This study addresses the formation of “viscous fingering” instabilities in structural adhesive joints, which are induced by thermally driven relative displacements during the liquid phase of the adhesive. Using a component-like specimen “bridge specimen,” the dependency of this phenomenon on process temperature and structural stiffness (rivet distance) was characterized. Experimental results reveal that while the relative displacement scales cubically with the free buckling length, the resulting adhesive area reduction follows an exponential trend, leading to a loss of effective bond area of up to 79%, which significantly compromises the joint strength in automotive applications. To predict these process-induced defects, a thermo-chemo-viscoelastic-viscoplastic adhesive model implemented in LS-DYNA was applied. The model combines curing kinetics, viscoelastic relaxation, and pressure-dependent plasticity and features a geometric damage parameter (D) that captures the adhesive area reduction caused by viscous fingering as an exponential function of the accumulated normal strain in the liquid phase. This damage parameter, calibrated on base-specimen level, was transferred to the component geometry. The simulation demonstrated high predictive accuracy with a maximum deviation of the adhesive area reduction of 3.1% compared to experimental data. This validates the model’s capability to predict manufacturing-induced damage in complex hybrid structures solely based on thermal boundary conditions.","lang":"eng"}],"author":[{"first_name":"Mohamad","last_name":"Al Trjman","id":"65415","full_name":"Al Trjman, Mohamad"},{"last_name":"Beule","full_name":"Beule, Felix","id":"66192","first_name":"Felix"},{"id":"537","full_name":"Teutenberg, Dominik","last_name":"Teutenberg","first_name":"Dominik"},{"first_name":"Gerson","last_name":"Meschut","orcid":"0000-0002-2763-1246","id":"32056","full_name":"Meschut, Gerson"},{"first_name":"Julia","last_name":"Riese","orcid":"0000-0002-3053-0534","id":"101499","full_name":"Riese, Julia"}],"date_updated":"2026-03-14T19:04:46Z","oa":"1","main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1"}],"doi":"10.1080/00218464.2026.2644394","publication_status":"published","has_accepted_license":"1","publication_identifier":{"issn":["0021-8464","1545-5823"]},"citation":{"ieee":"M. This allows improved overall mechanical properties with reduced wall thickness of the sheet metal part and, thus, lower weight of the components. One of the main focuses of research into such hybrid structures is on the adhesive properties and the respective failure behaviour of the interfaces. Generally, the failure behaviour under the influence of mechanical loads can be divided into adhesive, cohesive and mixed-mode failure. The correlation between observed failure behaviour and adhesion properties of the hybrid composite materials is analysed in detail in this work. The hybrid composite consists of an aluminium sheet of the alloy EN AW‑6082 T6 and thermoset carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) prepreg. The aluminium sheet was laser pretreated before hybrid production to improve the adhesion properties. The specimens studied were produced by the prepreg pressing process, in which the components are cured and joined simultaneously. The influences of the thickness of the CFRP part, the layup, the fibre orientation at the boundary layer, and the laser pretreatment parameters on the properties of the hybrid joints were investigated."}],"status":"public","publication":"The Journal of Adhesion","type":"journal_article","title":"Correlation between interlaminar shear strength of CFRP and joint strength of aluminium-CFRP hybrid joints","doi":"10.1080/00218464.2024.2439956","main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1","url":"https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/00218464.2024.2439956?src="}],"oa":"1","date_updated":"2026-02-20T12:49:17Z","publisher":"Informa UK Limited","author":[{"first_name":"Shuang","orcid":"0000-0001-8645-9952","last_name":"Wu","full_name":"Wu, Shuang","id":"48039"},{"full_name":"Delp, Alexander","last_name":"Delp","first_name":"Alexander"},{"first_name":"Jonathan","full_name":"Freund, Jonathan","last_name":"Freund"},{"first_name":"Frank","full_name":"Walther, Frank","last_name":"Walther"},{"full_name":"Haubrich, Jan","last_name":"Haubrich","first_name":"Jan"},{"first_name":"Miriam","full_name":"Löbbecke, Miriam","last_name":"Löbbecke"},{"first_name":"Thomas","full_name":"Tröster, Thomas","id":"553","last_name":"Tröster"}],"date_created":"2025-01-13T08:16:46Z","year":"2025","page":"1-26","citation":{"apa":"Wu, S., Delp, A., Freund, J., Walther, F., Haubrich, J., Löbbecke, M., &#38; Tröster, T. This is crucial for capturing the local material structure after processes introducing highly localized deformation such as mechanical joining processes between metal and fiber reinforced thermoplastics (FRTP). A generic finite element (FE) model is developed, incorporating interfaces discretized through either cohesive zone (CZ) elements or Coulomb friction-based