text: The joining of dissimilar materials, such as steel and aluminum, entails significant
challenges during thermal curing processes due to differing coefficients of thermal
expansion. This study addresses the formation of “viscous fingering” instabilities
in structural adhesive joints, which are induced by thermally driven relative
displacements during the liquid phase of the adhesive. Using a component-like
specimen “bridge specimen,” the dependency of this phenomenon on process temperature
and structural stiffness (rivet distance) was characterized. Experimental results
reveal that while the relative displacement scales cubically with the free buckling
length, the resulting adhesive area reduction follows an exponential trend, leading
to a loss of effective bond area of up to 79%, which significantly compromises
the joint strength in automotive applications. To predict these process-induced
defects, a thermo-chemo-viscoelastic-viscoplastic adhesive model implemented in
LS-DYNA was applied. The model combines curing kinetics, viscoelastic relaxation,
and pressure-dependent plasticity and features a geometric damage parameter (D)
that captures the adhesive area reduction caused by viscous fingering as an exponential
function of the accumulated normal strain in the liquid phase. This damage parameter,
calibrated on base-specimen level, was transferred to the component geometry.
The simulation demonstrated high predictive accuracy with a maximum deviation
of the adhesive area reduction of 3.1% compared to experimental data. This validates
the model’s capability to predict manufacturing-induced damage in complex hybrid
structures solely based on thermal boundary conditions.

text: Information Systems (IS) is rooted in systems theory. Systems theory offers
powerful concepts to address challenges of growing system complexity and non-systemic
design approaches in information systems. Despite its systemic origins, systems
theory remains a peripheral topic in IS. The study addresses this gap by introducing
a comprehensive framework of 52 systems-theoretical concepts to guide the design
of complex IS artifacts. We synthesize scattered systems knowledge from diverse
disciplines to provide a unified level of abstraction for complex information
system design. We apply the framework to a use case of business reputation systems
to show how the systems lens informs the design of a novel, complex information
system. We make three key contributions to the literature. First, the framework
provides a common ground for interdisciplinary research in information system
design. Second, it offers a unified level of abstraction grounded in systems theory
that serves as a coherent basis for artifact design. Third, it demonstrates the
potential of systems theory as a foundational justificatory knowledge base. Furthermore,
we provide guidance on applying the framework across multiple modes of reasoning,
alongside further application guidelines. The study thus serves as a bridge between
the body of systems knowledge and contextual design in IS.

text: "Trust between client and consultant is perhaps the most important asset in
con-sulting, as this is a highly intangible knowledge-intensive business that
concerns is-sues of outstanding strategic and operational importance for the customers.
Cli-ents who have not worked with a particular consultancy face considerable risk
when they place an order while lacking reliable information about the service
quality they can expect. There is a strong link between trust and reputation,
as the positive reputation of a consultancy can act as a substitute for a new
client’s missing individual experience with the provider, fostering trust in the
service quali-ty. Thus, creating, maintaining, and demonstrating a good reputation
is of signifi-cant importance for consultancies in a very competitive industry.\r\nTo
facilitate trustworthy signals, we design and implement a novel reputation mechanism
that carries a monetary weight stored on a blockchain network as an immutable,
decentralized, and transparent ledger. Based on an implementation in the Ethereum
network and subsequent evaluation, we conclude that the reputation mechanism can
contribute to leveling information asymmetry and reducing risk while increasing
reputation and trust. The mechanism lends itself to being used in other business-to-business
scenarios that suffer from similar information asymmetries."

text: To reduce transport-related environmental impacts, innovative mobility system
approaches such as on-demand services are being developed. These can include operating
vehicles that differ regarding their characteristics and application profile from
privately owned cars in motorized individual transport. Studies on life cycle
assessment and life cycle engineering of vehicle lightweight structures are mainly
limited to these privately owned cars and the impact category of climate change.
In this paper, a method for life cycle assessment-based engineering of lightweight
structures in vehicles for various mobility system applications, including on-demand
mobility services, is developed. The method enables the holistic life cycle assessment
of lightweight structures in different mobility system applications considering
parameter changes at the upstream products, component, subsystem, vehicle and
mobility system levels, as well as the integration of results into engineering
activities. A case study is used to show that the vehicle and mobility system
application of lightweight structures can significantly influence their environmental
impacts and the selection of ecologically preferable product designs. The application
in vehicles for on-demand mobility services can lead to an increase in absolute
use stage energy demand and environmental impacts compared to applications in
privately owned vehicles for motorized individual transport. However, normalized
to the transport performance provided, the lifecycle environmental impacts of
structural components in vehicles for on-demand mobility services can be lower
than in vehicles for motorized individual transport. The paper contributes methodically
and with quantitative results to improved decision making in life cycle engineering
activities for lightweight structures in mobility system applications.

