Although these structural features are crucial for their performance, the mechanisms behind such transitions are not well understood. Herein, we describe the mechanism of transformation from layered 2D δ-MnO2 nanosheets to the scarcely reported γ-MnO2 nanocone morphology. Despite the common purpose of introducing Fe dopants to enhance the conductivity of layered manganese oxides, the Fe galvanic exchange reaction was found responsible for such coupled phase/morphology transition. Electrochemical characterization confirmed a distinct electrochemical behaviour of the nanocones, emphasizing the need to unravel the mechanism of 2D MnO2 transformation. Such mechanistic insights were gained by systematic and rigorous electron microscopy studies. The effect of the local chemical composition was determined by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy while electron energy loss spectroscopy unravelled the key influence of the oxidation state of Mn ions within nanosheets and nanocones. We propose and demonstrate a Mn2+-mediated oxidative mechanism of coupled morphology/phase transformation subjected to the equilibrium of Fe and Mn ions during galvanic exchange reaction. These findings contribute to the understanding of the growth and morphology/phase transformations of manganese oxide nanostructures, providing insights for the rational design of nanomaterials."}],"extern":"1","issue":"45","publication":"Journal of Materials Chemistry A","doi":"10.1039/d2ta06552e","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1"}],"intvolume":" 10","article_type":"original","date_updated":"2025-12-03T16:30:43Z","publication_status":"published","author":[{"first_name":"Raquel","last_name":"Aymerich-Armengol","full_name":"Aymerich-Armengol, Raquel"},{"full_name":"Cignoni, Paolo","last_name":"Cignoni","first_name":"Paolo"},{"full_name":"Ebbinghaus, Petra","last_name":"Ebbinghaus","first_name":"Petra"},{"last_name":"Linnemann","first_name":"Julia","orcid":"0000-0001-6883-5424","full_name":"Linnemann, Julia","id":"116779"},{"last_name":"Rabe","first_name":"Martin","full_name":"Rabe, Martin"},{"first_name":"Kristina","last_name":"Tschulik","full_name":"Tschulik, Kristina"},{"first_name":"Christina","last_name":"Scheu","full_name":"Scheu, Christina"},{"last_name":"Lim","first_name":"Joohyun","full_name":"Lim, Joohyun"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["2050-7488","2050-7496"]},"year":"2022","title":"Mechanism of coupled phase/morphology transformation of 2D manganese oxides through Fe galvanic exchange reaction"},{"type":"book_chapter","department":[{"_id":"296"},{"_id":"230"},{"_id":"429"},{"_id":"295"},{"_id":"15"},{"_id":"170"},{"_id":"35"},{"_id":"790"}],"date_created":"2022-03-13T15:28:47Z","abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"Lithium niobate (LiNbO3), a material frequently used in optical applications, hosts different kinds of polarons that significantly affect many of its physical properties. In this study, a variety of electron polarons, namely free, bound, and bipolarons, are analyzed using first-principles calculations. We perform a full structural optimization based on density-functional theory for selected intrinsic defects with special attention to the role of symmetry-breaking distortions that lower the total energy. The cations hosting the various polarons relax to a different degree, with a larger relaxation corresponding to a larger gap between the defect level and the conduction-band edge. The projected density of states reveals that the polaron states are formerly empty Nb 4d states lowered into the band gap. Optical absorption spectra are derived within the independent-particle approximation, corrected by the GW approximation that yields a wider band gap and by including excitonic effects within the Bethe-Salpeter equation. Comparing the calculated spectra with the density of states, we find that the defect peak observed in the optical absorption stems from transitions between the defect level and a continuum of empty Nb 4d states. Signatures of polarons are further analyzed in the reflectivity and other experimentally measurable optical coefficients."}],"publication":"New Trends in Lithium Niobate: From Bulk to Nanocrystals","doi":"10.3390/books978-3-0365-3339-1","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"date_updated":"2025-12-05T14:00:04Z","publication_status":"published","title":"Electron polarons in lithium niobate: Charge localization, lattice deformation, and optical response","year":"2022","author":[{"last_name":"Schmidt","first_name":"Falko","orcid":"0000-0002-5071-5528","full_name":"Schmidt, Falko","id":"35251"},{"id":"77566","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6584-0201","last_name":"Kozub","first_name":"Agnieszka L.","full_name":"Kozub, Agnieszka L."},{"id":"171","full_name":"Gerstmann, Uwe","first_name":"Uwe","orcid":"0000-0002-4476-223X","last_name":"Gerstmann"},{"orcid":"0000-0002-2717-5076","last_name":"Schmidt","first_name":"Wolf Gero","full_name":"Schmidt, Wolf Gero","id":"468"},{"first_name":"Arno","last_name":"Schindlmayr","orcid":"0000-0002-4855-071X","full_name":"Schindlmayr, Arno","id":"458"}],"publication_identifier":{"isbn":["978-3-0365-3340-7"],"eisbn":["978-3-0365-3339-1"]},"place":"Basel","quality_controlled":"1","project":[{"name":"TRR 142: TRR 142","_id":"53"},{"_id":"55","name":"TRR 142 - B: TRR 142 - Project Area B"},{"_id":"69","name":"TRR 142 - B4: TRR 142 - Subproject B4"},{"name":"TRR 142 - A: TRR 142 - Project Area A","_id":"54"},{"name":"TRR 142 - A11: TRR 142 - Subproject A11","_id":"166"},{"_id":"168","name":"TRR 142 - B07: TRR 142 - Subproject B07"},{"_id":"52","name":"PC2: Computing Resources Provided by the Paderborn Center for Parallel Computing"},{"name":"TRR 142: Maßgeschneiderte nichtlineare Photonik: Von grundlegenden Konzepten zu funktionellen Strukturen","_id":"53"}],"citation":{"chicago":"Schmidt, Falko, Agnieszka L. These programmes’ main characteristic and greatest challenge is their integration of academic and vocational learning. So far, this challenge has frequently been stated without specifying its exact nature and consequences for learners. The present study addresses this pedagogical research gap and examines the extent of variation in the degree of integration among dual study programmes. With reference to curriculum theory, the study develops an empirical typology of curricular integration in dual programmes. The data sample consists of 152 programmes at (dual) universities and universities of applied sciences. Data is analysed using hierarchical cluster analysis. