text: Subwavelength dielectric resonators assembled into metasurfaces have become
a versatile tool for miniaturizing optical components approaching the nanoscale.
An important class of metasurface functionalities is associated with asymmetry
in both the generation and transmission of light with respect to reversals of
the positions of emitters and receivers. The nonlinear light–matter interaction
in metasurfaces offers a promising pathway towards miniaturization of the asymmetric
control of light. Here we demonstrate asymmetric parametric generation of light
in nonlinear metasurfaces. We assemble dissimilar nonlinear dielectric resonators
into translucent metasurfaces that produce images in the visible spectral range
on being illuminated by infrared radiation. By design, the metasurfaces produce
different and completely independent images for the reversed direction of illumination,
that is, when the positions of the infrared emitter and the visible light receiver
are exchanged. Nonlinearity-enabled asymmetric control of light by subwavelength
resonators paves the way towards novel nanophotonic components via dense integration
of large quantities of nonlinear resonators into compact metasurface designs.

text: The free exciton transition (near-band-edge emission, NBE) of ZnO at ≈388
nm can be strongly enhanced and even stimulated by an underlying photonic structure.
1D Photonic crystals, so-called distributed Bragg reflectors, are utilized to
suppress the deep-level emission of ZnO (DLE, ≈500–530 nm). The reflector stacks
are fabricated in a layer-by-layer procedure by wet-chemical synthesis. They consist
of low-ε porous SiO2 layers and high-ε TiO2 layers. Varying the thickness of the
SiO2 layers allows tuning the optical bandgap in a wide range between ≈420 and
800 nm. A ZnO layer is deposited on top of the reflector stacks by sol–gel synthesis.
The spontaneous photoluminescence (PL) emission of the ZnO film is modulated by
the photonic structure. When the optical bandgap of the reflector is in resonance
with the deep-level emission of ZnO (DLE, ≈500–530 nm), then this defect-related
emission mode is suppressed. Strong NBE emission is observed even when the ZnO
layer does not show any NBE emission (due to low crystallinity) in the absence
of the photonic structure. With this cost-efficient synthesis method, emitters
for, e.g., luminescent gas sensors can be fabricated.

text: "We review recent results on the existence of ground states for the\r\ninfrared-critical
spin boson model, which describes the interaction of a\r\nmassless bosonic field
with a two-state quantum system. Explicitly, we derive a\r\ncritical coupling
$\\lambda_{\\mathsf c}>0$ such that the spin boson model\r\nexhibits a ground
state for coupling constants $\\lambda$ with\r\n$|\\lambda|<\\lambda_{\\mathsf
c}$. The proof combines a Feynman-Kac-Nelson\r\nformula for the spin boson model
with external magnetic field, a 1D-Ising model\r\ncorrelation bound and a compactness
argument in Fock space. Elaborating on the\r\nconnection to a long-range 1D-Ising
model, we briefly discuss the conjecture\r\nthat the spin boson model does not
have a ground state at large coupling. This\r\nnote is based on joint work with
    David Hasler and Oliver Siebert."

text: We consider the spin boson model with external magnetic field. We prove a
path integral formula for the heat kernel, known as Feynman–Kac–Nelson (FKN) formula.
We use this path integral representation to express the ground state energy as
a stochastic integral. Based on this connection, we determine the expansion coefficients
of the ground state energy with respect to the magnetic field strength and express
them in terms of correlation functions of a continuous Ising model. From a recently
proven correlation inequality, we can then deduce that the second order derivative
is finite. As an application, we show existence of ground states in infrared-singular
    situations.

text: Intelligent agents interacting with humans through conversation (such as a
robot, embodied conversational agent, or chatbot) need to receive feedback from
the human to make sure that its communicative acts have the intended consequences.
At the same time, the human interacting with the agent will also seek feedback,
in order to ensure that her communicative acts have the intended consequences.
In this review article, we give an overview of past and current research on how
intelligent agents should be able to both give meaningful feedback toward humans,
as well as understanding feedback given by the users. The review covers feedback
across different modalities (e.g., speech, head gestures, gaze, and facial expression),
different forms of feedback (e.g., backchannels, clarification requests), and
models for allowing the agent to assess the user's level of understanding and
adapt its behavior accordingly. Finally, we analyse some shortcomings of current
approaches to modeling feedback, and identify important directions for future
    research.