text: Verification and Validation (V&V) are essential processes in engineering Cyber-Physical
Systems. However, the role of V&V engineers is often not given sufficient attention.
Based on a systematic literature analysis and practical observations, a four-step
method for Test-oriented Resilient Requirements Engineering (ToRRE) is developed.
The steps are planning V&V, executing V&V activities, documenting V&V activities
and analyzing results of V&V activities. Applying ToRRE ensures continuous information
flow and traceability. Engineers are enabled to analyze requirements using engineering
artifacts connected through Model-Based Systems Engineering. Adopting methods
for Model-Based Effect Chain analysis to evaluated test cases and test scenarios,
conclusions on requirements engineering and change management are enabled. The
method is evaluated in an EU research project.

text: Reputation systems for companies to rate each other's performance are largely
unexplored in research and hardly available in practice. However, these systems
are relevant for prospective buyers to find a trustworthy seller. This observation
applies especially to short-lived business relationships where fulfilling the
performance promise is subject to a high degree of uncertainty. This paper explores
the value of a reputation system for a business-to-business (B2B) context and
focuses on three novel solutions for designing reputation systems. These solutions
include selling ratings, conducting ratings as payments, and employing a counter-rating
mechanism. We interview buyers to fathom the added value of these solutions in
different contexts. Our findings suggest that such a system is useful for companies
acting in less transparent markets and also helps when companies already have
a good market overview. Depending on the market conditions and business context,
the perceived value of the proposed system varies.

text: Developing Intelligent Technical Systems (ITS) involves a complex process
encompassing planning, analysis, design, production, and maintenance. Model-Based
Systems Engineering (MBSE) is a key methodology for systematic systems engineering.
Designing models for ITS requires harmonious interaction of various elements,
posing a challenge in MBSE. Leveraging Generative Artificial Intelligence, we
generated a dataset for modeling, using prompt engineering on large language models.
The generated artifacts can aid engineers in MBSE design or serve as synthetic
    training data for AI assistants.

text: The energy turnaround and the shift towards sustainable mobility threaten
the stability of European energy distribution grids due to substantially increasing
load fluctuations and power demand. These challenges can critically impact assets
in the distribution grid—e.g., switchgears—intensifying the need to plan, conduct,
and manage the maintenance of such assets. Predictive maintenance strategies that
analyze assets' current and historical condition data have been discussed as promising
approaches toward that end. However, the extant research focuses on designing
and improving analytical algorithms or information technology (IT) artifacts while
not considering how a maintenance service is cocreated by companies with IT. This
research article posits that IT and service must be aligned closely, presenting
an ensemble artifact comprising a digital industrial platform and a smart service
system for predictive maintenance on the distribution grid. The artifact is evaluated
by conducting a willingness-to-pay analysis with asset operators, documenting
their demand for condition monitoring and predictive maintenance as an integrated
solution, although they still struggle with even getting the condition data of
their assets. Building on these results, we formalize the knowledge in the form
of design principles and implications for managing the maintenance of critical
    assets in the distribution grid.

text: 'New technologies and materials carry significant potential for sustainable
production and use of products. As an example, Additive Manufacturing technologies
and materials promise lightweight design and energy efficient use of parts. Exhausting
the full potential requires: a) consideration of uncertainties with respect to
future capabilities, and b) upgradeable design guidelines to cover advancements
consistently. The proposed approach merges concepts of Design-for-X with foresight
algorithms of Scenario-Technique to derive actionable knowledge. It is validated
by an application in the field of Additive Manufacturing, namely Metal Fused Deposition
Modelling. Engineers benefit from the intuitive access to heterogeneous types
    of sustainability related information.'

