This article focuses on discursive strategies, aiming to link the individual and structural level by investigating counter-narratives as a means to mitigate hostile behavioral intentions. Specifically, it examines the relationship between anti-Muslim hostility and two dimensions of counter-narratives: empathy and differentiation. The findings indicate that, in general, both empathy and differentiation are significantly associated with reduced anti-Muslim hostility. This association is particularly strong among those on the political left. Significant correlations pointing to the same direction are also observed in the political center. However, within the political right spectrum, only the affective component of counter-narratives, empathy, is linked to reduced hostility, while the cognitive dimension of counter-narratives, differentiation, does not show a significant relationship with anti-Muslim hostility. These findings suggest that greater emphasis should be placed and focused on counter-narratives and their potential to reduce hostility, both within the scientific community and in other knowledge production systems. Additionally, these findings have implications for effective prevention work, indicating that the affective component could be particularly effective in addressing the hostility of the highly relevant, most hostile target group of those who identify as politically right."}],"citation":{"short":"I. One central decision concern is whether to remain in the host country after graduation or return to the country of origin or move to another country. This article investigates the individual and social factors that shape post‐graduation work intentions among international Chinese students in Germany, the second‐largest international student group in the country. Drawing on original survey data from the Bright Futures project (2018), we analyse how life satisfaction, romantic partnerships, career aspirations and social networks influence students’ likelihood of planning to work in Germany after graduation. Using binary logistic regression models, we find that higher life satisfaction, valuing meaningful employment and having a partner in Germany are all significantly associated with intentions to stay. In contrast, the geographical location of broader personal networks shows no significant effect. These findings contribute to migration and higher education research by foregrounding the role of subjective well‐being and certain forms of relational embeddedness in shaping students’ imagined futures. Rather than treating international students as passive participants in education‐driven mobility, we highlight how personal and emotional factors influence their transition into potential long‐term migrants.
","lang":"eng"}],"_id":"65628","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.1111/glob.70059","user_id":"119325","volume":26,"year":"2026","status":"public","title":"What’s Next? This study investigates perceived individual responsibility, drawing upon Hans Jonas’ \"The Imperative of Responsibility\" as a theoretical framework. Our aim is to explore the relationship between five independent variables (perceived climate change threat, trust in technological progress, religiosity, responsibility for contemporaries impacted by natural disasters, and environmental concern) and the dependent variable of perceived environmental responsibility towards future generations. Findings reveal that approximately 77 percent of respondents in Germany are willing to sacrifice current standards of living to protect the environment for future generations. Notably, perceiving climate change as a threat, assuming responsibility for present-day impacts and environmental stewardship emerge as significant predictors of environmental responsibility towards future generations. Being religious also correlates with heightened environmental responsibility compared to non-religious individuals. Trust in technological progress only weakly correlates with intergenerational environmental responsibility, surprisingly suggesting a positive relationship. These findings provide valuable insights into determinants of perceived individual responsibility. In order to arrive at a more complete analysis, however, future research needs to complement this study of perceived individual-level responsibility with considerations on collective actors and structural factors. Loneliness refers to the difference between the actual and desired social relationships highlighting not only the quantity but also the quality of relationships. We argue for a perspective on loneliness that emphasizes its social context rather than relying mainly on individualistic or psychological interpretations prevalent thus far. In this article, we explore network predictors of loneliness among Chinese international students in Germany. Through our analysis of a unique data set, we show that when