Many answer this question in the affirmative, but there is a growing discourse that is suspicious of the promises of explainable AI used to explain decisions towards users, considering it unfeasible, undesirable, and even potentially misleading. Could explainable AI be just a rhetorical foil? This paper proposes that, yes, explainable AI is a rhetorical technology but no, this does not necessarily make it undesirable. It starts by revisiting this debate according to the initial charge against rhetorics by Plato and Aristotle’s response, considering rhetoric pharmacologically, as not only a poison but also a cure for political life. It argues that, just as rhetoric was necessary to take care of the temporalities of public life, in court, the public event, and the assembly, so may explainable AI contribute to a rhetorical context. Yet, whether it does so is conditioned on the extent to which it cultivates the civic virtues relative to a respective context. The paper considers the examples of predictive policing, credit scoring, and prediction markets to argue about ideal states – civic virtues that may be cultivated in each appropriate context – and deviations that point at the risks of explainable AI to lead to domination, conformism, and political recalcitrance.
","lang":"eng"}],"file":[{"date_created":"2026-05-29T12:06:10Z","creator":"wreijers","success":1,"content_type":"application/pdf","file_id":"65731","date_updated":"2026-05-29T12:06:10Z","relation":"main_file","access_level":"closed","file_size":844081,"file_name":"2026_Reijers_XAI as a Rhetorical Technology.pdf"}],"date_created":"2026-05-29T12:04:50Z","type":"journal_article","title":"Explainable AI as a Rhetorical Technology: Promoting Civic Virtue in the Age of AI","year":"2026","author":[{"full_name":"Reijers, Wessel","first_name":"Wessel","last_name":"Reijers"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["0167-7411","1572-8749"]},"publication_status":"published","date_updated":"2026-05-29T12:07:55Z","article_type":"original","main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1","url":"https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11245-026-10451-0"}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"doi":"10.1007/s11245-026-10451-0"},{"date_updated":"2026-06-01T06:47:26Z","year":"2026","status":"public","title":"Preferences for Taxing Wealth and Income","author":[{"full_name":"Maiterth, Ralf","first_name":"Ralf","last_name":"Maiterth"},{"full_name":"Piper, Yuri","first_name":"Yuri","last_name":"Piper","id":"49955"},{"first_name":"Cornelius","last_name":"Schneider","full_name":"Schneider, Cornelius"}],"doi":"10.2139/ssrn.6832418","user_id":"96670","main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1"}],"_id":"65737","series_title":"TRR 266 Accounting for Transparency Working Paper Series No. 239","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"abstract":[{"text":"We examine German individuals' preferences for income and wealth taxation and, importantly, the interplay between these two tax instruments. While prior research often examines wealth tax preferences in isolation, actual tax systems consist of multiple interacting taxes. To capture this dynamic, we elicit preferred tax burdens in a large-scale online experiment with 2,702 participants randomly assigned to one of four treatment groups: respondents state either an unspecified overall tax burden, separate income and wealth tax burdens, an income tax burden only, or a wealth tax burden only. Our baseline estimates reveal average (marginal) tax rates of approximately 17.4% (18.9%) for income and 4.1% (2.3%) for wealth. We find that participants associate wealth with an ability-to-pay taxes: when a wealth tax is not explicitly available, preferred income tax rates are approximately 30% higher. However, when both instruments are available, participants do not treat them as substitutes. Instead, they appear to treat the two taxes as separate mental bins: the standalone income and wealth tax burdens are combined in a notably additive manner, resulting in a significantly higher overall tax burden. Further, respondents apply implicit exemptions for low levels of wealth and favor a wealth tax base focused primarily on financial assets and real estate other than the primary residence.","lang":"eng"}],"citation":{"mla":"Maiterth, Ralf, et al. Preferences for Taxing Wealth and Income. 