Many newer accounts of voice and identity in academic writing draw on the dialogical concept of voice by Bakhtin. However, some theoretical and methodological inconsistencies have surfaced in the adaptions of the concept. Working from a refinement of the dialogical notion of voice based on the concepts of polyphony and interiorization, this article presents a methodological approach for analyzing voice(s) in writing. The article presents material around the evolution of an early-career researcher’s dissertation synopsis. The material is multilayered, including the writer’s text, transcripts from an interdisciplinary peer-feedback conversation with two colleagues, and a video-stimulated interview with the writer. Excerpts of the material were analyzed to trace the polyphony of interiorized voices that influenced the writing. This focus revealed the multivoicedness of academic texts as an effect of their history of coming into being. This article contributes to the question of voice and identity in academic writing from a dialogical psycholinguistic perspective by presenting a de-reifying notion of voice grounded in an understanding of writing as a polyphonic activity, which also feeds into the formation of a writer’s self.
"}],"issue":"1","publication":"Written Communication"},{"date_created":"2025-09-11T07:22:05Z","type":"conference","department":[{"_id":"660"}],"publication":"Proceedings of the 2024 Conference on Empirical Methods in Natural Language Processing","abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"We examine how users perceive the limitations of an AI system when it encounters a task that it cannot perform perfectly and whether providing explanations alongside its answers aids users in constructing an appropriate mental model of the system's capabilities and limitations. As a subset of additive manufacturing (AM), the DED process, also referred to as laser metal deposition (LMD), enables precise, layer-by-layer material deposition, making it highly suitable for complex geometries and part repair applications. Critical parameters, such as the laser power, feed rate, powder mass flow, and substrate temperature govern the deposition process, impacting the bead height, width, contact angle, and dilution. Inconsistent control over these variables can lead to defects, such as poor bonding, dimensional inaccuracies, and material weaknesses, ultimately compromising the final product. This paper investigates the effects of various process parameters, specifically the substrate temperature, on bead track geometry in DED processes for stainless steel (1.4404). A specialized experimental setup, integrated within a DED machine, facilitates the controlled thermal conditioning of sample sheets. Using Design of Experiments (DoE) methods, individual bead marks are generated and analyzed to assess geometric characteristics. Regression models, including both linear and quadratic approaches, are constructed to predict machine parameters for achieving the desired bead geometry at different substrate temperatures. Validation experiments confirm the accuracy and reliability of the models, particularly in predicting the bead height, bead width, and contact angle across a broad range of substrate temperatures. However, the models demonstrated limitations in accurately predicting dilution, indicating the need for further refinement. Despite some deviations in measured values, successful fabrication is achieved, demonstrating robust bonding between the bead and substrate. The developed models offer insights into optimizing DED process parameters to achieve desired bead characteristics, advancing the precision and reliability of additive manufacturing technology. Future work will focus on refining the regression models to improve predictions, particularly for dilution, and further investigate non-linear interactions between process variables.
