text: 'Email communication is encumbered with a mass of email messages which their
recipients have neither requested nor require. Even worse, the impacts of these
messages are far from being simply an annoyance, as they also involve economic
damage. This manuscript examines the resource ?email addresses?, which is vital
for any potential bulk mailer and spammer. Both a methodology and a honeypot conceptualization
for implementing an empirical analysis of the usage of email addresses placed
on the Internet are proposed here. Their objective is to assess, on a quantitative
basis, the extent of the current harassment and its development over time. This
?framework? is intended to be extensible to measuring the effectiveness of address-obscuring
techniques. The implementation of a pilot honeypot is described, which led to
key findings, some of them being: (1) Web placements attract more than two-thirds
(70\%) of all honeypot spam emails, followed by newsgroup placements (28.6\%)
and newsletter subscriptions (1.4\%), (2) the proportions of spam relating to
the email addresses? top-level domain can be statistically assumed to be uniformly
distributed, (3) More than 43\% of addresses on the web have been abused, whereas
about 27\% was the case for addresses on newsgroups and only about 4\% was the
case for addresses used for a newsletter subscription, (4) Regarding the development
of email addresses? attractiveness for spammers over time, the service ?web sites?
features a negative linear relationship, whereas the service ?Usenet? hows a negative
exponential relationship. (5) Only 1.54\% of the spam emails showed an interrelation
between the topic of the spam email and that of the location where the recipient?s
address was placed, so that spammers are assumed to send their emails in a ?context
insensitive? manner. The results of the empirical analysis motivate the need for
the protection of email addresses through obscuration. We analyze this need by
formulating requirements for address obscuring techniques and we reveal to which
extent today?s most relevant approaches fulfill these requirements.'

text: 'In this paper we present a novel channel impulse response estimation technique
for block-oriented OFDM transmission based on combining estimators: the estimates
provided by a Kalman filter operating in the time domain and a Wiener filter in
the frequency domain are optimally combined by taking into account their estimated
error covariances. The resulting estimator turns out to be identical to the MAP
estimator of correlated jointly Gaussian mean vectors. Different variants of the
proposed scheme are experimentally investigated in an EEEE 802.11a-like system
setup. They compare favourably with known approaches from the literature resulting
in reduced mean square estimation error and bit error rate. Further, robustness
    and complexity issues are discussed'

text: In this paper, we propose a novel similarity measure to be used for localizing
mobile terminals by comparing measured signal power levels with a database of
predictions. The proposed measure provides the possibility to incorporate inherent
information about signal power level measurements requested by the serving base
station but not reported by the mobile terminal. Increased positioning accuracy
was observed both in simulations and with real field data

text: In this paper, we experimentally evaluate algorithms for velocity estimation
of a GSM 900 mobile terminal which are based on the analysis of the statistical
properties of the fast fading process. It is shown how theses statistics can be
obtained from the training sequences present in downlink transmission bursts without
establishing an active connection. Realistic simulations of a GSM channel according
to the COST 207 channel models have been conducted. These models incorporate effects
like multipath propagation, fading, cochannel interference and additive noise.
It is shown that velocity estimation by searching for the maximum slope of the
power density spectrum of the fast fading performs best.

text: Maximizing the output signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of a sensor array in the
presence of spatially colored noise leads to a generalized eigenvalue problem.
While this approach has extensively been employed in narrowband (antenna) array
beamforming, it is typically not used for broadband (microphone) array beamforming
due to the uncontrolled amount of speech distortion introduced by a narrowband
SNR criterion. In this paper, we show how the distortion of the desired signal
can be controlled by a single-channel post-filter, resulting in a performance
comparable to the generalized minimum variance distortionless response beamformer,
where arbitrary transfer functions relate the source and the microphones. Results
are given both for directional and diffuse noise. A novel gradient ascent adaptation
algorithm is presented, and its good convergence properties are experimentally
revealed by comparison with alternatives from the literature. A key feature of
the proposed beamformer is that it operates blindly, i.e., it neither requires
knowledge about the array geometry nor an explicit estimation of the transfer
functions from source to sensors or the direction-of-arrival.

