text: We present a data acquisition and visualization pipeline that allows experts
to monitor additive manufacturing processes, in particular laser metal deposition
with wire (LMD-w) processes, in immersive virtual reality. Our virtual environment
consists of a digital shadow of the LMD-w production site enriched with additional
measurement data shown on both static as well as handheld virtual displays. Users
can explore the production site by enhanced teleportation capabilities that enable
them to change their scale as well as their elevation above the ground plane.
In an exploratory user study with 22 participants, we demonstrate that our system
is generally suitable for the supervision of LMD-w processes while generating
low task load and cybersickness. Therefore, it serves as a first promising step
towards the successful application of virtual reality technology in the comparatively
    young field of additive manufacturing.

  text:
Welchen Zusammenhang haben Kommunikation, Lehre und Wissenschaft?
Die Autor*innen denken Ludwig Hubers Idee von Wissenschaftsdidaktik als Analyse
der Kommunikation von Wissenschaften weiter. In deskriptiv-kritischer Absicht
Selbstreflexion ihrer Kommunikation weiterzuentwickeln. Beteiligte Disziplinen
sind Biologie, Chemie, Erziehungswissenschaft, Ethik, Geographie, Geschichtswissenschaft,
Literaturwissenschaft, Mathematik, Medizin, Physik, Psychologie und Volkswirtschaftslehre.

  text:
Abstract
To investigate the point where inappropriate
defensive movements can no longer be inhibited and to validate suitable stimulus
    material for constructing a basketball-specific anticipation-response-inhibition
task, two experiments were conducted. In Experiment 1, participants without basketball
expertise (N = 25) watched a video of a basketball jump shot and were asked to
release the space bar at the point when the ball leaves the player's fingertips
(go-trials). In 25% of all trials, the video was stopped prematurely and participants
    should withhold their finger-lift response (stop-trials). A staircase-tracking
algorithm was used to adjust the point-in-time when the jump shot was stopped
in a way that participants’ inhibition rate was at 50% (reflecting the so called
“point-of-no-return”, PNR). In Experiment 2, the stimulus material was adapted
so that stop-trials simulated a pump fake. The PNR in Experiment 1 was located
187 ms and in Experiment 2 177 ms before the point of ball release. Precision
performance benefit from practice across blocks and participants delayed their
responses after stop-trials in a subsequent go-trial, which reflects strategic
post-stop-trial adjustments. Based on the comparable results of previous studies,
the given stimulus material is suitable for investigating response inhibition
    skills in dynamic sport-specific environments.

text: Dialects introduce syntactic and lexical variations in language that occur
in regional or social groups. Most NLP methods are not sensitive to such variations.
This may lead to unfair behavior of the methods, conveying negative bias towards
dialect speakers. While previous work has studied dialect-related fairness for
aspects like hate speech, other aspects of biased language, such as lewdness,
remain fully unexplored. To fill this gap, we investigate performance disparities
between dialects in the detection of five aspects of biased language and how to
mitigate them. To alleviate bias, we present a multitask learning approach that
models dialect language as an auxiliary task to incorporate syntactic and lexical
variations. In our experiments with African-American English dialect, we provide
empirical evidence that complementing common learning approaches with dialect
modeling improves their fairness. Furthermore, the results suggest that multitask
learning achieves state-of-the-art performance and helps to detect properties
    of biased language more reliably.

