  text:
Abstract
We consider a geodesic billiard system
consisting of a complete Riemannian manifold and an obstacle submanifold with
boundary at which the trajectories of the geodesic flow experience specular reflections.
We show that if the geodesic billiard system is hyperbolic on its trapped set
and the latter is compact and non-grazing, the techniques for open hyperbolic
systems developed by Dyatlov and Guillarmou (Ann Henri Poincaré 17(11):3089–3146,
2016) can be applied to a smooth model for the discontinuous flow defined by the
non-grazing billiard trajectories. This allows us to obtain a meromorphic resolvent
for the generator of the billiard flow. As an application we prove a meromorphic
continuation of weighted zeta functions together with explicit residue formulae.
In particular, our results apply to scattering by convex obstacles in the Euclidean
    plane.

text: In this work, we utilize thin dielectric meta-atoms placed on a silver substrate
to efficiently enhance and manipulate the third-harmonic generation. We theoretically
and experimentally reveal that when the structural symmetry of the meta-atom is
incompatible with the lattice symmetry of an array, some generalized nonlinear
geometric phases appear, which offers new possibilities for harmonic generation
control beyond the accessible symmetries governed by the selection rule. The underlying
mechanism is attributed to the modified rotation of the effective principal axis
of a dense meta-atom array, where the strong coupling among the units gives rise
to a generalized linear geometric phase modulation of the pump light. Therefore,
nonlinear geometric phases carried by third-harmonic emissions are the natural
result of the wave-mixing process among the modes excited at the fundamental frequency.
This mechanism further points out a new strategy to predict the nonlinear geometric
phases delivered by the nanostructures according to their linear responses. Our
design is simple and efficient and offers alternatives for the nonlinear meta-devices
that are capable of flexible photon generation and manipulation.

text: Macrocyclization reactions are still challenging due to competing oligomerization,
which requires the use of small substrate concentrations. Here, the cationic tungsten
imido and tungsten oxo alkylidene N-heterocyclic carbene complexes [[W(N-2,6-Cl2-C6H3)(CHCMe2Ph(OC6F5)(pivalonitrile)(IMes)+
    B(ArF)4−] (W1) and [W(O)(CHCMe2Ph(OCMe(CF3)2)(IMes)(CH3CN)+ B(ArF)4−] (W2) (IMes=1,3-dimesitylimidazol-2-ylidene;
    B(ArF)4−=tetrakis(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl borate) have been immobilized
inside the pores of ordered mesoporous silica (OMS) with pore diameters of 3.3
and 6.8 nm, respectively, using a pore-selective immobilization protocol. X-ray
absorption spectroscopy of W1@OMS showed that even though the catalyst structure
is contracted due to confinement by the mesopores, both the oxidation state and
structure of the catalyst stayed intact upon immobilization. Catalytic testing
with four differently sized α,ω-dienes revealed a dramatically increased macrocyclization
(MC) and Z-selectivity of the supported catalysts compared to the homogenous progenitors,
allowing high substrate concentrations of 25 mM. With the supported complexes,
    a maximum increase in MC-selectivity from 27 to 81 % and in Z-selectivity from
17 to 34 % was achieved. In general, smaller mesopores exhibited a stronger confinement
effect. A comparison of the two supported tungsten-based catalysts showed that
    W1@OMS possesses a higher MC-selectivity, while W2@OMS exhibits a higher Z-selectivity
which can be rationalized by the structures of the catalysts.

text: The Saharan desert ant Cataglyphis bombycina is densely covered with shiny
silver setae (hair-like structures). Their appearance was explained by geometric
optics and total internal reflection. The setae also increase the emissivity of
the ant, as they form an effective medium. This work provides additional data
on microstructural details of the setae that are used to simulate the scattering
of an individual seta to explain their influence on the optical properties. This
is achieved by characterization of their structure using light microscopy and
scanning/transmission electron microscopy. How the microstructural features influence
scattering is investigated wave-optically within the limits of finite-difference
time-domain simulations from the ultraviolet to the mid-infrared spectral range
to elucidate the optical effects beyond ray optics and effective medium theory.
The results show that Mie scattering plays an important role in protecting the
ant from solar radiation and could be relevant for its thermal tolerance.

text: 'We live in times of deep crisis. General crises of society often are accompanied
by ideological struggles. Given this context, it is important that social theory
reinvigorates the analysis of ideology. For doing so, it makes sense to engage
with classical theories of ideology. This paper contributes to this task. It asks:
How are the economic and the non-economic related? What is ideology? This article
deals with the base/superstructure problem and the problem of ideology via an
engagement with selected aspects of Stuart Hall’s, Georg Lukács’s and Raymond
Williams’s works. The commonality of Hall’s, Lukács’s and Williams’s thoughts
that makes a joint engagement with their works feasible is that they all three
dealt with aspects of culture from a critical theory perspective and are in one
way or another representatives of Cultural Marxism. While Lukács’s works and Cultural
Studies are often presented as conflicting approaches, this paper shows that concerning
the question of how the economic and the non-economic are related and how we can
think of ideology, the approaches of Lukács, Williams, and Hall complement each
other, which allows critical theories of culture to draw on all three approaches
and to combine elements from them in a synergistic manner. There are parallels
between Williams’, Hall’s, and Lukács’s solutions to the base/superstructure problem.
Williams argues that the economic exerts pressures on and sets limits to the non-economic.
Hall writes that the economic determines the non-economic in the first instance.
Lukács argues that the economic circumscribes subjectivity and the non-economic.'

  text:
Abstract
The ability of various policy activities
to reduce the reproduction rate of the COVID-19 disease is widely discussed. Using
a stringency index that comprises a variety of lockdown levels, such as school
and workplace closures, we analyze the effectiveness of government restrictions.
At the same time, we investigate the capacity of a range of lockdown measures
to lower the reproduction rate by considering vaccination rates and testing strategies.
By including all three components in an SIR (Susceptible, Infected, Recovery)
model, we show that a general and comprehensive test strategy is instrumental
in reducing the spread of COVID-19. The empirical study demonstrates that testing
and isolation represent a highly effective and preferable approach towards overcoming
the pandemic, in particular until vaccination rates have risen to the point of
    herd immunity.

  text: "
Abstract
Increasing average temperatures
and heat waves are having devasting impacts on human health and well-being but
studies of heat impacts and how people adapt are rare and often confined to specific
locations. In this study, we explore how analysis of conversations on social media
can be used to understand how people feel about heat waves and how they respond.
We collected global Twitter data over four months (from January to April 2022)
using predefined hashtags about heat waves. Topic modelling identified five topics.
The largest (one-third of all tweets) was related to sports events. The remaining
two-thirds could be allocated to four topics connected to communication about
climate-related heat or heat waves. Two of these were on the impacts of heat and
heat waves (health impacts 20%; social impacts 16%), one was on extreme weather
and climate change attribution (17%) and the last one was on perceptions and warning
(13%). The number of tweets in each week corresponded well with major heat wave
occurrences in Argentina, Australia, the USA and South Asia (India and Pakistan),
indicating that people posting tweets were aware of the threat from heat and its
impacts on the society. Among the words frequently used within the topic ‘Social
impacts’ were ‘air-conditioning’ and ‘electricity’, suggesting links between coping
strategies and financial pressure. Apart from analysing the content of tweets,
new insights were also obtained from analysing how people engaged with Twitter
tweets about heat or heat waves. We found that tweets posted early, and which
were then shared by other influential Twitter users, were among the most popular.
Finally, we found that the most popular tweets belonged to individual scientists
or respected news outlets, with no evidence that misinformation about climate
    change-related heat is widespread.\r\n
"
