Completely new challenges for the teaching of mathematics and computer science have emerged, as well as for the subjects of the social and cultural sciences field and for cross-curricular media education. All these subjects have to be reinterpreted in regard to the raising attention to data science, to big data and in regard to a fundamentally changing world of labor and economy. As a reaction, schools have to realize a broad general education that is to be newly defined on the one hand. On the other hand, school education has to stimulate and promote interest in the current, exciting and dynamic new scientific area of data science with its numerous applications. This book presents the extended abstracts of the presentations at a symposium held in November 2017, discussing economic, social and cultural impacts of big data and data science with experts in curriculum development and educational research in statistics and computer science as well as experts from different facets of data science and its applications. Moreover, analyses from a socio-cultural perspective were included. The main goal was to inspire ideas for teaching data science in secondary schools."}],"citation":{"ama":"Biehler R, Budde L, Frischemeier D, et al. Paderborn Symposium on Data Science Education at School Level 2017: The Collected Extended Abstracts. In recent years, this interdisciplinary research has grown significantly covering research with regards to optimal compensation, investment decisions, tax avoidance and transfer pricing while analyzing the effects of corporate income taxes, wage taxes, bonus taxes and shareholder taxes. Our paper provides a comprehensive review of analytical literature that studies the influence of taxation on agency conflicts between firm owners and managers. Above and beyond summarizing research findings, we discuss how taxes are commonly implemented in agency models, derive empirical predictions, and identify research gaps for future tax research."}]},{"date_created":"2025-09-12T11:46:28Z","oa":"1","type":"conference_editor","citation":{"short":"S. The frequency-domain\r\ncoupled-mode models then combine these into fully vectorial approximations for the optical electromagnetic\r\nfields of the composite structure. Following a discretization of amplitude functions by 1D finite elements, pro-\r\ncedures from the realm of finite-element numerics are applied to establish systems of linear equations for the then-\r\ndiscrete modal amplitudes. Examples substantiate the functioning of the technique and allow for some numerical\r\nassessment. The full 3D simulations are highly efficient in memory consumption, moderately demanding in com-\r\nputational time, and, in regimes of low radiative losses, sufficiently accurate for practical design. Our results\r\ninclude the perturbation of guided modes by changes of the refractive indices, the interaction of waves in parallel,\r\nhorizontally or vertically coupled straight waveguides, and a series of crossings of potentially overlapping channels\r\nwith fairly arbitrary relative positions and orientations.","lang":"eng"}],"issue":"3","publication":"Journal of the Optical Society of America B","doi":"10.1364/josab.34.000613","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"publication_status":"published","date_updated":"2022-01-06T06:59:38Z","article_type":"original","intvolume":" 34","year":"2017","title":"Hybrid coupled-mode modeling in 3D: perturbed and coupled channels, and waveguide crossings","author":[{"id":"48077","full_name":"Hammer, Manfred","first_name":"Manfred","last_name":"Hammer","orcid":"0000-0002-6331-9348"},{"full_name":"Alhaddad, Samer","last_name":"Alhaddad","first_name":"Samer"},{"id":"158","full_name":"Förstner, Jens","last_name":"Förstner","first_name":"Jens","orcid":"0000-0001-7059-9862"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["0740-3224","1520-8540"]}},{"date_created":"2018-08-07T10:13:24Z","file":[{"content_type":"application/pdf","file_id":"3833","access_level":"open_access","file_size":3225569,"file_name":"2017-06 Xiahong_Direction-tunable enhanced emission from a subwavelength metallic double-nanoslit structure_Optics Express.pdf","date_updated":"2018-09-03T14:12:22Z","relation":"main_file","date_created":"2018-08-07T10:17:15Z","creator":"hclaudia"}],"department":[{"_id":"61"}],"type":"journal_article","keyword":["tet_topic_plasmonics"],"publication":"Optics Express","issue":"12","abstract":[{"text":"Controlling light emission out of subwavelength nanoslit/aperture structures is of great important for highly integrated photonic circuits. To manage it and develop effective simplification measures, detailed information on the current drivers of complexity is required. However, research on this topic is scarce. This is surprising as the latest developments—for example, triggered by the BEPS project—give rise to the conjecture that complexity drivers may have changed, thus questioning the findings of prior studies. In this paper, we shed light on this issue and provide a global picture of the current drivers of tax complexity that multinational corporations face based on a survey of 221 highly experienced tax practitioners from 108 countries. Our results show that prior complexity drivers of the tax code are still relevant, with details and changes of tax regulations being the two most influential complexity drivers. We also find evidence for new relevant complexity drivers emerging from different areas of the tax framework, such as inconsistent decisions among tax officers (tax audits) or retroactively applied tax law amendments (tax enactment). Based on the responses of the practitioners, we develop a concept of tax complexity that distinguishes two pillars, tax code and tax framework complexity, and illustrates the various aspects that should be considered when assessing the complexity of a country’s tax system."