight structures in different mobility system applications considering parameter changes at the upstream products, component, subsystem, vehicle and mobility system levels, as well as the integration of results into engineering activities. A case study is used to show that the vehicle and mobility system application of lightweight structures can significantly influence their environmental impacts and the selection of ecologically preferable product designs. The application in vehicles for on-demand mobility services can lead to an increase in absolute use stage energy demand and environmental impacts compared to applications in privately owned vehicles for motorized individual transport. However, normalized to the transport performance provided, the lifecycle environmental impacts of structural components in vehicles for on-demand mobility services can be lower than in vehicles for motorized individual transport. The paper contributes methodically and with quantitative results to improved decision making in life cycle engineering activities for lightweight structures in mobility system applications."}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"keyword":["Life cycle assessment","Life cycle engineering","Lightweight design","On-demand mobility","Shared mobility","Mobility services"],"quality_controlled":"1","year":"2025","date_created":"2025-08-06T06:53:27Z","publisher":"Elsevier BV","title":"Life cycle engineering of lightweight structures in vehicles for on-demand mobility services","type":"journal_article","status":"public","department":[{"_id":"9"},{"_id":"321"},{"_id":"149"}],"user_id":"44763","_id":"60885","project":[{"name":"NeMobil: NeMo.bil – System kooperierender Fahrzeuge für einen individualisierten Öffentlichen Verkehr","_id":"780","grant_number":"19S23003Q"},{"name":"Climate bOWL: Climate bOWL: Climate neutral Business in Ostwestfalen-Lippe","_id":"405","grant_number":"005-2111-0020 "}],"article_type":"original","article_number":"101058","publication_identifier":{"issn":["2666-7908"]},"publication_status":"published","intvolume":" 28","citation":{"chicago":"Ostermann, Moritz, Eric Dierkes, Thorsten Marten, and Thomas Tröster. “Life Cycle Engineering of Lightweight Structures in Vehicles for On-Demand Mobility Services.” Cleaner Engineering and Technology 28 (2025). https://doi.org/10.1016/j.clet.2025.101058.","ieee":"M. However, the role of V&V engineers is often not given sufficient attention. Based on a systematic literature analysis and practical observations, a four-step method for Test-oriented Resilient Requirements Engineering (ToRRE) is developed. The steps are planning V&V, executing V&V activities, documenting V&V activities and analyzing results of V&V activities. Applying ToRRE ensures continuous information flow and traceability. Engineers are enabled to analyze requirements using engineering artifacts connected through Model-Based Systems Engineering. Adopting methods for Model-Based Effect Chain analysis to evaluated test cases and test scenarios, conclusions on requirements engineering and change management are enabled. The method is evaluated in an EU research project."}],"keyword":["systems engineering (SE)","product modelling/models","design methods","verification & validation","test cases & test scenarios"],"ddc":["620"],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}]},{"title":"A rate-based model for reactive separation columns with sandwich packings","publisher":"Elsevier BV","date_created":"2025-12-08T07:40:18Z","year":"2025","quality_controlled":"1","keyword":["Sandwich packings Structured packings Rate-based approach Model validation Ultra-fast X-ray tomography"],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"Sandwich packings are assembled from two conventional structured packings with different geometrical surface areas stacked alternatingly within a separation column. When operated under partially flooded conditions, they provide significant mass transfer improvement compared to common structured packings. In this work, a rate-based model including novel mass transfer correlations is presented and validated using a comprehensive experimental database for the reactive absorption of CO2 into aqueous monoethanolamine. The proposed rate-based approach is capable of accounting for axial dispersion, thereby enabling the evaluation of the effect of liquid-phase backmixing on the mass transfer performance. The validated rate-based model is used to evaluate the separation performance of sandwich packings. Compared with structured packings, up to 10 % higher mass transfer rates are obtained."