text:
Abstract
Initial value problems can be solved
efficiently by means of Runge–Kutta algorithms with adaptive step size control.
Diagonally implicit Runge–Kutta (DIRK) methods are the most popular class among
the diverse family of Runge–Kutta algorithms. In this paper, the novel class of
low‐order explicit last‐stage diagonally implicit Runge–Kutta (ELDIRK) methods
are explored, which combine implicit schemes with an additional explicit evaluation
as an explicit last stage. ELDIRK Butcher tableaus are used to control embedded
RK methods to obtain solutions of different orders. The lower‐order solution is
obtained by classical implicit RK stages and the higher‐order solution is obtained
by additional explicit evaluation. As a result, a significant reduction in computational
cost is achieved by skipping the iterative solution of nonlinear systems for the
additional step. The examination of the heat problem and the use of the innovative
Butcher tableau in the finite‐element method are the main contributions of this
work. Thus, it is possible to establish adaptive step size control for the new
low‐order embedded methods based on an empirical method for error estimation.
Two‐dimensional simulations are used to show an appropriate algorithm for the
ELDIRK schemes. The new Runge–Kutta schemes' predictions of higher‐order convergence
are confirmed, and their successful outcomes are illustrated.

text:
Quantum photonic processing via electro-optic components typically
requires electronic links across different operation environments, especially
when interfacing cryogenic components such as superconducting single photon detectors
with room-temperature control and readout electronics. However, readout and driving
electronics can introduce detrimental parasitic effects. Here we show an all-optical
control and readout of a superconducting nanowire single photon detector (SNSPD),
completely electrically decoupled from room temperature electronics. We provide
the operation power for the superconducting detector via a cryogenic photodiode,
and readout single photon detection signals via a cryogenic electro-optic modulator
in the same cryostat. This method opens the possibility for control and readout
of superconducting circuits, and feedforward for photonic quantum computing.

text:
The relationship between nonfinancial reporting and real sustainable
change within and beyond organizations is fraught with complication. Furthermore,
all facets of the relationship have not been examined equally. The contributions
of this special issue made substantive progress in this regard and draw our focus
to several remaining complications—in particular, the societal impacts of nonfinancial
reporting. With this introduction, we seek to move the conversation forward by
proposing a framework that disentangles the linkages between nonfinancial reporting
and real sustainable change at multiple levels of analysis. We highlight the distinction
between sustainability-related outputs and outcomes that typically materialize
at the firm level, and eventually lead to sustainable impact at the societal level.
Future research should advance this distinction and scrutinize the impact of real
sustainable change beyond firm-level outputs, study the organizational change
processes from antecedents to impacts, and examine the interrelationships between
different instruments to foster real sustainable change.

text:
The alignment of liquid crystals on surfaces plays a central role
in optimizing their performances. In this work, a cutting-edge nano-lithography-based
method to control the local orientation of a thermotropic liquid crystal is applied
to easily available commercial standard materials and evaluated. Parallel nanogrooves
on a substrate, created through 3D nanoprinting in a negative-tone photoresin
optimized for two-photon polymerization are used for this purpose. Azimuthal anchoring
energies of the order from 10−6 J/m2
to 10−5 J/m2 are found, depending on
the spacing, width and depth of the grooves. In part, these values are larger
than those reported previously for another photopolymer. Both uniform alignment
and spatial patterns of different alignment directions can be realized. Electro-optic
studies confirm the suitability of the method for electrically addressable photonic
applications and indicate strong polar anchoring.

\
Wearables serve to quantify the on-court activity in intermittent
sports such as field hockey (FH). Based on objective data, benchmarks can be determined
to tailor training intensity and volume. Next to average and accumulated values,
the most intense periods (MIPs) during competitive FH matches are of special interest,
since these quantify the peak intensities players experience throughout the intermittent
matches. The aim of this study was to retrospectively compare peak intensities
between training and competition sessions in a male FH team competing in the first
german division.
\r\n
\r\n
Methods
\r\n
\
Throughout an 8-week in-season period, 372 individual activity
datasets (144 datasets from competitive sessions) were recorded using the Polar
Team Pro sensor (Kempele, Finland). MIPs were calculated applying a rolling window
approach with predefined window length (1–5 min) and calculated for Total distance,
High-Intensity-Running distance (> 16 km/h), Sprinting distance (> 20 km/h)
and Acceleration load. Significant differences between training and competition
MIPs were analysed through non-parametric statistical tests (P < 0.05).
\r\n

\
Analyses revealed higher MIPs during competition for all
considered outcomes (P < 0.001). Effect size estimation
revealed strongest effects for sprinting distance (d = 1.89
to d = 1.22) and lowest effect sizes for acceleration
load (d = 0.92 to d = 0.49).
\r\n

\
The present findings demonstrate that peak intensities during
training do not reach those experienced during competitive sessions in a male
FH team. Training routines such as manipulations of court-dimensions and team
sizes might contribute to this discrepancy. Coaches should compare training and
competition intensities to recalibrate training routines to optimize athletes’
preparation for competition.
\r\n
"

text:
Abstract
The use of heterogeneous materials,
such as composites with Prandtl‐Reuss‐type material laws, has increased in industrial
praxis, making finite element modeling with homogenization techniques a well‐accepted
tool. These methods are particularly advantageous to account for microstructural
mechanisms which can be related to nonlinearities and time‐dependency due to elasto‐plasticity
behavior. However, their advantages are diminished by increasing computational
demand. The present contribution deals with the balance of accuracy and numerical
efficiency of nonlinear homogenization associated with a framework of goal‐oriented
adaptivity, which takes into account error accumulation over time. To this end,
model adaptivity of homogenization methods is coupled to mesh adaptivity on the
macro scale. Our new proposed adaptive procedure is driven by a goal‐oriented
a posteriori error estimator based on duality techniques using downwind and upwind
approximations. Due to nonlinearities and time‐dependency of the plasticity, the
estimation of error transport and error generation is obtained with a backward‐in‐time
dual method despite a high demand on memory capacity. In this contribution, the
dual problem is solved with a forward‐in‐time dual method that allows estimating
the full error during the resolution of the primal problem without the need for
extra memory capacity. Finally, a numerical example illustrates the effectiveness
of the proposed adaptive approach.

text:
Abstract
The constantly increasing challenges
of production technology for the economic and resource-saving production of metallic
workpieces require, among other things, the optimisation of existing processes.
Forming technology, which is confronted with new challenges regarding the quality
of the workpieces, must also organise the individual processes more efficiently
and at the same time more reliably in order to be able to guarantee good workpiece
quality and at the same time to be able to produce economically. One way to meet
these challenges is to carry out the forming processes in closed-loop control
systems using softsensors. Despite the many potential applications of softsensors
in the field of forming technology, there is still no definition of the term softsensor.
This publication therefore proposes a definition of the softsensor based on the
definition of a sensor and the distinction from the observer, which on the one
hand is intended to stimulate scientific discourse and on the other hand is also
intended to form the basis for further scientific work. Based on this definition,
a wide variety of highly topical application examples of various softsensors in
the field of forming technology are given.
