text: To decide in which part of town to open stores, high street retailers
consult statistical data on customers and cities, but they cannot analyze their
customers’ shopping behavior and geospatial features of a city due to missing
data. While previous research has proposed recommendation systems and
decision aids that address this type of decision problem – including factory
location and assortment planning – there currently is no design knowledge
available to prescribe the design of city center area recommendation systems
(CCARS). We set out to design a software prototype considering local
customers’ shopping interests and geospatial data on their shopping trips for
retail site selection. With real data on 500 customers and 1,100 shopping trips,
we demonstrate and evaluate our IT artifact. Our results illustrate how retailers
and public town center managers can use CCARS for spatial location selection,
growing retailers’ profits and a city center’s attractiveness for its citizens.

  text:
Much work on innovation strategy assumes or theorizes that competition
in innovation elicits duplication of research and that disclosure decreases such
duplication. We validate this empirically using the American Inventors Protection
Act (AIPA), three complementary identification strategies, and a new measure of
blocked future patent applications. We show that AIPA—intended to reduce duplication,
through default disclosure of patent applications 18 months after filing—reduced
duplication in the U.S. and European patent systems. The blocking measure provides
a clear and micro measure of technological competition that can be aggregated
to facilitate the empirical investigation of innovation, firm strategy, and the
positive and negative externalities of patenting.
This paper

text: "Literature reviews (LRs) play an important role in the development of domain
knowledge in all fields. Yet, we observe a\r\nlack of insights into the activities
with which LRs actually develop knowledge. To address this important gap, we (1)\r\nderive
knowledge building activities from the extant literature on LRs, (2) suggest a
knowledge-based typology of LRs\r\nthat complements existing typologies, and (3)
apply the suggested typology in an empirical study that explores how LRs\r\nwith
different goals and methodologies have contributed to knowledge development. The
analysis of 240 LRs published\r\nin 40 renowned IS journals between 2000 and 2014
allows us to draw a detailed picture of knowledge development\r\nachieved by one
of the most important genres in the IS field. An overarching contribution of our
work is to unify extant\r\nconceptualizations of LRs by clarifying and illustrating
how LRs apply different methodologies in a range of knowledge\r\nbuilding activities
to achieve their goals with respect to theory."

text: The article addresses how motivational learning approaches (competency-oriented, aesthetic and biographical) can contribute to the professionalization
of preservice teachers during a long-term internship. As a theoretical basis,
the self-determination theory serves as a central motivational theory for explaining
    self-determined action.

text: "The aim of this study was to find out whether teaching how to search for
literature\r\nwould be more beneficial to students and teachers if done online
through short videos\r\nrather than in person during course time. To find out
whether online videos are more\r\nbeneficial, two courses were asked to fill in
questionnaires, one at the beginning and\r\none at the end of the semester. One
of the courses received the input online via videos\r\nand were given an exercise
to put the newly learned skills to use, the other course\r\nserved as a control
group and learned how to search for literature during the course.\r\nThe results
show that while the difference between the two groups is not significant,\r\nthe
videos can still be regarded as being more beneficial than teaching the necessary\r\nskills
    during course time."

