text: Grocery retailers frequently apply price discounts to stimulate demand for
expiring perishables. However, integrating these discounted sales into future
demand forecasts presents a significant challenge. This study investigates the
    effectiveness of incorporating a fixed share of these sales as \textit{regular}
demand into the forecast, as commonly applied in practice. We employ a two-step
regression approach on data from a major European grocery retailer, covering over
1,700 products across 676 stores. We reveal that forecasts underestimate actual
demand for most SKUs when discounted sales occur. This residual uplift effect
is significantly influenced by the number of sales at reduced prices. Our findings
underscore the necessity for more precise approaches to integrate discounted sales
into demand forecasts, thereby preventing excess inventory and the associated
economic and environmental impacts of spoilage in the grocery sector.

text: 'Traditional dyadic customer-provider interactions are being shifted to polyadic
interactions involving diverse participants in digital service ecosystems. Especially,
artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly integrated into these ecosystems,
    so that they comprise non-human participants (e.g., AI-based chatbots)—fundamentally
altering the nature of value (co-)creation. While existing literature examines
human-to-human interactions, knowledge of service interactions between human actors
and AI-based systems is still underexplored. To address this research gap, we
develop a taxonomy, comprising six iterations, that explores the peculiarities
of AI as either a resource or a (non-human) agent in digital service ecosystems.
We evaluate our taxonomy using a multiple case study and derive the four archetypes
of AI in digital service ecosystems: (1) discriminative experience enhancer, (2)
protective ecosystem orchestrator, (3) ecosystem innovation companion, and (4)
personalized service composer. Our results extend the knowledge on service science
by showing how AI-based systems—discriminative or generative, and focusing on
the interaction in the ecosystem or the individual service encounter—assume the
role of resources and non-human agents. Researchers and practitioners can utilize
our results to augment their ecosystems with AI.
'

text: We present recent progress made towards ultra-broadband photonically assisted
analog-to-digital converters, that leverage both the low jitter of best-of-class
mode-locked lasers as well as the capability of optics to break down broadband
signals into multiple lower speed tributaries that can be better handled by electronics.
We review in particular our work on both time- and frequency-domain approaches
and give an outlook on how these architectures can be extended to include further
signal processing tasks such as equalization. Optically triggered track-and-hold
amplifiers are reported with an equivalent jitter below 80 fs rms in a signal
frequency range from 20 GHz to 70 GHz. Frequency-domain architectures implementing
optical arbitrary waveform measurement up to signal bandwidths of 610 GHz are
also shown. Finally, an architecture allowing the deserialization and equalization
of PAM4 signals is introduced and modeled for operation in 400 Gb/s links.

text: Integrated photonic-assisted signal processing has multiple applications such
as signal amplification, multiplexing, and high-Q filtering in optical communication
systems, optical sensing systems, and also microwave photonics. We will review
recent works on integrated photonic-assisted signal processing for sinc-shaped
Nyquist pulse generation, high-bandwidth Nyquist signal detection with low bandwidth
devices, arbitrary waveform generation and measurement, and on-chip photonic frequency
decoding. However, in such photonic integrated circuits (PICs), the photonic components
are placed very close to each other on the chip, resulting in thermal crosstalk
which degrades the system performance. Air-filled oxide and deep trench designs
have proven to be very effective in mitigating the thermal crosstalk for various
frequently deployed photonic devices like Mach-Zehnder modulators (MZMs), ring
resonators, optical switches, and photodetectors designed on a standard silicon-on-insulator
(SOI) platform. In this chapter, we will additionally review the basics of optical
signal processing and some results for such trench-enhanced thermal crosstalk
    resilient circuits.

text: High-speed ADCs operating in the tens of gigahertz up to potentially terahertz
range are largely constrained by the jitter in their clock sources. By incorporating
photonically assisted samplers that exploit the ultralow jitter of specific mode-locked
lasers (MLLs) as analogue ADC frontends, the performance limits of data converters
can be pushed to achieve unprecedented levels of accuracy. Continuous advancements
in electronic-photonic integration (silicon photonics) are clearing the path for
integrating these systems on a chip scale, thereby leading to increased scalability,
as well as reduced cost and power consumption.

text: This chapter explores the crucial role of simulation and modelling of electronic
and photonic components for terahertz (THz) systems. THz-related challenges already
begin with setting up the signal generation and sampling parameters and continue
with the realistic modelling of the electronic and photonic building blocks. Hereby,
photonic components require not only the modelling of the optical signal propagation
but also the modelling of the electronic interface in the THz regime. Furthermore,
when advancing to the simulation of systems like fully integrated electronic transmit
and receive frontends or photonically assisted analogue-to-digital converters
(ADCs), it is up to the designer to find a suitable level of abstraction. Size,
complexity, and available computational power versus accuracy must be taken into
consideration and prioritized against each other.

