In this paper, we explore different approaches to generating explanations in eXplainable AI (XAI) and make their underlying arguments explicit so that they can be evaluated by medical experts.\r\nIn particular, we present the findings of a user study conducted with physicians to investigate their perceptions of various types of AI-generated explanations in the context of diagnostic decision support. The study aims to identify the most effective and useful explanations that enhance the diagnostic process. \r\nIn the study, medical doctors filled out a survey to assess different types of explanations. Further, an interview was carried out post-survey to gain qualitative insights on the requirements of explanations incorporated in diagnostic decision support. Overall, the insights gained from this study contribute to understanding the types of explanations that are most effective."}],"project":[{"name":"TRR 318 - C5: TRR 318 - Subproject C5","_id":"128"}],"publication_status":"accepted","user_id":"93275","citation":{"apa":"Liedeker, F., Sanchez-Graillet, O., Seidler, M., Brandt, C., Wellmer, J., &#38; Cimiano, P. In this paper, we aim to address this shortcoming by conducting an empirical study focused on measuring the perceived value of the following types of explanations: plain explanations based on feature attribution, counterfactual explanations and complex counterfactual explanations. We measure an explanation's value using five dimensions: perceived accuracy, understandability, plausibility, sufficiency of detail, and user satisfaction. Our findings indicate a sweet spot of explanation complexity, with both dimensional and structural complexity positively impacting the perceived value up to a certain threshold."}],"title":"An Empirical Investigation of Users' Assessment of XAI Explanations: Identifying the Sweet-Spot of Explanation Complexity","conference":{"end_date":"2024-07-19","name":"2nd World Conference on eXplainable Artificial Intelligence","start_date":"2024-07-17","location":"Valetta, Malta"},"author":[{"last_name":"Liedeker","id":"93275","full_name":"Liedeker, Felix","first_name":"Felix"},{"first_name":"Christoph","full_name":"Düsing, Christoph","last_name":"Düsing"},{"full_name":"Nieveler, Marcel","first_name":"Marcel","last_name":"Nieveler"},{"last_name":"Cimiano","full_name":"Cimiano, Philipp","first_name":"Philipp"}]},{"publication":"Proceedings of the 1st Workshop on Multimodal, Affective and Interactive eXplainable AI (MAI-XAI)","quality_controlled":"1","ddc":["000"],"type":"conference","title":"ASCODI: An XAI-based interactive reasoning support system for justifiable medical diagnosing","file":[{"date_created":"2024-10-31T09:53:24Z","content_type":"application/pdf","file_id":"56845","access_level":"closed","file_size":519095,"file_name":"paper2.pdf","creator":"doba2","success":1,"relation":"main_file","date_updated":"2024-10-31T09:53:24Z"}],"project":[{"name":"TRR 318 - C5: TRR 318 - Subproject C5","_id":"128"}],"has_accepted_license":"1","user_id":"91864","date_created":"2024-10-31T09:54:27Z","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"year":"2024","status":"public","file_date_updated":"2024-10-31T09:53:24Z","_id":"56844","date_updated":"2024-10-31T09:57:13Z","conference":{"location":"Santiago de Compostela, Spain","start_date":"2024-10-19","name":"European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ECAI)","end_date":"2024-10-24"},"author":[{"id":"91864","last_name":"Battefeld","full_name":"Battefeld, Dominik","first_name":"Dominik","orcid":"0000-0002-5480-0594"},{"first_name":"Felix","full_name":"Liedeker, Felix","last_name":"Liedeker","id":"93275"},{"last_name":"Cimiano","full_name":"Cimiano, Philipp","first_name":"Philipp"},{"full_name":"Kopp, Stefan","first_name":"Stefan","last_name":"Kopp"}],"citation":{"mla":"Battefeld, Dominik, et al. “ASCODI: An XAI-Based Interactive Reasoning Support System for Justifiable Medical Diagnosing.” <i>Proceedings of the 1st Workshop on Multimodal, Affective and Interactive EXplainable AI (MAI-XAI)</i>, 2024.","bibtex":"@inproceedings{Battefeld_Liedeker_Cimiano_Kopp_2024, title={ASCODI: An XAI-based interactive reasoning support system for justifiable medical diagnosing}, booktitle={Proceedings of the 1st Workshop on Multimodal, Affective and Interactive eXplainable AI (MAI-XAI)}, author={Battefeld, Dominik and Liedeker, Felix and Cimiano, Philipp and Kopp, Stefan}, year={2024} }","short":"D.