compared to the local students, international students tend to feel lonelier. Surprisingly, when we discover that when international students have the same network size, those with more emotionally supportive ties tend to experience more loneliness compared to those with fewer emotionally supportive ties. Not surprisingly, having a romantic partner is associated with lower levels of loneliness, especially when they also live in the country of education. Additionally, we find that international Chinese students who struggle to form cross‐national friendships report higher levels of loneliness. By delving into these findings, our research offers a sociological account of loneliness among international Chinese and local students in Germany.","lang":"eng"}],"extern":"1","date_created":"2025-10-21T11:21:41Z","type":"journal_article"},{"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"_id":"61897","page":"103–123","editor":[{"full_name":"Quintern, Detlev","last_name":"Quintern","first_name":"Detlev"}],"volume":2,"user_id":"119325","author":[{"last_name":"Diekmann","first_name":"Isabell","full_name":"Diekmann, Isabell","id":"119325"}],"title":"Islamfeindlichkeit, Muslim*innenfeindlichkeit und antimuslimischer Rassismus: differenzierende und integrative Ansätze zur Konzeptionalisierung","status":"public","year":"2025","intvolume":" 2","date_updated":"2025-10-21T12:09:49Z","date_created":"2025-10-21T11:21:41Z","keyword":["Islamfeindlichkeit","Muslim*innenfeindlichkeit","Antimuslimischer Rassismus","Vorurteile","Diskriminierung","Religion","Individuum","Struktur"],"type":"book_chapter","citation":{"mla":"Diekmann, Isabell. “Islamfeindlichkeit, Muslim*innenfeindlichkeit Und Antimuslimischer Rassismus: Differenzierende Und Integrative Ansätze Zur Konzeptionalisierung.” Türkisch-Deutsche Perspektiven / Türk-Alman Bakis Açilari, edited by Detlev Quintern, vol. 2, 2025, pp. 103–123.","ama":"Diekmann I. The absence of a clear distinction between attitudes towards individuals and attitudes towards the religion itself is evident in definitions that conflate (attitudes towards) Islam and Muslims, as well as in the operationalization process where surveys on overtly anti-Muslim attitudes are labelled as measuring anti-Islam attitudes. To explore whether the interchangeable usage of these terms is valid or whether there is empirical evidence supporting the need to differentiate between anti-Islam and anti-Muslim attitudes, an online survey was conducted (n = 497). The results indicate that anti-Islam and anti- Muslim attitudes are statistically distinct constructs that are nevertheless correlated. Furthermore, the study investigates the extent to which variations in the degree of hostile attitudes towards Islam and Muslims can be observed. The findings reveal that Islam is evaluated significantly more negatively than Muslims. In addition, an analysis of free associations related to the terms Islam and Muslims highlights notable differences. Although the respondents oftentimes see Muslims in the context of migration and integration, associations with Muslims tend to be more positive and based on personal experiences and interactions than associations with Islam. Associations with Islam, on the other hand, are characterized by threat and conflict and externalization to foreign countries. These findings have important implications for the theoretical conceptualization of anti- Islam and anti-Muslim attitudes. By differentiating between anti-Islam and anti- Muslim attitudes, it becomes possible to deconstruct these phenomena into their constituent elements and to understand their various dimensions. It is only through such disentanglement that the interconnected nature of anti-Islam and anti-Muslim attitudes can be comprehensively examined and effectively addressed."}],"issue":"1","publication":"Patterns of Prejudice","type":"journal_article","department":[{"_id":"477"}],"date_created":"2025-11-27T12:03:10Z","date_updated":"2025-11-27T12:04:10Z","publication_status":"published","intvolume":" 59","title":"Unpacking Hostile Attitudes towards Islam and Muslims: A Differentiated Approach to Understanding Perceptions of Religion and People","year":"2025","author":[{"id":"119325","last_name":"Diekmann","first_name":"Isabell","full_name":"Diekmann, Isabell"}],"doi":"10.1080/0031322X.2025.2557101","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"quality_controlled":"1","citation":{"chicago":"Diekmann, Isabell. “Unpacking Hostile Attitudes towards Islam and Muslims: A Differentiated Approach to Understanding Perceptions of Religion and People.” Patterns of Prejudice 59, no. 1 (2025): 75–97. https://doi.org/10.1080/0031322X.2025.2557101.","short":"I. A grassroots movement of mosques tries to reduce prejudice by organizing guided mosque tours for non-Muslims. While this is an opportunity for intergroup contact in a social psychological sense, contact occurs under