In this study, bioactive curcumin (CUM) derivatives were synthesized in a continuously operated microfluidic reactor (MFR), using piperidine-based polymeric networks as catalysts. Piperidine methacrylate and piperidine acrylate were synthesized and subsequently copolymerized with complementary monomers (MMA or DMAA) and crosslinkers (EGDMA or MBAM) via photopolymerization, yielding different polymeric networks. Initially, batch reactions were optimized for the organo-catalytic Knoevenagel condensation between CUM and 4-nitrobenzaldehyde, under various conditions, in the presence of polymer networks. Conversion was assessed using offline 1H NMR spectroscopy, revealing an increase in conversion with enhanced swelling properties of the polymer networks, which facilitated greater accessibility of catalytic sites. In continuous-flow MFR experiments, optimized polymer gel dots exhibited superior catalytic performance, achieving a conversion of up to 72%, compared to other compositions. This improvement was attributed to the enhanced swelling in the reaction mixture (DMSO/methanol, 7:3 v/v) at 40 °C over 72 h. Furthermore, the MFR system enabled the efficient synthesis of a series of CUM derivatives, demonstrating significantly higher conversion rates than traditional batch reactions. Notably, while batch reactions required 90% catalyst loading in the gel, the MFR system achieved a comparable or superior performance with only 50% catalyst, resulting in a higher turnover number. These findings underscore the advantages of continuous-flow organo-catalysis in enhancing catalytic efficiency and sustainability in organic synthesis.
","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Gels","issue":"4","doi":"10.3390/gels11040278","article_number":"278","main_file_link":[{"url":"https://www.mdpi.com/2310-2861/11/4/278"}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"publication_status":"published","date_updated":"2025-04-11T07:13:26Z","intvolume":" 11","year":"2025","title":"Synthesis of Curcumin Derivatives via Knoevenagel Reaction Within a Continuously Driven Microfluidic Reactor Using Polymeric Networks Containing Piperidine as a Catalyst","publication_identifier":{"issn":["2310-2861"]},"author":[{"first_name":"Naresh","last_name":"Killi","full_name":"Killi, Naresh"},{"full_name":"Rumpke, Katja","first_name":"Katja","last_name":"Rumpke"},{"id":"287","full_name":"Kuckling, Dirk","first_name":"Dirk","last_name":"Kuckling"}],"citation":{"mla":"Killi, Naresh, et al. “Synthesis of Curcumin Derivatives via Knoevenagel Reaction Within a Continuously Driven Microfluidic Reactor Using Polymeric Networks Containing Piperidine as a Catalyst.” Gels, vol. 11, no. 4, 278, MDPI AG, 2025, doi:10.3390/gels11040278.","bibtex":"@article{Killi_Rumpke_Kuckling_2025, title={Synthesis of Curcumin Derivatives via Knoevenagel Reaction Within a Continuously Driven Microfluidic Reactor Using Polymeric Networks Containing Piperidine as a Catalyst}, volume={11}, DOI={10.3390/gels11040278}, number={4278}, journal={Gels}, publisher={MDPI AG}, author={Killi, Naresh and Rumpke, Katja and Kuckling, Dirk}, year={2025} }","ama":"Killi N, Rumpke K, Kuckling D. Several diagnostics were employed to characterize the spray and nanoparticles. \r\nIncreasing DG flow (6 - 12 slm) results in smaller droplet sizes (DS), cooler flame temperatures, shorter high-temperature droplet/particle residence times, and smaller agglomerates in the size range of 5 - 12 nm with narrower primary particle size distribution, corresponding to higher mass fractal dimensions, as supported by TEM and SMPS analysis, resulting in more compact agglomerates. BET and TEM confirmed decreasing primary particle sizes with increasing DG flow. Raman and XRD analyses predominantly identified maghemite, which shows a bimodal distribution of crystallite sizes, while SS1 samples have a greater proportion of larger crystallites.\r\nThe self-preserving size distributions of agglomerates with a geometric standard deviation of 1.5 are reached faster with increasing DG flow. The barrier effect of DG observed in SS1 leads to slower droplet combustion kinetics, higher temperatures, and delayed precursor release, which, along with downstream flow recirculation, result in significantly higher agglomeration rates outside the visible flame. SS2 demonstrates improved atomization, more stable flames, and finer, uniform nanoparticles with less carbonaceous residues (CR). Conversely, SS1 showed broader DS distributions and higher CR levels on the γ-Fe2O3 surface, especially at higher DG flow.