abstract:
- lang: eng
  text: '
The paper presents a cross-European survey on teachers and crowdsourcing.
The survey examines how familiar language teachers are with the concept of crowdsourcing
and addresses their attitude towards including crowdsourcing into language teaching
activities. The survey was administrated via an online questionnaire and collected
volunteers’ data on: (a) teachers’ experience with organizing crowdsourcing activities
for students/pupils, (b) the development of crowdsourced resources and materials
as well as (c) teachers’ motivation for participating in or employing crowdsourcing
activities. The questionnaire was disseminated in over 30 European countries.
The final sample comprises 1129 language teachers aged 20 to 65, mostly working
at institutions of tertiary education. The data indicates that many participants
are not familiar with the concept of crowdsourcing resulting in a low rate of
crowdsourcing activities in the classroom. However, a high percentage of responding
teachers is potentially willing to crowdsource teaching materials for the language(s)
they teach. They are particularly willing to collaborate with other teachers in
the creation of interactive digital learning materials, and to select, edit, and
share language examples for exercises or tests. Since the inclusion of crowdsourcing
activities in language teaching is still in its initial stage, steps for further
    research are highlighted.
'

text: Reactions to the pass of a basketball player performing a head fake are typically
slower than reactions to a basketball player who passes without a head fake (i.e.,
head-fake effect). The present study shows that extensive practice reduces the
head-fake effect in basketball. Additional analyses were conducted to explore
the mechanism behind the reduced head-fake effect. First, we analyzed whether
or not participants developed some control over the processing of irrelevant gaze
direction, as indicated by specific trial-to-trial adaptations (i.e., congruency
sequence effect). Second, we fitted the individual frequency distributions of
RTs to ex-Gaussian distributions, to evaluate if practice specifically affects
the Gaussian part of the distribution or the exponential part of the distribution.
Third, we modeled individual RT distributions as the so-called mixture effects
to examine whether the way irrelevant gaze direction impacts performance (either
occasionally but massively or continuously but moderately) changes with practice.
The analyses revealed that the effect of practice could not be explained with
an increasing congruency-sequence effect. Also, it could not be found in the ex-Gaussian
distributional analyses. The assumption that residual failure to inhibit the processing
of the gaze direction in contrast to continuous failures to do so might favor
mixed effects over uniform effects at later courses of practice could not be validated.
The reduced head-fake effect thus is argued to source in participants’ general
increasing ability to inhibit the processing of the task-irrelevant gaze direction
information and/or in a priority shift of gaze processing to a processing of the
    pass direction.

  text:
Abstract
We have collected data from a world-wide
survey among COP delegates to empirically investigate preferences for certain
burden sharing rules among key groups in a setting that reflects the possibility
of observing concessions from negotiating partners. In our survey, the participants
had the opportunity to select and combine up to eight (pre-defined) burden sharing
rules and to assign relative weights to the selected rules in their preferred
bundle. We examine whether such a mechanism helps to overcome the currently strictly
(self-interested) strategic claims on equity in the negotiation process. We observe
that delegates from different groups of countries show a general willingness for
concessions. However, the degree to which different burden sharing rules are taken
into consideration partly differs between countries. As a key insight we report
that the individual assessment of the polluter-pays rule based on current emissions
does not only stress the persistence of the traditional Annex-B/Non-Annex-B division
but also suggests tendencies for a more fragmented grouping with different positions
between, for example, delegates from developing countries (i.e. G77 members) and
emerging countries (i.e. BASIC). At the same time, we observe tendencies for a
more harmonized view among key groups towards the ability-to-pay rule in a setting
    of weighted burden sharing rules.

  text:
The characterisation of loss in optical waveguides is essential in
understanding the performance of these devices and their limitations. Whilst interferometric-based
methods generally provide the best results for low-loss waveguides, they are almost
exclusively used to provide characterization in cases where the waveguide is spatially
single-mode. Here, we introduce a Fabry-Pérot-based scheme to estimate the losses
of a nonlinear (birefringent or quasi-phase matched) waveguide at a wavelength
where it is multi-mode. The method involves measuring the generated second harmonic
power as the pump wavelength is scanned over the phase matching region. Furthermore,
it is shown that this method allows one to infer the losses of different second
harmonic spatial modes by scanning the pump field over the separated phase matching
spectra. By fitting the measured phase matching spectra from different titanium
indiffused lithium niobate waveguides to the model presented in this paper, it
is shown that one can estimate the second harmonic losses of a single spatial-mode,
at wavelengths where the waveguides are spatially multi-mode.