}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1","url":"https://ssrn.com/abstract=3046546"}],"doi":"10.2139/ssrn.3046546","author":[{"first_name":"Thomas","last_name":"Hoppe","full_name":"Hoppe, Thomas","id":"22671"},{"full_name":"Schanz, Deborah","last_name":"Schanz","first_name":"Deborah"},{"first_name":"Susann","last_name":"Sturm","full_name":"Sturm, Susann"},{"last_name":"Sureth-Sloane","first_name":"Caren","full_name":"Sureth-Sloane, Caren","id":"530"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["1556-5068"]},"year":"2017","title":"What are the Drivers of Tax Complexity for Multinational Corporations? We show that allocation of chores and classical allocation of goods (items with positive utilities) have some fundamental connections but also differences which prevent a straightforward application of algorithms for goods in the chores setting and viceversa. We prove that an MmS allocation does not need to exist for chores and computing an MmS allocation - if it exists - is strongly NP-hard. In view of these non-existence and complexity results, we present a polynomial-time 2-approximation algorithm for MmS fairness for chores. We then introduce a new fairness concept called optimal MmS that represents the best possible allocation in terms of MmS that is guaranteed to exist. We use connections to parallel machine scheduling to give (1) a polynomial-time approximation scheme for computing an optimal MmS allocation when the number of agents is fixed and (2) an effective and efficient heuristic with an ex-post worst-case analysis.","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Thirty-First AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence (AAAI-17)","issue":"1","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"intvolume":" 31","date_updated":"2022-01-06T07:02:35Z","author":[{"first_name":"Haris","last_name":"Aziz","full_name":"Aziz, Haris"},{"full_name":"Rauchecker, Gerhard","first_name":"Gerhard","last_name":"Rauchecker"},{"last_name":"Schryen","first_name":"Guido","full_name":"Schryen, Guido","id":"72850"},{"full_name":"Walsh, Toby","last_name":"Walsh","first_name":"Toby"}],"year":"2017","title":"Algorithms for Max-Min Share Fair Allocation of Indivisible Chores","oa":"1","citation":{"mla":"Aziz, Haris, et al. “Algorithms for Max-Min Share Fair Allocation of Indivisible Chores.” Thirty-First AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence (AAAI-17), vol. 31, no. 1, 2017, pp. 1–7.","bibtex":"@inproceedings{Aziz_Rauchecker_Schryen_Walsh_2017, title={Algorithms for Max-Min Share Fair Allocation of Indivisible Chores}, volume={31}, number={1}, booktitle={Thirty-First AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence (AAAI-17)}, author={Aziz, Haris and Rauchecker, Gerhard and Schryen, Guido and Walsh, Toby}, year={2017}, pages={1–7} }","ama":"Aziz H, Rauchecker G, Schryen G, Walsh T. For extended flexibility, we go beyond seeing services as a fixed chain of functions. We define the service structure in a flexible way that enables changing the order of functions in case the functionality of the service is not influenced by this, and propose a YANG data model for expressing this flexibility. Flexible structures allow the network orchestration system to choose the optimal composition of service components that for example gives the best results for placement of services in the network. When number of flexible services and number of components in each service increase, combinatorial explosion limits the practical use of this flexibility. In this paper, we describe a selection heuristic that gives a Pareto set of the possible compositions of a service as well as possible combinations of different services, with respect to different optimization objectives. Moreover, we present a heuristic algorithm for placement of a combination of services, which aims at placing service components along shortest paths that have enough capacity for accommodating the services. By applying these solutions, we show that allowing flexibility in the service structure is feasible.","lang":"eng"}],"issue":"2","publication":"International Journal of Network Management","type":"journal_article","department":[{"_id":"75"}],"file":[{"creator":"florida","date_created":"2018-03-21T13:18:13Z","file_name":"58-preprint-ijnm.pdf","file_size":2765738,"access_level":"open_access","relation":"hidden","date_updated":"2018-06-13T09:15:42Z","file_id":"1579","content_type":"application/pdf"},{"creator":"sevilmeh","date_created":"2018-06-13T09:22:37Z","file_name":"58-accepted-ijnm.pdf","access_level":"open_access","file_size":2766920,"relation":"main_file","date_updated":"2018-06-13T09:22:37Z","file_id":"3197","content_type":"application/pdf"}],"date_created":"2017-10-17T12:41:02Z","date_updated":"2022-01-06T07:02:42Z","title":"Specification, Composition, and Placement