contacts. The material parameters for the FE elements are derived from the initial stiffness of a statistical volume element (SVE) at micro scale modelled with an Arbitrary-Lagrange-Eulerian method for three load cases. The CZ properties calculated are based on the shear viscosity of the composite. The CZ and contact modelling approaches are evaluated using three load cases of the SVE, comparing force-displacement curves. Under simple loading conditions, such as normal pressure tension and bending, both methods produce similar results; however, in complex load cases, the CZ approach shows clear advantages in handling interface interactions and shows robust simulations. The CZ approach thus presents a promising method for simulating roving decomposition in FRTP-metal joining applications above the matrix{\\textquoteright} melting temperature."}],"publication":"Sheet Metal 2025","title":"Modeling approaches for the decomposition behavior of preconsolidated rovings throughout local deformation processes","publisher":"Materials Research Forum LLC, Materials Research Foundations","date_created":"2025-11-04T12:48:21Z","year":"2025","project":[{"_id":"130","name":"TRR 285: Methodenentwicklung zur mechanischen Fügbarkeit in wandlungsfähigen Prozessketten"},{"name":"TRR 285 - Subproject A03","_id":"137"},{"_id":"131","name":"TRR 285 - Project Area A"}],"_id":"62079","series_title":"Materials Research Proceedings","user_id":"105344","editor":[{"first_name":"G.","full_name":"Meschut, G.","last_name":"Meschut"},{"last_name":"Bobbert","full_name":"Bobbert, M.","first_name":"M."},{"first_name":"J.","full_name":"Duflou, J.","last_name":"Duflou"},{"first_name":"L.","full_name":"Fratini, L.","last_name":"Fratini"},{"first_name":"H.","full_name":"Hagenah, H.","last_name":"Hagenah"},{"first_name":"P.","last_name":"Martins","full_name":"Martins, P."},{"full_name":"Merklein, M.","last_name":"Merklein","first_name":"M."},{"first_name":"F.","last_name":"Micari","full_name":"Micari, F."}],"status":"public","type":"conference","doi":"10.21741/9781644903551-33","date_updated":"2026-02-27T06:43:19Z","author":[{"first_name":"Benjamin","last_name":"Gröger","full_name":"Gröger, Benjamin"},{"first_name":"Johannes","full_name":"Gerritzen, Johannes","id":"105344","orcid":"0000-0002-0169-8602","last_name":"Gerritzen"},{"full_name":"Hornig, Andreas","last_name":"Hornig","first_name":"Andreas"},{"first_name":"Maik","full_name":"Gude, Maik","last_name":"Gude"}],"citation":{"short":"B. The scale spanning heterogeneity of their material structure and its influence on the material behavior, however, presents significant challenges for most joining technologies, such as self-piercing riveting (SPR). During mechanical joining, the material structure is significantly altered within and around the joining zone, heavily influencing the material behavior. A comprehensive understanding of the underlying phenomena of material alteration during the SPR process is essential as basis for validating numerical simulations. This study examines the material structure at ten stages of a step-setting test of SPR with two FRTP sheets with glass-fiber reinforcement. Utilizing X-ray computed tomography (CT), the damage phenomena within different areas of the setting test are analyzed three-dimensionally and key parameters are quantified. Dominating phenomena during the penetration of the rivet into the laminate are fiber failure (FF), interfiber failure (IFF) and fiber bending, while delamination, fiber kinking and roving splitting are also observed. Process mining relies on event logs that capture explicit process knowledge; however, knowledge-intensive processes (KIPs) in domains such as healthcare and product development depend on tacit knowledge, which is often absent from event logs. To bridge this gap, this study proposes a LLM-based framework for mobilizing tacit process knowledge and enriching event logs. A proof-of-concept is demonstrated using a KIP-specific LLM-driven conversational agent built on GPT-4o. The results indicate that LLMs can capture tacit process knowledge through targeted queries and systematically integrate it into event logs. This study presents a novel approach combining LLMs, knowledge management, and process mining, advancing the understanding and management of KIPs by enhancing knowledge accessibility and documentation."}],"status":"public","_id":"60958","department":[{"_id":"196"}],"user_id":"51905","keyword":["Process Mining","Large Language Model","Knowledge Management","Knowledge-Intensive Process","Tacit Knowledge"],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"related_material":{"link":[{"url":"https://aisel.aisnet.org/amcis2025/sig_svc/sig_svc/11/","relation":"confirmation"}]},"year":"2025","citation":{"mla":"Brennig, Katharina. “Revealing the Unspoken: Using LLMs to Mobilize and Enrich Tacit Knowledge in Event Logs of Knowledge-Intensive Processes.” <i>AMCIS 2025 Proceedings. 11.