text: "Different conflicting optimization criteria arise naturally in various Deep\r\nLearning
scenarios. These can address different main tasks (i.e., in the\r\nsetting of
Multi-Task Learning), but also main and secondary tasks such as loss\r\nminimization
versus sparsity. The usual approach is a simple weighting of the\r\ncriteria,
which formally only works in the convex setting. In this paper, we\r\npresent
    a Multi-Objective Optimization algorithm using a modified Weighted\r\nChebyshev
scalarization for training Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) with respect\r\nto several
tasks. By employing this scalarization technique, the algorithm can\r\nidentify
all optimal solutions of the original problem while reducing its\r\ncomplexity
to a sequence of single-objective problems. The simplified problems\r\nare then
solved using an Augmented Lagrangian method, enabling the use of\r\npopular optimization
techniques such as Adam and Stochastic Gradient Descent,\r\nwhile efficaciously
handling constraints. Our work aims to address the\r\n(economical and also ecological)
sustainability issue of DNN models, with a\r\nparticular focus on Deep Multi-Task
models, which are typically designed with a\r\nvery large number of weights to
perform equally well on multiple tasks. Through\r\nexperiments conducted on two
Machine Learning datasets, we demonstrate the\r\npossibility of adaptively sparsifying
the model during training without\r\nsignificantly impacting its performance,
if we are willing to apply\r\ntask-specific adaptations to the network weights.

text: "This paper presents the CHiME-8 DASR challenge which carries on from the\r\nprevious
edition CHiME-7 DASR (C7DASR) and the past CHiME-6 challenge. It\r\nfocuses on
joint multi-channel distant speech recognition (DASR) and\r\ndiarization with
one or more, possibly heterogeneous, devices. The main goal is\r\nto spur research
towards meeting transcription approaches that can generalize\r\nacross arbitrary
number of speakers, diverse settings (formal vs. informal\r\nconversations), meeting
duration, wide-variety of acoustic scenarios and\r\ndifferent recording configurations.
Novelties with respect to C7DASR include:\r\ni) the addition of NOTSOFAR-1, an
additional office/corporate meeting scenario,\r\nii) a manually corrected Mixer
6 development set, iii) a new track in which we\r\nallow the use of large-language
models (LLM) iv) a jury award mechanism to\r\nencourage participants to explore
also more practical and innovative solutions.\r\nTo lower the entry barrier for
participants, we provide a standalone toolkit\r\nfor downloading and preparing
such datasets as well as performing text\r\nnormalization and scoring their submissions.
Furthermore, this year we also\r\nprovide two baseline systems, one directly inherited
from C7DASR and based on\r\nESPnet and another one developed on NeMo and based
on NeMo team submission in\r\nlast year C7DASR. Baseline system results suggest
that the addition of the\r\nNOTSOFAR-1 scenario significantly increases the task's
difficulty due to its\r\nhigh number of speakers and very short duration."

  text: "
article presents a qualification format for multi-professional actors in the educational
context on the developmental use of 'Selbstinszenierungspraktiken' (which means
    a combination of practices for self-awareness, self-realisation and self-acceptance
in a process which we are developing in our project). The concept and development
of the further education format is located within the framework of a research
and development project for young people with wide-ranging needs in pre-vocational
education units at the transition from school to work. They will be supported
in recognizing, documenting and showing their strengths through open and creative
self-expression and survey formats, as well as being strengthened for the transition
from school to work.\r\nFirst, we present the project framework and clarify the
approach by a theoretical grounding of ‚Selbstinszenierung‘ (similar to a combination
of self-awareness, self-realisation and self-acceptance) as well as its potentials
in the context of inclusive vocational education by strengthening the target group.
The developed framework provides a basis for the adaptation of the concept to
a specific location or educational programme and highlights challenges and qualification
needs for actors in the educational context. We present the conceptual basis,
the methodological and content-related design of the collegial training approach
on the developmental use of 'Selbstinszenierungspraktiken'. We address the interaction
of innovative development, clarification of roles and competence development
of actors in the educational context. Finally, we discuss the conceptual developments
and the implementation and transfer approach.
"