text: Sound capture by microphone arrays opens the possibility to exploit spatial,
in addition to spectral, information for diarization and signal enhancement, two
important tasks in meeting transcription. However, there is no one-to-one mapping
of positions in space to speakers if speakers move. Here, we address this by proposing
a novel joint spatial and spectral mixture model, whose two submodels are loosely
coupled by modeling the relationship between speaker and position index probabilistically.
Thus, spatial and spectral information can be jointly exploited, while at the
same time allowing for speakers speaking from different positions. Experiments
on the LibriCSS data set with simulated speaker position changes show great improvements
    over tightly coupled subsystems.

mathematics. Primarily due to the digitalization of society, students have potentially
greater access to a wider range of resources such as internet search engines,
learning platforms, educational videos, and Generative AI. This study investigates
the role of the mathematics textbook in comparison to other resources within students’
self-regulated learning practices. Data were collected via a survey of 1101 German
secondary students, representing three school types (\r\n Gymnasium\r\n

questionnaire assessed the frequency of resource use in and outside class, reasons
and purposes of use, and resource-based strategies when facing learning challenges
outside class. Results show that the printed mathematics textbook is the most
frequently used resource both in class and outside class. The textbook remains
the most relevant resource for key purposes, such as an aid for doing homework
and preparing for tests and exams. However, its dominance diminishes with age:
in upper secondary school, students increasingly rely on self-created notes, and
online resources. Correlation analyses reveal moderate to strong links between
in-class and out-of-class use, suggesting an association between resource use
and classroom culture. The findings underscore the textbook’s enduring centrality
as a foundational, trusted resource within a dynamic and increasingly diverse
learning environment. This study calls for pedagogical approaches that integrate
textbooks more intentionally within broader resource systems, supporting students’
agency and strategic resource selection in an era of digital abundance.\r\n
"

  text: "
Abstract
\r\n
Is explainable
AI feasible and desirable, and are explanations of AI decisions always good? Many
answer this question in the affirmative, but there is a growing discourse that
is suspicious of the promises of explainable AI used to explain decisions towards
users, considering it unfeasible, undesirable, and even potentially misleading.
Could explainable AI be just a rhetorical foil? This paper proposes that, yes,
explainable AI is a rhetorical technology but no, this does not necessarily make
it undesirable. It starts by revisiting this debate according to the initial charge
against rhetorics by Plato and Aristotle’s response, considering rhetoric pharmacologically,
as not only a poison but also a cure for political life. It argues that, just
as rhetoric was necessary to take care of the temporalities of public life, in
court, the public event, and the assembly, so may explainable AI contribute to
a rhetorical context. Yet, whether it does so is conditioned on the extent to
which it cultivates the civic virtues relative to a respective context. The paper
considers the examples of predictive policing, credit scoring, and prediction
markets to argue about ideal states – civic virtues that may be cultivated in
each appropriate context – and deviations that point at the risks of explainable
AI to lead to domination, conformism, and political recalcitrance.
"

text: 'We examine German individuals'' preferences for income and wealth taxation
and, importantly, the interplay between these two tax instruments. While prior
research often examines wealth tax preferences in isolation, actual tax systems
consist of multiple interacting taxes. To capture this dynamic, we elicit preferred
tax burdens in a large-scale online experiment with 2,702 participants randomly
assigned to one of four treatment groups: respondents state either an unspecified
overall tax burden, separate income and wealth tax burdens, an income tax burden
only, or a wealth tax burden only. Our baseline estimates reveal average (marginal)
tax rates of approximately 17.4% (18.9%) for income and 4.1% (2.3%) for wealth.
We find that participants associate wealth with an ability-to-pay taxes: when
a wealth tax is not explicitly available, preferred income tax rates are approximately
30% higher. However, when both instruments are available, participants do not
treat them as substitutes. Instead, they appear to treat the two taxes as separate
mental bins: the standalone income and wealth tax burdens are combined in a notably
additive manner, resulting in a significantly higher overall tax burden. Further,
respondents apply implicit exemptions for low levels of wealth and favor a wealth
tax base focused primarily on financial assets and real estate other than the
    primary residence.'

