These can include operating vehicles that differ regarding their characteristics and application profile from privately owned cars in motorized individual transport. Studies on life cycle assessment and life cycle engineering of vehicle lightweight structures are mainly limited to these privately owned cars and the impact category of climate change. In this paper, a method for life cycle assessment-based engineering of lightweight structures in vehicles for various mobility system applications, including on-demand mobility services, is developed. The method enables the holistic life cycle assessment of lightweight structures in different mobility system applications considering parameter changes at the upstream products, component, subsystem, vehicle and mobility system levels, as well as the integration of results into engineering activities. A case study is used to show that the vehicle and mobility system application of lightweight structures can significantly influence their environmental impacts and the selection of ecologically preferable product designs. The application in vehicles for on-demand mobility services can lead to an increase in absolute use stage energy demand and environmental impacts compared to applications in privately owned vehicles for motorized individual transport. However, normalized to the transport performance provided, the lifecycle environmental impacts of structural components in vehicles for on-demand mobility services can be lower than in vehicles for motorized individual transport. The paper contributes methodically and with quantitative results to improved decision making in life cycle engineering activities for lightweight structures in mobility system applications.","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Cleaner Engineering and Technology","type":"journal_article","keyword":["Life cycle assessment","Life cycle engineering","Lightweight design","On-demand mobility","Shared mobility","Mobility services"],"department":[{"_id":"9"},{"_id":"321"},{"_id":"149"}],"date_created":"2025-08-06T06:53:27Z","status":"public","user_id":"44763","volume":28,"_id":"60885","publisher":"Elsevier BV","quality_controlled":"1","project":[{"grant_number":"19S23003Q","_id":"780","name":"NeMobil: NeMo.bil – System kooperierender Fahrzeuge für einen individualisierten Öffentlichen Verkehr"},{"name":"Climate bOWL: Climate bOWL: Climate neutral Business in Ostwestfalen-Lippe","_id":"405","grant_number":"005-2111-0020 "}],"citation":{"chicago":"Ostermann, Moritz, Eric Dierkes, Thorsten Marten, and Thomas Tröster. “Life Cycle Engineering of Lightweight Structures in Vehicles for On-Demand Mobility Services.” Cleaner Engineering and Technology 28 (2025). https://doi.org/10.1016/j.clet.2025.101058.","short":"M. Companies try to tackle challenges regarding their differentiation and profitability using digital services. One specific type of digital services are smart services, which are digital services built on data from smart products. Introducing these kinds of offerings into the portfolio of manufacturing companies is not trivial. Moreover, they require conscious action to align all relevant capabilities to realize the respective business goals. However, what capabilities are generally relevant for smart services remains opaque. We conducted a systematic literature review to identify them and extended the results through an interview study. Our analysis results in 78 capabilities clustered among 12 principles and six dimensions. These results provide significant support for the smart service transformation of manufacturing companies and for structuring the research field of smart services.","lang":"eng"}],"citation":{"short":"C. For example, property damage to shared accommodations imposes burdens on both sharing platforms and hosts, especially if misbehaving guests purposefully, not coincidentally conceal, or fail to report damages. Such misbehavior might be facilitated by remote listing management and the lack of face-to-face interactions between hosts and guests. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of host–guest interaction modes (face-to-face, online-only) and frequency on guests’ misbehavior concealment intentions. Social identification and irritation emerged as bright- and dark side mediators, respectively. Guests who interacted face-to-face (vs. online-only) with hosts exhibited weaker intentions to conceal their misbehavior due to increased social identification. Platforms can elicit social identification by engaging guests in virtual communities. However, when face-to-face interactions become excessive, guests experience irritation and are more likely to conceal their misbehavior. These insights offer practical implications for both peer-to-peer sharing platforms and hosts.","lang":"eng"}],"_id":"53200","publisher":"Elsevier BV","volume":177,"user_id":"103813","status":"public","citation":{"ama":"Ozuna E, Steinhoff L. “Look me in the eye, customer”: How do face-to-face interactions in peer-to-peer sharing economy services affect customers’ misbehavior concealment intentions? Journal of Business Research. 2024;177. doi:10.1016/j.jbusres.2024.114582","bibtex":"@article{Ozuna_Steinhoff_2024, title={“Look me in the eye, customer”: How do face-to-face interactions in peer-to-peer sharing economy services affect customers’ misbehavior concealment intentions?