text: In today's digital world, data-driven digital artefacts pose challenges for
education, as many students lack an understanding of data and feel powerless when
interacting with them. This article addresses these challenges and introduces
the data awareness framework. It focuses on understanding data-driven technologies
and reflecting on the role of data in everyday life. The paper also presents an
empirical study on young school students' data awareness. The study involves a
teaching unit on data awareness framed by a pretest-posttest design using a questionnaire
on students' awareness and understanding of and reflection on data practices of
data-driven digital artefacts. The study's findings indicate that the data awareness
framework supports students in understanding data practices of data-driven digital
artefacts. The findings also suggest that the framework encourages students to
reflect on these data practices and think about their daily behaviour. Students
learn a model about interactions with data-driven digital artefacts and use it
to analyse data-driven applications. This approach appears to enable students
to understand these artefacts from everyday life and reflect on these interactions.
The work contributes to research on data and AI literacies and suggests a way
to support students in developing self-determination and agency during interactions
    with data-driven digital artefacts.

text: "Many industrialized countries have recognized the need to mitigate energy
cost increases faced by low-income households by fostering the adoption of energy-efficient
technologies. How to meet this need is an open question, but “behavioral insights”
are likely components of future policy designs. Applying well-established behavioral
insights to low-income house- holds raises questions of transportability as they
are typically underrepresented in the existing evidence base. We illustrate this
problem by conducting a randomized field experiment on scalable, low-cost design
elements to improve program take-up in one of the world’s largest en- ergy efficiency
assistance programs. Observing investment decisions of over 1,800 low-income households
in Germany’s “Refrigerator Replacement Program”, we find that the transportabil-
ity problem is real and consequential: First, the most effective policy design
would not have been chosen based on existing behavioral insights. Second, design
elements favored by these insights either prove ineffective or even backfire,
violating ‘do no harm’ principles of policy advice. Systematic testing remains
crucial for addressing the transportability problem, partic- ularly for policies
    targeting vulnerable groups.\r\n"

text: "Documents are largely stored and shared digitally. Yet, digital documents
are still commonly signed using (copies of) handwritten signatures, which are
sensitive to fraud. Though secure, cryptography-based signature solutions exist,
they are hardly used due to usability issues. This paper proposes to use digital
identity wallets for securely and intuitively signing digital documents with verified
personal data. Using expert feedback, we implemented this vision in an interactive
prototype. The prototype was assessed in a moderated usability test (\U0001D441
    = 15) and a subsequent unmoderated remote\r\nusability test (\U0001D441 = 99).
While participants generally expressed satisfaction with the system, they also
misunderstood how to interpret the signature information displayed by the prototype.
Specifically, signed documents were also trusted when the document was signed
with irrelevant personal data of the signer. We conclude that such unwarranted
trust forms a threat to usable digital signatures and requires attention by the
    usable security community."

  text:
Abstract
Most FPGA boards in the HPC domain
are well-suited for parallel scaling because of the direct integration of versatile
and high-throughput network ports. However, the utilization of their network capabilities is
often challenging and error-prone because the whole network stack and communication
patterns have to be implemented and managed on the FPGAs. Also, this approach
conceptually involves a trade-off between the performance potential of improved
communication and the impact of resource consumption for communication infrastructure,
since the utilized resources on the FPGAs could otherwise be used for computations.
In this work, we investigate this trade-off, firstly, by using synthetic benchmarks
to evaluate the different configuration options of the communication framework
ACCL and their impact on communication latency and throughput. Finally, we use
our findings to implement a shallow water simulation whose scalability heavily
depends on low-latency communication. With a suitable configuration of ACCL, good
scaling behavior can be shown to all 48 FPGAs installed in the system. Overall,
the results show that the availability of inter-FPGA communication frameworks
as well as the configurability of framework and network stack are crucial to achieve
the best application performance with low latency communication.

