  abstract     = {{Application of prognostics and health management (PHM) in the field of Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cells is emerging as an important tool in increasing the reliability and availability of these systems. Though a lot of work is currently being conducted to develop PHM systems for fuel cells, various challenges have been encountered including the self-healing effect after characterization as well as accelerated degradation due to dynamic loading, all which make RUL predictions a difficult task. In this study, a prognostic approach based on adaptive particle filter algorithm is proposed. The novelty of the proposed method lies in the introduction of a self-healing factor after each characterization and the adaption of the degradation model parameters to fit to the changing degradation trend. An ensemble of five different state models based on weighted mean is then developed. The results show that the method is effective in estimating the remaining useful life of PEM fuel cells, with majority of the predictions falling within 5\% error. The method was employed in the IEEE 2014 PHM Data Challenge and led to our team emerging the winner of the RUL category of the challenge.}},

  abstract     = {{In this paper we present a speech presence probability (SPP) estimation algorithmwhich exploits both temporal and spectral correlations of speech. To this end, the SPP estimation is formulated as the posterior probability estimation of the states of a two-dimensional (2D) Hidden Markov Model (HMM). We derive an iterative algorithm to decode the 2D-HMM which is based on the turbo principle. The experimental results show that indeed the SPP estimates improve from iteration to iteration, and further clearly outperform another state-of-the-art SPP estimation algorithm.}},

By advancing a cross-sectional projection method developed by prior research and using firm-specific information in financial statements and business plans, we derive benchmarks for management revenue forecasts. With these benchmarks, we estimate forecast errors as an a priori measure of biased expectations. Using this measure for our proprietary dataset on venture-backed start-ups in Germany, we find evidence of substantial upward forecast biases. We uncover that firms with large forecast errors fail significantly more often than do less biased entrepreneurs in years following the investment. Overall, our results highlight the implications of excessive optimism and overconfidence in entrepreneurial environments and emphasize the relevance of accounting information and business plans for venture capital investment decisions.}},

  abstract     = {{Piezoelectric inertia motors use the inertia of a body to drive it by means of a friction contact in a series of small steps. These motors can operate in ``stick-slip'' or ``slip-slip'' mode, with the fundamental frequency of the driving signal ranging from several Hertz to more than 100 kHz. To predict the motor characteristics, a Coulomb friction model is sufficient in many cases, but numerical simulation requires microscopic time steps. This contribution proposes a much faster simulation technique using one evaluation per period of the excitation signal. The proposed technique produces results very close to those of timestep simulation for ultrasonics inertia motors and allows direct determination of the steady-state velocity of an inertia motor from the motion profile of the driving part. Thus it is a useful simulation technique which can be applied in both analysis and design of inertia motors, especially for parameter studies and optimisation.}},

  abstract     = {{Employing time series of single-name CDS market spreads from 29 European banks located in the EU-12 plus Switzerland and the UK over the period from January 2004 through September 2010 this paper analyses the relationship between increasing sovereign risk and bank-specific CDS pricing. Results from calculating relative CDS spread deviations (model minus market spreads) initially reveal a price bubble in the European CDS market until the beginning of the financial crisis in mid-2007. From this point in time the gap narrows remarkably during the financial crisis and sovereign debt crisis period. Corresponding to these findings, the empirical analysis reveals a negative impact of sovereign risk on calculated CDS spread differentials indicating a spill-over effect between sovereign risk and bank risk and hence, a positive effect on bank-specific CDS pricing. Further analyses reveal that the perception of sovereign risk is not crisis- but country-dependent suggesting that bank-specific CDS market spreads may already include a premium to cover sovereign risk from PIIGS countries during the pre-crisis period in Europe. }},

  abstract     = {{This paper proposes a quality driven, simulation based approach to functional design verification, which applies mainly to IP-level HDL designs with well specified test instruction format and is evaluated on a soft microprocessor core MB-LITE [5]. The approach utilizes mutation analysis as the quality metric to steer an automated simulation data generation process. It leads to a simulation flow with two phases towards an enhanced mutation analysis result. First in a random simulation phase, an in-loop heuristics is deployed and adjusts dynamically the test probability distribution so as to improve the coverage efficiency. Next, for each remaining hard-to-kill mutant, a search heuristics on test input space is developed to iteratively locate a target test, using a specific objective cost function for the goal of killing HDL mutant. The effectiveness of this integrated two-phase simulation flow is demonstrated by the results with the MB-LITE microprocessor IP.}},

  abstract     = {{Attended stimuli are perceived as occurring earlier than unattended stimuli. This phenomenon of prior entry is usually identified by a shift in the point of subjective simultaneity (PSS) in temporal order judgements (TOJs). According to its traditional psychophysical interpretation, the PSS coincides with the perception of simultaneity. This assumption is, however, questionable. Technically, the PSS represents the temporal interval between two stimuli at which the two alternative TOJs are equally likely. Thus it also seems possible that observers perceive not simultaneity, but uncertainty of temporal order. This possibility is supported by prior-entry studies, which find that perception of simultaneity is not very likely at the PSS. The present study tested the percept at the PSS in prior entry, using peripheral cues to orient attention. We found that manipulating attention caused varying temporal perceptions around the PSS.   abstract     = {{HDL-mutation based fault injection and analysis is considered as an important coverage metric for measuring the quality of design simulation processes [20, 3, 1, 2]. In this work, we try to solve the problem of automatic simulation data generation targeting HDL mutation faults. We follow a search based approach and eliminate the need for symbolic execution and mathematical constraint solving from existing work. An objective cost function is defined on the test input space and serves the guidance of search for fault-detecting test data. This is done by first mapping the simulation traces under a test onto a control and data flow graph structure which is extracted from the design. Then the progress of fault detection can be measured quantitatively on this graph to be the cost value. By minimizing this cost we approach the target test data. The effectiveness of the cost function is investigated under an example neighborhood search scheme. Case study with a floating point arithmetic IP design has shown that the cost function is able to guide effectively the search procedure towards a fault-detecting test. The cost calculation time as the search overhead was also observed to be minor compared to the actual design simulation time.}},