\r\nThis work highlights the essential role of DG flow and nozzle geometry in controlling droplet evaporation, flame stability, and nanoparticle growth, offering insights for optimizing SFS and validating numerical models.\r\n","lang":"eng"}],"date_created":"2026-02-02T11:41:04Z","type":"journal_article","keyword":["Spray flame synthesis","iron oxide nanoparticle","SpraySyn burner","Dispersion gas","Coaxial atomization","HiaT-SMPS"]},{"citation":{"mla":"Alt, Christoph, et al. “Evaluating OneAPI I/O Pipes in a Case Study of Scaling a SYCL Jacobi Solver to Multiple FPGAs.” Proceedings of the 13th International Workshop on OpenCL and SYCL, Association for Computing Machinery, 2025, doi:10.1145/3731125.3731131.","bibtex":"@inproceedings{Alt_Plessl_Kenter_2025, place={New York, NY, USA}, series={IWOCL ’25}, title={Evaluating oneAPI I/O Pipes in a Case Study of Scaling a SYCL Jacobi Solver to multiple FPGAs}, DOI={10.1145/3731125.3731131}, booktitle={Proceedings of the 13th International Workshop on OpenCL and SYCL}, publisher={Association for Computing Machinery}, author={Alt, Christoph and Plessl, Christian and Kenter, Tobias}, year={2025}, collection={IWOCL ’25} }","ama":"Alt C, Plessl C, Kenter T. Thus, in 2019, the so-called SpraySyn1 burner was introduced (SS1), which was subsequently characterized in numerical and experimental studies. Based on this research, a modification of the nozzle design was proposed, which has now been considered in the successor model, SpraySyn2 (SS2). As little is known about the effect of the nozzle adaptation on the particle formation, we operated both burners under identical operating conditions to produce maghemite. The final powder comparison showed that SS2 yielded considerable higher specific surface areas (associated with smaller primary particle sizes), lower polydispersity, and higher phase purity. To obtain further information on the size distributions of aggregates and agglomerates generated by SS2, aerosol samples were extracted by hole in a tube (HIAT) sampling and characterized by scanning mobility particle sizing (SMPS). Samples were extracted along the centerline at different heights above the burner (HAB) above the visible flame tip (>7 cm), and quenching experiments were performed to extract the aerosol samples at different dilution rates. Thereby, it was demonstrated that performing detailed quenching experiments is crucial for obtaining representative HIAT-SMPS data. In particular, agglomerates/aggregate sizes were overestimated by up to ~70 % if samples were not sufficiently diluted. If sufficient dilution was applied, distribution widths and mean particle mobility diameters were determined with high accuracy (sample standard derivation <5 %). Our data suggested the evolution of primary particle sizes was mostly completed <7 cm HAB and it was shown aggregates/agglomerates present above the visible flame were compact in structure (non- fractal). The mean diameter of the particle ensemble grew along the centerline from 6.9 nm (7 cm) to 11.4 nm (15 cm), while distribution widths grew from 1.42 to 1.52."}],"main_file_link":[{"url":"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2666352X23001243?ref=cra_js_challenge&fr=RR-1"}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"doi":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jaecs.2023.100235","title":"Maghemite nanoparticles synthesis via spray flame synthesis and particle characterization by hole in a tube sampling and scanning mobility particle sizing (HIAT-SMPS)","year":"2024","date_updated":"2024-02-05T12:25:00Z","publication_status":"published"},{"title":"Large eddy simulation of iron oxide formation in a laboratory spray flame","year":"2023","publication_status":"published","date_updated":"2024-02-05T12:38:43Z","main_file_link":[{"url":"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2666352X23000808"}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"doi":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jaecs.2023.100191","publication":"Applications in Energy and Combustion Science","abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"Iron oxide nanoparticles are very interesting for many applications in different industrial sectors. A key factor for the further establishment of LS is the expansion of the material portfolio with, for example, refreshable and halogen-free flame-retardant (FR) powder materials. Accordingly, various halogen-free FRs are investigated in this work and evaluated with respect to their use in LS. First, their decomposition behavior and mode of action are examined. Subsequently, the additives