They are central to many European research initiatives and shape the data economy in Industry 4.0. Generally, they aim to create secure environments for cross-organizational data management and sharing. Currently, there is considerable interest in developing new data spaces in Industry 4.0, also accelerated through regulatory changes. However, key questions about what precisely characterizes a data space in Industry 4.0 remain unresolved. Against this backdrop, we build a taxonomy of data spaces in the Industry 4.0 context. We identified nine distinctive dimensions and 40 corresponding characteristics among the 19 data spaces analyzed. The taxonomy enables clearer classification and nomenclature of data spaces in this context. This short paper will ignite planned further research on data spaces in Industry 4.0 and contribute to a conceptualization of a taxonomic theory for interested researchers."}],"publisher":"Springer Nature Switzerland","date_created":"2026-01-27T11:56:10Z","title":"What Characterizes Data Spaces in Industry 4.0? Geographic Information Systems (GIS) allow for acquisition, management, analysis, and presentation of geospatial objects. With free geospatial data becoming available through open data policies and an increasing amount of digitally connected objects in the Internet of Things (IoT), GIS are becoming indispensable to Information Systems (IS) research. However, the consideration and relevance of GIS has only been investigated rarely. We examine, how and in which fields of application GIS have been studied in the IS literature and elicit the importance of GIS regarding their design and usage. A systematic literature review leads us to develop four research propositions. However, an increase in model accuracy with state-of-the-art methods, such as deep convolutional neural networks, results in less interpretability and transparency. Due to the ease of implementation, interpretation and transparency to both domain experts and non-experts, a rule-based method is proposed in this paper, for prognostics and health management (PHM) and specifically for diagnostics. The proposed method utilizes the most relevant sensor signals acquired via feature extraction and selection techniques and expert knowledge. As a case study, the presented method is evaluated on data from a real-world quality control set-up provided by the European prognostics and health management society (PHME) at the conference’s 2021 data challenge. Fokussiert wird dabei, inwiefern sich Arbeitsprozesse durch die Digitalisierung der Landwirtschaftsbetriebe verändern, wie Beschäftigte die mit der Digitalisierung verbundenen Veränderungen ihrer Arbeit erleben und welche Kompetenzen aus ihrer Perspektive benötigt werden, damit sie ihrer Tätigkeit adäquat nachkommen können. Welche Kompetenzen benötigen die Landwirtinnen und Landwirte zur Bewältigung ihrer digitalisierten Arbeitstätigkeit im Vergleich zur traditionellen Landwirtschaft und wie wurden die nun benötigten Kompetenzen zur Bewältigung der veränderten Arbeit erworben?"},{"lang":"eng","text":"This contribution discusses how the ongoing digitalisation of production and business processes (Industry 4.0) affects human work (Work 4.0) in the context of agriculture. Its focus is upon the questions of how working processes change on farms due to digitalisation efforts, how farmers experience those changes, and what competences are required to cope with upcoming work practices. Those questions are answered based on an interview study with ten dairy livestock farmers who work on farms that have already undergone digital transformation processes. Mit ihr werden derart tief grei- fende Veränderungen der Gesellschaft und Arbeitswelt erwartet, dass sie häufig als digitale Revolution bezeichnet wird. Gleichzeitig wirft die Auseinandersetzung mit diesen antizipierten Veränderungen viele noch unbeantwortete Fragen auf. Diese umfassen unter anderem Überlegungen hinsichtlich des Substitutionspotenzials menschlicher Arbeit durch die Digitalisierung, die Frage nach der Ausgestaltung der Rolle des Menschen in der Industrie 4.0 und schließlich Erwägungen in Bezug auf die Vorbereitung und Begleitung von Beschäftigten in der digitalen Transformation. Der vorliegende Beitrag gibt Aufschluss über die Dimensionen der Digitalisierung und die derzeit diskutierten Entwicklungslinien; er befasst sich weiterhin mit den sich daraus ergebenden Herausforderungen und Bedeutungen für die industrielle Arbeit und die Beschäftigten. Abschließend werden daraus abzuleitende Implikationen für die berufliche und allgemeine Bildung diskutiert."},{"lang":"eng","text":"Digitalization is currently a widely discussed topic. It is expected to bring such far-reaching changes in society and the working environment that it is often described as digital revolution. At the same time, dealing with these changes raises many unresolved questions. These include considerations on the substitution potential of human labor through digitalization, the question of how the role of humans in digitalized work may be shaped and, finally, considerations on how to prepare and support employees in the digital transformation. This article provides information about the dimensions of digitization and the lines of development currently under discussion; it also addresses the resulting challenges and effects on industrial work and employees.
