text: "Negated statements require more processing efforts than assertions. However,
in certain contexts, repeating negations undergo adaptation, which over time mitigates
the effort.\r\nHere, we ask negations hamper visual processing and whether consecutive
repetitions mitigate its influence. \r\nWe assessed the overall attentional capacity
and its distribution, the relative weight, quantitatively using \r\nthe formal
Theory of Visual Attention (TVA).\r\nWe employed a very simple form for negations,
binary negations. Negated instructions, expressing the only alternative to the
core supposition, were cognitively demanding, resulting in a loss of attentional
capacity in three experiments. The overall attentional capacity recovered gradually
but stagnated at a lower level than with assertions, even after many repetitions.
Additionally, negations distributed the attention equally between target and reference
stimulus. Repetitions slightly increased the reference' share of attention. Assertions,
on the other hand, shifted the attentional weight towards the target. Few repetitions
slightly decreased the bias towards the target, many repetitions increased the
    bias."

  text: "
Abstract
\r\n
Experiments with
ultracold atoms in optical lattices usually involve a weak parabolic trapping
potential which merely serves to confine the atoms, but otherwise remains negligible.
In contrast, we suggest a different class of experiments in which the presence
of a stronger trap is an essential part of the set-up. Because the trap-modified
on-site energies exhibit a slowly varying level spacing, similar to that of an
anharmonic oscillator, an additional time-periodic trap modulation with judiciously
chosen parameters creates nonlinear resonances which enable efficient Floquet
engineering. We employ a Mathieu approximation for constructing the near-resonant
Floquet states in an accurate manner and demonstrate the emergence of effective
ground states from the resonant trap eigenstates. Moreover, we show that the population
of the Floquet states is strongly affected by the phase of a sudden turn-on of
the trap modulation, which leads to significantly modified and rich dynamics.
As a guideline for further studies, we argue that the deliberate population of
only the resonance-induced effective ground states will allow one to realize Floquet
condensates which follow classical periodic orbits, thus providing challenging
future perspectives for the investigation of the quantum–classical correspondence.
"

text: This study examines the effect of major tax reform on firms’ demand for internal
tax department employees. Specifically, we analyze the effects of the Tax Cuts
and Jobs Act (TCJA) on the number of job postings and skill profiles for tax department
positions in large U.S. firms. Understanding how tax reform affects the demand
for tax employees is important for quantifying potential compliance costs and
assessing how firms adjust their tax planning capacity in response to new regulations.
Additionally, our findings provide insights into the evolving skill sets required
in the context of technological change and intensifying competition for talent.
To address our research question, we employ textual analyses and machine learning
techniques to identify and classify approximately 30,000 tax-related job postings
from 1,620 firms over the period of 2015-2020. Using a difference-in-differences
research design, we find a 26.7% increase in the number of tax-related job postings
in the three years following the TCJA enactment. This translates into approximately
1.5 new tax department employees, which, based on prior literature estimates of
tax department size, implies a 21% increase in the size of the average tax department.
Focusing on the dynamics, we find that this effect is concentrated in the second
year after the reform. Consistent with increased compliance costs and new tax
planning opportunities, we also find that firms seek tax department employees
for both compliance and planning roles, with some evidence of greater demand for
    employees focused on tax compliance.

text: We propose an approach for simultaneous diarization and separation of meeting
data. It consists of a complex Angular Central Gaussian Mixture Model (cACGMM)
for speech source separation, and a von-Mises-Fisher Mixture Model (VMFMM) for
diarization in a joint statistical framework. Through the integration, both spatial
and spectral information are exploited for diarization and separation. We also
develop a method for counting the number of active speakers in a segment of a
meeting to support block-wise processing. While the total number of speakers in
a meeting may be known, it is usually not known on a per-segment level. With the
proposed speaker counting, joint diarization and source separation can be done
segment-by-segment, and the permutation problem across segments is solved, thus
allowing for block-online processing in the future. Experimental results on the
LibriCSS meeting corpus show that the integrated approach outperforms a cascaded
approach of diarization and speech enhancement in terms of WER, both on a per-segment
    and on a per-meeting level.

text: Residual stresses in directly joined laminates made of steel and carbon fiber
reinforced epoxy resin reduce the interface and bond strength and thus have to
be taken into account for the strength analysis of structural components. For
a holistic description of residual stresses, a thermo-chemo-mechanical constitutive
model is introduced in the present work and presented for the multi-scale analysis
of residual stress patterns. In this context, the analysis of representative unit
cells with regular and stochastic distribution of fibers gives information about
the associated deformation and stress fields. Dehomogenization at macroscopically
highly stressed regions, characterized by local stress peaks, reveals the effect
of gradient deformation in the microstructure. Another aspect of this work is
the development of FFT-based Galerkin methods, which allows an evaluation of the
effect of defect densities, heterogeneities and morphologies on the applicability
of the incremental hole drilling method. It could be demonstrated that the incremental
hole drilling method is particularly sensitive to defects running along the surface.

