text: In applications of piezoelectric actuators and sensors, the dependability
and particularly the reliability throughout their lifetime are vital to manufacturers
and end-users and are enabled through condition-monitoring approaches. Existing
approaches often utilize impedance measurements over a range of frequencies or
velocity measurements and require additional equipment or sensors, such as a laser
Doppler vibrometer. Furthermore, the non-negligible effects of varying operating
conditions are often unconsidered. To minimize the need for additional sensors
while maintaining the dependability of piezoelectric bending actuators irrespective
of varying operating conditions, an online diagnostics approach is proposed. To
this end, time- and frequency-domain features are extracted from monitored current
signals to reflect hairline crack development in bending actuators. For validation
of applicability, the presented analysis method was evaluated on piezoelectric
bending actuators subjected to accelerated lifetime tests at varying voltage amplitudes
and under external damping conditions. In the presence of a crack and due to a
diminished stiffness, the resonance frequency decreases and the root-mean-square
amplitude of the current signal simultaneously abruptly drops during the lifetime
tests. Furthermore, the piezoelectric crack surfaces clapping is reflected in
higher harmonics of the current signal. Thus, time-domain features and harmonics
of the current signals are sufficient to diagnose hairline cracks in the actuators.

text: In this study on the use of gesture deixis during explanations, a sample of
24 videorecorded dyadic interactions of a board game explanation was analyzed.
The relation between the use of gesture deixis by different explainers and their
interpretation of explainees' understanding was investigated. In addition, we
describe explainers' intra-individual variations related to their interactions
with three different explainees consecutively. While we did not find a relation
between interpretations of explainees' complete understanding and a decrease in
explainers' use of gesture deixis, we demonstrated that the overall use of gesture
deixis is related to the process of interactional monitoring and the attendance
    of a different explainee.

  text:
We propose a new method to estimate and isolate the localization
of knowledge spillovers due to the physical presence of a person, using after-application
but pre-grant deaths of differently located coinventors of the same patent. The
approach estimates the differences in local citations between the deceased and
still-living inventors at increasingly distant radii. Patents receive 26 percent
fewer citations from within a radius of 20 miles around the deceased, relative
to still-living coinventors. Differences attenuate with time and distance, are
stronger when still-living coinventors live farther from the deceased, and hold
    for a subsample of possibly premature deaths. (JEL O31, O33, O34, R32)

text: With enhancing digitalization, condition monitoring is used in an increasing
number of application fields across various industrial sectors. By its application,
increased reliability as well as reduced risks and costs can be achieved. Based
on different approaches, technical systems are monitored and measured data is
analyzed to enable condition-based or predictive maintenance. To this end, machine
learning approaches are usually implemented to diagnose the health states or predict
the health index of the monitored system. However, these trained models are often
black-box models, not intuitively explainable for a human. To overcome this shortcoming,
a model-based approach based on physics is developed for piezoelectric bending
actuators. Such a model enables a transparent representation of the system. Moreover,
the model-based approach is extended by a parameter-estimation to account for
sudden changes in behavior e. g. caused by occurring cracks.

  text:
Abstract
Integrated thinking (IT) is a managerial
mindset increasingly discussed in the context of value creation. Through the lens
of systems theory, this study examines how the degree to which IT is embedded
in a firm's strategy and day‐to‐day business processes is associated with the
firm's social and environmental value creation. Using a broad international dataset,
we find strong evidence that our measure of IT is positively related to a firm's
sustainability performance (SP), which we use to operationalize social and environmental
value creation (or erosion). Our results also reveal that the increase in a firm's
SP might come at the cost of a short‐term decrease in financial performance (FP).
We find no indication, however, that IT induces a trade‐off between SP and long‐term
FP. Integrated thinking appears to stipulate long‐term financial value creation
instead. We further explore moderating factors within the organizational and institutional
context of our sample firms and highlight implications for society, corporate
    practice, and policymaking.

  text:
Green IS (GIS) research addresses environmental challenges brought
on by climate change and the need to preserve the natural environment. Within
this scope, design-oriented research, most notably within the Design Science Research
(DSR) community, aims to provide solutions to these environmental challenges in
the form of novel artifacts. The resulting IS solutions are valuable instruments
for reducing emissions, increasing energy efficiency, and mitigating waste. Over
the past 14 years, the IS research community was called upon multiple times to
focus on designing solutions suitable for facilitating sustainability. However,
it is unclear how these calls for action resonated within the design-oriented
research community. Against this background, we analyzed the landscape of design-oriented
GIS research by looking at 60 different GIS studies that have designed and evaluated
an artifact. By analyzing these publications, we were able to make six observations.
Based on these observations, we discuss how design-oriented GIS research can evolve
to live up to the expectations of creating an immediate positive environmental
    impact.

text: By monitoring the recoating process within polymer laser sintering production,
it was shown that multiple powder-spread-flaws can be detected. Those groove-like
flaws are expected to be the result of agglomerates jamming between the recoater
and the last powder layer. This work is analyzing the interaction between powder-spread-flaws
and part properties, showing the influence of the recoating process on the performance
of laser sintering parts. Therefore, artificial powder-spread-flaws are applied
to the build jobs of tensile test specimens which are measured and analyzed regarding
the elongation at break, strength and fracture position. For the characteristics
of the flaws, the artificial grooves are varied in depth and width. Furthermore,
the position of the flaw is changed form mid part to close to surface areas. It
was shown, that several flaws are visible at the part surface, resulting in stress
concentration and reduced performance. But there are as well parts with flaw-layers,
which are not visible after the build process on the part. Those parts can have
significantly reduced mechanical properties as well.