}, volume={177}, DOI={10.1016/j.jbusres.2024.114582}, number={114582}, journal={Journal of Business Research}, publisher={Elsevier BV}, author={Ozuna, Edna and Steinhoff, Lena}, year={2024} }","mla":"Ozuna, Edna, and Lena Steinhoff. “‘Look Me in the Eye, Customer’: How Do Face-to-Face Interactions in Peer-to-Peer Sharing Economy Services Affect Customers’ Misbehavior Concealment Intentions?” Journal of Business Research, vol. 177, 114582, Elsevier BV, 2024, doi:10.1016/j.jbusres.2024.114582.","short":"E. These challenges can critically impact assets in the distribution grid—e.g., switchgears—intensifying the need to plan, conduct, and manage the maintenance of such assets. Predictive maintenance strategies that analyze assets' current and historical condition data have been discussed as promising approaches toward that end. However, the extant research focuses on designing and improving analytical algorithms or information technology (IT) artifacts while not considering how a maintenance service is cocreated by companies with IT. This research article posits that IT and service must be aligned closely, presenting an ensemble artifact comprising a digital industrial platform and a smart service system for predictive maintenance on the distribution grid. The artifact is evaluated by conducting a willingness-to-pay analysis with asset operators, documenting their demand for condition monitoring and predictive maintenance as an integrated solution, although they still struggle with even getting the condition data of their assets. Building on these results, we formalize the knowledge in the form of design principles and implications for managing the maintenance of critical assets in the distribution grid."}],"publication":"IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management","type":"journal_article","keyword":["Design science research","digital platform","distribution grid","IS design","predictive maintenance","smart services"],"file":[{"date_created":"2024-04-18T12:26:27Z","creator":"dabe","file_id":"53570","content_type":"application/pdf","success":1,"relation":"main_file","date_updated":"2024-04-18T12:26:27Z","file_name":"Predictive_Maintenance_on_the_Energy_Distribution_GridDesign_and_Evaluation_of_a_Digital_Industrial_Platform_in_the_Context_of_a_Smart_Service_System.pdf","file_size":4070804,"access_level":"closed"}],"date_created":"2024-01-19T11:47:56Z","has_accepted_license":"1","status":"public","ddc":["620"],"user_id":"82872","volume":71,"page":"3641-3655","_id":"50649","publisher":"Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)","quality_controlled":"1","project":[{"_id":"651","grant_number":"03E16012F","name":"FLEMING: FLEMING - Flexible Monitoring- und Regelsysteme für die Energie- und Mobilitätswende im Verteilnetz durch Einsatz von Künstlicher Intelligenz"}],"file_date_updated":"2024-04-18T12:26:27Z","citation":{"short":"P. zur Heiden, J. This creates new challenges for organizations trying to consistently deliver high-quality customer experiences. In this paper we conduct an empirical analysis of customers’ preferences and their willingness-to-pay for different degrees of process transparency, using the example of digitally-enabled business-to-customer delivery services. Applying conjoint analysis, we quantify customers’ preferences and willingness-to-pay for different service attributes and levels. Our contributions are two-fold: For research, we provide empirical measurements of customers’ preferences and their willingness-to-pay for process transparency, suggesting that more is not always better. Additionally, we provide a blueprint of how conjoint analysis can be applied to study design decisions regarding changing an organization’s digital line of visibility. For practice, our findings enable service managers to make decisions about process transparency and establishing different levels of service quality.\r\n"}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"_id":"37058","user_id":"51905","year":"2023","title":"More Isn’t Always Better – Measuring Customers’ Preferences for Digital Process Transparency","status":"public","conference":{"end_date":"20230106","start_date":"20230103","name":" 56th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","location":"Lāhainā"},"publication_identifier":{"unknown":["978-0-9981331-6-4"]},"author":[{"first_name":"Katharina","last_name":"Brennig","full_name":"Brennig, Katharina","id":"51905"},{"id":"72849","full_name":"Müller, Oliver","first_name":"Oliver","last_name":"Müller"}],"date_updated":"2024-01-11T11:21:28Z","publication_status":"published","has_accepted_license":"1"},{"date_updated":"2022-01-06T06:59:21Z","publication_status":"published","article_type":"original","year":"2018","title":"Triadic relationships in the context of services for animal companions","status":"public","author":[{"id":"24869","full_name":"Rötzmeier-Keuper, Julia","last_name":"Rötzmeier-Keuper","first_name":"Julia"},{"last_name":"Hendricks","first_name":"Jennifer","full_name":"Hendricks, Jennifer"},{"id":"36392","full_name":"Wünderlich, Nancy","last_name":"Wünderlich","first_name":"Nancy"},{"full_name":"Schmitz, Gertrud","last_name":"Schmitz","first_name":"Gertrud"}],"user_id":"37741","page":"295--303","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"_id":"3516","publisher":"Elsevier","abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"Triadic