text: Joint value creation of organizations in ecosystems have a high failure rate,
stressing the need for tools that enable the alignment of business models through
visual inquiry. However, existing visual inquiry tools rarely consider recent
design knowledge or ecosystem understanding. This leads to dissatisfied users
and impedes the full realization of ecosystems’ potential. This short paper proposes
an archaeological design science approach for enhancing the design of visual inquiry
tools (e.g., a canvas) for ecosystems. Preliminary findings reveal 24 relevant
artifacts, and shortcomings in the creation of conceptual models and rigorous
evaluations. The proposed research process aims to develop design principles for
more effective tools to bridge the gap between visual inquiry tools and ecosystems.
This research contributes to design science research by reutilizing design knowledge
and further developing the archaeological design approach. It also offers valuable
information to practitioners about existing business model tools for the creation
    of ecosystems.

text: Megatrends, such as digitization or sustainability, are confronting the product
management of manufacturing companies with a variety of challenges regarding the
design of future products, but also the management of the actual products. To
successfully position their products in the market, product managers need to gather
and analyze comprehensive information about customers, developments in the products’
environment, product usage, and more. The digitization of all aspects of life
is making data on these topics increasingly available – via social media, documents,
or the internet of things from the products themselves. The systematic collection
and analysis of these data enable the exploitation of new potentials for the adaption
of existing products and the creation of the products of tomorrow. However, there
are still no insights into the main concepts and cause-effect relationships in
exploiting data-driven approaches for product management. Therefore, this paper
aims to identify the main concepts and advantages of data-driven product management.
To answer the corresponding research questions a comprehensive systematic literature
review is conducted. From its results, a detailed description of the main concepts
of data-driven product management is derived. Furthermore, a taxonomy for the
advantages of data-driven product management is presented. The main concepts and
the taxonomy allow for a deeper understanding of the topic while highlighting
necessary future actions and research needs.

  text:
Abstract
To select design guidelines engineers
have to identify relevant from a bewildering amount of design guidelines. In this
paper, a rule-based method for selecting design guidelines for material circularity
selection is presented. For this purpose, a generic Product Life Cycle model is
detailed with regard to Multi Material cycles (gPLC-MM). The presented method
is divided into four steps. Core of the presented method is the comparison of
circular product strategies with product life phases and material recovery processes.
Engineering activities and increments of the product architecture are used to
identify design guidelines. The results show that through the material circularity-oriented
design guideline identification method, the product architecture is designed for
different processes and technologies, to recover materials. The method allows
engineers to select guidelines in a more targeted and consolidated way in sustainability-friendly
    product engineering.

  text: '
In virtual reality (VR), participants may not always have hands,
bodies, eyes, or even voices—using VR helmets and two controllers, participants
control an avatar through virtual worlds that do not necessarily obey familiar
laws of physics; moreover, the avatar’s bodily characteristics may not neatly
match our bodies in the physical world. Despite these limitations and specificities,
humans get things done through collaboration and the creative use of the environment.
While multiuser interactive VR is attracting greater numbers of participants,
there are currently few attempts to analyze the in situ interaction systematically.
This paper proposes a video-analytic detail-oriented methodological framework
for studying virtual reality interaction. Using multimodal conversation analysis,
the paper investigates a nonverbal, embodied, two-person interaction: two players
in a survival game strive to gesturally resolve a misunderstanding regarding an
in-game mechanic—however, both of their microphones are turned off for the duration
of play. The players’ inability to resort to complex language to resolve this
issue results in a dense sequence of back-and-forth activity involving gestures,
object manipulation, gaze, and body work. Most crucially, timing and modified
repetitions of previously produced actions turn out to be the key to overcome
both technical and communicative challenges. The paper analyzes these action sequences,
demonstrates how they generate intended outcomes, and proposes a vocabulary to
speak about these types of interaction more generally. The findings demonstrate
the viability of multimodal analysis of VR interaction, shed light on unique challenges
of analyzing interaction in virtual reality, and generate broader methodological
insights about the study of nonverbal action.
'

text: High streets across Europe continue to lose consumers to online retail, leading
to business closures and the decline of city centres, impairing cities’ overall
liveability. To counter this vicious cycle, our study presents smartmarket2, the
first instantiation of a digital actor engagement platform designed specifically
for high streets. smartmarket2 enables hybrid online-offline customer journeys
by connecting consumers to stores and other high street service providers. In
an action design research (ADR) project, we design, implement and evaluate smartmarket2,
involving 150 high street operators and 2,300 citizens in three cycles of building,
intervention and evaluation. We derive four design principles that contribute
prescriptive knowledge on the design of digital actor engagement platforms. Our
results reveal that such a platform is able to increase engagement, but that it
is subject to actors’ engagement dispositions.

