  text:
Abstract
To select design guidelines engineers
have to identify relevant from a bewildering amount of design guidelines. In this
paper, a rule-based method for selecting design guidelines for material circularity
selection is presented. For this purpose, a generic Product Life Cycle model is
detailed with regard to Multi Material cycles (gPLC-MM). The presented method
is divided into four steps. Core of the presented method is the comparison of
circular product strategies with product life phases and material recovery processes.
Engineering activities and increments of the product architecture are used to
identify design guidelines. The results show that through the material circularity-oriented
design guideline identification method, the product architecture is designed for
different processes and technologies, to recover materials. The method allows
engineers to select guidelines in a more targeted and consolidated way in sustainability-friendly
    product engineering.

text: High streets across Europe continue to lose consumers to online retail, leading
to business closures and the decline of city centres, impairing cities’ overall
liveability. To counter this vicious cycle, our study presents smartmarket2, the
first instantiation of a digital actor engagement platform designed specifically
for high streets. smartmarket2 enables hybrid online-offline customer journeys
by connecting consumers to stores and other high street service providers. In
an action design research (ADR) project, we design, implement and evaluate smartmarket2,
involving 150 high street operators and 2,300 citizens in three cycles of building,
intervention and evaluation. We derive four design principles that contribute
prescriptive knowledge on the design of digital actor engagement platforms. Our
results reveal that such a platform is able to increase engagement, but that it
is subject to actors’ engagement dispositions.

  text:
Lightweight design is a common approach to reduce energy demand in
the use stage of vehicles. The production of lightweight materials is usually
associated with an increase in energy demand, so the environmental impacts of
lightweight structures need to be assessed holistically using a life cycle assessment.
To estimate the life cycle environmental impacts of a product in its developmental
stage, for example, by life cycle engineering, future changes in relevant influencing
factors must be considered. Prospective life cycle assessment provides methods
for integrating future scenarios into life cycle assessment studies. However,
approaches for integrating prospective life cycle assessment into product development
are limited. The objective of this work is to provide the methodological foundation
for integrating future scenarios of relevant influencing factors in the development
of lightweight structures. The applicability of the novel methodology is demonstrated
by a case study of a structural component in a steel, aluminium, and hybrid design.
The results show that appropriate decarbonisation measures can reduce the life
cycle greenhouse gas emissions by up to 95 percent until 2050. We also found that
shifts in the environmentally optimal design are possible in future scenarios.
Therefore, the methodology and data provided contribute to improved decision-making
    in product development.

text: "We study how competition between physicians affects the provision of medical
care. In\r\nour theoretical model, physicians are faced with a heterogeneous patient
population, in which patients\r\nsystematically vary with regard to both their
responsiveness to the provided quality of care and their\r\nstate of health. We
test the behavioral predictions derived from this model in a controlled laboratory\r\nexperiment.
In line with the model, we observe that competition significantly improves patient
benefits\r\nas long as patients are able to respond to the quality provided. For
those patients, who are not able\r\nto choose a physician, competition even decreases
the patient benefit compared to a situation without\r\ncompetition. This decrease
is in contrast to our theoretical prediction implying no change in benefits for\r\npassive
patients. Deviations from patient-optimal treatment are highest for passive patients
in need of\r\na low quantity of medical services. With repetition, both, the positive
effects of competition for active\r\npatients as well as the negative effects
of competition for passive patients become more pronounced. Our\r\nresults imply
that competition can not only improve but also worsen patient outcome and that
    patients’\r\nresponsiveness to quality is decisive."

the substitution of conventional materials with glass fiber mat-reinforced thermoplastics
(GMT) based on polypropylene (PP). The application of GMT by compression molding
is a widely used process in the automotive industry. However, application in the
commercial vehicle sector requires much larger dimensions, making it necessary
to clarify whether the manufacturing process and material are suitable for semi-structural
applications on this scale. To find this out, two replacement geometries are abstracted
in this study and manufactured by varying the main manufacturing parameters. The
feasibility can be demonstrated by recording and analyzing the resulting process
variables and measuring the formed fiber distribution. At the end of the paper,
recommendations are given for the production of GMT structures on the scale of
    commercial vehicles.