    reagiert.

text: "As in almost every other branch of science, the major advances in data\r\nscience
and machine learning have also resulted in significant improvements\r\nregarding
the modeling and simulation of nonlinear dynamical systems. It is\r\nnowadays
possible to make accurate medium to long-term predictions of highly\r\ncomplex
systems such as the weather, the dynamics within a nuclear fusion\r\nreactor,
of disease models or the stock market in a very efficient manner. In\r\nmany cases,
predictive methods are advertised to ultimately be useful for\r\ncontrol, as the
control of high-dimensional nonlinear systems is an engineering\r\ngrand challenge
with huge potential in areas such as clean and efficient energy\r\nproduction,
or the development of advanced medical devices. However, the\r\nquestion of how
to use a predictive model for control is often left unanswered\r\ndue to the associated
challenges, namely a significantly higher system\r\ncomplexity, the requirement
of much larger data sets and an increased and often\r\nproblem-specific modeling
effort. To solve these issues, we present a universal\r\nframework (which we call
    QuaSiModO:\r\nQuantization-Simulation-Modeling-Optimization) to transform arbitrary\r\npredictive
models into control systems and use them for feedback control. The\r\nadvantages
of our approach are a linear increase in data requirements with\r\nrespect to
the control dimension, performance guarantees that rely exclusively\r\non the
accuracy of the predictive model, and only little prior knowledge\r\nrequirements
in control theory to solve complex control problems. In particular\r\nthe latter
point is of key importance to enable a large number of researchers\r\nand practitioners
to exploit the ever increasing capabilities of predictive\r\nmodels for control
in a straight-forward and systematic fashion."

text: "Continuous Speech Separation (CSS) has been proposed to address speech overlaps
during the analysis of realistic meeting-like conversations by eliminating any
overlaps before further processing.\r\nCSS separates a recording of arbitrarily
many speakers into a small number of overlap-free output channels, where each
output channel may contain speech of multiple speakers.\r\nThis is often done
by applying a conventional separation model trained with Utterance-level Permutation
Invariant Training (uPIT), which exclusively maps a speaker to an output channel,
in sliding window approach called stitching.\r\nRecently, we introduced an alternative
training scheme called Graph-PIT that teaches the separation network to directly
produce output streams in the required format without stitching.\r\nIt can handle
an arbitrary number of speakers as long as never more of them overlap at the same
time than the separator has output channels.\r\nIn this contribution, we further
investigate the Graph-PIT training scheme.\r\nWe show in extended experiments
that models trained with Graph-PIT also work in challenging reverberant conditions.\r\nModels
trained in this way are able to perform segment-less CSS, i.e., without stitching,
and achieve comparable and often better separation quality than the conventional
CSS with uPIT and stitching.\r\nWe simplify the training schedule for Graph-PIT
with the recently proposed Source Aggregated Signal-to-Distortion Ratio (SA-SDR)
loss.\r\nIt eliminates unfavorable properties of the previously used A-SDR loss
and thus enables training with Graph-PIT from scratch.\r\nGraph-PIT training relaxes
the constraints w.r.t. the allowed numbers of speakers and speaking patterns which
allows using a larger variety of training data.\r\nFurthermore, we introduce novel
signal-level evaluation metrics for meeting scenarios, namely the source-aggregated
    scale- and convolution-invariant Signal-to-Distortion Ratio (SA-SI-SDR and SA-CI-SDR),
which are generalizations of the commonly used SDR-based metrics for the CSS case."

  text:
Abstract
The biexciton‐exciton emission cascade
commonly used in quantum‐dot systems to generate polarization entanglement yields
photons with intrinsically limited indistinguishability. In the present work,
it focuses on the generation of pairs of photons with high degrees of polarization
entanglement and simultaneously high indistinguishability. It achieves this goal
by selectively reducing the biexciton lifetime with an optical resonator. It demonstrates
that a suitably tailored circular Bragg reflector fulfills the requirements of
sufficient selective Purcell enhancement of biexciton emission paired with spectrally
broad photon extraction and twofold degenerate optical modes. The in‐depth theoretical
study combines (i) the optimization of realistic photonic structures solving Maxwell's
equations from which model parameters are extracted as input for (ii) microscopic
simulations of quantum‐dot cavity excitation dynamics with full access to photon
properties. It reports non‐trivial dependencies on system parameters and use the
predictive power of the combined theoretical approach to determine the optimal
range of Purcell enhancement that maximizes indistinguishability and entanglement
to near unity values, here specifically for the telecom C‐band at 1550 nm.
