How to meet this need is an open question, but “behavioral insights” are likely components of future policy designs. Applying well-established behavioral insights to low-income house- holds raises questions of transportability as they are typically underrepresented in the existing evidence base. We illustrate this problem by conducting a randomized field experiment on scalable, low-cost design elements to improve program take-up in one of the world’s largest en- ergy efficiency assistance programs. Observing investment decisions of over 1,800 low-income households in Germany’s “Refrigerator Replacement Program”, we find that the transportabil- ity problem is real and consequential: First, the most effective policy design would not have been chosen based on existing behavioral insights. Second, design elements favored by these insights either prove ineffective or even backfire, violating ‘do no harm’ principles of policy advice. Systematic testing remains crucial for addressing the transportability problem, partic- ularly for policies targeting vulnerable groups.\r\n","lang":"eng"}],"publisher":" AWI Discussion Paper Series No. 755","_id":"56494","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"ddc":["330"],"user_id":"98922","title":"Transporting behavioral insights to low-income households: A field experiment on energy efficiency investments","status":"public","year":"2024","jel":["C93","D91","Q49"],"author":[{"id":"98922","orcid":"0000-0002-0653-7680","first_name":"Martin","last_name":"Kesternich","full_name":"Kesternich, Martin"},{"full_name":"Chlond , Bettina","last_name":"Chlond ","first_name":"Bettina"},{"full_name":"Goeschl, Timo ","first_name":"Timo ","last_name":"Goeschl"},{"full_name":"Werthschulte, Madeline","last_name":"Werthschulte","first_name":"Madeline"}],"date_updated":"2024-10-11T09:04:17Z","has_accepted_license":"1"},{"date_created":"2023-03-17T10:31:23Z","department":[{"_id":"156"}],"keyword":["impulse","forming","electrohydraulic","discharge","wire","pressure gauge","pressure field"],"type":"journal_article","issue":"1","publication":"Journal of Manufacturing and Materials Processing","abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"
The pressure fields generated by two simultaneous discharges have not been investigated on any notable scale for the electrohydraulic impulse forming method. In this study, the synchronicity of two discharges is ensured by the sequential connection of two wires mounted in two spark gaps in a common volume of liquid. The objective is to experimentally confirm the equilibrium of the energies evolved in two spark gaps by means of pressure measurements. In addition, multipoint membrane pressure gauges demonstrated the feasibility of easily recording detailed pressure maps. Based on the membrane deformation mechanism and material strengthening under static and impulse conditions, the processing procedure is further developed so as to achieve better accuracy in the determination of pressure field parameters. The practical equality of the pressure fields on the left and right halves of the flat-loaded area confirms the equality of energies evolved in the two spark gaps. This UV-enhanced neutralization of charges is a variation of the so-called environmental charge compensation, which uses the electrons produced by the photoionization of the ambient gas to neutralize the positive charges built at the sample surface. Adding an additional ionization source generates more charges at the sample but also larger amounts of electrons available for neutralization. The final surface charge equilibrium depends on different aspects of the experiment, such as the sample composition and geometry, the total ionization cross sections of the gas compared to the surface materials, the gas used, the luminosity and spot size of the sources used for photoionization, and the energy of the electrons present in the gas phase. Here we illustrate the efficiency of the UV-enhanced neutralization using three different dielectric samples with different geometries (a porous SiO2 monolith with an irregular surface, a flat mica sample, and a thin SiO2 film deposited onto a Si substrate), different X-ray spot sizes, and two different gases (N2 and Ar). The effect of biasing on the efficiency of the sample surface to attract electrons produced in the gas phase is also discussed.","lang":"eng"}],"date_created":"2023-06-12T08:09:57Z","keyword":["XPS","Near