text: "Digital data on tangible and intangible cultural assets is an essential part
of daily life, communication and experience. It has a lasting influence on the
perception of cultural identity as well as on the interactions between research,
the cultural economy and society. Throughout the last three decades, many cultural
heritage institutions have contributed a wealth of digital representations of
cultural assets (2D digital reproductions of paintings, sheet music, 3D digital
models of sculptures, monuments, rooms, buildings), audio-visual data (music,
film, stage performances), and procedural research data such as encoding and annotation
formats. The long-term preservation and FAIR availability of research data from
the cultural heritage domain is fundamentally important, not only for future academic
success in the humanities but also for the cultural identity of individuals and
society as a whole. Up to now, no coordinated effort for professional research
data management on a national level exists in Germany. NFDI4Culture aims to fill
this gap and create a user-centered, research-driven infrastructure that will
cover a broad range of research domains from musicology, art history and architecture
to performance, theatre, film, and media studies.
\r\n
The
research landscape addressed by the consortium is characterized by strong institutional
differentiation. Research units in the consortium's community of interest comprise
university institutes, art colleges, academies, galleries, libraries, archives
and museums. This diverse landscape is also characterized by an abundance of research
objects, methodologies and a great potential for data-driven research. In a unique
effort carried out by the applicant and co-applicants of this proposal and ten
academic societies, this community is interconnected for the first time through
a federated approach that is ideally suited to the needs of the participating
researchers. To promote collaboration within the NFDI, to share knowledge and
technology and to provide extensive support for its users have been the guiding
principles of the consortium from the beginning and will be at the heart of all
workflows and decision-making processes. Thanks to these principles, NFDI4Culture
has gathered strong support ranging from individual researchers to high-level
cultural heritage organizations such as the UNESCO, the International Council
of Museums, the Open Knowledge Foundation and Wikimedia. On this basis, NFDI4Culture
will take innovative measures that promote a cultural change towards a more reflective
and sustainable handling of research data and at the same time boost qualification
and professionalization in data-driven research in the domain of cultural heritage.
This will create a long-lasting impact on science, cultural economy and society
    as a whole."

text: OpenML is an online machine learning platform where researchers can easily
share data, machine learning tasks and experiments as well as organize them online
to work and collaborate more efficiently. In this paper, we present an R package
to interface with the OpenML platform and illustrate its usage in combination
with the machine learning R package mlr (Bischl et al. J Mach Learn Res 17(170):1—5,
2016). We show how the OpenML package allows R users to easily search, download
and upload data sets and machine learning tasks. Furthermore, we also show how
to upload results of experiments, share them with others and download results
from other users. Beyond ensuring reproducibility of results, the OpenML platform
automates much of the drudge work, speeds up research, facilitates collaboration
and increases the users’ visibility online.

education, however, are particularly challenging areas to realize inter- and transdisciplinary
collaborations, for manifold reasons.\r\nThis contribution presents methods and
results of an inter- and transdisciplinary research and education strategy designed
to meet the particular requirements of engineers and engineering students. It
starts with a brief discussion of typical challenges regarding inter- and transdisciplinary
approaches in engineering (research topics, research culture, skills, time, and
barriers of lay people to involve in technology development). Secondly, it presents
the methods developed to overcome those challenges within the context of the NRW
    Fortschrittskolleg \"Light - Efficient - Mobile\" (FK LEM). Founded in 2014, the
FK LEM is a PhD programm focuses on lightweight construction, but with a special
emphasis on how lightweight technologies are connected to different areas of society,
to societal actors and technology users, and to the needs of a diversity of social
groups. In order to explore these connections, we organized three workshops to
bring public service, civil society, industry, practitioners and engineers together
to discuss the perceived needs in those areas, and the potential of lightweight
solutions. Topically, the workshops were dedicated to the fields of Rescue & Security
Services; Care, Mobility & Assisted Living; and Sustainable Ressources & Climate
Protection. Methodologically, we applied a pragmatic but valid approach to focus
groups and discourse analysis. Results of the workshops in terms of directions
for future research, epistemological and ethical dimensions of lightweight engineering
are presented in the third part of our contribution. Finally, we discuss how our
method and experience can be transferred into other engineering and educational
contexts. With other words, how empowering students, engineers and the public
to involve in inter- and transdisciplinary engineering processes can be achieved,
and how this empowerment supports the development of innovative technologies as
well as engineers’ skills to design technology in line with societies’ needs and
    challenges."

text: Although many methods have been proposed for engineering service systems and
customer solutions, most of these approaches give little consideration to recombinant
service innovation. Recombinant innovation refers to reusing and integrating resources
that were previously unconnected. In an age of networked products and data, we
can expect that many service innovations will be based on adding, dissociating,
and associating existing value propositions by accessing internal and external
resources instead of designing them from scratch. The purpose of this paper is
to identify if current service engineering approaches account for the mechanisms
of recombinant innovation and to design a method for recombinant service systems
engineering. In a conceptual analysis of 24 service engineering methods, the study
identified that most methods (1) focus on designing value propositions instead
of service systems, (2) view service independent of physical goods, (3) are either
linear or iterative instead of agile, and (4) do not sufficiently address the
mechanisms of recombinant innovation. The paper discusses how these deficiencies
can be remedied and designs a revised service systems engineering approach that
reorganizes service engineering processes according to four design principles.
The method is demonstrated with the recombinant design of a service system for
    predictive maintenance of agricultural machines.