service relationships comprise complex relationships in which not only the customer and provider are involved as partners but also other individuals with caregiving relationships with the customer. A triadic constellation may arise in the context of services for animal companions, for example, when veterinarians provide counsel and treatment to the animal companion and its owner. Through interviews with both owners of animal companions and providers of services for animal companions, this study explores typical constellations and characteristics of the three relationships in this service triad. In line with balance theory, the results show that four distinct types of triadic relationships exist in services for animal companions: the harmonious, the dysfunctional, the challenging, and the doubtful triad. The study highlights the potential conflicts and dynamics in the triads to advise providers on how to address customers depending on the types of triads to which they belong."}],"publication":"Journal of Business Research","issue":"85","citation":{"mla":"Rötzmeier-Keuper, Julia, et al. “Triadic Relationships in the Context of Services for Animal Companions.” Journal of Business Research, no. 85, Elsevier, 2018, pp. 295--303.","bibtex":"@article{Rötzmeier-Keuper_Hendricks_Wünderlich_Schmitz_2018, title={Triadic relationships in the context of services for animal companions}, number={85}, journal={Journal of Business Research}, publisher={Elsevier}, author={Rötzmeier-Keuper, Julia and Hendricks, Jennifer and Wünderlich, Nancy and Schmitz, Gertrud}, year={2018}, pages={295--303} }","ama":"Rötzmeier-Keuper J, Hendricks J, Wünderlich N, Schmitz G. However, these descriptions are susceptible to linguistic inaccuracies such as ambiguities and incompleteness that can harm the development process. There is a number of software solutions that can detect deficits in requirements descriptions and partially solve them, but they are often hard to use and not suitable for end users. For this reason, we develop a software system that helps end-users to create unambiguous and complete requirements descriptions by combining existing expert tools and controlling them using automatic compensation strategies. In order to recognize the necessity of individual compensation methods in the descriptions, we have developed linguistic indicators, which we present in this paper. Based on these indicators, the whole text analysis pipeline is ad-hoc configured and thus adapted to the individual circumstances of a requirements description."}],"publication":"Proceedings of the 51st Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","doi":"10125/50609","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"main_file_link":[{"url":"https://scholarspace.manoa.hawaii.edu/bitstream/10125/50609/1/paper0722.pdf","open_access":"1"}],"date_updated":"2022-01-06T07:01:01Z","publication_status":"published","publication_identifier":{"isbn":["978-0-9981331-1-9"]},"author":[{"full_name":"Bäumer, Frederik Simon","first_name":"Frederik Simon","last_name":"Bäumer","id":"38837"},{"id":"42496","full_name":"Geierhos, Michaela","last_name":"Geierhos","orcid":"0000-0002-8180-5606","first_name":"Michaela"}],"year":"2018","title":"Flexible Ambiguity Resolution and Incompleteness Detection in Requirements Descriptions via an Indicator-based Configuration of Text Analysis Pipelines","oa":"1","project":[{"name":"SFB 901","_id":"1"},{"name":"SFB 901 - Project Area B","_id":"3"},{"name":"SFB 901 - Subproject B1","_id":"9"}],"quality_controlled":"1","citation":{"ieee":"F. Organizations that formerly concentrated on transactional sales thus confront a new challenge associated with managing service usage—retention and extracting value from investments in smart technology. This study combines a marketing and an information systems perspective in a field study conducted jointly with a large European car manufacturer. Understanding the renewal decision for IT-based service contracts requires knowledge from both disciplines. The paper shows that combining behavioral predictor variables stemming from marketing research and technology-related perceptual variables stemming from technology acceptance research increases the explanatory power and prediction accuracy of forecasting models for customer renewal decisions. Specifically, the authors show that perceptions of usefulness become more important the longer customers use IT-based services and the more services they use within the service contract.","lang":"eng"}],"citation":{"ama":"Wangenheim F v, Wünderlich N, Schumann JH. The most common ontology for semantic data, schema.org, is supported by all major search engines and describes over 500 data types, including calendar events, recipes, products, and TV shows. As of today, users wishing to pass this data to their favorite applications, e.g., their calendars, cookbooks, price comparison applications or even smart devices such as TV receivers, rely on cumbersome and error-prone workarounds such as reentering the data or a series of copy and paste operations. In this paper, we present Semantic Data Mediator (SDM), an approach that allows the easy transfer of semantic data to a multitude of services, ranging from web services