}],"publication":"Chemical Engineering Science","doi":"10.1016/j.ces.2025.122681","date_updated":"2025-12-08T07:45:19Z","author":[{"first_name":"Patrick","last_name":"Franke","id":"93922","full_name":"Franke, Patrick"},{"first_name":"Markus","last_name":"Schubert","full_name":"Schubert, Markus"},{"full_name":"Hampel, Uwe","last_name":"Hampel","first_name":"Uwe"},{"first_name":"Eugeny Y.","full_name":"Kenig, Eugeny Y.","id":"665","last_name":"Kenig"}],"volume":321,"citation":{"ama":"Franke P, Schubert M, Hampel U, Kenig EY. However, these systems are relevant for prospective buyers to find a trustworthy seller. This observation applies especially to short-lived business relationships where fulfilling the performance promise is subject to a high degree of uncertainty. This paper explores the value of a reputation system for a business-to-business (B2B) context and focuses on three novel solutions for designing reputation systems. These solutions include selling ratings, conducting ratings as payments, and employing a counter-rating mechanism. We interview buyers to fathom the added value of these solutions in different contexts. Our findings suggest that such a system is useful for companies acting in less transparent markets and also helps when companies already have a good market overview. Depending on the market conditions and business context, the perceived value of the proposed system varies."}],"status":"public","_id":"54916","user_id":"74374","department":[{"_id":"195"}],"keyword":["Electronic Marketing","business-to-business","new design approach","reputation systems","value for buyers."],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}]},{"year":"2024","page":"617-625","citation":{"ama":"Kulkarni PJ, Tissen D, Bernijazov R, Dumitrescu R. These challenges can critically impact assets in the distribution grid—e.g., switchgears—intensifying the need to plan, conduct, and manage the maintenance of such assets. Predictive maintenance strategies that analyze assets' current and historical condition data have been discussed as promising approaches toward that end. However, the extant research focuses on designing and improving analytical algorithms or information technology (IT) artifacts while not considering how a maintenance service is cocreated by companies with IT. This research article posits that IT and service must be aligned closely, presenting an ensemble artifact comprising a digital industrial platform and a smart service system for predictive maintenance on the distribution grid. The artifact is evaluated by conducting a willingness-to-pay analysis with asset operators, documenting their demand for condition monitoring and predictive maintenance as an integrated solution, although they still struggle with even getting the condition data of their assets. Building on these results, we formalize the knowledge in the form of design principles and implications for managing the maintenance of critical assets in the distribution grid."}],"file":[{"date_created":"2024-04-18T12:26:27Z","creator":"dabe","date_updated":"2024-04-18T12:26:27Z","file_name":"Predictive_Maintenance_on_the_Energy_Distribution_GridDesign_and_Evaluation_of_a_Digital_Industrial_Platform_in_the_Context_of_a_Smart_Service_System.pdf","access_level":"closed","file_id":"53570","file_size":4070804,"content_type":"application/pdf","relation":"main_file","success":1}],"publication":"IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management","title":"Predictive Maintenance on the Energy Distribution Grid—Design and Evaluation of a Digital Industrial Platform in the Context of a Smart Service System","publisher":"Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)","date_created":"2024-01-19T11:47:56Z","year":"2024","quality_controlled":"1"},{"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"keyword":["Direct parameter identification","Machine learning","Convolutional neural networks","Strain rate dependency","Fiber reinforced plastics","woven composites","segmentation","synthetic training data","x-ray computed tomography"],"user_id":"105344","_id":"62078","project":[{"_id":"130","name":"TRR 285: Methodenentwicklung zur mechanischen Fügbarkeit in wandlungsfähigen Prozessketten"},{"_id":"137","name":"TRR 285 - Subproject A03"},{"name":"TRR 285 - Project Area A","_id":"131"}],"status":"public","abstract":[{"text":"Fiber reinforced plastics (FRP) exhibit strongly non-linear deformation behavior. To capture this in simulations, intricate models with a variety of parameters are typically used. The identification of values for such parameters is highly challenging and requires in depth understanding of the model itself. Machine learning (ML) is a promising approach for alleviating this challenge by directly predicting parameters based on experimental results. So far, this works mostly for purely artificial data. In this