</i>, 2025.","short":"K. This study presents a comparative analysis of two physically based debonding methods: the established hot-air process and a cryogenic cold process based on liquid nitrogen (LN2). The primary objective is to assess the ecological impact and process-related sustainability of both approaches.\r\nExperimental investigations were conducted on a component-representative triple-sheet structure that simulates common automotive flange joints. Thermal input was applied either by convective heating using a hot air gun or by direct cooling through a contact-based LN2 tool. The resulting temperature profiles were recorded using spatially distributed thermocouples. Subsequently, the outer panel was selectively debonded to replicate a repair scenario, and the mechanical integrity of the remaining adhesive joint was evaluated through Mode I testing of L-shaped specimens. Process data served as input for an Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) according to DIN EN ISO 14040.\r\nThe cryogenic method achieved a 40% reduction in carbon footprint compared to the hot-air process (0.337 kg vs. 0.559 kg CO2-equivalents), primarily due to its shorter process time and more efficient heat transfer. While the hot-air method’s impact is mainly driven by electrical energy use, that of the cold method stems from cryogenic media consumption. Notwithstanding certain disadvantages in specific impact categories, the LN2-based process exhibits a superior overall ecological performance and signifies a promising solution for repair- and recycling-oriented adhesive separation in structural vehicle applications.","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Journal of Advanced Joining Processes","title":"Comparison of the economic efficiency and sustainability of two debonding processes for structurally bonded sills","publisher":"Elsevier","date_created":"2025-07-30T11:04:28Z","year":"2025","quality_controlled":"1","article_type":"original","article_number":"100332","_id":"60837","department":[{"_id":"157"},{"_id":"876"},{"_id":"321"},{"_id":"9"}],"user_id":"103302","status":"public","type":"journal_article","doi":"10.1016/j.jajp.2025.100332","main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1","url":"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2666330925000536?via%3Dihub"}],"oa":"1","date_updated":"2026-01-06T08:22:54Z","volume":12,"author":[{"full_name":"Jordan, Alex","id":"62451","last_name":"Jordan","orcid":"0009-0007-9546-6071","first_name":"Alex"},{"last_name":"Hermelingmeier","id":"58649","full_name":"Hermelingmeier, Lucas","first_name":"Lucas"},{"first_name":"Julian","id":"44391","full_name":"Gilich, Julian","last_name":"Gilich"},{"first_name":"Gerson","last_name":"Meschut","orcid":"0000-0002-2763-1246","id":"32056","full_name":"Meschut, Gerson"},{"last_name":"De Santis","id":"52239","full_name":"De Santis, Marco Sebastian","first_name":"Marco Sebastian"},{"first_name":"Alexander","id":"103302","full_name":"Schlüter, Alexander","orcid":"0000-0002-2569-1624","last_name":"Schlüter"}],"intvolume":" 12","citation":{"apa":"Jordan, A., Hermelingmeier, L., Gilich, J., Meschut, G., De Santis, M. For this reason, this study focuses on the development of a new forming technology for Ti-6Al-4V sheet metal. It is based on combination of solution treatment by resistive heating with rapid tool-based quenching and subsequent annealing. This new “TISTRAQ” process is comparable with press-hardening already known for steels and hot die quenching known for aluminium alloys. One of the main influencing factors for this process is the heat transfer coefficient (HTC). It is an important driver for adjustment of basic parameters, as selection of tool material or the forming speed but also plays an important role while elaborating temperature distribution in the numerical model. Therefore, a new and unique test rig was developed to determine the HTC and to perform tool-based heat treatment at specimen level under laboratory conditions. The test rig was used to investigate the influence of the titanium-tool-lubricant system on HTC and cooling rate. Further the effect of heat treatment in the test rig and tool-based quenching on microstructure and mechanical properties was studied. To improve the prediction of the temperature distribution of the titanium during cooling, the HTC was integrated into the numerical process simulation"}],"publication":"IOM3. This new “TISTRAQ” process is composed of two steps. In terms of process technology, the first step is comparable to a direct press-hardening process already well known for steels. In this step, the Ti-6Al-4V sheet material is resistively heated to a temperature below β-transus Tβ and, after a very short holding time, simultaneously formed and quenched by use of water cooled tools. Thereby, the β phase undergoes a martensitic transformation. The second step is a subsequent short-time annealing, which leads to a hardening of the material. In this work, a new test rig using resistive heating technique was used in order to produce\r\ndifferent solution treated and tool quenched (STQ) and subsequently annealed (STA) states. In this paper, the effects of heating rate, solution treatment temperature