to applications installed on different devices. SDM extracts semantic data from the currently displayed web page on the client-side, offers suitable services to the user, and by the press of a button, forwards this data to the desired service while doing all the necessary data conversion and service interface adaptation in between. To realize this, we built a reusable repository of service descriptions, data converters, and service adapters, which can be extended by the crowd. Our approach for linking services to websites relies solely on semantic data and does not require any additional support by either website or service developers. We have fully implemented our approach and present a real-world case study demonstrating its feasibility and usefulness.","lang":"eng"}],"date_created":"2018-11-26T11:49:31Z","department":[{"_id":"66"}],"type":"conference","keyword":["Services","Websites","Semantic Data","schema.org","Data Conversion","Interface Adaptation","Mediation"],"author":[{"last_name":"Wolters","first_name":"Dennis","full_name":"Wolters, Dennis","id":"11308"},{"id":"11871","orcid":"0000-0002-4525-6865","first_name":"Stefan","last_name":"Heindorf","full_name":"Heindorf, Stefan"},{"id":"39928","full_name":"Kirchhoff, Jonas","first_name":"Jonas","last_name":"Kirchhoff"},{"full_name":"Engels, Gregor","first_name":"Gregor","last_name":"Engels","id":"107"}],"publication_identifier":{"isbn":["9781538607527"]},"year":"2017","title":"Linking Services to Websites by Leveraging Semantic Data","publication_status":"published","date_updated":"2022-10-15T20:01:55Z","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"main_file_link":[{"url":"https://cs.uni-paderborn.de/fileadmin/informatik/fg/dbis/Publikationen/2017/wolters2017_ICWS.pdf","open_access":"1"}],"doi":"10.1109/icws.2017.80"},{"abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"Purpose\r\n– The purpose of this paper is to craft a future research agenda to advance smart service research and practice. Smart services are delivered to or via intelligent objects that feature awareness and connectivity. For service researchers and managers, one of the most fascinating aspects of smart service provision is that the connected object is able to sense its own condition and its surroundings and thus allows for real-time data collection, continuous communication and interactive feedback. \r\n\r\nDesign/methodology/approach\r\n– This article is based on discussions in the workshop on “Fresh perspectives on technology in service” at the International Network of Service Researchers on September 26, 2014 at CTF, Karlstad, Sweden. The paper summarizes the discussion on smart services, adds an extensive literature review, provides examples from business practice and develops a structured approach to new research avenues. \r\n\r\nFindings\r\n– We propose that smart services vary on their individual level of autonomous decision-making, visibility and embeddedness in objects and customer lives. Based on a discussion of these characteristics, we identify research avenues regarding the perception and nature of smart services, the adoption of smart services, the innovation through smart services as well as regarding the development of new business models. \r\n\r\nOriginality/value\r\n– Smart services is a new emerging topic in service marketing research, their implications on organizations, customers and the service landscape have not been fully explored. We provide a fresh perspective on service research by characterizing relevant aspects of smart service that will stimulate fruitful future research and advance the understanding and practice of smart services."}],"issue":"6/7","publication":"Journal of Services Marketing","department":[{"_id":"181"}],"type":"journal_article","keyword":["Connected services","Intelligent object","New service type","Smart services"],"date_created":"2018-11-15T11:27:26Z","intvolume":" 29","article_type":"original","date_updated":"2022-01-06T07:02:36Z","publication_status":"published","author":[{"first_name":"Nancy","last_name":"Wünderlich","full_name":"Wünderlich, Nancy","id":"36392"},{"full_name":"Heinonen, Kristina","first_name":"Kristina","last_name":"Heinonen"},{"last_name":"Ostrom","first_name":"Amy L","full_name":"Ostrom, Amy L"},{"full_name":"Patricio, Lia","last_name":"Patricio","first_name":"Lia"},{"last_name":"Sousa","first_name":"Rui","full_name":"Sousa, Rui"},{"full_name":"Voss, Chris","last_name":"Voss","first_name":"Chris"},{"full_name":"Lemmink, Jos","last_name":"Lemmink","first_name":"Jos"}],"year":"2015","title":"Futurizing” Smart Service: Implications for Service Researchers and Managers.","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"citation":{"ama":"Wünderlich N, Heinonen K, Ostrom AL, et al. Technological breakthroughs have generated new forms of services, such as self-services or remote services. Although these encounters are qualitatively different from traditional service provision, prior service management literature thus far had paid little attention to theory development and the systematization of technology-based service encounters. To fill this research gap, the present study outlines how new types of technology-based services fit into existing service typologies and provides an extension of existing frameworks to capture their unique characteristics.