text: 'Visual backward masking is frequently used to study the temporal dynamics
of visual perception. These dynamics may include the temporal features of conscious
percepts, as suggested, for instance, by the asynchronous-updating model (Neumann,
1982) and perceptual-retouch theory (Bachmann, 1994). These models predict that
the perceptual latency of a visual backward mask is shorter than that of a like
reference stimulus that was not preceded by a masked stimulus. The prediction
has been confirmed by studies using temporal-order judgments: For certain asynchronies
between mask and reference stimulus, temporal-order reversals are quite frequent
(e.g. Scharlau, & Neumann, 2003a). However, it may be argued that these reversals
were due to a response bias in favour of the mask rather than true temporal-perceptual
effects. I introduce two measures for assessing latency effects that (1) are not
prone to such a response bias, (2) allow to quantify the latency gain, and (3)

text: 'The Fehrer-Raab effect (simple reaction time is unaffected by metacontrast
masking of the test stimulus) seems to imply that a stimulus can trigger a voluntary
reaction without reaching a conscious representation. However, it is also possible
that the mask triggers the reaction, and that the masked test stimulus causes
a focussing of attention from which processing of the mask profits, thus reaching
conscious representation earlier. This is predicted by the Weather Station Model
of visual masking. Three experiments tested this explanation. Experiment 1 showed
that the masked test stimulus caused a temporal shift of the mask. Experiment
2 showed that the reaction in the Fehrer-Raab effect was not exclusively triggered
by a conscious representation of the test stimulus: the mask was involved in evoking
the reaction. Experiment 3 again revealed a temporal shift of the mask. However,
the shift was only about half as large as the Fehrer-Raab effect. The psychometric

text: The U-shaped metacontrast function may result from the superimposition of
two monotonic components which reflect the effects of mechanisms similar to the
peripheral and central processes suggested for backward pattern masking by Turvey
(Psychol Rev 80:1-52, 1973). In an experiment using the disc-ring paradigm, it
was demonstrated that the decreasing and increasing branches of the metacontrast
function are differently affected by the exposure duration of the mask and a task-irrelevant
stimulus (distractor) appearing in the contralateral visual hemifield. The phenomenal
representation of masking is different for the two parts of the curve. It is suggested
that masking in the second part of the masking function, but not in the first,
is related to the control of visual attention. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016

text: The present paper reviews recent research on perceptual latency priming (PLP).
PLP is the relative latency advantage--earlier perception--of a visual stimulus
that is preceded by another, masked stimulus at its location. The first stimulus
attracts attention which accelerates perception of the second stimulus. This facilitation
arises even if the first stimulus is visually backward-masked by the second one.
The paper summarises research on temporal and spatial properties of PLP and the
question whether intentions mediate shifts of attention to external events. Possible
sources of PLP besides visuo-spatial attention are discussed. Finally, I give
a review of feedforward and reentrant models of PLP and compare them to the empirical
evidence. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)

text: 'The fact that there is a specific age marking the emergence of adulthood
in the United States has been well documented. The starting point for the studies
included in this special issue is the assumption that the same can be said for
European countries. Thus, a comparison of characteristics of emerging adulthood
between different European countries was performed. In this special issue, contributions
of scholars from five different European countries are taken as representative
of different regions: Spain, Italy, Finland, Germany, and the Czech Republic.
The efforts of the research are twofold. The first is to look at how the traditional
markers of adulthood have changed and how the concept of adulthood is seen in
the different countries. The second is to highlight the influence that the entrance
into the working world and romantic partnership have on emerging adults and to
detect the impact of the timing of entering adulthood on identity achievement.
The results are presented here as different pathways that emerging adults follow
to reach the same goal of mature adulthood.'
