  abstract     = {{The main idea in On-The-Fly Computing is to automatically compose existing software services according to the wishes of end-users. However, since user requirements are often ambiguous, vague and incomplete, the selection and composition of suitable software services is a challanging task. In this paper, we present our current approach to improve requirement descriptions before they are used for software composition. This procedure is fully automated, but also has limitations, for example, if necessary information is missing. transdisciplinary collaboration and research of 13 doctoral students from different disciplines, i. e.
engineering, sciences and social sciences. The technological challenges of the research college itself

cooperation of the young researchers, a technology demonstrator was produced. On the one hand this
can be seen as demonstrator for the different technologies which are addressed by individual research

  abstract     = {{Inter- and transdisciplinary research are new demands in Higher Education. Aiming to enhance the social relevance, usability and sustainability of technological products and solutions, society and public institutions such as research funding organizations increasingly expect engineers to include inter- and transdisciplinary approaches into the development of new technologies. Engineering research and education, however, are particularly challenging areas to realize inter- and transdisciplinary collaborations, for manifold reasons.
This contribution presents methods and results of an inter- and transdisciplinary research and education strategy designed to meet the particular requirements of engineers and engineering students. It starts with a brief discussion of typical challenges regarding inter- and transdisciplinary approaches in engineering (research topics, research culture, skills, time, and barriers of lay people to involve in technology development). Secondly, it presents the methods developed to overcome those challenges within the context of the NRW Fortschrittskolleg "Light - Efficient - Mobile" (FK LEM). Founded in 2014, the FK LEM is a PhD programm focuses on lightweight construction, but with a special emphasis on how lightweight technologies are connected to different areas of society, to societal actors and technology users, and to the needs of a diversity of social groups. In order to explore these connections, we organized three workshops to bring public service, civil society, industry, practitioners and engineers together to discuss the perceived needs in those areas, and the potential of lightweight solutions. Topically, the workshops were dedicated to the fields of Rescue & Security Services; Care, Mobility & Assisted Living; and Sustainable Ressources & Climate Protection. Methodologically, we applied a pragmatic but valid approach to focus groups and discourse analysis. Results of the workshops in terms of directions for future research, epistemological and ethical dimensions of lightweight engineering are presented in the third part of our contribution. Finally, we discuss how our method and experience can be transferred into other engineering and educational contexts. With other words, how empowering students, engineers and the public to involve in inter- and transdisciplinary engineering processes can be achieved, and how this empowerment supports the development of innovative technologies as well as engineers’ skills to design technology in line with societies’ needs and challenges.}},

Drawing on methods of qualitative social research, the „Denkschule” allows to involve, document, analyze, thus to integrate a diversity of types of knowledge, experience and perspectives of participants in order to transfer them into socio-technical innovations. The „Denkschule” offers a dialogue forum for science and the public. In our contribution, we would like to introduce the concept of the „Denkschule”, the applied methods, some selected results, and approaches to transfer results into research and technology development. Currently, these focus on the topics of mobility support and care, rescue and security as well as resource efficiency and climate protection.

  abstract     = {{The Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) process by Stratasys is an additive manufacturing (AM) technique that can be used to produce complex thermoplastic parts without the need of a forming tool. A big challenge of this process is that there are several influencing factors with unknown effect on the resulting part properties. One of these factors is the layer time. The aim of this study is to examine the influence of the layer time on the resulting dimensional accuracy and mechanical properties of FDM components manufactured with the amorphous polymer ABS-M30. For this purpose a special job layout was designed to vary the layer time within a certain range. The investigations in this paper show a significant influence on the dimensional accuracy and also on the mechanical properties.}},

  abstract     = {{Apart from teaching, research and service to society, since 2015 higher education systems and institutions in Europe have faced an additional expectation – to respond to the largely unexpected yet nevertheless growing demand for higher education by refugees. This study explores system and organizational level responses to such environmental pressures in Germany and Flanders, both affluent systems, but different in terms of size, attractiveness as destination and the extent to which their languages are widely spoken. Relying primarily on document analysis and interviews, the study highlights three elements of policy dynamics: policy styles, main drivers, and extent of involvement of non-state actors. While, as expected, in both systems the dynamics were re-active, solution-driven, and with strong involvement of non-state actors, contrary to expectations both countries responded primarily in a bottom-up manner. The study provides a conceptual tool and a first empirical insight into this novel phenomenon.}},

Aufgrund der Kennlinie des Elektromagneten bietet sich hinsichtlich der Energieeffizienz ein nennenswertes Optimierungspotential. Der vorliegende Beitrag beschreibt die systematische Entwicklung eines Funktionsmusters, das bei ähnlichen Stückkosten und geringerem Materialeinsatz insbesondere für die Funktion „Halten“ eine signifikante Reduzierung des Energiebedarfs erreicht.}},

  abstract     = {{<jats:p>Gelled lyotropic liquid crystals can be formed by adding a gelator to a mixture of surfactant and solvent. If the gel network and the liquid-crystalline phase coexist without influencing each other, the self-assembly is called orthogonal. In this study, the influence of the organogelator 12-hydroxyoctadecanoic acid (12-HOA) on the lamellar and hexagonal liquid crystalline phases of the binary system H2O–C12E7 (heptaethylene glycol monododecyl ether) is investigated. More precisely, we added 12-HOA at mass fractions from 0.015 to 0.05 and studied the resulting phase diagram of the system H2O–C12E7 by visual observation of birefringence and by 2H NMR spectroscopy. In addition, the dynamic shear moduli of the samples were measured in order to examine their gel character. The results show that 12-HOA is partly acting as co-surfactant, manifested by the destabilization of the hexagonal phase and the stabilization of the lamellar phase. The higher the total surfactant concentration, the more 12-HOA is incorporated in the surfactant layer. Accordingly, its gelation capacity is substantially reduced in the surfactant solution compared to the system 12-HOA–n-decane, and large amounts of gelator are required for gels to form, especially in the lamellar phase.</jats:p>}},