  text: "
Abstract
\r\n
The phenomenon
of entanglement is the basis of quantum information and quantum communication
processes. Entangled systems with a large number of photons are of great interest
at present because they provide a platform for streaming technologies based on
photonics. In this paper we present a device which operates with four-photons
and based on the Hong–Ou–Mandel interference. The presented device allows to maximize
the degree of spatial entanglement and generate the highly entangled four-dimensional
Bell states. Furthermore, the use of the interferometer in different regimes leads
to fast interference fringes in the coincidence probability with period of oscillations
twice smaller than the pump wavelength. We have a good agreement between theoretical
    simulations and experimental results.
"

  text:
We present a time-over-threshold readout technique to count the number
of activated pixels from an array of superconducting nanowire single photon detectors
(SNSPDs). This technique places no additional heatload on the cryostat, and retains
the intrinsic count rate of the time-tagger. We demonstrate proof-of-principle
operation with respect to a four-pixel device. Furthermore, we show that, given
some permissible error threshold, the number of pixels that can be reliably read
out scales linearly with the intrinsic signal-to-noise ratio of the individual
    pixel response.

  text:

text: In disaster operations management, a challenging task for rescue organizations
occurs when they have to assign and schedule their rescue units to emerging incidents
under time pressure in order to reduce the overall resulting harm. Of particular
importance in practical scenarios is the need to consider collaboration of rescue
units. This task has hardly been addressed in the literature. We contribute to
both modeling and solving this problem by (1) conceptualizing the situation as
a type of scheduling problem, (2) modeling it as a binary linear minimization
problem, (3) suggesting a branch-and-price algorithm, which can serve as both
an exact and heuristic solution procedure, and (4) conducting computational experiments
    - including a sensitivity analysis of the effects of exogenous model parameters
on execution times and objective value improvements over a heuristic suggested
in the literature - for different practical disaster scenarios. The results of
our computational experiments show that most problem instances of practically
feasible size can be solved to optimality within ten minutes. Furthermore, even
when our algorithm is terminated once the first feasible solution has been found,
this solution is in almost all cases competitive to the optimal solution and substantially
better than the solution obtained by the best known algorithm from the literature.
This performance of our branch-and-price algorithm enables rescue organizations
to apply our procedure in practice, even when the time for decision making is
limited to a few minutes. By addressing a very general type of scheduling problem,
our approach applies to various scheduling situations.

text: Scheduling problems are essential for decision making in many academic disciplines,
including operations management, computer science, and information systems. Since
many scheduling problems are NP-hard in the strong sense, there is only limited
research on exact algorithms and how their efficiency scales when implemented
on parallel computing architectures. We address this gap by (1) adapting an exact
branch-and-price algorithm to a parallel machine scheduling problem on unrelated
machines with sequence- and machine-dependent setup times, (2) parallelizing the
adapted algorithm by implementing a distributed-memory parallelization with a
master/worker approach, and (3) conducting extensive computational experiments
using up to 960 MPI processes on a modern high performance computing cluster.
With our experiments, we show that the efficiency of our parallelization approach
can lead to superlinear speedup but can vary substantially between instances.
We further show that the wall time of serial execution can be substantially reduced
through our parallelization, in some cases from 94 hours to less than six minutes
when our algorithm is executed on 960 processes.

text: Employing a sample of 492 merger and acquisition (M&A) announcements from
284 acquirers across North America and Europe between 2005 and 2018, this study
analyzes the impact of M&A announcements on an acquirers abnormal CDS spread changes.
We find that spreads from CDS which are written on acquirers increase by 310 bps
during a symmetric five-day event window suggesting that investors expect an increase
in the acquirers credit risk exposure due to M&As. Next to this baseline finding,
we conduct a large variety of sensitivity analyses to gain more insight into the
driving factors of the rising risk perception of CDS investors due to M&A announcements.