text: 'This article provides an insight into a qualitative research project concerning
music educational practices with mobile music technologies. Based on social systems
theory, this grounded-theory study observes how groups in two extracurricular
music classes construct different technologies (e. g., iPads, mixers, ear phones)
within the emergence of (reflexive) expectations as social structures. The results
reveal five categories of technologies: technology as an instrument-toy-alternator
that supports motivation, as a medium for knowledge and learning, as an adjusting
device used for socio-aesthetic decision making, as a didactical tool for task-based
situations, and as an isolator for inner differentiation by focusing aural perception.

text: During the past decade, there has been an increase of pedagogical research
under conditions of posthuman theories, such as the Actor Network Theory or post-phenomenology.
Yet, there has not been much research on the materiality of music pedagogical
practices. This article introduces an ongoing grounded-theory study on the role
of things (e.g., music instruments, black board, or digital devices) within the
music classroom. Results from the analysis of group discussions and interviews
with student teachers show tensions between personal preferences, school conventions,
and material conventions within the process of introducing things into the classroom.

text: 'Within recent years, research on music learning in groups has increased.
But the distinction between collaboration and cooperation is mostly unclear. This
article aims to distinguish both concepts by presenting a study on popular music
learning in groups (Godau, 2017) based on elements of the learning approach in
Musical Futures (Green, 2008). As a result, the two concepts are seen as complementary.
They form the poles of a continuum of collective learning: Collaboration characterizes
the collective action toward the common goal. By contrast, cooperation occurs
when group members act separately toward achieving the common goal. (DIPF/Orig.)'

text: 'Literature reviews (LRs) are recognized for their increasing impact in the
information systems literature. Methodologists have drawn attention to the question
of how we can leverage the value of LRs to preserve and generate knowledge. The
panelists who participated in the discussion of ?Standalone Literature Reviews
in IS Research: What Can Be Learnt from the Past and Other Fields?? at ICIS 2016
in Dublin acknowledged this significant issue and debated a) what the IS field
can learn from other fields and where IS-specific challenges occur, b) how the
IS field should move forward to foster the genre of LRs, and c) what best practices
are to train doctoral IS students in publishing LRs. This article reports the
key takeaways of this panel discussion. Guidance for IS scholars is provided on
how to conduct LRs that contribute to the cumulative knowledge development within
and across the IS field to best prepare the next generation of IS scholars.'

text: "Purpose\r\n– The purpose of this paper is to examine the nature of context
and its implications for theory and research in service. \r\n\r\nDesign/methodology/approach\r\n–
This is a conceptual paper based on exploring existing research and theory related
to context in service research. \r\n\r\nFindings\r\n– The characteristics of service
make context both important and challenging, there is great contextual diversity
in service research as reflected, for example in ecosystems made up of multiple
contextual variables. There is a need to identify the context-specific nature
of middle range theory and the contextual logic of general theory. The authors
explore the challenges of context for service theory and how we might learn from
theory in a particular context and test or adapt it in other contexts. \r\n\r\nOriginality/value\r\n–
The findings of this paper are of value to researchers seeking to develop and
justify theory in service research (general, middle range or theory in use)."

text: Literature reviews play an important role in the development of knowledge.
Yet, we observe a lack of theoretical underpinning of and epistemological insights
into how literature reviews can contribute to knowledge creation and have actually
contributed in the IS discipline. To address these theoretical and empirical research
gaps, we suggest a novel epistemological model of literature reviews. This model
allows us to align different contributions of literature reviews with their underlying
knowledge conversions - thereby building a bridge between the previously largely
unconnected fields of literature reviews and epistemology. We evaluate the appropriateness
of the model by conducting an empirical analysis of 173 IS literature reviews
which were published in 39 pertinent IS journals between 2000 and 2014. Based
on this analysis, we derive an epistemological taxonomy of IS literature reviews,
    which complements previously suggested typologies.