are dry blended with PA12 to investigate properties relevant for LS, such as particle morphology, thermal behavior and melt viscosity. Afterwards, test specimens for UL94 vertical flame-retardancy tests are produced by processing the dry blends on an EOS P3 LS system. Finally, the process stability of the process-aged powder blends is investigated by again examining the thermal behavior and melt viscosity.","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Proceedings of the 34th Annual International Solid Freeform Fabrication Symposium","doi":"https://doi.org/10.26153/tsw/50926","main_file_link":[{"url":"https://www.sffsymposium.org/","open_access":"1"}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"publication_status":"published","date_updated":"2024-04-02T12:43:51Z","title":"Halogen-Free Flame Retardant Powder Materials for Laser Sintering: Evaluation and Process Stability Analysis","year":"2023","author":[{"id":"72307","last_name":"Neitzel","orcid":"0009-0004-8412-3645 ","first_name":"Fabian","full_name":"Neitzel, Fabian"},{"last_name":"Kletetzka","first_name":"Ivo","full_name":"Kletetzka, Ivo","id":"50769"},{"id":"464","last_name":"Schmid","orcid":"000-0001-8590-1921","first_name":"Hans-Joachim","full_name":"Schmid, Hans-Joachim"}]},{"publication":"Applications in Energy and Combustion Science","date_created":"2023-08-22T13:26:37Z","type":"journal_article","keyword":["Nanoparticle synthesis","Flame spray pyrolysis","SpraySyn burner","Flame structure","Species distribution","Temperature distribution"],"department":[{"_id":"43"}],"year":"2023","title":"Thermal and chemical structure of ethanol and 2-ethylhexanoic acid/ethanol SpraySyn flames","author":[{"last_name":"Gonchikzhapov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7773-047X","first_name":"Munko","full_name":"Gonchikzhapov, Munko","id":"94996"},{"id":"94562","last_name":"Kasper","first_name":"Tina","orcid":"0000-0003-3993-5316 ","full_name":"Kasper, Tina"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["2666-352X"]},"date_updated":"2023-08-24T08:55:26Z","publication_status":"published","intvolume":" 15","main_file_link":[{"url":"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2666352X23000638","open_access":"1"}],"article_number":"100174","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"doi":"10.1016/j.jaecs.2023.100174","citation":{"bibtex":"@article{Gonchikzhapov_Kasper_2023, title={Thermal and chemical structure of ethanol and 2-ethylhexanoic acid/ethanol SpraySyn flames}, volume={15}, DOI={10.1016/j.jaecs.2023.100174}, number={100174}, journal={Applications in Energy and Combustion Science}, publisher={Elsevier BV}, author={Gonchikzhapov, Munko and Kasper, Tina}, year={2023} }","ama":"Gonchikzhapov M, Kasper T. Automated approximate accelerator synthesis involves a great deal of complexity on the size of design space which exponentially grows with the number of possible approximations. Design space exploration of approximate accelerator synthesis is usually targeted via heuristic-based search methods. The majority of existing frameworks prune a large part of the design space using a greedy-based approach to keep the problem tractable. Therefore, they result in inferior solutions since many potential solutions are neglected in the pruning process without the possibility of backtracking of removed approximate instances. In this paper, we address the aforementioned issue by adopting Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS), as an efficient stochastic learning-based search algorithm, in the context of automated synthesis of approximate accelerators. This enables the synthesis frameworks to deeply subsamples the design space of approximate accelerator synthesis toward most promising approximate instances based on the required performance goals, i.e., power consumption, area, or/and delay. We investigated the challenges of providing an efficient open-source framework that benefits analytical and search-based approximation techniques simultaneously to both speed up the synthesis runtime and improve the quality of obtained results. Besides, we studied the utilization of machine learning algorithms to improve the performance of several critical steps, i.e., accelerator quality testing, in the synthesis framework. The proposed framework can help the community to rapidly generate efficient approximate accelerators in a reasonable runtime.","lang":"eng"}],"citation":{"apa":"Awais, M., & Platzner, M. (2021). IP core vendors who wish to create such circuits need to convince consumers of the resulting approximation quality. As a solution we propose proof-carrying approximate circuits: The vendor creates an approximate IP core together with a certificate that proves the approximation quality. The proof certificate is bundled with the approximate IP core and sent off to the consumer. The consumer can formally verify the approximation quality of the IP core at a fraction of the typical computational cost for formal verification. In this paper, we first make the case for proof-carrying approximate circuits and then demonstrate the feasibility of the approach by a set of synthesis experiments using an exemplary approximation framework."