  text:
The development of automotive components with reduced greenhouse gas
(GHG) emissions is needed to reduce overall vehicle emissions. Life Cycle Engineering
(LCE) based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) supports this by providing holistic
information and improvement potentials regarding eco-efficient products. Key factors
influencing LCAs of automotive components, such as material production, will change
in the future. First approaches for integrating future scenarios for these key
factors into LCE already exist, but they only consider a limited number of parameters
and scenarios. This work aims to develop a method that can be practically applied
in the industry for integrating prospective LCAs (pLCA) into the LCE of automotive
components, considering relevant parameters and consistent scenarios. Therefore,
pLCA methods are further developed to investigate the influence of future scenarios
on the GHG emissions of automotive components. The practical application is demonstrated
for a vehicle component with different design options. This paper shows that different
development paths of the foreground and background system can shift the ecological
optimum of design alternatives. Therefore, future pathways of relevant parameters
must be considered comprehensively to reduce GHG emissions of future vehicles.
This work contributes to the methodological and practical integration of pLCA
into automotive development processes and provides quantitative results.

text: The global megatrends of digitization and sustainability lead to new challenges
for the design and management of technical products in industrial companies. Product
management - as the bridge between market and company - has the task to absorb
and combine the manifold requirements and make the right product-related decisions.
In the process, product management is confronted with heterogeneous information,
rapidly changing portfolio components, as well as increasing product, and organizational
complexity. Combining and utilizing data from different sources, e.g., product
usage data and social media data leads to promising potentials to improve the
quality of product-related decisions. In this paper, we reinforce the need for
data-driven product management as an interdisciplinary field of action. The state
of data-driven product management in practice was analyzed by conducting workshops
with six manufacturing companies and hosting a focus group meeting with experts
from different industries. We investigate the expectations and derive requirements
leading us to open research questions, a vision for data-driven product management,
and a research agenda to shape future research efforts.

text: The security of Industrial Control Systems is relevant both for reliable production
system operations and for high-quality throughput in terms of manufactured products.
Security measures are designed, operated and maintained by different roles along
product and production system lifecycles. Defense-in-Depth as a paradigm builds
upon the assumption that breaches are unavoidable. The paper at hand provides
an analysis of roles, corresponding Human Factors and their relevance for data
theft and sabotage attacks. The resulting taxonomy is reflected by an example
related to Additive Manufacturing. The results assist in both designing and redesigning
Industrial Control System as part of an entire production system so that Defense-in-Depth
with regard to Human Factors is built in by design.

text: "The volume comprises a variety of research approaches that seek to explore
and understand employees’ learning and development through and for work. Working
life reveals challenges through technological, economic and societal development
that can only rudimentarily be addressed by formal education and training. Workplace
learning becomes more and more important for employees and enterprises to successfully
cope with these challenges.\r\nWorkplace learning is a steadily growing field
of educational research but it lacks so far a scholastic canon – there is rather
a diversity of research approaches. This volume reflects this diversity by bringing
together researchers from different countries and different theoretical backgrounds,
presenting their current research on topics that all are relevant for understanding
presages, processes and outcomes of workplace learning. Hence, this volume is
of relevance for researchers as well as practitioners in the field and policy
    makers."

text: Technological developments such as Cloud Computing, the Internet of Things,
Big Data and Artificial Intelligence continue to drive the digital transformation
of business and society. With the advent of platform-based ecosystems and their
potential to address complex challenges, there is a trend towards greater interconnectedness
between different stakeholders to co-create services based on the provision and
use of data. While previous research on digital transformation mainly focused
on digital transformation within organizations, it is of growing importance to
understand the implications for digital transformation on different layers (e.g.,
interorganizational cooperation and platform ecosystems). In particular, the conceptualization
and implications of public data spaces and related ecosystems provide promising
research opportunities. This special issue contains five papers on the topic of
digital transformation and, with the editorial, further contributes by providing
an initial conceptualization of public data spaces' potential to foster innovative
progress and digital transformation from a management perspective.