ambient pressure","Environmental charge compensation","UV"],"type":"journal_article","year":"2023","title":"UV-enhanced environmental charge compensation in near ambient pressure XPS","author":[{"full_name":"Arcos, Teresa de los","first_name":"Teresa de los","last_name":"Arcos"},{"first_name":"Hendrik","last_name":"Müller","full_name":"Müller, Hendrik"},{"last_name":"Weinberger","first_name":"Christian","full_name":"Weinberger, Christian"},{"first_name":"Guido","last_name":"Grundmeier","full_name":"Grundmeier, Guido"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["0368-2048"]},"date_updated":"2023-06-12T08:12:42Z","publication_status":"published","intvolume":" 264","article_type":"original","article_number":"147317","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"doi":"10.1016/j.elspec.2023.147317"},{"project":[{"name":"PC2: Computing Resources Provided by the Paderborn Center for Parallel Computing","_id":"52"}],"citation":{"ama":"Lange S, Hedayat C, Kuhn H, Hilleringmann U. The focus here will be on inductive localization, which uses high-frequency magnetic fields and the resulting induced voltage to provide localization through the coupling parameter mutual inductance. To achieve localization with high accuracy and best possible operation (resonance, signal strength, etc.), the coil parameters need to be well known. For this reason, some numerical methods for the calculation of these quantities are presented and validated. The demand for precise predictions increases with the desire of lightweight design in transportation due to environmental protection. Corrosion with its manifold of mechanisms often occurs together with the production of hydrogen by electrochemical reactions. Hydrogen embrittlement is one of the most feared damage mechanisms for metal constructions often leading to early and unexpected failure. Until now, predictions are mostly based on costly experiments. Hence, a rational predictive model based on the fundamentals of electrochemistry and damage mechanics has to be developed in order to reduce the costs. In this work, a first model approach based on classical continuum damage mechanics is presented to couple both, the damage induced by the mechanical stress and the hydrogen embrittlement. An elaborated two-scale model based on the selfconsistent theory is applied to describe the mechanical damage due to fatigue. The electrochemical kinetics are elucidated through the Langmuir adsorption isotherm and the diffusion equation to consider the impact of hydrogen embrittlement on the fatigue. The modeling of the mechanism of hydrogen embrittlement defines the progress of damage accumulation due to the electrochemistry. The durability results like the S-N diagram show the influence of hydrogen embrittlement by varying, e.g. the fatigue frequency or the stress ratio.","lang":"eng"}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"doi":"10.1007/978-3-030-97675-0_9","title":"A Damage Model for Corrosion Fatigue Due to Hydrogen Embrittlement","year":"2022","publication_identifier":{"isbn":["9783030976743","9783030976750"],"issn":["1869-8433","1869-8441"]},"author":[{"last_name":"Shi","first_name":"Yuhao","full_name":"Shi, Yuhao"},{"full_name":"Harzheim, Sven","first_name":"Sven","last_name":"Harzheim"},{"last_name":"Hofmann","first_name":"Martin","full_name":"Hofmann, Martin"},{"full_name":"Wallmersperger, Thomas","last_name":"Wallmersperger","first_name":"Thomas"}],"date_updated":"2023-01-02T11:10:26Z","publication_status":"published","place":"Cham","citation":{"mla":"Shi, Yuhao, et al. “A Damage Model for Corrosion Fatigue Due to Hydrogen Embrittlement.” Material Modeling and Structural Mechanics, Springer International Publishing, 2022, doi:10.1007/978-3-030-97675-0_9.","ama":"Shi Y, Harzheim S, Hofmann M, Wallmersperger T. The advantage of inductive localization is the usage of the magnetic fields, which have a very low influence of non-metallic materials in the environment and thus follows good applications in the area of medicine and biochemistry. This allows a precise localization of sensor platforms in inhomogeneous mixtures of materials, where classical methods have major problems with inhomogeneous dielectric conductivity or density. The calculation of the localization of the searched object differs from other methods such as ultrasound or electromagnetic waves due to the source-free