and holding time on microstructure and mechanical properties are addressed. For the characterisation, tensile testing and scanning electron microscopy were used. By the systematic variation of applied processing parameters, dominating effects on microstructure and mechanical properties were evaluated. For example, the solution treatment temperature was found to have a significant effect on microstructural features and characteristic strength and strain values. The obtained results reveal a high potential for future technical applications.","lang":"eng"}],"status":"public"},{"publication":"Proceedings of the 46th Annual Conference of the Cognitive Science Society","type":"conference","abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"A detailed understanding of the cognitive process underlying diagnostic reasoning in medical experts is currently lacking. While high-level theories like hypothetico-deductive reasoning were proposed long ago, the inner workings of the step-by-step dynamics within the mind remain unknown. We present a fully automated approach to elicit, monitor, and record diagnostic reasoning processes at a fine-grained level. A web-based user interface enables physicians to carry out a full diagnosis process on a simulated patient, given as a pre-defined clinical vignette. By collecting the physician’s information queries and hypothesis revisions, highly detailed diagnostic reasoning trajectories are captured leading to a diagnosis and its justification. Four expert epileptologists with a mean experience of 19 years were recruited to evaluate the system and share their impressions in semi-structured interviews. We find that the recorded trajectories validate proposed theories on broader diagnostic reasoning, while also providing valuable additional details extending previous findings."}],"status":"public","file":[{"content_type":"application/pdf","relation":"main_file","success":1,"date_created":"2024-07-30T08:21:13Z","creator":"doba2","date_updated":"2024-07-30T08:21:13Z","access_level":"closed","file_id":"55430","file_name":"Battefeld_2024_Revealing-the-dynamics.pdf","file_size":486513}],"_id":"55429","project":[{"name":"TRR 318 - C5: TRR 318 - Subproject C5","_id":"128"}],"department":[{"_id":"660"}],"user_id":"91864","keyword":["Differential Diagnosis","Diagnostic Reasoning","Reasoning Process Analysis","Seizure","Epilepsy"],"ddc":["000"],"file_date_updated":"2024-07-30T08:21:13Z","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"quality_controlled":"1","has_accepted_license":"1","publication_status":"published","year":"2024","citation":{"short":"D. This points to a substantial opportunity for further optimization in material savings and process design. The current study delves into the advancement of sustainable manufacturing practices in the automotive industry, emphasizing the crucial role of lightweight construction concepts and AM technologies in enhancing resource efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. By exploring the integration of novel AM techniques such as selective laser melting (SLM) and laser metal deposition (LMD), the study aims to overcome existing limitations like slow build-up rates and limited component resolution. The study’s core objective revolves around the development and validation of a continuous process chain that synergizes different AM routes. In the current study, the continuous process chain for DMG MORI Lasertec 65 3D’s LMD system and the DMG MORI Lasertec 30 3D’s was demonstrated using 316L and 1.2709 steel materials. This integrated approach is designed to significantly curtail process times and minimize component costs, thus suggesting an industry-oriented process chain for future manufacturing paradigms. Additionally, the research investigates the production and material behavior of components under varying manufacturing processes, material combinations, and boundary layer materials. The culmination of this study is the validation of the proposed process route through a technology demonstrator, assessing its scalability and setting a benchmark for resource-efficient manufacturing in the automotive sector.
","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Metals","keyword":["additive manufacturing (AM)","selective laser melting (SLM)","laser metal deposition (LMD)","hybrid manufacturing","process optimization","316L","1.2709"],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}]},{"publication":"Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"Digital technologies have made the line of visibility more transparent, enabling customers to get deeper insights into an organization’s core operations than ever before. Due to an increasing volume of shipments, there is a significant need for more delivery vehicles. One approach to reduce the associated increase in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions is a new light weight design approach involving the substitution of conventional materials with glass fiber mat-reinforced thermoplastics (GMT) based on polypropylene (PP). The application of GMT by compression molding is a widely used process in the automotive industry. However, application in the commercial vehicle sector requires much larger dimensions, making it necessary to clarify whether the manufacturing process and material are suitable for semi-structural applications on this scale. To find this out, two replacement geometries are abstracted in this study and manufactured by varying the main manufacturing parameters. The feasibility can be demonstrated by recording and analyzing the resulting process variables and measuring the formed fiber distribution. At the end of the paper, recommendations are given for the production of GMT structures on the scale of commercial vehicles.
