    of vast amounts of data along the entire lifecycle of a product. The analysis
    of product lifecycle data in conjunction with product hypotheses leads to promising
    potentials in strategic product planning. In this thesis paper, we postulate the
    need for data-driven product generation and retrofit planning as an interdisciplinary
    field of research. We define and analyze the key concepts and derive requirements

  text: 'Today''s manufacturing industry is confronted with fundamental changes in
    value creation. The tension between the two megatrends of digitization and servitization
    leads to new hybrid market offerings, so-called smart services. Corresponding
    value networks fundamentally differ from traditional ones. Developing smart services
    requires new competences in young disciplines, while their provision requires
    new internal and external organizational structures or processes. To strengthen
    their competitive position, manufacturing companies need to adapt their value
    networks. However, the highly complex transformation of value crea-tion especially
    challenges small and medium-sized companies due to limited competences and resources.
    They must consider opening their boundaries and collaborating with partners. In
    this paper, we introduce a basic framework for planning smart services and present
    a methodology for competence-based plan-ning of value networks for smart services
    in three phases: Smart service analysis, competence analysis and value creation
    planning. The methodology is explained by an example from tooling machine industry.'

  text: Smart Services are digital, IT-based services that are using data of a corresponding
    physical product, e.g. predictive maintenance or automated reordering of consumables
    for a production machine. This contribution shows a study about 265 services from
    the German manufacturing industry. We derive hypothesis for identifying Smart
    Services as well as eleven variables and their 47 characteristics to systematically
    describe them. A clustering of the found Smart Services resulted in four distinguishable
    groups. Furthermore, we show statistics of how companies combine the characteristics
    of their market offerings. Our findings reflect where the theoretical possibilities
    were fully met by the implementations of the German manufacturing companies and
    where the industry is still lagging behind. Finally, we derived six bundles of
    highly consistent combinations of the characteristics. These bundles can be starting
    points for developing Smart Services for one’s specific use case.

  text: Die Umgestaltung einer Lagerproduktion zur kundenauftragsorientierten Produktion
    ist das definierte strategische Ziel des Produktionsbereichs Professional bei
    Miele & Cie. in Bielefeld. In Bielefeld werden Geräte der Spül- und Medizintechnik
    mit sehr hoher Wertschöpfungstiefe und in kleinen Stückzahlen produziert. Die
    Tendenz zur weiteren Verkleinerung der Los- und Auftragsgrößen ist jedoch steigend.
    Daher sind Produktivitätssteigerungen in diesem Umfeld nur durch eine kontinuierliche
    Reduzierung der Durchlaufzeit möglich. Dies bedingt eine Verbes-serung der Anlagen-
    und Personalflexibilität, der Stabilität der Teileversorgung und der Qualität
    der produzierten Bauteile und Endgeräte. Neben den hohen Qualitätsanforderungen
    an Miele Produkte führt im Bereich Professional zusätzlich das Medizinproduktegesetz
    zu einer hohen Komplexität der gefertigten Produkte. Deshalb kommt der Kompetenz
    der Mitarbeiter in der Produktion eine zentrale Rolle zu. Die Betrachtung des
    gesamten Wertstroms vom Lieferanten bis zum Kunden ist bei der strategischen kompetenzorientierten
    Ausrichtung der Wertschöpfungsstruktur unerlässlich. Deshalb wurde im ersten Schritt
    die Ist-Situation der Wertschöpfungsstruktur und der eingesetzten Technologien
    analysiert. Anschließend wurden die Technologien hinsichtlich ihrer strategischen
    Relevanz und der in der Professional Produktion vorhandenen Kompetenzen bewertet.
    Für hierdurch priorisierte Technologien wurden mögliche alternative Technologien
    ermittelt. Vor dem Hintergrund der Kompetenzplanung konnte letztlich entschieden
    werden, welche Technologien selbst eingesetzt und welche Produktionsschritte zu
    Lieferanten ausgelagert werden. Der Beitrag stellt sowohl die hierzu entwickelte
    Methode als auch die Ergebnisse aus der Validierung für die Ausrichtung der Professional
    Produktion in Bielefeld dar.

  text: Kaum ein Gebiet weist im Zuge der Digitalisierung so viel Disruptionspotential
    auf, wie digitale Plattformen. Nachdem es im B2C-Bereich mit Plattformen wie Amazon
    und Airbnb schon zu gravierenden Veränderungen in der Wettbewerbsarena kommt,
    steht der B2B-Bereich an der Schwelle zur so genannten Plattformökonomie. Im Maschinenbau
    versuchen Vorreiter wie Claas und Trumpf mit eigenen Plattformen das Heft des
    Handelns in die Hand zu bekommen. Das ist aber für kleine und mittlere Unternehmen
    kaum eine Erfolg versprechende Option, da es zu einem Shake Out unter den Plattformanbietern
    kommen wird und nur wenige Große überleben werden. Für KMU zeichnet sich schon
    jetzt die Bedrohung ab, dass sie den direkten Kundenkontakt verlieren und zu austauschbaren
    Ausführern werden. Im Grunde fehlt insbesondere den mittelständisch geprägten
    Unternehmen eine Strategie zur vorteilhaften Positionierung in der künftigen Plattformökonomie.
    Wir zeigen, wie sich mit Hilfe der Szenario-Technik strategische Optionen für
    den Maschinenbau mit einem Zeithorizont 2030 ableiten lassen. Das beruht auf der
    Antizipation der künftigen Rahmenbedingungen der Plattformökonomie sowie auf alternativen
    Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten der Unternehmen. Aus heutiger Sicht deutet alles darauf
    hin, dass die Unternehmen mit Rahmenbedingungen zu rechnen haben, die sich unter
    dem Szenario mit dem Titel „Erfolgreicher Mittelstand mit staatlicher Unterstützung“
    charakterisieren lassen. In dieser Situation bietet sich für die hier betrachtete
    Branche die Gestaltungsoption mit dem Titel „Kooperationen als Schlüssel zum Erfolg“
    an. Aus dieser strategischen Stoßrichtung werden Handlungsempfehlungen für die
    Branche und für einzelne Unternehmen formuliert. Die vorgestellten Ergebnisse
    basieren auf ausführlichen Interviews mit namhaften Experten des Maschinenbaus
    und aus dem Bereich Plattformökonomie. Die Arbeit ist als ein methodischer Ansatz
    zu verstehen, sich mit dem durch die Digitalisierung induszierten Wandel der Wettbewerbsarena
    des Maschinenbaus fundiert auseinanderzusetzen.