2026, doi:10.2139/ssrn.6832418.","ama":"Maiterth R, Piper Y, Schneider C. Preferences for Taxing Wealth and Income.; 2026. doi:10.2139/ssrn.6832418","bibtex":"@book{Maiterth_Piper_Schneider_2026, series={TRR 266 Accounting for Transparency Working Paper Series No. 239}, title={Preferences for Taxing Wealth and Income}, DOI={10.2139/ssrn.6832418}, author={Maiterth, Ralf and Piper, Yuri and Schneider, Cornelius}, year={2026}, collection={TRR 266 Accounting for Transparency Working Paper Series No. 239} }","apa":"Maiterth, R., Piper, Y., & Schneider, C. In Germany, where 80 % of household energy goes to space heating and hot water, shifting to low-carbon solutions is crucial. Fossil-fuelled district heating networks can incorporate renewable energy via heat pumps, improving efficiency. Although heat pump design typically favours minimal temperature lifts, higher lifts can be economically viable with low electricity prices and abundant renewables. Adding thermal energy storage boosts operational flexibility. This study explores a flexible heat pump operation incorporating part load behaviour with a thermal energy storage in a German city’s district heating system to minimise costs and carbon dioxide emissions. Using a mixed-integer linear programming model, it examines the impact of temperature adjustments and storage on system efficiency. The results show that the integration of a heat pump in a district heating system reduces operating costs. Compared to a supply without a heat pump, with levelised cost of heating of 9.98 cent/kWhth and a fixed operating mode with costs between 9.96 cent/kWhth and 11.49 cent/kWhth, the flexible use results in lowest costs of 9.85 cent/kWhth, while also reducing overall CO2 emissions. Using a full factorial sensitivity analysis, the levelised cost of heating ranged between 9.15 cent/kWhth in the best case and 10.37 cent/kWhth in the worst case for the selected configuration.","lang":"eng"}],"date_created":"2026-06-03T06:34:27Z","department":[{"_id":"644"},{"_id":"534"}],"type":"journal_article","keyword":["Heat transition","Optimisation","Temperature flexibility","Decarbonisation","Multi energy"],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["0196-8904"]},"author":[{"full_name":"Rahlf, Henning Christoph","last_name":"Rahlf","orcid":"0009-0006-8106-2132","first_name":"Henning Christoph","id":"56955"},{"first_name":"Denis","last_name":"Divkovic","full_name":"Divkovic, Denis","id":"89059"},{"id":"90391","full_name":"Knorr, Lukas","orcid":"0009-0005-4727-7511","first_name":"Lukas","last_name":"Knorr"},{"id":"88614","full_name":"Schlosser, Florian","first_name":"Florian","last_name":"Schlosser"},{"first_name":"Henning","last_name":"Meschede","orcid":"0000-0002-1538-089X","full_name":"Meschede, Henning","id":"86954"}],"title":"Flexible operation strategies for heat pumps in district heating systems using dynamic electricity prices","year":"2026","intvolume":" 364","article_type":"original","date_updated":"2026-06-03T06:44:31Z","publication_status":"published","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1","url":"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0196890426006837"}],"article_number":"121714","doi":"10.1016/j.enconman.2026.121714"},{"status":"public","_id":"63838","publisher":"Elsevier BV","user_id":"56955","citation":{"mla":"Rahlf, Henning Christoph, et al. “Analysis of Bidirectional EV Charging Infrastructures within Industrial DC Grids.” Smart Energy, 100227, Elsevier BV, 2026, doi:10.1016/j.segy.2026.100227.","bibtex":"@article{Rahlf_Knorr_Althoff_Meschede_2026, title={Analysis of bidirectional EV charging infrastructures within industrial DC grids}, DOI={10.1016/j.segy.2026.100227}, number={100227}, journal={Smart Energy}, publisher={Elsevier BV}, author={Rahlf, Henning Christoph and Knorr, Lukas and Althoff, Simon and Meschede, Henning}, year={2026} }","ama":"Rahlf HC, Knorr L, Althoff S, Meschede H. In practical transducer applications, the relevant operating points are influenced by mechanical preload and heating, both of which give rise to changes in the elastic, dielectric, and piezoelectric material properties. Material parameters identified under idealised, unloaded conditions are therefore insufficient to represent piezoceramic material behaviour under realistic operating conditions. To overcome this limitation, experimental setups are developed that enable the measurement of electrical impedance spectra under controlled thermal and mechanical conditions. The acquired impedance data are used in an inverse identification procedure, in which the behaviour of a finite element forward model is iteratively fitted to the measurements using a block coordinate descent optimisation strategy guided by a sensitivity analysis. This yields effective linear material parameters as a function of temperature and mechanical stress at varying operating points. The identified temperature-dependent parameters, for instance, can be employed in a coupled thermo-electromechanical simulation framework to predict the temperature-dependent material behaviour during operation. The linear identification based on varying operation points provides an initial approximation of the nonlinear material response, establishing a basis for the development of corresponding nonlinear material models."