text: Building and expanding on Bourdieu’s notions of cultural capital, habitus,
and field, this conceptual article aims to contribute to a better understanding
of intercultural transformations. Distancing itself from essentialist reductionism
in the analysis of cultures, it associates intercultural transformations with
habitus crises through “culture shock,” with the realization of intercultural
capital, and with changes in the scope and configuration of cultural pluriformity.
In going beyond Bourdieu without abandoning him along the way, the approach outlined
in the course of this article combines a range of conceptual tools which may prove
to be useful in sustaining struggles for social justice in educational institutions
    and in society at large.

  text: "
Abstract
\r\n
In line with
international developments in applied linguistics, school curricula in Germany
have begun to demand that Global Englishes be included in English Language Teaching.
However, the perspectives of German school students, the main addressees of such
a shift, are little explored. This article investigates the attitudes to and familiarity
with different Englishes among 160 German high school students, using a mix of
direct and indirect attitude elicitation methods and a nationality identification
task. Informants rated (speakers of) Standard Southern British (StSBrE), Standard
American (StAmE), Indian (IndE), German (GerE), and African/Kenyan English (AfrE/KenE).
Multivariate analyses revealed that informants are most familiar with StSBrE and
StAmE. StSBrE and, to a smaller degree, StAmE are perceived as reference norms,
while English as a Second Language (ESL) varieties, especially IndE are rated
negatively for competence, professionalism, and intelligibility. Familiarity with
specific English as a First/Native Language varieties is linked to more positive
attitudes. The observed congruence of directly and indirectly elicited attitudes
suggests that changes put forth in language curricula have not influenced language
    attitudes (yet).
"

text: Understanding a new literature corpus can be a grueling experience for junior
scholars. Nevertheless, corresponding guidelines have not been updated for decades.
We contend that the traditional strategy of skimming all papers and reading selected
papers afterwards needs to be revised. Therefore, we design a new strategy that
guides the overall exploratory process by prioritizing influential papers for
initial reading, followed by skimming the remaining papers. Consistent with schemata
theory, starting with in-depth reading allows readers to acquire more substantial
prior content schemata, which are representa-tive for the literature corpus and
useful in the following skimming process. To this end, we develop a prototype
that identifies the influential papers from a set of PDFs, which is illustrated
in a case study in the IT business value domain. With the new strategy, we envision
a more efficient process of exploring unknown literature corpora.

text: Timing plays a crucial role in the context of information security investments.
We regard timing in two dimensions, namely the time of announcement in relation
to the time of investment and the time of announcement in relation to the time
of a fundamental security incident. The financial value of information security
investments is assessed by examining the relationship between the investment announcements
and their stock market reaction focusing on the two time dimensions. Using an
event study methodology, we found that both dimensions influence the stock market
return of the investing organization. Our results indicate that (1) after fundamental
security incidents in a given industry, the stock price will react more positively
to a firm’s announcement of actual information security investments than to announcements
of the intention to invest; (2) the stock price will react more positively to
a firm’s announcements of the intention to invest after the fundamental security
incident compared to before; and (3) the stock price will react more positively
to a firm’s announcements of actual information security investments after the
fundamental security incident compared to before. Overall, the lowest abnormal
return can be expected when the intention to invest is announced before a fundamental
information security incident and the highest return when actual investing after
a fundamental information security incident in the respective industry.

  text:
Much work on innovation strategy assumes or theorizes that competition
in innovation elicits duplication of research and that disclosure decreases such
duplication. We validate this empirically using the American Inventors Protection
Act (AIPA), three complementary identification strategies, and a new measure of
blocked future patent applications. We show that AIPA—intended to reduce duplication,
through default disclosure of patent applications 18 months after filing—reduced
duplication in the U.S. and European patent systems. The blocking measure provides
a clear and micro measure of technological competition that can be aggregated
to facilitate the empirical investigation of innovation, firm strategy, and the
positive and negative externalities of patenting.
This paper

abstract:

text: 'Due to the present inflexibility and the lack of sufficient throttling capabilities
of lignite and nuclear power plants, a surplus of electricity generation occurs
during periods of high wind and solar power generation in the German electricity
grid. While the specific CO2-emission is decreasing then - due to the increased
share of Renewables, the grid frequency should be increasing (to a certain limit).
Using the grid frequency as an indicator to switch-on and -off certain loads (loads
that do not require power permanently (e.g. dishwashers, washing machines, dryers,
fridges and freezers, heaters) could provide a simple, inexpensive demand-side-management
indicator to lower specific CO2-emissions and costs (if a dynamic consumption
tariff is applied). To check the truthfulness of that hypothesis, the grid and
frequency data of the German grid of the year 2018 have been collected and the
correlations between grid frequency, share of renewables, CO2-contents, and actual
price at the European energy exchange (EEX) have been calculated. The results
show: Correlation between grid frequency and the share of renewables is quite
low (r=0.155) due to the fact that primary grid control quickly compensates deviations
from the 50 Hz nominal frequency. As expected, there is a good anti-correlation
(r=-0.687) between the EEX-prices and the share of renewables in the grid. Over
the years, correlation between electricity trading prices (EEX) and CO2 emissions
is quite good (r=0.665), within the one year (2018) that correlation almost doesn''t
exist, possibly due to the inflexibility of the bulky lignite baseload power plants
that even operate at negative prices.'

we prove that the multiplicity of the Pollicott-Ruelle resonance of the geodesic
flow on perpendicular one-forms at zero agrees with the first Betti number of
the manifold. Additionally, we prove that this equality is stable under small
perturbations of the Riemannian metric and simultaneous small perturbations of
the geodesic vector field within the class of contact vector fields. For more
general perturbations we get bounds on the multiplicity of the resonance zero
on all one-forms in terms of the first and zeroth Betti numbers. Furthermore,
we identify for hyperbolic manifolds further resonance spaces whose multiplicities
are given by higher Betti numbers.\r\n
"

text: The authors of Berg et al. [J. Algebra 348 (2011) 446–461] provide an algorithm
for finding a complete system of primitive orthogonal idempotents for CM, where
M is any finite R-trivial monoid. Their method relies on a technical result stating
that R-trivial monoid are equivalent to so-called weakly ordered monoids. We provide
an alternative algorithm, based only on the simple observation that an R-trivial
monoid may be realized by upper triangular matrices. This approach is inspired
by results in the field of coupled cell network dynamical systems, where L-trivial
monoids (the opposite notion) correspond to so-called feed-forward networks. We
first show that our algorithm works for ZM, after which we prove that it also
works for RM where R is an arbitrary ring with a known complete system of primitive
orthogonal idempotents. In particular, our algorithm works if R is any field.
In this respect our result constitutes a considerable generalization of the results
in Berg et al. [J. Algebra 348 (2011) 446–461]. Moreover, the system of idempotents
for RM is obtained from the one our algorithm yields for ZM in a straightforward
manner. In other words, for any finite R-trivial monoid M our algorithm only has
to be performed for ZM, after which a system of idempotents follows for any ring
with a given system of idempotents.

text: Dynamical systems often admit geometric properties that must be taken into
account when studying their behavior. We show that many such properties can be
encoded by means of quiver representations. These properties include classical
symmetry, hidden symmetry, and feedforward structure, as well as subnetwork and
quotient relations in network dynamical systems. A quiver equivariant dynamical
system consists of a collection of dynamical systems with maps between them that
send solutions to solutions. We prove that such quiver structures are preserved
under Lyapunov--Schmidt reduction, center manifold reduction, and normal form
    reduction.
