  text:
In K-12 computing education, there is a need to identify and teach
concepts that are relevant to understanding machine learning technologies. Studies
of teaching approaches often evaluate whether students have learned the concepts.
However, scant research has examined whether such concepts support understanding
digital artefacts from everyday life and developing agency in a digital world.
This paper presents a qualitative study that explores students’ perspectives on
the relevance of learning concepts of data-driven technologies for navigating
the digital world. The underlying approach of the study is data awareness, which
aims to support students in understanding and reflecting on such technologies
to develop agency in a data-driven world. This approach teaches students an explanatory
model encompassing several concepts of the role of data in data-driven technologies.
We developed an intervention and conducted retrospective interviews with students.
Findings from the analysis of the interviews indicate that students can analyse
and understand data-driven technologies from their everyday lives according to
the central role of data. In addition, students’ answers revealed four areas of
how learning about data-driven technologies becomes relevant to them. The paper
concludes with a preliminary model suggesting how computing education can make
concepts of data-driven technologies meaningful for students to understand and
    navigate the digital world.

text: Joint value creation of organizations in ecosystems have a high failure rate,
stressing the need for tools that enable the alignment of business models through
visual inquiry. However, existing visual inquiry tools rarely consider recent
design knowledge or ecosystem understanding. This leads to dissatisfied users
and impedes the full realization of ecosystems’ potential. This short paper proposes
an archaeological design science approach for enhancing the design of visual inquiry
tools (e.g., a canvas) for ecosystems. Preliminary findings reveal 24 relevant
artifacts, and shortcomings in the creation of conceptual models and rigorous
evaluations. The proposed research process aims to develop design principles for
more effective tools to bridge the gap between visual inquiry tools and ecosystems.
This research contributes to design science research by reutilizing design knowledge
and further developing the archaeological design approach. It also offers valuable
information to practitioners about existing business model tools for the creation
    of ecosystems.

  text: "
Abstract
\r\n
Lithium niobate
has emerged as a promising platform for integrated quantum optics, enabling efficient
generation, manipulation, and detection of quantum states of light. However, integrating
single-photon detectors requires cryogenic operating temperatures, since the best
performing detectors are based on narrow superconducting wires. While previous
studies have demonstrated the operation of quantum light sources and electro-optic
modulators in LiNbO3 at cryogenic temperatures, the thermal
transition between room temperature and cryogenic conditions introduces additional
effects that can significantly influence device performance. In this paper, we
investigate the generation of pyroelectric charges and their impact on the optical
properties of lithium niobate waveguides when changing from room temperature to
25 K, and vice versa. We measure the generated pyroelectric charge flow and correlate
this with fast changes in the birefringence acquired through the Sénarmont-method.
Both electrical and optical influence of the pyroelectric effect occur predominantly
    at temperatures above 100 K.
"

text: Ferroelectric domain boundaries are quasi-two-dimensional functional interfaces
with high prospects for nanoelectronic applications. Despite their reduced dimensionality,
they can exhibit complex non-Ising polarization configurations and unexpected
physical properties. Here, the impact of the three-dimensional (3D) curvature
on the polarization profile of nominally uncharged 180° domain walls in LiNbO3
is studied using second-harmonic generation microscopy and 3D polarimetry analysis.
Correlations between the domain-wall curvature and the variation of its internal
polarization unfold in the form of modulations of the Néel-like character, which
we attribute to the flexoelectric effect. While the Néel-like character originates
mainly from the tilting of the domain wall, the internal polarization adjusts
its orientation due to the synergetic upshot of dipolar and monopolar bound charges
and their variation with the 3D curvature. Our results show that curved interfaces
in solid crystals may offer a rich playground for tailoring nanoscale polar states.

text: Structural strain severely impacts material properties, such as the linear
and nonlinear optical response. Moreover, strain plays a key role, e.g., in the
physics of ferroelectrics and, in particular, of their domain walls. μ-Raman spectroscopy
is a well-suited technique for the investigation of such strain effects as it
allows to measure the lattice dynamics locally. However, quantifying and reconstructing
strain fields from Raman maps requires knowledge on the strain dependence of phonon
frequencies. In this paper, we have analyzed both theoretically and experimentally
the phonon frequencies in the widely used ferroelectrics lithium niobate and lithium
tantalate as a function of uniaxial strain via density functional theory and μ-Raman
spectroscopy. Overall, we find a good agreement between our ab initio models and
the experimental data performed with a stress cell. The majority of phonons show
an increase in frequency under compressive strain, whereas the opposite is observed
for tensile strains. Moreover, for E-type phonons, we observe the lifting of degeneracy
already at moderate strain fields (i.e., at ±0.2%) along the x and y directions.
This paper, hence, allows for the systematic analysis of three-dimensional strains
in modern-type bulk and thin-film devices assembled from lithium niobate and tantalate.

  text: "
Brainwaves have demonstrated to be unique enough across individuals
to be useful as biometrics. They also provide promising advantages over traditional
means of authentication, such as resistance to external observability, revocability,
and intrinsic liveness detection. However, most of the research so far has been
conducted with expensive, bulky, medical-grade helmets, which offer limited applicability
for everyday usage. With the aim to bring brainwave authentication and its benefits
closer to real world deployment, we investigate brain biometrics with consumer
devices. We conduct a comprehensive measurement experiment and user study that
compare five authentication tasks on a user sample up to 10 times larger than
those from previous studies, introducing three novel techniques based on cognitive
semantic processing. Furthermore, we apply our analysis on high-quality open brainwave
data obtained with a medical-grade headset, to assess the differences. We investigate
both the performance, security, and usability of the different options and use
this evidence to elicit design and research recommendations. Our results show
that it is possible to achieve Equal Error Rates as low as 7.2% (a reduction between
68–72% with respect to existing approaches) based on brain responses to images
with current inexpensive technology. We show that the common practice of testing
authentication systems only with known attacker data is unrealistic and may lead
to overly optimistic evaluations. With regard to adoption, users call for simpler
devices, faster authentication, and better privacy.
\r\n <jats:p