text: "Digital platforms have already led to disruptions in multiple B2C markets
and are becoming increasingly dominant in B2B markets. As a result, more and more
companies are trying to participate in the platform economy. However, the successful
development and operation of a digital platform is associated with significant
challenges, which leads to 85% of all platforms failing. A core challenge is the
dynamic nature of the platform economy, with varying strategic objectives at different

platform progress and adjust their strategy.\r\nUtilizing action research in the
real-world platform project AI Marketplace, we developed a lifecycle-oriented
performance management approach for digital platforms in B2B markets. It enables
platform operators to reflect on their position in the platform lifecycle, derive
relevant strategic objectives, and monitor them with suitable key performance
indicators. Hence, allowing them to secure the long-term success of their platform
    business."

  text:
This study uniquely employs a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis
(fsQCA) technique to account for complex relationships in consumption. The fsQCA
technique assumes that relationships are based on a set–subset relationship. This
assumption is fundamental when decision-makers are affected by information asymmetry
and are, thus, required to jointly evaluate the credibility and reliability of
a range of external signals. This issue also affects consumers in markets for
cultural goods, where the quality of products is not known with certainty in advance
of the purchase decision. Our study uses fsQCA to establish the effect of different
quality signals on consumption in the US market for video game software. Our results
show that reviews from professional critics alongside brand extension and multi-platform
release strategies act as signals of product quality and, therefore, lead to high
    sales performance.

  text:
Abstract
We have collected data from a world-wide
survey among COP delegates to empirically investigate preferences for certain
burden sharing rules among key groups in a setting that reflects the possibility
of observing concessions from negotiating partners. In our survey, the participants
had the opportunity to select and combine up to eight (pre-defined) burden sharing
rules and to assign relative weights to the selected rules in their preferred
bundle. We examine whether such a mechanism helps to overcome the currently strictly
(self-interested) strategic claims on equity in the negotiation process. We observe
that delegates from different groups of countries show a general willingness for
concessions. However, the degree to which different burden sharing rules are taken
into consideration partly differs between countries. As a key insight we report
that the individual assessment of the polluter-pays rule based on current emissions
does not only stress the persistence of the traditional Annex-B/Non-Annex-B division
but also suggests tendencies for a more fragmented grouping with different positions
between, for example, delegates from developing countries (i.e. G77 members) and
emerging countries (i.e. BASIC). At the same time, we observe tendencies for a
more harmonized view among key groups towards the ability-to-pay rule in a setting
    of weighted burden sharing rules.

text: Service Level Agreements are essential tools enabling clients and telco operators
to specify required quality of service. The 5GTANGO NFV platform enables SLAs
through policies and custom service lifecycle management components. This allows
the operator to trigger certain lifecycle management events for a service, and
the network service developer to define how to execute such events (e.g., how
to scale). In this demo we will demonstrate this unique 5GTANGO concept using
an elastic proxy service supported by a high availability SLA enforced through
    a range of traffic regimes.

text: 'Remaining useful lifetime (RUL) predictions as part of a condition monitoring
system are focused in more and more research and industrial applications. To establish
an efficient and precise estimate of the RUL of a technical product, different uncertainties have to be handled. To minimize the uncertainties of the RUL estimation, a reliable
and accurate prognostic approach as well as a good failure threshold are important.
Regarding the failure threshold, most often an expert sets a fixed failure threshold. However, neither the a priori known failure threshold nor a fixedthreshold
value are feasible in every application. Especially in the case of varying characteristics
of the monitored system, an adaptive failure threshold is of great importance
concerning the accuracy of the RUL estimation. Rubber-metal-elements, which are
used in a wide range of applications for vibration and sound isolation, are mon-itored
by thermocouples to allow for lifetime predictions. Therefore, the element’s state
is described by its temper-ature during its service life. Aiming to establish
accurate RUL predictions of a rubber-metal-element, uncertainties due to nonlinear
material characteristics and changing operational conditions have to be considered.
Consequently, different temperature-based failure threshold definitions are implemented
and compared within a particle filtering approach. '

  text:
Abstract
This study posits that, in the absence
of extensive mandatory regulation and auditing, differences in internal and external
corporate governance (CG) mechanisms will explain variations in choices concerning
corporate sustainability reporting and the interrelated and underlying corporate
sustainability performance (CSP). Specifically, we explore whether board monitoring
effectiveness as a major internal CG mechanism and stakeholder engagement as a
key external CG mechanism are positively associated with sustainability reporting
quality (SRQ), compliance with generally accepted sustainability reporting standards
(SRC) and guidelines, and CSP for a sample of Dutch firms that have voluntarily
disclosed sustainability reports during the years 2012–2016. In addition to these
direct effects, we also investigate the potential indirect effects of the CG mechanisms
on SRQ and SRC via CSP and distinguish between nonlagged and lag effects. Using
structural equation modeling, our results show that, in the short term, monitoring
effectiveness positively affects SRQ and SRC. Stakeholder engagement positively
affects SRQ and SRC in the short term and is positively related to SRQ via CSP
in the longer term, indicating that active stakeholders, over time, may drive
companies toward more sustainable business conduct. Finally, the findings that
CSP is positively related to SRQ but negatively related to SRC provide further
support for signaling and legitimacy theory, respectively. Companies with superior
CSP disclose high‐quality information on CSP to signal the firm's superior sustainability
performance, whereas poor performing companies legitimize their inferior CSP by
complying with more reporting standards, rather than by directly improving their
    underlying CSP.