}],"publication":"tm - Technisches Messen","department":[{"_id":"49"}],"type":"journal_article","keyword":["tet_topic_piezo"],"date_created":"2026-06-08T05:44:09Z","publication_status":"published","date_updated":"2026-06-08T17:54:45Z","publication_identifier":{"issn":["0171-8096","2196-7113"]},"author":[{"orcid":"0009-0007-5598-9484","last_name":"Friesen","first_name":"Olga","full_name":"Friesen, Olga","id":"44026"},{"full_name":"Claes, Leander","orcid":"0000-0002-4393-268X","first_name":"Leander","last_name":"Claes","id":"11829"},{"full_name":"Hölscher, Jonas","first_name":"Jonas","last_name":"Hölscher","id":"73952"},{"full_name":"Henning, Bernd","last_name":"Henning","first_name":"Bernd","id":"213"},{"full_name":"Scheidemann, Claus","last_name":"Scheidemann","first_name":"Claus","id":"38259"},{"first_name":"Tobias","last_name":"Hemsel","full_name":"Hemsel, Tobias","id":"210"},{"last_name":"Kuess","first_name":"Raphael","full_name":"Kuess, Raphael"},{"last_name":"Walther","first_name":"Andrea","full_name":"Walther, Andrea"},{"last_name":"Spieker","first_name":"Carsten","full_name":"Spieker, Carsten","id":"67587"},{"full_name":"Förstner, Jens","orcid":"0000-0001-7059-9862","last_name":"Förstner","first_name":"Jens","id":"158"}],"year":"2026","title":"Measurement of multiphysical material parameters of piezoceramic components for high-power ultrasonic applications","doi":"10.1515/teme-2026-0042","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1"}]},{"publication":"Procedia CIRP","department":[{"_id":"152"}],"type":"journal_article","date_created":"2026-06-10T05:01:47Z","intvolume":" 140","date_updated":"2026-06-10T05:03:31Z","publication_status":"published","publication_identifier":{"issn":["2212-8271"]},"author":[{"full_name":"Gräßler, Iris","orcid":"0000-0001-5765-971X","last_name":"Gräßler","first_name":"Iris","id":"47565"},{"id":"67999","full_name":"Rarbach, Sven","last_name":"Rarbach","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0602-9923","first_name":"Sven"},{"full_name":"Pottebaum, Jens","orcid":"http://orcid.org/0000-0001-8778-2989","first_name":"Jens","last_name":"Pottebaum","id":"405"},{"first_name":"Florian","last_name":"Luessen","full_name":"Luessen, Florian"},{"first_name":"Joerg","last_name":"Hoffmann","full_name":"Hoffmann, Joerg"}],"title":"Metadata Model for Engineering of Sustainable Products in Value Creation Networks","year":"2026","doi":"10.1016/j.procir.2026.05.099","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"main_file_link":[{"url":"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2212827126006013/pdf?md5=889a9eaf4f695e80c5f18d346c50f663&pid=1-s2.0-S2212827126006013-main.pdf","open_access":"1"}],"quality_controlled":"1","citation":{"mla":"Gräßler, Iris, et al. “Metadata Model for Engineering of Sustainable Products in Value Creation Networks.” Procedia CIRP, vol. 140, Elsevier BV, 2026, pp. 587–92, doi:10.1016/j.procir.2026.05.099.","ama":"Gräßler I, Rarbach S, Pottebaum J, Luessen F, Hoffmann J. Nearly two decades ago, the service system concept was introduced as a foundational abstraction in service research, drawing on ideas from the service-dominant logic (S-D logic) of marketing. Despite its widespread adoption in service research, particularly in the IS discipline, the service system concept lacks a solid theoretical foundation. This has resulted in conceptual ambiguity and overlap with related constructs, such as service ecosystems. Moreover, it has largely remained a static analytical lens, insufficiently capturing dynamic service phenomena, including value co-creation and co-destruction, as well as the emergence of institutional arrangements. To address these limitations, we propose Luhmann’s systems theory (LST) as a robust framework for conceptualizing service systems as autopoietic (self-creating) systems, in which communication serves as the fundamental mechanism that drives value co-creation. We derive five theoretical propositions from this re-conceptualization that clarify conceptual ambiguity and allow researchers to explore dynamic service phenomena in greater depth. Given LST’s general approach, our conceptualization provides a theoretically grounded, interdisciplinary foundation for advancing service research.","lang":"eng"}],"date_created":"2026-04-21T13:13:02Z","file":[{"date_updated":"2026-04-21T13:14:30Z","relation":"main_file","access_level":"closed","file_size":2793039,"file_name":"Service is Communication - EM Paper.pdf","content_type":"application/pdf","success":1,"file_id":"65477","creator":"dabe","date_created":"2026-04-21T13:14:30Z"}],"department":[{"_id":"195"},{"_id":"534"}],"keyword":["Service system","Service ecosystem","Systems theory","Service