}],"publication":"IEEE Transactions On Very Large Scale Integration Systems","issue":"9","keyword":["Approximate circuit synthesis","approximate computing","error metrics","formal verification","proof-carrying hardware"],"type":"journal_article","department":[{"_id":"78"}],"date_created":"2020-07-06T11:21:30Z"},{"status":"public","user_id":"15278","_id":"21632","quality_controlled":"1","project":[{"_id":"52","name":"Computing Resources Provided by the Paderborn Center for Parallel Computing"}],"citation":{"ieee":"M. There is, however, no high-level benchmark suite available, which specifically enables a comparison of FPGA architectures, programming tools, and libraries for HPC applications. To fill this gap, we have developed an OpenCL-based open-source implementation of the HPCC benchmark suite for Xilinx and Intel FPGAs. This benchmark can serve to analyze the current capabilities of FPGA devices, cards, and development tool flows, track progress over time, and point out specific difficulties for FPGA acceleration in the HPC domain. Additionally, the benchmark documents proven performance optimization patterns. We will continue optimizing and porting the benchmark for new generations of FPGAs and design tools and encourage active participation to create a valuable tool for the community. A well-defined manipulation of atomization may be achieved by variation of nozzle geometry, injection parameter or fluid properties. However, change of fluid properties, e.g. varying solvents or increasing the precursor concentration, also influences the final particle properties. In this work, the influence of precursor concentration on fluid properties, spray and particle formation in Flame Spray Pyrolysis is experimentally investigated. High-speed shadowgraphy and Phase-Doppler measurements are conducted in a semi-closed combustion chamber with a well-defined burner geometry (SpraySyn burner) that is based on a coaxial atomization principle. By adding precursor to the flammable solvent, resulting spray characteristics, flame shape and appearance are changed in color, shape and mean droplet size distribution. Compared to resulting mean droplet sizes of pure solvent mixtures (D32, 22 μm), mean droplet sizes in the center of the precursor flame at 30 mm above the burner are generally smaller (D32, 18 μm). Persisting high share of small droplets in the droplet size distribution are presented, that presumably origin from an accumulation of metal organic precursor at the droplet surface during combustion, that acts as a diffusive barrier for high volatility solvent and thus reduces droplet evaporation. Sufficiently high above the nozzle exit, increasing the precursor concentration does not affect the radial distribution of mean droplet sizes but leads to increased mean particle sizes. More precursor presumably leads to higher concentrations of prime particles in the flame, thus probability of particle collusion and agglomeration. High-speed imaging at nozzle exit revealed random fluctuations of initial jet diameter, paired with jet axis shifting around 1000 Hz. These superposed fluctuations determine the initial conditions for atomization, induce pulsations in the flame and thus initiate the entire chain of the particle synthesis process."}],"publisher":"ILASS (European Conference on Liquid Atomization and Spray Systems)","_id":"24502","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"ddc":["620"],"user_id":"67002","conference":{"location":"Paris","name":"ILASS (European Conference on Liquid Atomization and Spray Systems)","start_date":"2019-09-02","end_date":"2019-09-04"},"author":[{"full_name":"Bieber, M.","first_name":"M.","last_name":"Bieber"},{"full_name":"Tischendorf, R.","last_name":"Tischendorf","first_name":"R."},{"first_name":"M.","last_name":"Reddemann","full_name":"Reddemann, M."},{"full_name":"Schmid, H.-J.","first_name":"H.-J.","last_name":"Schmid"},{"last_name":"Kneer","first_name":"R.","full_name":"Kneer, R."