work, two approaches to generalize to experimental data are investigated: a sequential approach, leveraging understanding of the constitutive model and a direct, purely data driven approach. This is exemplary carried out for a highly non-linear strain rate dependent constitutive model for the shear behavior of FRP.The sequential model is found to work better on both artificial and experimental data. It is capable of extracting well suited parameters from the artificial data under realistic conditions. For the experimental data, the model performance depends on the composition of the experimental curves, varying between excellently suiting and reasonable predictions. Taking the expert knowledge into account for ML-model training led to far better results than the purely data driven approach. Robustifying the model predictions on experimental data promises further improvement. However, existing visual inquiry tools rarely consider recent design knowledge or ecosystem understanding. This leads to dissatisfied users and impedes the full realization of ecosystems’ potential. This short paper proposes an archaeological design science approach for enhancing the design of visual inquiry tools (e.g., a canvas) for ecosystems. Preliminary findings reveal 24 relevant artifacts, and shortcomings in the creation of conceptual models and rigorous evaluations. The proposed research process aims to develop design principles for more effective tools to bridge the gap between visual inquiry tools and ecosystems. This research contributes to design science research by reutilizing design knowledge and further developing the archaeological design approach. It also offers valuable information to practitioners about existing business model tools for the creation of ecosystems."}],"status":"public"},{"abstract":[{"lang":"ger","text":"Im Beitrag wird ein digitales Tool zur fächerübergreifenden Förderung von Textkompetenzen vorgestellt. To successfully position their products in the market, product managers need to gather and analyze comprehensive information about customers, developments in the products’ environment, product usage, and more. The digitization of all aspects of life is making data on these topics increasingly available – via social media, documents, or the internet of things from the products themselves. The systematic collection and analysis of these data enable the exploitation of new potentials for the adaption of existing products and the creation of the products of tomorrow. However, there are still no insights into the main concepts and cause-effect relationships in exploiting data-driven approaches for product management. Therefore, this paper aims to identify the main concepts and advantages of data-driven product management. To answer the corresponding research questions a comprehensive systematic literature review is conducted. From its results, a detailed description of the main concepts of data-driven product management is derived. Furthermore, a taxonomy for the advantages of data-driven product management is presented. The main concepts and the taxonomy allow for a deeper understanding of the topic while highlighting necessary future actions and research needs."}],"status":"public","type":"conference","publication":"2023 IEEE International Conference on Technology Management, Operations and Decisions (ICTMOD)"},{"publisher":"Elsevier BV","date_created":"2024-02-29T09:47:57Z","title":"Power-to-hydrogen and hydrogen-to-X energy systems for the industry of the future in Europe","quality_controlled":"1","issue":"44","year":"2023","keyword":["Hydrogen economy","Green hydrogen","Power-to-X","Hydrogen-to-X","Sector coupling"],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"publication":"International Journal of Hydrogen Energy","oa":"1","date_updated":"2024-03-08T19:49:10Z","author":[{"last_name":"Genovese","full_name":"Genovese, Matteo","first_name":"Matteo"},{"first_name":"Alexander","id":"103302","full_name":"Schlüter, Alexander","orcid":"0000-0002-2569-1624","last_name":"Schlüter"},{"last_name":"Scionti","full_name":"Scionti, Eugenio","first_name":"Eugenio"},{"last_name":"Piraino","full_name":"Piraino, Francesco","first_name":"Francesco"},{"first_name":"Orlando","last_name":"Corigliano","full_name":"Corigliano, Orlando"},{"full_name":"Fragiacomo, Petronilla","last_name":"Fragiacomo","first_name":"Petronilla"}],"volume":48,"main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1","url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ijhydene.2023.01.194"}],"doi":"10.1016/j.ijhydene.2023.01.194","publication_status":"published","publication_identifier":{"issn":["0360-3199"]},"citation":{"ama":"Genovese M, Schlüter A, Scionti E, Piraino F, Corigliano O, Fragiacomo P.