propagation of the magnetic field. Therefore, new mathematical evaluation methods and systematic adaptations are necessary, which are presented in this paper in circuit analysis. Investigated micro FE-simulations show that the matrix of UD composites exhibits different average plastic behaviour, named as average asymmetric matrix plasticity (AAMP), when the composite behaves different under shear, longitudinal and transverse loadings. In this study, a non-linear mean-field debonding model (NMFDM) combining a mean-field model and a fibre–matrix interface debonding model, is developed to simulate UD composites under consideration of AAMP, fibre–matrix interface damage and progressive failure. AAMP is considered by using so-called stress mode factor, which is expressed in terms of basic invariants of the matrix deviatoric stress tensor and is used as an indicator for detection of differences in the loading mode. The material behaviour of UD composites with imperfect interface is assumed identical as for perfect interface and stiffness reduced fibres. Progressive failure criteria are established with consideration of fibre breakage and matrix crack for different fibre orientations. As a representative example for the NMFDM, a C30/E201 UD composite is studied. To verify the model, experiments are conducted on polymers, carbon fibres and UD CFRPs. Finally, the model is applied to simulate a perforated CFRP laminate, which shows excellent prediction ability on deformation, debonding and progressive failure."}],"publication":"Composites Part B: Engineering"},{"project":[{"_id":"52","name":"Computing Resources Provided by the Paderborn Center for Parallel Computing"}],"citation":{"mla":"Lange, Sven, et al. “Investigation of the Surface Equivalence Principle on a Metal Surface for a Near-Field to Far-Field Transformation by the NFS3000.” 2020 International Symposium on Electromagnetic Compatibility - EMC EUROPE, IEEE, 2020, doi:10.1109/emceurope48519.2020.9245697.","ama":"Lange S, Schroder D, Hedayat C, Hangmann C, Otto T, Hilleringmann U. This device allows to measure electric and magnetic fields in small distances to the DUT (Device under Test) with high geometric precision and high sensitivity. Leading to a fast examination of EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) problems, because the electromagnetic properties are better understandable and therefore easier to solve than e.g. measurements in a far-field chamber. In addition, it is possible to extrapolate the near-fields into the far-field and to determine the radiation pattern of antennas and emitting objects. For this purpose, this paper deals with the basis of this transformation, the so-called surface equivalence theorem. This principle is then adapted to the measurement of near-field scanners and implemented accordingly. Due to the non-ideal design of the near-field scanner, the effects on a far-field transformation are finally presented and discussed.","lang":"eng"}],"related_material":{"record":[{"status":"public","relation":"original","id":"21541"}]},"publication":"2020 International Symposium on Electromagnetic Compatibility - EMC EUROPE","keyword":["Near-Field Scanner","Near-Field to Far-Field Transformation","Directivity","Surface Equivalence Theorem","Huygens’ Box"],"type":"conference","department":[{"_id":"59"},{"_id":"485"}],"date_created":"2021-03-18T13:43:53Z","date_updated":"2022-01-06T06:55:03Z","publication_status":"published","title":"Investigation of the Surface Equivalence Principle on a Metal Surface for a Near-Field to Far-Field Transformation by the NFS3000","year":"2020","author":[{"first_name":"Sven","last_name":"Lange","full_name":"Lange, Sven","id":"38240"},{"full_name":"Schroder, Dominik","last_name":"Schroder","first_name":"Dominik"},{"last_name":"Hedayat","first_name":"Christian","full_name":"Hedayat, Christian"},{"first_name":"Christian","last_name":"Hangmann","full_name":"Hangmann, Christian"},{"full_name":"Otto, Thomas","last_name":"Otto","first_name":"Thomas"},{"first_name":"Ulrich","last_name":"Hilleringmann","full_name":"Hilleringmann, Ulrich"}],"publication_identifier":{"isbn":["978-1-7281-5580-7"],"eisbn":["978-1-7281-5579-1"],"issn":["2325-0364 "]},"doi":"10.1109/emceurope48519.2020.9245697","main_file_link":[{"url":"https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/9245697"}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}]},{"doi":"10.1049/pbcs072e_ch14","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"main_file_link":[{"url":"https://digital-library.theiet.org/content/books/10.1049/pbcs072e_ch14"}],"date_updated":"2022-01-06T06:55:03Z","publication_status":"published","publication_identifier":{"isbn":["9781839530494","9781839530500"]},"author":[{"first_name":"Dominik","last_name":"Schröder","full_name":"Schröder, Dominik"},{"id":"38240","first_name":"Sven","last_name":"Lange","full_name":"Lange, Sven"},{"first_name":"Christian","last_name":"Hangmann","full_name":"Hangmann, Christian"},{"full_name":"Hedayat, Christian","first_name":"Christian","last_name":"Hedayat"}],"title":"Far-field prediction combining simulations with near-field measurements for EMI assessment of PCBs","year":"2020","department":[{"_id":"485"}],"type":"book_chapter","keyword":["Huygens' box","NF-to-FF transformation","efficient FF radiation model","FF behaviour","EMI assessment","PCB","near-field measurements","efficient radiation model","far-field behaviour","RF design process","far-field prediction","Huygens'box principle","fullwave simulation","electronic system radiation","equivalent radiation source","electromagnetic simulation tool","near-field scan data","EM compatibility failure reduction"],"date_created":"2021-03-18T13:49:49Z","related_material":{"record":[{"id":"21542","relation":"other","status":"public"}]},"abstract":[{"text":"Using near-field (NF) scan data to predict the far-field (FF) behaviour of radiating electronic systems represents a novel method to accompany the whole RF design process. This approach involves so-called Huygens' box as an efficient radiation model inside an electromagnetic (EM) simulation tool and then transforms the scanned NF measured data into the FF. For this, the basic idea of the Huygens'box principle and the NF-to-FF transformation are briefly presented. The NF is measured on the Huygens' box around a device under test using anNF scanner, recording the magnitude and phase of the site-related magnetic and electric components. A comparison between a fullwave simulation and the measurement results shows a good similarity in both the NF and the simulated and transformed FF.Thus, this method is applicable to predict the FF behaviour of any electronic system by measuring the NF. With this knowledge, the RF design can be improved due to allowing a significant reduction of EM compatibility failure at the end of the development flow. In addition, the very efficient FF radiation model can be used for detailed investigations in various environments and the impact of such an equivalent radiation source on other electronic systems can be assessed.","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Tensorial Analysis of Networks (TAN) Modelling for PCB Signal Integrity and EMC Analysis","user_id":"38240","_id":"21542","edition":"1","publisher":" The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET)","page":"315-346 (32)","status":"public","place":"Croyton, UK","project":[{"_id":"52","name":"Computing Resources Provided by the Paderborn Center for Parallel Computing"}],"citation":{"ieee":"D. The so-called Sens-o-Spheres measure the temperature and in future the oxygen content and the pH of fluids. In order to evaluate the distribution of the measured values within the process, it is necessary to locate the wireless sensors. Because of the small size of the sphere (diameter 8 mm), inhomogeneous ambient media and the size of the reactor (less than 2 m), an inductive locating by magnetic fields with a frequency of f = 13.56 MHz is necessary. High-resolution resonant photocurrent spectroscopy on p–i–n devices reveals narrow linewidths and fully resolved fine structure splittings. We observe Lorentzian line shapes, which allow for the extraction of dephasing times as a function of the applied bias voltage. Coherent ps laser excitation results in pronounced Rabi rotations with increasing pulse area. For π-pulse excitation, we obtain more than 93 % of the theoretically expected photocurrent amplitude. Our results also demonstrate that such state-of-the-art InP-based quantum dots for the telecom band exhibit promising key parameters comparable to well-established InAs/GaAs counterparts."}],"issue":"2","publication":"Applied Physics B"},{"project":[{"_id":"31","grant_number":"257906","name":"Engineering Proprioception in Computing Systems"}],"publication":"Proc.