text: Electrifying the heating sector is essential for achieving global climate
targets like the Paris Agreement’s 1.5 °C goal. In Germany, where 80 % of household
energy goes to space heating and hot water, shifting to low-carbon solutions is
crucial. Fossil-fuelled district heating networks can incorporate renewable energy
via heat pumps, improving efficiency. Although heat pump design typically favours
minimal temperature lifts, higher lifts can be economically viable with low electricity
prices and abundant renewables. Adding thermal energy storage boosts operational
flexibility. This study explores a flexible heat pump operation incorporating
part load behaviour with a thermal energy storage in a German city’s district
heating system to minimise costs and carbon dioxide emissions. Using a mixed-integer
linear programming model, it examines the impact of temperature adjustments and
storage on system efficiency. The results show that the integration of a heat
pump in a district heating system reduces operating costs. Compared to a supply
without a heat pump, with levelised cost of heating of 9.98 cent/kWhth and a fixed
operating mode with costs between 9.96 cent/kWhth and 11.49 cent/kWhth, the flexible
use results in lowest costs of 9.85 cent/kWhth, while also reducing overall CO2
emissions. Using a full factorial sensitivity analysis, the levelised cost of
heating ranged between 9.15 cent/kWhth in the best case and 10.37 cent/kWhth in
the worst case for the selected configuration.

text: "Industrial electrification is increasing to reduce fossil fuel dependence,
alongside a growing share of volatile renewables.\r\nA secure and reliable energy
supply is crucial for industry, leading to a shift from centralised to decentralised
grid structures.\r\nDC microgrids becoming increasingly popular in industry, since
they enable energy recuperation from braking, reduce components and cables, and
integrate storage and local generation to manage supply interruptions or peak
loads.\r\nEVs add further synergies by serving as mobile storage units, helping
to store and redistribute locally generated renewable energy.\r\nThis paper analyses
how EV integration in droop-controlled DC grids can contribute to a more stable,
low-emission and peak-reduced load profile to the supply grid through load shifting
and bridge interruptions.\r\nA droop-controlled DC grid model has been developed,
incorporating an EV charging park based on probability functions.\r\nScalable
scenarios allow for diverse condition analysis using an energy management system
that utilises fuzzy logic and sequential MILP optimisation.\r\nIt has been shown
that a 7% improvement of coefficient represented grid-serving behaviour is possible
by load shifting.\r\nIt has also been demonstrated that an optimised EMS can reduce
the demand-based CO2 emissions by 41kg for a representative day compared to a
fuzzy logic EMS.\r\nAt the same time peak load is decreased yielding a more constant
residual load.\r\nThese results highlight the potential of a controlled bidirectional
charging infrastructure in DC grids and underscore the need to explicitly consider
charging processes to ensure a residual load as constant as possible."

text: This article explores the relativity of Islamic normativity through the taṣwīb
doctrine (kullu mujtahid muṣīb) as formulated by al-ʿAnbarī and received by al-Jāḥiẓ
    (d. 255/869), al-Jaṣṣāṣ (d. 370/981), and al-Baṣrī (d. 436/1044). Al-Jaṣṣāṣ reinterprets
the thesis through the ḥanafī principle of ashbah bi-l-aṣl as a hermeneutical-methodological
approach; al-Baṣrī elaborates it into an epistemo-logical model of normative plurality,
while al-Jāḥiẓ articulates a soteriological theory of moral responsibility in
the context of kalām. The analysis shows that classical Islamic legal theory developed
a distinct modelof normativity that maintains binding force under conditions of
pluralism and uncertainty. The article calls for renewed engagement with this
tradition in contemporary debates on religious normativity and legal pluralism.

text: Simulation-based design of high-power ultrasonic systems depends on the accurate
modelling of the electromechanical behaviour of piezoceramic materials. In practical
transducer applications, the relevant operating points are influenced by mechanical
preload and heating, both of which give rise to changes in the elastic, dielectric,
and piezoelectric material properties. Material parameters identified under idealised,
unloaded conditions are therefore insufficient to represent piezoceramic material
behaviour under realistic operating conditions. To overcome this limitation, experimental
setups are developed that enable the measurement of electrical impedance spectra
under controlled thermal and mechanical conditions. The acquired impedance data
are used in an inverse identification procedure, in which the behaviour of a finite
element forward model is iteratively fitted to the measurements using a block
coordinate descent optimisation strategy guided by a sensitivity analysis. This
yields effective linear material parameters as a function of temperature and mechanical
stress at varying operating points. The identified temperature-dependent parameters,
for instance, can be employed in a coupled thermo-electromechanical simulation
framework to predict the temperature-dependent material behaviour during operation.
The linear identification based on varying operation points provides an initial
approximation of the nonlinear material response, establishing a basis for the
development of corresponding nonlinear material models.