","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Materials Research Proceedings","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"keyword":["Compression Molding","Fiber Content","Process Development","Lightweight Design"]},{"publication":"ACS Sensors","abstract":[{"text":"The production of hydrogen and the utilization of biomass for sustainable concepts of energy conversion and storage require gas sensors that discriminate between hydrogen (H2) and carbon monoxide (CO). The oxidation states of copper (Cu+, Cu2+) and cerium (Ce3+, Ce4+) are investigated by XPS. The materials are used as resistive gas sensors for H2 and CO. The sensors show a stronger response to CO than to H2 and low cross-sensitivity to humidity. In comparison to already available studies, the unique novelty is the use of non-rotational symmetric pin structures for the CFRT/metal hybrid joining. Thus, a variation in the fiber orientation in the CFRT component as well as a variation in the non-rotational symmetric pins’ orientation in relation to the sample orientation is conducted. The created samples are consequently mechanically tested via single lap shear experiments in a quasi-static state. Finally, the failure behavior of the single lap shear samples is investigated with the help of microscopic images and detailed photographs. In the single lap shear tests, it could be shown that non-rotational symmetric pin structures lead to an increase in maximum testing forces of up to 74% when compared to cylindrical pins. However, when normalized to the pin foot print related joint strength, only one polygonal pin variation showed increased joint strength in comparison to cylindrical pin structures. The investigation of the failure behavior showed two distinct failure modes. The first failure mode was failure of the CFRT component due to an exceedance of the maximum bearing strength of the pin-hole leading to significant damage in the CFRT component. The second failure mode was pin-deflection due to the applied testing load and a subsequent pin extraction from the CFRT component resulting in significantly less visible damage in the CFRT component. Generally, CFRT failure is more likely with a fiber orientation of 0° in relation to the load direction while pin extraction typically occurs with a fiber orientation of 90°. It is assumed that for future investigations, pin structures with an undercutting shape that creates an interlocking joint could counteract the tendency for pin-extraction and consequently lead to increased maximum joint strengths."}],"type":"journal_article","publication":"Applied Sciences","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"article_number":"4962","keyword":["Fluid Flow and Transfer Processes","Computer Science Applications","Process Chemistry and Technology","General Engineering","Instrumentation","General Materials Science"],"user_id":"7850","project":[{"name":"TRR 285: TRR 285","_id":"130","grant_number":"418701707"},{"name":"TRR 285 - C: TRR 285 - Project Area C","_id":"133"},{"name":"TRR 285 – C01: TRR 285 - Subproject C01","_id":"145"}],"_id":"34223","citation":{"apa":"Popp, J., Römisch, D., Merklein, M., &#38; Drummer, D. This study focused on the coupling of Fischer–Tropsch synthesis for the production of synthetic diesel and kerosene with a high-temperature electrolysis unit. For this purpose, a process model was set up consisting of several modules including a high-temperature co-electrolyzer and a steam electrolyzer, both of which were based on solid oxide electrolysis cell technology, Fischer–Tropsch synthesis, a hydrocracker, and a carrier steam distillation. The integration of the fuel synthesis reduced the electrical energy demand of the co-electrolysis process by more than 20%. The results from the process simulations indicated a power-to-fuel efficiency that varied between 46% and 67%, with a decisive share of the energy consumption of the co-electrolysis process within the energy balance. Moreover, the utilization of excess heat can substantially to completely cover the energy demand for CO2 separation. The economic analysis suggests production costs of 1.85 €/lDE for the base case and the potential to cut the costs to 0.94 €/lDE in the best case scenario. These results underline the huge potential of the developed power-to-fuel technology.
","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Processes"}]