of Network Services with Flexible Structures","year":"2017","author":[{"first_name":"Sevil","last_name":"Dräxler","full_name":"Dräxler, Sevil","id":"31764"},{"id":"126","full_name":"Karl, Holger","first_name":"Holger","last_name":"Karl"}],"doi":"10.1002/nem.1963","project":[{"_id":"1","name":"SFB 901"},{"name":"SFB 901 - Subprojekt C4","_id":"16"},{"name":"SFB 901 - Project Area C","_id":"4"},{"call_identifier":"5G PPP Phase 1","name":"SONATA NFV: Agile Service Development and Orchestration in 5G Virtualized Networks","grant_number":"671517","_id":"25"}],"file_date_updated":"2018-06-13T09:22:37Z","citation":{"bibtex":"@article{Dräxler_Karl_2017, title={Specification, Composition, and Placement of Network Services with Flexible Structures}, DOI={10.1002/nem.1963}, number={2}, journal={International Journal of Network Management}, publisher={Wiley Online Library}, author={Dräxler, Sevil and Karl, Holger}, year={2017}, pages={1--16} }","ama":"Dräxler S, Karl H. Yet there is still no method for determining BI&A costs to provide a base for allocation purposes. While literature describes several methods for BI&A cost estimation on an ROI or resource-consumption level, none of these methods considers an overall approach for BI&A. To tackle this problem, we propose a service-oriented cost allocation model which calculates BI&A applications based on defined services, enabling a cost transfer to service consumers. This new approach specifies steps towards deriving a usable pricing scheme for an entire BI&A service portfolio – both for allocation purposes as well as improving cost evaluation of BI&A projects. Moreover, it prevents BI&A departments from being considered as the sole cost driver, increasing customer understanding and cost awareness.","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Proceedings of the 50th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (2017)","citation":{"short":"R. Network softwarization and network function virtualization have been introduced to tackle these problems, aiming at decreasing costs and complexity of implementing new services, maintaining the implemented services, and managing available resources in service provisioning platforms and underlying infrastructures. To experience the full potential of these approaches, innovative development support tools and service provisioning environments are needed. To answer these needs, we introduce the architecture of the open-source SONATA system, a service programming, orchestration, and management framework. We present a development toolchain for virtualized network services, fully integrated with a service platform and orchestration system. We introduce the modular and flexible architecture of our system and discuss its main components and features, such as function- and service-specific managers that allow fine-grained service management, slicing support to facilitate multi-tenancy, recursiveness for improved scalability, and full-featured DevOps support.","lang":"eng"}],"date_created":"2017-11-22T09:42:59Z","file":[{"content_type":"application/pdf","success":1,"file_id":"5270","file_size":821211,"access_level":"closed","file_name":"07962785.pdf","date_updated":"2018-11-02T14:22:10Z","relation":"main_file","date_created":"2018-11-02T14:22:10Z","creator":"ups"}],"department":[{"_id":"75"}],"type":"conference","conference":{"start_date":"2017-05-21","name":"2017 IEEE International Conference on Communications Workshops (ICC Workshops)","location":"Paris, France","end_date":"2017-05-25"},"status":"public","has_accepted_license":"1","_id":"717","publisher":"IEEE","ddc":["000"],"user_id":"31764","citation":{"chicago":"Dräxler, Sevil, Holger Karl, Manuel Peuster, Hadi Razzaghi Kouchaksaraei, Michael Bredel, Johannes Lessmann, Thomas Soenen, Wouter Tavernier, Sharon Mendel-Brin, and George Xilouris. “SONATA: Service Programming and Orchestration for Virtualized Software Networks.” In 2017 IEEE International Conference on Communications Workshops (ICC Workshops). These integration tasks require testbeds that offer the\r\n needed network function virtualization infrastructure~(NFVI), like OpenStack, introducing a\r\n lot of management and maintenance overheads. Such testbed setups\r\n become even more complicated when the multi\r\n point-of-presence~(PoP) case, with multiple infrastructure\r\n installations, is considered.\r\n\r\n In this demo, we showcase an emulation platform that executes\r\n containerized network services in user-defined multi-PoP\r\n topologies. The platform does not only allow network service developers to\r\n locally test their services but also to connect real-world\r\n management and orchestration solutions to the emulated PoPs. During our\r\n interactive demonstration we focus on the integration between\r\n the emulated infrastructure and state-of-the-art orchestration\r\n solutions like SONATA or OSM.","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"IEEE Conference on Network Softwarization, NetSoft 2017, Bologna, Italy, July 3-7, 2017","type":"conference","department":[{"_id":"75"}],"file":[{"date_created":"2018-07-05T11:14:37Z","creator":"peuster","content_type":"application/pdf","file_id":"3432","file_size":963155,"access_level":"open_access","file_name":"main_ris.pdf","date_updated":"2018-07-05T11:14:37Z","relation":"main_file"}],"date_created":"2017-11-27T10:22:25Z"}]