sometimes difficult conditions. As yet, its effects have not been investigated empirically. Objective We examine (a) whether visits have an immediate and medium-term effect on prejudice toward Islam and (b) how they change the visitors’ subjective images of Muslims. Methods (a) We survey N = 324 secondary school students in a three-wave panel study in 6 guided mosque tours in different parts of Germany, including a control sample. The tour programme was in line with common practice in the mosques. Standardized measurements were taken immediately before and after the tour and again several months later. (b) We asked about subjective images of Muslims and had subjects report their spontaneous associations with the term Muslim. Results (a) Most, but not all, mosque visits significantly alleviate anti-Islam prejudice in the short term. The effects fall off after several months. (b) After the visit, the image of Muslims possessed more concrete religious content, while negative and menacing associations, such as oppression of women, threat, or so-called Islamic State have decreased. Conclusions Outgroup contact in a mosque works as predicted by the intergroup contact research, even under less than optimal conditions. However, there is potential for improvement of the setup of tours in the interest of a more sustainable impact."}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"doi":"10.1007/s41682-023-00161-4","year":"2024","title":"Do Guided Mosque Tours Alleviate the Prejudice of Non-Muslims against Islam and Muslims? Loneliness refers to the difference between the actual and desired social relationships. In the context of international student mobility, feelings of loneliness may be influenced not only by having a ‘sufficient’ number of social ties, but also other study-abroad-related stressors such as discrimination and not being able to make new cross-national friendships. In this article, we explore the predictors of loneliness among Chinese international students in Germany by examining both their social networks and the difficulties they face while studying abroad. Through our analysis of a unique dataset, we discover that when international students have an equal number of emotionally supportive ties, those with larger networks tend to experience less loneliness compared to those with smaller networks. Furthermore, having a romantic partner is associated with lower levels of loneliness. Additionally, we find that international Chinese students who encounter discrimination and struggle to form cross-national friendships report higher levels of loneliness. By delving into these findings, our research contributes valuable insights to the Special Issue, offering a novel examination of personal networks among international students in Germany. We analyze the role of emotional support in understanding loneliness among Chinese international students in Germany, in comparison to local students, from a gender perspective. Based on a representative sample, our findings suggest that Chinese international students feel lonelier than local ones. Female Chinese international students are less lonely compared to male ones, whereas the opposite is true for local students. Contrary to our expectations, a higher number of emotionally supportive ties is associated with higher levels of loneliness for all the students. Our further analysis of the correlation between emotional support and loneliness separately for the four subgroups indicates that while for female local students having more emotionally supportive ties is as-sociated with lower levels of loneliness, for female Chinese international students we find the opposite trend. For all male students, we find no significant effect of emotional support on loneliness. We recommend conducting a longitudinal study for examining the causality of the relationship between networks and loneliness in the future. Results have important implica-tions for universities and higher education research in understanding the role of networks on loneliness."}],"date_created":"2025-10-21T11:21:43Z","type":"report","keyword":["loneliness","personal networks","international student mobility","gender","emotional support"],"author":[{"last_name":"Bilecen","first_name":"Basak","full_name":"Bilecen, Basak"},{"full_name":"Diekmann, Isabell","last_name":"Diekmann","first_name":"Isabell","id":"119325"},{"last_name":"Faist","first_name":"Thomas","full_name":"Faist, Thomas"}],"year":"2023","status":"public","title":"The Dark Side of International Student Mobility: Which Students Suffer from Loneliness?","intvolume":" 178","date_updated":"2025-10-21T12:06:39Z","_id":"61908","publisher":"Centre on Migration, Citizenship and Development (COMCAD), Fakultät für Soziologie","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"page":"23","volume":178,"user_id":"119325"},{"extern":"1","citation":{"apa":"Bilecen, B., Diekmann, I., & Faist, T.