research"],"type":"journal_article"},{"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"main_file_link":[{"url":"https://www.nature.com/articles/s41534-026-01250-x.pdf","open_access":"1"}],"article_number":"89","doi":"10.1038/s41534-026-01250-x","author":[{"id":"73665","first_name":"Jan-Lucas","orcid":"0009-0008-6524-7684","last_name":"Eickmann","full_name":"Eickmann, Jan-Lucas"},{"id":"36389","full_name":"Luo, Kai-Hong","orcid":"0000-0003-1008-4976","first_name":"Kai-Hong","last_name":"Luo"},{"full_name":"Roiz, Mikhail","first_name":"Mikhail","last_name":"Roiz","id":"114114"},{"full_name":"Lammers, Jonas","first_name":"Jonas","last_name":"Lammers"},{"full_name":"Atzeni, Simone","last_name":"Atzeni","first_name":"Simone","id":"98338"},{"full_name":"Pandey, Cheeranjiv","last_name":"Pandey","first_name":"Cheeranjiv"},{"first_name":"Florian","last_name":"Lütkewitte","full_name":"Lütkewitte, Florian"},{"last_name":"Shirazi","first_name":"Reza G.","full_name":"Shirazi, Reza G."},{"last_name":"Schlue","first_name":"Fabian","full_name":"Schlue, Fabian","id":"63579"},{"last_name":"Brecht","first_name":"Benjamin","orcid":"0000-0003-4140-0556 ","full_name":"Brecht, Benjamin","id":"27150"},{"full_name":"Rybkin, Vladimir V.","first_name":"Vladimir V.","last_name":"Rybkin"},{"id":"42777","full_name":"Stefszky, Michael","last_name":"Stefszky","first_name":"Michael"},{"first_name":"Christine","last_name":"Silberhorn","full_name":"Silberhorn, Christine","id":"26263"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["2056-6387"]},"title":"Bridging chemistry and Gaussian boson sampling: a photonic hierarchy of approximations for molecular vibronic spectra","year":"2026","intvolume":" 12","article_type":"original","date_updated":"2026-06-12T08:28:02Z","publication_status":"published","date_created":"2026-06-12T08:14:35Z","department":[{"_id":"288"},{"_id":"623"},{"_id":"15"}],"type":"journal_article","publication":"npj Quantum Information","issue":"1","abstract":[{"text":"Simulating vibronic spectra is a central task in physical chemistry, offering insight into important properties of molecules. Recently, it has been experimentally demonstrated that photonic platforms based on Gaussian boson sampling (GBS) are capable of performing these simulations. However, whether an actual GBS approach is required depends on the molecule under investigation. To develop a better understanding on the requirements for simulating vibronic spectra, we explore connections between theoretical approximations in physical chemistry and their photonic counterparts. Mapping these approximations into photonics, we show that for certain molecules the GBS approach is unnecessary. We place special emphasis on the linear coupling approximation, which in photonics corresponds to sampling from multiple coherent states. By implementing this approach in experiments, we demonstrate improved similarities over previously reported GBS results for formic acid and identify the particular attributes that a molecule must exhibit for this, and other approximations, to be valid. These results highlight the importance in forming deeper connections between traditional methods and photonic approaches.","lang":"eng"}],"related_material":{"link":[{"url":"https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.18969354","relation":"research_data"}]},"publisher":"Springer Science and Business Media LLC","_id":"65847","volume":12,"user_id":"73665","status":"public","oa":"1","citation":{"ama":"Eickmann J-L, Luo K-H, Roiz M, et al. This study examines the role of\r\nproblem-solving heuristics among 73 sixth-grade students in a German secondary\r\nschool (Gesamtschule). Specifically, we focus on the empirical relationship between\r\nthe occurrence of heuristics, their suitability, and application, as well as their contribution\r\nto problem-solving success. To this end, we developed a heuristic training that\r\nintroduced strategy keys (heuristic aid cards) accompanied by explanatory videos. By\r\nleveraging variations in the successful application of the heuristics between students\r\nand across multiple sessions (73 students in 4 training situations and 3 problems\r\nin a final test), we discover from regression models with student and task-fixed effects\r\nthat a successful use of heuristics (i.e., an heuristic occurred, that heuristic had\r\na high suitability regarding the problem, and it was applied correctly) leads to more\r\nsuccessful mathematical problem solving. Regarding the underlying mechanism, we\r\nfind that all dimensions of heuristic use (occurrence, suitability, and application\r\nof heuristics) are positively related to problem-solving success. When comparing\r\nthe predictive capacity of all three aspects, we identified the correct application of\r\nheuristics as particularly conducive for better problem-solving success. In comparing\r\nthe group of students with high to those with low initial math competence, we find no significant differences in the relationship between heuristic use and problemsolving\r\nsuccess across achievement groups.