In diesem

  text:
Service frontline encounters between customers and service providers
have been subject to fundamental changes in recent years. As two major change
agents, technology infusion and data privacy regulations are inextricably linked
and constitute a critical ethical and societal issue. Specifically, service frontlines—as
represented by human or technological agents, or some hybrid form—rely on customer
data for service provision, which subjects them to privacy regulations governing
the collection, submission, access, and use of any customer data thus captured.
However, scant research outlines the significant implications of evolving data
privacy regulations for service frontline encounters. To advance knowledge in
this domain, this research distills six key dimensions of global data privacy
regulations (fairness, data limits, transparency, control, consent, and recourse).
Employing an intelligences theoretical lens, the authors theorize how these dimensions
might become differentially manifest across three service frontline interface
types (human-based, technology-based, and hybrid). Carefully intersecting the
need for varying intelligences across data privacy regulatory dimensions with
the abilities of service frontline interfaces to harness each intelligence type,
this study offers a novel conceptual framework that advances research and practice.
Theoretical, managerial, and policy implications unfold from the proposed framework,
which also can inform a future research agenda.

text: The crystal family of potassium titanyl phosphate (KTiOPO4) is a promising
material group for applications in quantum and nonlinear optics. The fabrication
of low-loss optical waveguides, as well as high-grade periodically poled ferroelectric
domain structures, requires a profound understanding of the material properties
and crystal structure. In this regard, Raman spectroscopy offers the possibility
to study and visualize domain structures, strain, defects, and the local stoichiometry,
which are all factors impacting device performance. However, the accurate interpretation
of Raman spectra and their changes with respect to extrinsic and intrinsic defects
requires a thorough assignment of the Raman modes to their respective crystal
features, which to date is only partly conducted based on phenomenological modelling.
To address this issue, we calculated the phonon spectra of potassium titanyl phosphate
and the related compounds rubidium titanyl phosphate (RbTiOPO4) and potassium
titanyl arsenate (KTiOAsO4) based on density functional theory and compared them
with experimental data. Overall, this allows us to assign various spectral features
to eigenmodes of lattice substructures with improved detail compared to previous
assignments. Nevertheless, the analysis also shows that not all features of the
spectra can unambigiously be explained yet. A possible explanation might be that
defects or long range fields not included in the modeling play a crucial rule
for the resulting Raman spectrum. In conclusion, this work provides an improved
foundation into the vibrational properties in the KTiOPO4 material family.

  text:
The effect of plaque deposition (atherosclerosis) on blood flow behaviour
is investigated via computational fluid dynamics and structural mechanics simulations.
To mitigate the narrowing of coronary artery atherosclerosis (stenosis), the computational
modelling of auxetic and non-auxetic stents was performed in this study to minimise
or even avoid these deposition agents in the future. Computational modelling was
performed in unrestricted (open) conditions and restricted (in an artery) conditions.
Finally, stent designs were produced by additive manufacturing, and mechanical
testing of the stents was undertaken. Auxetic stent 1 and auxetic stent 2 exhibit
very little foreshortening and radial recoil in unrestricted deployment conditions
compared to non-auxetic stent 3. However, stent 2 shows structural instability
(strut failure) during unrestricted deployment conditions. For the restricted
deployment condition, stent 1 shows a higher radial recoil compared to stent 3.
In the tensile test simulations, short elongation for stent 1 due to strut failure
is demonstrated, whereas no structural instability is noticed for stent 2 and
stent 3 until 0.5 (mm/mm) strain. The as-built samples show a significant thickening
of the struts of the stents resulting in short elongations during tensile testing
compared to the simulations (stent 2 and stent 3). A modelling framework for the
stent deployment system that enables the selection of appropriate stent designs
before in vivo testing is required. This leads to the acceleration of the development
process and a reduction in time, resulting in less material wastage. The modelling
framework shall be useful for doctors designing patient-specific stents.

  text: '
Abstract
The Open Science movement is gaining
tremendous popularity and tries to initiate changes in science, for example the
sharing and reuse of data. The new requirements that come with Open Science poses
researchers with several challenges. While most of these challenges have already
been addressed in several studies, little attention has been paid so far to the
underlying Open Science practices (OSP). An exploratory study was conducted focusing
on the OSP relating to sharing and using data. 13 researchers from the Weizenbaum
Institute were interviewed. The Weizenbaum Institute is an interdisciplinary research
institute in Germany that was founded in 2017. To reconstruct OSP a grounded theory
methodology (Strauss in Qualitative Analysis for Social Scientists, Cambridge
University Press, Cambridge, 1987) was used and classified OSP into open production,
open distribution and open consumption (Smith in Openness as social praxis. First
Monday, 2017). The research shows that apart from the disciplinary background
and research environment, the methodological approach and the type of research
data play a major role in the context of OSP. The interviewees’ self-attributions
related to the types of data they work with: qualitative, quantitative, social
media and source code. With regard to the methodological approach and type of
data, it was uncovered that uncertainties and missing knowledge, data protection,
competitive disadvantages, vulnerability and costs are the main reasons for the
lack of openness. The analyses further revealed that knowledge and established
data infrastructures as well as competitive advantages act as drivers for openness.
Because of the link between research data and OSP, the authors of this paper argue
that in order to promote OSP, the methodological approach and the type of research
    data must also be considered.
'