","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Metals","issue":"12","doi":"10.3390/met14121353","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"article_number":"1353","main_file_link":[{"url":"https://www.mdpi.com/2075-4701/14/12/1353","open_access":"1"}],"article_type":"original","intvolume":" 14","publication_status":"published","date_updated":"2026-03-20T08:44:28Z","author":[{"id":"49504","first_name":"Deviprasad","last_name":"Chalicheemalapalli Jayasankar","orcid":"https://orcid.org/ 0000-0002-3446-2444","full_name":"Chalicheemalapalli Jayasankar, Deviprasad"},{"full_name":"Gnaase, Stefan","first_name":"Stefan","last_name":"Gnaase","id":"25730"},{"first_name":"Dennis","last_name":"Lehnert","full_name":"Lehnert, Dennis","id":"90491"},{"first_name":"Artur","last_name":"Walter","full_name":"Walter, Artur"},{"full_name":"Rohling, Robin","first_name":"Robin","last_name":"Rohling"},{"id":"553","first_name":"Thomas","last_name":"Tröster","full_name":"Tröster, Thomas"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["2075-4701"]},"title":"Effect of Substrate Temperature on Bead Track Geometry of 316L in Directed Energy Deposition: Investigation and Regression Modeling","year":"2024"},{"status":"public","user_id":"49504","volume":14,"_id":"56089","publisher":"MDPI AG","quality_controlled":"1","citation":{"chicago":"Chalicheemalapalli Jayasankar, Deviprasad, Stefan Gnaase, Maximilian Alexander Kaiser, Dennis Lehnert, and Thomas Tröster. “Advancements in Hybrid Additive Manufacturing: Integrating SLM and LMD for High-Performance Applications.” Metals 14, no. 7 (2024). https://doi.org/10.3390/met14070772.","ama":"Chalicheemalapalli Jayasankar D, Gnaase S, Kaiser MA, Lehnert D, Tröster T. This points to a substantial opportunity for further optimization in material savings and process design. The current study delves into the advancement of sustainable manufacturing practices in the automotive industry, emphasizing the crucial role of lightweight construction concepts and AM technologies in enhancing resource efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. By exploring the integration of novel AM techniques such as selective laser melting (SLM) and laser metal deposition (LMD), the study aims to overcome existing limitations like slow build-up rates and limited component resolution. The study’s core objective revolves around the development and validation of a continuous process chain that synergizes different AM routes. In the current study, the continuous process chain for DMG MORI Lasertec 65 3D’s LMD system and the DMG MORI Lasertec 30 3D’s was demonstrated using 316L and 1.2709 steel materials. This integrated approach is designed to significantly curtail process times and minimize component costs, thus suggesting an industry-oriented process chain for future manufacturing paradigms. Additionally, the research investigates the production and material behavior of components under varying manufacturing processes, material combinations, and boundary layer materials. Business reputation ecosystems are a widely untapped research field. In these ecosystems, agents can selectively exchange (monetary) ratings to in-form about the experienced quality in a market. We build a model for conducting a multi-agent simulation that can be used to simulate and evaluate business rep-utation ecosystems as a new system class. We explore the factual occurring vol-untary payment to create positive (pay) or negative ratings (no pay), selling rat-ings selectively to alleviate information asymmetry, and the workings of counter-ratings to prevent buyers' dishonest ratings. Thereby, we analyze, among others, agent profitability, the occurrence of dishonest ratings, and reputation bias and sensitivity. The results provide simulation-based empirical evidence that the con-cept of monetary reputation systems provides necessary incentives for participa-tion, and high-quality sellers and honest buyers benefit from such a system. The results indicate that counter-ratings prompt buyers"}],"publication":"19. These so-called fake production costs only occurred when not given the time to mentally prepare the deceptive movement. In the current study, we investigated if extensive practice could reduce the cognitive costs of producing a pass with head fake. Twenty-four basketball novices participated in an experiment on five consecutive days. A visual cue prompted participants to play a pass with or without a head fake either to the left or right side. The cued action had to be executed after an interstimulus interval (ISI) of either 0 ms, 400 ms, 800 ms or 1200 ms, allowing for different movement preparation times. Results indicated higher response initiation times (ITs) and error rates (ERs) for passes with head fakes for the short preparation intervals (ISI 0 ms and 400 ms) on the first day but no difference for the longer preparation intervals (ISI 800 ms and 1200 ms). After only one day of practice, participants showed reduced fake production costs (for ISI 0 ms) and were even able to eliminate these cognitive costs when given time to mentally prepare the movement (for ISI 400 ms). Accordingly, physical practice can reduce the cognitive costs associated with head-fake generation. This finding is discussed against the background of the strengthening of stimulus response associations.