Theeuwes summarizes an impressive number of studies demonstrating interference by irrelevant visual singletons in computer experiments with humans. Theeuwes assumes that this salience-driven capture of attention is fast and occurs within 150 ms since singleton onset, during the feed-forward phase of visual processing. In contrast to Theeuwes, we think that top–down contingent capture is the rule and explains initial and fast attention capture effects in the first feed-forward phase of visual processing. During a later phase and under some conditions exogenous capture of attention possibly follows. At the same time, we propose that the evidence presented by Theeuwes fails to support exogenous orienting because it fails to exclude a top–down contingent capture explanation.   abstract     = {{In automatic speech recognition, hidden Markov models (HMMs) are commonly used for speech decoding, while switching linear dynamic models (SLDMs) can be employed for a preceding model-based speech feature enhancement. In this paper, these model types are combined in order to obtain a novel iterative speech feature enhancement and recognition architecture. It is shown that speech feature enhancement with SLDMs can be improved by feeding back information from the HMM to the enhancement stage. Two different feedback structures are derived. In the first, the posteriors of the HMM states are used to control the model probabilities of the SLDMs, while in the second they are employed to directly influence the estimate of the speech feature distribution. Both approaches lead to improvements in recognition accuracy both on the AURORA2 and AURORA4 databases compared to non-iterative speech feature enhancement with SLDMs. It is also shown that a combination with uncertainty decoding further enhances performance.}},

Abstract RTOS simulations and timing analysis applies for fast and early estimation to configure it towards the individual needs of the application and environment. In this context, a high accuracy of the simulation compared to an instruction set simulation (ISS) is of key importance. In this paper, we investigate the accuracy of abstract RTOS simulation and compare it to ISS and the behavior of the physical system. We show that we can reach an increased accuracy of the simulation when we inject noise into the time model. Our results indicate that it is sufficient to inject uniformly distributed random time values to the RTOS real-time clock.}},

  abstract     = {{In this paper, we derive an uncertainty decoding rule for automatic speech recognition (ASR), which accounts for both corrupted observations and inter-frame correlation. The conditional independence assumption, prevalent in hidden Markov model-based ASR, is relaxed to obtain a clean speech posterior that is conditioned on the complete observed feature vector sequence. This is a more informative posterior than one conditioned only on the current observation. The novel decoding is used to obtain a transmission-error robust remote ASR system, where the speech capturing unit is connected to the decoder via an error-prone communication network. We show how the clean speech posterior can be computed for communication links being characterized by either bit errors or packet loss. Recognition results are presented for both distributed and network speech recognition, where in the latter case common voice-over-IP codecs are employed.}},

  abstract     = {{In this paper, we experimentally evaluate algorithms for velocity estimation of a GSM 900 mobile terminal which are based on the analysis of the statistical properties of the fast fading process. It is shown how theses statistics can be obtained from the training sequences present in downlink transmission bursts without establishing an active connection. Realistic simulations of a GSM channel according to the COST 207 channel models have been conducted. These models incorporate effects like multipath propagation, fading, cochannel interference and additive noise. It is shown that velocity estimation by searching for the maximum slope of the power density spectrum of the fast fading performs best.}},

  abstract     = {{The Fehrer-Raab effect (simple reaction time is unaffected by metacontrast masking of the test stimulus) seems to imply that a stimulus can trigger a voluntary reaction without reaching a conscious representation. However, it is also possible that the mask triggers the reaction, and that the masked test stimulus causes a focussing of attention from which processing of the mask profits, thus reaching conscious representation earlier. This is predicted by the Weather Station Model of visual masking. Three experiments tested this explanation. Experiment 1 showed that the masked test stimulus caused a temporal shift of the mask. Experiment 2 showed that the reaction in the Fehrer-Raab effect was not exclusively triggered by a conscious representation of the test stimulus: the mask was involved in evoking the reaction. efficiently execute an UML 2.0 subset for embedded real-
time systems implementation with focus on hardware
interrupts, software exceptions, and timeouts. We
introduce a UML Virtual Machine, which directly
executes sequence diagrams, which are embedded into
hierarchically structured state transition diagrams.
Whereas state diagrams are directly executed as
Embedded State Machines (ESMs), sequence diagrams
are translated into UVM Bytecode. The final UVM
execution is performed by the interaction of the ESM and
the Bytecode Interpreter. Due to our completely model-
based approach, the UVM runtime kernel is easily
adaptable and scalable to different scheduling and
memory management strategies.}},