  text:
Lightweight design is a common approach to reduce energy demand in
the use stage of vehicles. The production of lightweight materials is usually
associated with an increase in energy demand, so the environmental impacts of
lightweight structures need to be assessed holistically using a life cycle assessment.
To estimate the life cycle environmental impacts of a product in its developmental
stage, for example, by life cycle engineering, future changes in relevant influencing
factors must be considered. Prospective life cycle assessment provides methods
for integrating future scenarios into life cycle assessment studies. However,
approaches for integrating prospective life cycle assessment into product development
are limited. The objective of this work is to provide the methodological foundation
for integrating future scenarios of relevant influencing factors in the development
of lightweight structures. The applicability of the novel methodology is demonstrated
by a case study of a structural component in a steel, aluminium, and hybrid design.
The results show that appropriate decarbonisation measures can reduce the life
cycle greenhouse gas emissions by up to 95 percent until 2050. We also found that
shifts in the environmentally optimal design are possible in future scenarios.
Therefore, the methodology and data provided contribute to improved decision-making
    in product development.

  text:
Abstract. Due to an increasing volume of shipments, there is a significant
need for more delivery vehicles. One approach to reduce the associated increase
in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions is a new light weight design approach involving
the substitution of conventional materials with glass fiber mat-reinforced thermoplastics
(GMT) based on polypropylene (PP). The application of GMT by compression molding
is a widely used process in the automotive industry. However, application in the
commercial vehicle sector requires much larger dimensions, making it necessary
to clarify whether the manufacturing process and material are suitable for semi-structural
applications on this scale. To find this out, two replacement geometries are abstracted
in this study and manufactured by varying the main manufacturing parameters. The
feasibility can be demonstrated by recording and analyzing the resulting process
variables and measuring the formed fiber distribution. At the end of the paper,
recommendations are given for the production of GMT structures on the scale of
    commercial vehicles.

  text:
The development of automotive components with reduced greenhouse gas
(GHG) emissions is needed to reduce overall vehicle emissions. Life Cycle Engineering
(LCE) based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) supports this by providing holistic
information and improvement potentials regarding eco-efficient products. Key factors
influencing LCAs of automotive components, such as material production, will change
in the future. First approaches for integrating future scenarios for these key
factors into LCE already exist, but they only consider a limited number of parameters
and scenarios. This work aims to develop a method that can be practically applied
in the industry for integrating prospective LCAs (pLCA) into the LCE of automotive
components, considering relevant parameters and consistent scenarios. Therefore,
pLCA methods are further developed to investigate the influence of future scenarios
on the GHG emissions of automotive components. The practical application is demonstrated
for a vehicle component with different design options. This paper shows that different
development paths of the foreground and background system can shift the ecological
optimum of design alternatives. Therefore, future pathways of relevant parameters
must be considered comprehensively to reduce GHG emissions of future vehicles.
This work contributes to the methodological and practical integration of pLCA
into automotive development processes and provides quantitative results.

text: The global megatrends of digitization and sustainability lead to new challenges
for the design and management of technical products in industrial companies. Product
management - as the bridge between market and company - has the task to absorb
and combine the manifold requirements and make the right product-related decisions.
In the process, product management is confronted with heterogeneous information,
rapidly changing portfolio components, as well as increasing product, and organizational
complexity. Combining and utilizing data from different sources, e.g., product
usage data and social media data leads to promising potentials to improve the
quality of product-related decisions. In this paper, we reinforce the need for
data-driven product management as an interdisciplinary field of action. The state
of data-driven product management in practice was analyzed by conducting workshops
with six manufacturing companies and hosting a focus group meeting with experts
from different industries. We investigate the expectations and derive requirements
leading us to open research questions, a vision for data-driven product management,
and a research agenda to shape future research efforts.