achieved by applying the +U approach to the oxygen 2p orbitals. We find three
principal configurations of hole polarons: (i) self-trapped holes localized at
displaced regular oxygen atoms and (ii) two other configurations bound to a lithium
vacancy either at a threefold coordinated oxygen atom above or at a two-fold coordinated
oxygen atom below the defect. The latter is the most stable and is in excellent
quantitative agreement with measured g factors from electron paramagnetic resonance.
Due to the absence of mid-gap states, none of these hole polarons can explain
the broad optical absorption centered between 2.5 and 2.8 eV that is observed
in transient absorption spectroscopy, but such states appear if a free electron
polaron is trapped at the same lithium vacancy as the bound hole polaron, resulting
in an exciton polaron. The dielectric function calculated by solving the Bethe–Salpeter
equation indeed yields an optical peak at 2.6 eV in agreement with the two-photon
experiments. The coexistence of hole and exciton polarons, which are simultaneously
created in optical excitations, thus satisfactorily explains the reported experimental
    data.'

text: The three-dimensional (3D) distribution of individual atoms on the surface
of catalyst nanoparticles plays a vital role in their activity and stability.
Optimising the performance of electrocatalysts requires atomic-scale information,
but it is difficult to obtain. Here, we use atom probe tomography to elucidate
the 3D structure of 10 nm sized Co2FeO4 and CoFe2O4 nanoparticles during oxygen
evolution reaction (OER). We reveal nanoscale spinodal decomposition in pristine
Co2FeO4. The interfaces of Co-rich and Fe-rich nanodomains of Co2FeO4 become trapping
sites for hydroxyl groups, contributing to a higher OER activity compared to that
of CoFe2O4. However, the activity of Co2FeO4 drops considerably due to concurrent
irreversible transformation towards CoIVO2 and pronounced Fe dissolution. In contrast,
there is negligible elemental redistribution for CoFe2O4 after OER, except for
surface structural transformation towards (FeIII, CoIII)2O3. Overall, our study
provides a unique 3D compositional distribution of mixed Co-Fe spinel oxides,
which gives atomic-scale insights into active sites and the deactivation of electrocatalysts
    during OER.

text: Nanostructured manganese oxides have a rich variety of morphologies and crystal
phases which can undergo transformations during synthesis and application. Although
these structural features are crucial for their performance, the mechanisms behind
such transitions are not well understood. Herein, we describe the mechanism of
transformation from layered 2D δ-MnO2 nanosheets to the scarcely reported γ-MnO2
nanocone morphology. Despite the common purpose of introducing Fe dopants to enhance
the conductivity of layered manganese oxides, the Fe galvanic exchange reaction
was found responsible for such coupled phase/morphology transition. Electrochemical
characterization confirmed a distinct electrochemical behaviour of the nanocones,
emphasizing the need to unravel the mechanism of 2D MnO2 transformation. Such
mechanistic insights were gained by systematic and rigorous electron microscopy
studies. The effect of the local chemical composition was determined by energy
dispersive X-ray spectroscopy while electron energy loss spectroscopy unravelled
the key influence of the oxidation state of Mn ions within nanosheets and nanocones.
We propose and demonstrate a Mn2+-mediated oxidative mechanism of coupled morphology/phase
transformation subjected to the equilibrium of Fe and Mn ions during galvanic
exchange reaction. These findings contribute to the understanding of the growth
and morphology/phase transformations of manganese oxide nanostructures, providing
insights for the rational design of nanomaterials.

  text:
Abstract
Many critical codebases are written
in C, and most of them use preprocessor directives to encode variability, effectively
encoding software product lines. These preprocessor directives, however, challenge
any static code analysis. SPLlift, a previously presented approach for analyzing
software product lines, is limited to Java programs that use a rather simple feature
encoding and to analysis problems with a finite and ideally small domain. Other
approaches that allow the analysis of real-world C software product lines use
special-purpose analyses, preventing the reuse of existing analysis infrastructures
and ignoring the progress made by the static analysis community. This work presents
VarAlyzer, a novel static analysis approach for software product
lines. VarAlyzer first transforms preprocessor constructs to
plain C while preserving their variability and semantics. It then solves any given
distributive analysis problem on transformed product lines in a variability-aware
manner. VarAlyzer ’s analysis results are annotated with feature
constraints that encode in which configurations each result holds. Our experiments
with 95 compilation units of OpenSSL show that applying VarAlyzer
enables one to conduct inter-procedural, flow-, field- and context-sensitive data-flow
analyses on entire product lines for the first time, outperforming the product-based
    approach for highly-configurable systems.
