Addressing this research gap, this paper presents a comprehensive empirical investigation of the patching behavior of software vendors/communities of widely deployed open source and closed source software packages, including operating systems, database systems, web browsers, email clients, and office systems. As the value of any empirical study relies on the quality of data available, this paper also discusses in detail data issues, explains to what extent the empirical analysis can be based on vulnerability data contained in the NIST National Vulnerability Database, and shows how data on vulnerability patches was collected by the author to support this study. The results of the analysis suggest that it is not the particular software development style that determines patching behavior, but rather the policy of the particular software vendor.","lang":"eng"}],"date_created":"2018-11-14T14:40:04Z","file":[{"relation":"main_file","date_updated":"2018-12-18T13:14:48Z","file_name":"Conference Version.pdf","access_level":"open_access","file_size":594302,"file_id":"6311","content_type":"application/pdf","creator":"hsiemes","date_created":"2018-12-18T13:14:48Z"}],"department":[{"_id":"277"}],"oa":"1","type":"conference"},{"type":"conference","keyword":["Vulnerabilities","security","open source software","closed source software","empirical comparison"],"department":[{"_id":"277"}],"file":[{"relation":"main_file","date_updated":"2018-12-18T13:16:39Z","file_name":"Security of Open Source and Closed Source Software An Empirical - AMCIS Version.pdf","file_size":483690,"access_level":"open_access","file_id":"6317","content_type":"application/pdf","creator":"hsiemes","date_created":"2018-12-18T13:16:39Z"}],"date_created":"2018-11-14T14:41:24Z","extern":"1","abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"Reviewing literature on open source and closed source security reveals that the discussion is often determined by biased attitudes toward one of these development styles. The discussion specifically lacks appropriate metrics, methodology and hard data. This paper contributes to solving this problem by analyzing and comparing published vulnerabilities of eight open source software and nine closed source software packages, all of which are widely deployed. Thereby, it provides an extensive empirical analysis of vulnerabilities in terms of mean time between vulnerability disclosures, the development of disclosure over time, and the severity of vulnerabilities, and allows for validating models provided in the literature. The investigation reveals that (a) the mean time between vulnerability disclosures was lower for open source software in half of the cases, while the other cases show no differences, (b) in contrast to literature assumption, 14 out of 17 software packages showed a significant linear or piecewise linear correlation between time and the number of published vulnerabilities, and (c) regarding the severity of vulnerabilities, no significant differences were found between open source and closed source."}],"publication":"15th Americas Conference on Information Systems","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"date_updated":"2022-01-06T07:02:19Z","title":"Security of open source and closed source software: An empirical comparison of published vulnerabilities","year":"2009","author":[{"id":"72850","last_name":"Schryen","first_name":"Guido","full_name":"Schryen, Guido"}],"oa":"1","file_date_updated":"2018-12-18T13:16:39Z","citation":{"mla":"Schryen, Guido. “Security of Open Source and Closed Source Software: An Empirical Comparison of Published Vulnerabilities.” 15th Americas Conference on Information Systems, 2009.","ama":"Schryen G. Notably during times when the GPS signal has a poor quality, e.g. due to the lack of a sufficiently large number of visible satellites, the INS, which may consist of a gyroscope and an odometer, will lead to improved positioning accuracy. In this paper we show how velocity information obtained from GSM (global system for mobile communications) signalling, rather than from a tachometer, can be used together with a gyroscope sensor to support localization in the presence of temporarily unavailable GPS data. We propose a sensor fusion system architecture and present simulation results that show the effectiveness of this approach."}],"publication":"6th Workshop on Positioning Navigation and Communication (WPNC 2009)","citation":{"ieee":"S. In this paper, these model types are combined in order to obtain a novel iterative speech feature enhancement and recognition architecture. It is shown that speech feature enhancement with SLDMs can be improved by feeding back information from the HMM to the enhancement stage. Two different feedback structures are derived. In the first, the posteriors of the HMM states are used to control the model probabilities of the SLDMs, while in the second they are employed to directly influence the estimate of the speech feature distribution. Both approaches lead to improvements in recognition accuracy both on the AURORA2 and AURORA4 databases compared to non-iterative speech feature enhancement with SLDMs. It is also shown that a combination with uncertainty decoding further enhances performance."}],"publication":"IEEE Transactions on Audio, Speech, and Language Processing","issue":"5","volume":17,"user_id":"44006","_id":"11937","page":"974-984","status":"public","oa":"1","citation":{"mla":"Windmann, Stefan, and Reinhold Haeb-Umbach. “Approaches to Iterative Speech Feature Enhancement and Recognition.” IEEE Transactions on Audio, Speech, and Language Processing, vol. 17, no. 5, 2009, pp. 974–84, doi:10.1109/TASL.2009.2014894.","bibtex":"@article{Windmann_Haeb-Umbach_2009, title={Approaches to Iterative Speech Feature Enhancement and Recognition}, volume={17}, DOI={10.1109/TASL.2009.2014894}, number={5}, journal={IEEE Transactions on Audio, Speech, and Language Processing}, author={Windmann, Stefan and Haeb-Umbach, Reinhold}, year={2009}, pages={974–984} }","ama":"Windmann S, Haeb-Umbach R. Further a sequential online EM algorithm is developed to adapt the observation noise covariance on noisy speech cepstra at its input. The accuracy of techniques like beamforming directly depends on a precise knowledge of the relative positions of the sensors used. Unfortunately, for certain use cases manually measuring the geometry of an array is not feasible due to practical constraints. In this paper we present an approach to unsupervised shape calibration of microphone array networks. We developed a hierarchical procedure that first performs local shape calibration based on coherence analysis and then employs SRP-PHAT in a network calibration method. Practical experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach especially for highly reverberant acoustic environments.","lang":"eng"}],"quality_controlled":"1","citation":{"apa":"Hennecke, M., Ploetz, T., Fink, G.