","lang":"eng"}],"related_material":{"link":[{"url":"https://osf.io/svjtz/files","relation":"research_data"}]},"main_file_link":[{"url":"https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00426-023-01885-x","open_access":"1"}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"doi":"10.1007/s00426-023-01885-x","title":"Practice reduces the costs of producing head fakes in basketball","year":"2024","author":[{"id":"52000","first_name":"Nils Tobias","orcid":"0000-0002-0236-7282","last_name":"Böer","full_name":"Böer, Nils Tobias"},{"full_name":"Weigelt, Matthias","last_name":"Weigelt","first_name":"Matthias","id":"36388"},{"full_name":"Schütz, Christoph","last_name":"Schütz","first_name":"Christoph"},{"id":"52931","last_name":"Güldenpenning","first_name":"Iris","orcid":"0000-0003-0549-5543","full_name":"Güldenpenning, Iris"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["0340-0727","1430-2772"]},"publication_status":"published","date_updated":"2026-05-03T11:16:46Z","article_type":"original","intvolume":" 88","oa":"1","file_date_updated":"2025-11-06T13:32:52Z","citation":{"ieee":"N. Using survey data on German small-and medium-sized firms, we find that the average perceived provision of public goods is not associated with the willingness to pay local business tax. Separating public goods into private-and business-related public goods, we find that the perception of public goods related to the private sphere of firms' decision-makers is associated with an increase in firms' willingness to pay local business tax by about 10%. However, public goods related to the business sphere show no similar association. Contradictory to the perceived provision of public goods, we find surprisingly no association between firms' willingness to pay local business tax and the actual provision of public goods. Trust in local governments' handling of tax revenue increases firms' willingness to pay local business tax significantly, with an effect size of about twice as large as for the perception of provided private-related public goods. These findings indicate that the handling of tax revenues exerts a more pronounced influence on firms' willingness to pay than the actual utilization of these revenues. Documenting tax revenue implications, we further show that the average willingness to pay local business tax within a local government is associated with a significant decrease in tax avoidance by about 10%. Our results inform local governments about how the provision of public goods and the building of trust can sustainably contribute to firms' willingness to pay local business tax. Thus, our results contribute to the understanding of how taxes can be efficiently collected and effectively used."}],"citation":{"short":"H. Giese, V. Using a hand-collected dataset of more than 7,500 tax employees from 348 European-listed multinationals, we identify two types of firm-level costs associated with tax complexity—tax employees, and tax risk. We find that firms locate more tax employees in countries with greater tax complexity. This association is particularly pronounced for complexity in tax procedures. We also find that multinationals operating in countries with high tax complexity are associated with higher tax risk. The incremental tax risk vanishes for firms that locate more tax employees in countries with highly complex tax procedures, while we find no risk reduction from additional tax employees in countries with complex tax rules. Our results reveal that multinationals eliminate 25 percent of overall tax complexity-related tax risk through targeted location of tax employees."}],"citation":{"mla":"Giese, Henning, et al. Tax Complexity and Tax Risk: The Role of Tax Employees. 2024, doi:10.2139/ssrn.4888151.","ama":"Giese H, Koch R, Sureth-Sloane C. Tax Complexity and Tax Risk: The Role of Tax Employees.; 2024. doi:10.2139/ssrn.4888151","bibtex":"@book{Giese_Koch_Sureth-Sloane_2024, series={TRR 266 Accounting for Transparency Working Paper Series No. 149}, title={Tax Complexity and Tax Risk: The Role of Tax Employees}, DOI={10.2139/ssrn.4888151}, author={Giese, Henning and Koch, Reinald and Sureth-Sloane, Caren}, year={2024}, collection={TRR 266 Accounting for Transparency Working Paper Series No. 149} }","apa":"Giese, H., Koch, R., & Sureth-Sloane, C. Bei Hochleistungs-Ultraschallanwendungen sind diese Komponenten erheblichen elektrischen und mechanischen Belastungen ausgesetzt, was zum Auftreten nichtlinearer Effekte führt. Fortschritte der Akustik - DAGA 2024, 2024, pp. 1117–1120.","bibtex":"@inproceedings{Friesen_Pasha_Schwengelbeck_Claes_Baumhögger_Henning_2024, title={Untersuchung piezoelektrischer Materialeigenschaften unter hydrostatischer Last}, booktitle={Fortschritte der Akustik - DAGA 2024}, author={Friesen, Olga and Pasha, Muhammad Ahsan and Schwengelbeck, Max and Claes, Leander and Baumhögger, Elmar and Henning, Bernd}, year={2024}, pages={1117–1120} }","ama":"Friesen O, Pasha MA, Schwengelbeck M, Claes L, Baumhögger E, Henning B.
