This dual role gives rise to a normative scientific conflict: Does the structural incentive to publish constitute a conflict of interest (COI) that ought to be disclosed? In this paper, we address this conflict through an action research approach, engaging collaboratively and reflexively to answer four related questions: (1) What evidence suggests that researchers face a (financial) COI when publishing? (2) What are the benefits and drawbacks of explicitly acknowledging that publications function as academic currency? (3) How should such conflicts be disclosed? (4) Do mechanisms such as pre-registration and registered reports resolve these concerns? This paper contends that while researchers are clearly incentivised to publish, this interest need not necessarily constitute a conflict or be explicitly disclosed. Treating this issue as a normative scientific conflict does reveal the need for a shift in how researchers understand and navigate the subjective, self-interested dimensions of their work. We propose four key responses: (1) integrating discussions of COIs and biases more extensively into undergraduate science education, (2) promoting greater reflexivity in everyday research practice (e.g., through reflexivity journals, peer-led audit groups, and the reintegration of discussions on the historicity and cultural nature of research into scientific publications), (3) critically investigating institutional incentives and journal policies, and (4) proactively adopting methodological safeguards such as pre-registration. This dissertation addresses the development of an inductively based localization method using planar coils, which relies on magnetic coupling. The underlying principle is electromagnetic induction, where the resulting voltage is proportional to the mutual inductance. The method operates in the physical near field and within a frequency range from a few kHz to MHz, ensuring efficient coupling without the propagation of electromagnetic waves. Compared to established methods such as GPS or ultrasound, inductive localization offers advantages at short range—particularly high accuracy in the centimeter range and low dependency on surrounding materials. Additionally, it can be integrated into existing technologies, such as wireless power transfer systems, and combined with other methods through sensor fusion. To support modeling and optimization, the physical properties of planar coils and electromagnetic fields are analyzed, and equivalent electrical circuit models are used. Geometry-based calculations of mutual inductance enable the development and evaluation of suitable localization algorithms. Stochastic filtering methods further enhance robustness against environmental influences. Finally, a modular simulation platform is presented, which serves as a foundation for generating training data as well as for the further development of measurement, localization, and filtering methods.","lang":"eng"}],"doi":"10.17619/UNIPB/1-2436","language":[{"iso":"ger"}],"main_file_link":[{"url":"https://digital.ub.uni-paderborn.de/hs/content/titleinfo/8122147","open_access":"1"}],"date_updated":"2025-11-12T10:15:29Z","publication_status":"published","author":[{"full_name":"Lange, Sven","first_name":"Sven","orcid":"0009-0007-9150-2266 ","last_name":"Lange","id":"38240"}],"title":"Analyse und Modellierung eines induktiven Ortungsprozesses unter Berücksichtigung der elektromagnetischen Wechselwirkungen planarer Spulensysteme","year":"2025","oa":"1","place":"Paderborn","supervisor":[{"id":"158","orcid":"0000-0001-7059-9862","first_name":"Jens","last_name":"Förstner","full_name":"Förstner, Jens"},{"first_name":"Marcus","last_name":"Stiemer","full_name":"Stiemer, Marcus"}],"citation":{"ieee":"S. This approach consists of an educational programme that works with a multidisciplinary group of undergraduate students, so-called Culture Fellows. In the programme, the students learn about theories on disciplinary cultures and their practices, Decoding the Disciplines, and communication. The programme focuses on the implicitness of disciplinary practices and how to explore them, i.e., it seeks to address the importance of making disciplinary practices, norms, and values more accessible to students. Within the programme, the Culture Fellows use a student-based variant of the Decoding the Disciplines Paradigm that we call ‘Culture Quest’. The Culture Quest supplies students with the tools to question, explore, and decode their respective disciplines and practices. Disciplinary practices often remain implicit because lecturers, with their wealth of experience and expertise in their discipline, may be operationally blind and thus no longer aware of the fact that certain practices might need to be explained. This lack of explanation or explicitness can lead to students feeling bewildered, confused or puzzled. The Culture Fellows and in particular the Culture Quest can encourage dialogue about and exploration of disciplinary cultures and their practices and can thus allow students to grasp the implicit cultural norms and expectations within their respective disciplines more clearly. The Culture Fellows and the Culture Quest provide students – and maybe even lecturers – with opportunities to engage with and reflect on teaching and learning strategies and practices."