  text:
Abstract
A new control method aims at the
precise high dynamic control of the force signal for experimental vibration analysis,
which is generated by an electrodynamic shaker. A bending beam is used as a nonlinear
test object. A design and a surrogate model of the test rig are shown and parameterized
based on test rig measurements. The force control algorithm using input/output
linearisation is described and implemented in Matlab/Simulink for simulative validation
studies. Conclusions drawn from the mathematical description of the problem as
well as simulation results show that the design of the contact between shaker
and test object is crucial to achieve a high control bandwidth and at the same
time reduce the energy consumption of the shaker. This leads to the practical
application using a novel damping contact element. Finally, experimental test
rig results are presented which show a closed loop bandwidth of at least 250 Hz
    for sinusoidal excitation signals.

text: The widespread adoption of ultra-high strength steels, due to their high bulk
resistivity, intensifies expulsion issues in resistance spot welding (RSW), deteriorating
both the spot weld and surface quality. This study presents a novel approach to
prevent expulsion by employing a preheating current. Through characteristic analysis
of joint formation under critical welding current, the importance of plastic material
encapsulation around the weld nugget (plastic shell) at high temperatures in preventing
expulsion is highlighted. To evaluate the effect of preheating on the plastic
shell and understand its mechanism in expulsion prevention, a two-dimensional
welding simulation model for dissimilar ultra-high strength steel joints was established.
The results showed that optimal preheating enhances the thickness of the plastic
shell, improving its ability to encapsulate the weld nugget during the primary
welding phase, thereby diminishing expulsion risks. Experimental validation confirmed
that by employing the optimal preheating current, the maximum nugget diameter
was enhanced to 9.42 mm, marking an increase of 13.4 % and extending the weldable
current range by 27.5 %. Under quasi-static cross-tensile loading, joints with
preheating demonstrated a 7.9 % enhancement in maximum load-bearing capacity compared
to joints without preheating, showing a reproducible and complete pull-out failure
mode within the heat-affected zone. This study offers a prevention method based
on underlying mechanisms, providing a new perspective for future research on welding
parameter optimization with the aim of expulsion prevention.

text: 'This study investigates whether, how, and under what conditions the expected
positive association between cooperative compliance programs and tax compliance
is attenuated by tax complexity. Many countries have implemented cooperative compliance
programs to improve compliance, however, the effectiveness of these programs varies
across countries. I expect and find that the complexity of a country''s tax system
might impair the compliance-enhancing impact of cooperative compliance programs.
Using cross-country data of 57 countries, I find that cooperative compliance programs
generally promote compliance, except in countries with highly complex tax codes.
Moreover, these programs are positively associated with tax compliance even if
tax procedures, such as tax filing and payment or tax audits, are highly complex.
My findings suggest that cooperative compliance programs can compensate for mistrust
caused by complex tax procedures and enhance compliance. However, they may not
be effective tools to enhance compliance in complex tax codes. '

text: This study analyzes whether and to what extent the provision of public goods
and firms' trust in local governments' handling of local business tax revenues
are associated with firms' willingness to pay local business tax. Using survey
data on German small-and medium-sized firms, we find that the average perceived
provision of public goods is not associated with the willingness to pay local
business tax. Separating public goods into private-and business-related public
goods, we find that the perception of public goods related to the private sphere
of firms' decision-makers is associated with an increase in firms' willingness
to pay local business tax by about 10%. However, public goods related to the business
sphere show no similar association. Contradictory to the perceived provision of
public goods, we find surprisingly no association between firms' willingness to
pay local business tax and the actual provision of public goods. Trust in local
governments' handling of tax revenue increases firms' willingness to pay local
business tax significantly, with an effect size of about twice as large as for
the perception of provided private-related public goods. These findings indicate
that the handling of tax revenues exerts a more pronounced influence on firms'
willingness to pay than the actual utilization of these revenues. Documenting
tax revenue implications, we further show that the average willingness to pay
local business tax within a local government is associated with a significant
decrease in tax avoidance by about 10%. Our results inform local governments about
how the provision of public goods and the building of trust can sustainably contribute
to firms' willingness to pay local business tax. Thus, our results contribute
to the understanding of how taxes can be efficiently collected and effectively
    used.