}],"year":"2019","title":"Influence of precursor concentration on spray and particle formation in flame spray pyrolysis","status":"public","has_accepted_license":"1","date_updated":"2022-01-06T06:56:26Z","publication_status":"published"},{"project":[{"name":"Computing Resources Provided by the Paderborn Center for Parallel Computing","_id":"52"}],"file_date_updated":"2020-04-25T08:00:35Z","citation":{"mla":"Witschen, Linus Matthias, et al. “Jump Search: A Fast Technique for the Synthesis of Approximate Circuits.” Fourth Workshop on Approximate Computing (AxC 2019).","apa":"Witschen, L. Automated synthesis of approximate\r\ncircuits is performed via functional approximation, in which various\r\nparts of the target circuit are extensively examined with a library\r\nof approximate components/transformations to trade off the functional\r\naccuracy and computational budget (i.e., power). However, as the number\r\nof possible approximate transformations increases, traditional search\r\ntechniques suffer from a combinatorial explosion due to the large\r\nbranching factor. In this work, we present a comprehensive framework\r\nfor automated synthesis of approximate circuits from either structural\r\nor behavioral descriptions. We adapt the Monte Carlo Tree Search\r\n(MCTS), as a stochastic search technique, to deal with the large design\r\nspace exploration, which enables a broader range of potential possible\r\napproximations through lightweight random simulations. The proposed\r\nframework is able to recognize the design Pareto set even with low\r\ncomputational budgets. Experimental results highlight the capabilities of\r\nthe proposed synthesis framework by resulting in up to 61.69% energy\r\nsaving while maintaining the predefined quality constraints."}],"date_created":"2019-07-10T09:21:38Z","type":"conference","keyword":["Approximate computing","High-level synthesis","Accuracy","Monte-Carlo tree search","Circuit simulation"],"department":[{"_id":"78"}],"year":"2018","title":"An MCTS-based Framework for Synthesis of Approximate Circuits","status":"public","author":[{"id":"64665","last_name":"Awais","first_name":"Muhammad","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4148-2969","full_name":"Awais, Muhammad"},{"first_name":"Hassan","last_name":"Ghasemzadeh Mohammadi","full_name":"Ghasemzadeh Mohammadi, Hassan","id":"61186"},{"full_name":"Platzner, Marco","last_name":"Platzner","first_name":"Marco","id":"398"}],"date_updated":"2022-01-06T06:50:46Z","page":"219-224","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"_id":"10598","user_id":"64665","doi":"10.1109/VLSI-SoC.2018.8645026"},{"type":"journal_article","keyword":["Aluminophosphates","Ionic liquids","Ionothermal synthesis","Microporous materials","Zeolite analogous"],"date_created":"2026-02-07T08:58:23Z","abstract":[{"text":"In a systematic study on the synthesis of aluminophosphates (AlPOs) under ionothermal conditions, initially using 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([C4mim]Br) as ionic liquid solvent and structure-directing agent, the effect of the reaction conditions (i.e. molar P/Al, F/Al and ionic liquid/Al ratios, alternative fluoride sources, influence of the ionic liquid’s cation or anion, temperature, reaction time) on the framework type was studied in detail. In [C4mim]Br, the formation of the more thermodynamically stable AEL framework type proceeds via AFI. The framework type can be changed by choosing another anion or cation of the ionic liquid. Hence, the successful ionothermal synthesis of the AFI framework AlPO is reported by using either N-ethylpyridinium bromide ([C2py]Br) or 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([C4mim]Cl). The mineraliser [Me4N]F, rather than HF, has been used for the first time as an alternative fluoride source in ionothermal synthesis, which can also affect the framework type. Hence, a very efficient synthesis of the LTA framework type is reported in [C4mim]Br using [Me4N]F. Ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) studies showed that the anion bridges between the aluminium atoms of the framework and the cation. The interaction is more favoured in the presence of the bromide than the chloride, which may be a clue to the question why the AEL framework is not formed in the chloride-based ionic liquid. This study opens several routes to pursue in the future as numerous ionic liquids are available which can be used in ionothermal synthesis.","lang":"eng"}],"extern":"1","publication":"Microporous and Mesoporous Materials","citation":{"ama":"Azim MM, Pensado A, Kirchner B, et al.