text: While the Information Systems (IS) discipline has researched digital platforms
extensively, the body of knowledge appertaining to platforms still appears fragmented
and lacking conceptual consistency. Based on automated text mining and unsupervised
machine learning, we collect, analyze, and interpret the IS discipline’s comprehensive
research on platforms—comprising 11,049 papers spanning 44 years of research activity.
From a cluster analysis concerning platform concepts’ semantically most similar
words, we identify six research streams on platforms, each with their own platform
terms. Based on interpreting the identified concepts vis-à-vis the extant research
and considering a temporal perspective on the concepts’ application, we present
a lexicon of platform concepts, to guide further research on platforms in the
IS discipline. Researchers and managers can build on our results to position their
work appropriately, applying a specific theoretical perspective on platforms in
isolation or combining multiple perspectives to study platform phenomena at a
    more abstract level.

beschleunigen.

text: "Due to the increasing influences of a VUCA world, design thinking workshops
have been established as a standard technique to build solutions according to
uncertain customer needs. Concerning the ongoing pandemic and rising development
of solutions across organizations, more and more workshops were conducted online
with software support. However, existing software tools insufficiently address
the different workshop situations in terms of the process (i.e., fixed tasks to
conduct), the place (e.g., static online whiteboards), and people (i.e., synchronous
working of all stakeholders).\r\nTherefore, we propose a design science study
to develop a situation-specific software support that can be configured with flexible
development processes, different places, and task-related people. Based on practical
experience in existing research projects, we derive the initial design requirements
and map them to a set of design principles. Out of that, we design a concept with
its implementation as a software tool and point out open challenges. "

text: Sustainable product engineering is becoming increasingly important. This includes
the development of environmentally friendly products and the design for recycling.
In this paper a holistic method for the assessment of solution alternatives is
presented, in which the stakeholder perspectives along the generic product lifecycle
are taken into account. Finally, a new visualization is presented. By visualizing
the results in the integrated sustainability triangle, decision-makers in product
development can holistically assess the sustainability of the solution alternatives.

text: "Ultrasonic wire bonding is a solid-state joining process used to form electrical
interconnections in micro and\r\npower electronics and batteries. A high frequency
oscillation causes a metallurgical bond deformation in\r\nthe contact area. Due
to the numerous physical influencing factors, it is very difficult to accurately
capture\r\nthis process in a model. Therefore, our goal is to determine a suitable
feed-forward control strategy for the\r\nbonding process even without detailed
model knowledge. We propose the use of batch constrained Bayesian\r\noptimization
for the control design. Hence, Bayesian optimization is precisely adapted to the
application of\r\nbonding: the constraint is used to check one quality feature
of the process and the use of batches leads to\r\nmore efficient experiments.
Our approach is suitable to determine a feed-forward control for the bonding\r\nprocess
that provides very high quality bonds without using a physical model. We also
show that the quality\r\nof the Bayesian optimization based control outperforms
random search as well as manual search by a user.\r\nUsing a simple prior knowledge
model derived from data further improves the quality of the connection.\r\nThe
Bayesian optimization approach offers the possibility to perform a sensitivity
analysis of the control\r\nparameters, which allows to evaluate the influence
of each control parameter on the bond quality. In summary,\r\nBayesian optimization
applied to the bonding process provides an excellent opportunity to develop a
feedforward\r\ncontrol without full modeling of the underlying physical processes."

and construct convex hulls on the nanoscale, we investigate the capabilities and
limitations of a single deterministic finite automaton robot in the three-dimensional
hybrid model for programmable matter. In this model, active robots move on a set
of passive tiles, called configuration, with the geometric shape of rhombic dodecahedra
on the adjacency graph of the face-centered cubic sphere-packing. We show that
the exploration problem is equally hard in the hybrid model and in three-dimensional
mazes, in which tiles have the shape of cubes and are positioned at the vertices
of $\mathbb{Z}^3$. Thereby, a single robot with a constant number of pebbles cannot
solve this problem in the hybrid model on arbitrary configurations. We provide
algorithms for a robot with two pebbles that solve the exploration problem in
the subclass of compact configurations of size $n$ in $\O(n^3)$ rounds. Further,
we investigate the robot's capabilities of detection and hull construction in
terms of restricted orientation convexity. We show that a robot without any pebble
can detect strong $\O$-convexity in $\O(n)$ rounds, but cannot detect weak $\O$-convexity,
not even if provided with a single pebble. Assuming that a robot can construct
tiles from scratch and deconstruct previously constructed tiles, we show that
the strong $\O$-hull of any given configuration of size $n$ can be constructed
in $\O(n^4)$ rounds, even if the robot cannot distinguish constructed from native
    tiles.
