  text: "
\r\n
Purpose
\r\n
Leveraging
social action theory, social network theory and the notion of network externality,
the purpose of this paper is to model two different return on investment (ROI)
measures: the networked ROI which captures the network effect originating from
a social media investment, and the discrete ROI which focuses social media discrete
    returns from individual users.
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n<jats:title
    content-type=\"abstract-subheading\">Design/methodology/approach
\r\n
A
field experiment was set up over a period of three months to test the effects
of two variants of an advertisement campaign (a social vs a discrete ad) on the
    modeled networked and discrete ROIs.
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n<jats:title
    content-type=\"abstract-subheading\">Findings
\r\n
The authors
find that emphasizing discrete user actions leads to lower network gains, but
higher monetary returns while the social action emphasis produces higher network
gains, but lower monetary returns. The study further suggests that social action
focus is preferable for brand promotion and engagement, whereas the discrete action
focus is suitable for boosting sales and website traffic.
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n<jats:title
    content-type=\"abstract-subheading\">Practical implications
\r\n
Several
potential implications for social media researchers and marketers are also discussed.
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n<jats:title
    content-type=\"abstract-subheading\">Originality/value
\r\n
The
authors for the first time showed that that the social media returns are derived
not only from individual actions taken by the user (e.g. likes and shares) but
also from users’ social interdependencies and the additional exposure that results
    from network effects.
\r\n
"

  text: <jats:p> Gift giving is an effective means to strengthen interpersonal relationships;
it also may initiate and enhance customer–brand relationships. Through a field
study conducted with an international monobrand retailer of beauty products, a
combination of propensity score matching with difference-in-differences estimations,
and two experimental scenario studies, this research demonstrates that gift buyers
spend 63% more in the year following a gift purchase than a matched sample of
customers who purchase for their personal use. Specifically, gift buyers increase
their purchase frequency (25%), spend more per shopping trip (41%), and engage
in more cross-buying (49%). The sales lift is particularly pronounced among new
customers. Identity theory suggests customer gratitude and public commitment as
mediating mechanisms. Gift purchase design characteristics (i.e., assistance during
gift purchase and branded gift wrapping) influence the strength of the mediating
    mechanisms.

  text:
The article analyzes how an emerging form of automation may drastically
transform contemporary employment dynamics. Recent breakthroughs in the field
of artificial intelligence (AI) make it possible to automate both manual and mental
non-standard tasks. The first part of the article traces the development of AI.
Whereas classical algorithms required the creation of a hermetic environment for
AI to thrive, modern neural network-based AI is capable of surviving in the chaotic
realm occupied by humans. Based on an analysis of changes in the nature of AI,
the authors distinguish between substitutive and supplemental automation. The
former refers to a complete replacement of humans by machines, while the latter
indicates a selective substitution of humans in specific professional functions.
In order to conceptualize professions as a nexus of automatable components, the
authors employ Goffman’s dramaturgical framework. Goffman studied the social visibility
of professional activity. Goffman held that any profession can be divided into
invisible routines that are fundamental to it and a dramatization that makes the
profession socially visible. The article demonstrates that the current utopian
and antiutopian views of automation both reduce work to its visible components
and neglect the logic of supplemental automation. The authors argue that the targets
of modern automation are not the socially visible components but the invisible
routines. In the final section, the authors develop a model that takes these invisible
professional routines into account and analyze what effect this new type of automation
may have on different types of professions with differing degrees of social visibility.