}],"related_material":{"link":[{"relation":"confirmation","url":"https://journals.psu.edu/td/article/view/1913"}]},"date_created":"2025-10-23T18:11:48Z","department":[{"_id":"424"}],"type":"journal_article"},{"_id":"60847","page":"155-168","volume":42,"user_id":"95414","ddc":["770"],"status":"public","has_accepted_license":"1","oa":"1","citation":{"apa":"Brachtendorf, C. While the proliferation of AI-generated fashion images can be\r\nseen as the ultimate triumph of the fashion image over both fashion text\r\nand fashionable garments, this paper critically examines how these images\r\nare produced, what exactly they show, and ultimately, how this impacts our\r\nunderstanding of fashion. Building on current research on multimodal AI,\r\nspecifically text-to-image models, I argue that AI-generated fashion images\r\nare produced through textual means, that is, through “operative ekphrasis”\r\n(Bajohr 2024: 83). This means that the generation of fashion images created\r\nvia multimodal AI is based on textual prompts that extract statistically\r\nprobable images from a latent space, which, in turn, is the result of previously\r\nindexed and labeled image-text pairs. Because the indexing of images\r\nrequires a reduction of complexity, images generated through multimodal\r\nAI are often generic. In the case of fashion images, this is reflected in the lack\r\nof texture and the reproduction of fashion photography’s conventions. As\r\nfashion photography is not necessarily a representation of ‘the world’ or even\r\nfashionable garments, it resembles AI-generated images more than other photographic\r\ngenres. AI-generated fashion images are then not images of fashionable\r\ngarments, but images about fashion images—a statistically probable permutation\r\nof fashion photographs from the past (cf. Meyer 2023: 108). As such,\r\nAI-generated fashion images are not only the product of a mediated collective\r\nimaginary but also feed back into it. The view on fashion shaped by AI-generated\r\nfashion images is then based on reduction and stylized normativity."}]},{"date_updated":"2025-11-18T09:38:01Z","title":"Healthy Distrust in AI systems","year":"2025","status":"public","author":[{"full_name":"Paaßen, Benjamin","last_name":"Paaßen","first_name":"Benjamin"},{"id":"93637","first_name":"Suzana","last_name":"Alpsancar","full_name":"Alpsancar, Suzana"},{"id":"65695","first_name":"Tobias","last_name":"Matzner","full_name":"Matzner, Tobias"},{"full_name":"Scharlau, Ingrid","orcid":"0000-0003-2364-9489","first_name":"Ingrid","last_name":"Scharlau","id":"451"}],"user_id":"93637","main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1","url":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2505.09747"}],"_id":"59917","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"abstract":[{"text":"nder the slogan of trustworthy AI, much of contemporary AI research is focused on designing AI systems and usage practices that inspire human trust and, thus, enhance adoption of AI systems. However, a person affected by an AI system may not be convinced by AI system design alone---neither should they, if the AI system is embedded in a social context that gives good reason to believe that it is used in tension with a person’s interest. In such cases, distrust in the system may be justified and necessary to build meaningful trust in the first place. We propose the term \\emph{healthy distrust} to describe such a justified, careful stance towards certain AI usage practices. We investigate prior notions of trust and distrust in computer science, sociology, history, psychology, and philosophy, outline a remaining gap that healthy distrust might fill and conceptualize healthy distrust as a crucial part for AI usage that respects human autonomy.","lang":"eng"}],"project":[{"_id":"122","name":"TRR 318 - B3: TRR 318 - Subproject B3"},{"_id":"124","name":"TRR 318 - C1: TRR 318 - Subproject C1 - Gesundes Misstrauen in Erklärungen"},{"_id":"370","name":"TRR 318 - B06: TRR 318 - Teilprojekt B6 - Ethik und Normativität der erklärbaren KI"}],"publication":"arXiv","citation":{"short":"B. They afford exquisite capabilities for applications in quantum simulation of many-body physics, quantum computation, and sensing. Underlying this development is the technical maturity of generating scalable optical beams, enabled by active components and a high numerical aperture objective. However, such a complex combination of bulk optics outside the vacuum chamber is very sensitive to any vibration and drift. Here, we demonstrate the generation of a 3 × 3 static tweezer array with a single chip-scale multifunctional metasurface element in vacuum, replacing the meter-long free space optics. Fluorescence counts on the camera validate the successful trapping of the atomic ensemble array and showcase a promising strategy for integrated photonics with cold atom systems. The introduction of a polarization independent dual-wavelength metasurface significantly enhances fluorescence collection efficiency while reducing experimental complexity. This approach paves the way for scalable neutral atom platforms and offers a compelling route towards the realization of next generation quantum metasurfaces."}],"issue":"24","publication":"Optics Express","department":[{"_id":"15"},{"_id":"230"},{"_id":"289"},{"_id":"623"}],"type":"journal_article","date_created":"2025-11-24T06:31:17Z","status":"public","volume":33,"user_id":"30525","publisher":"Optica Publishing Group","_id":"62286","quality_controlled":"1","citation":{"short":"D.
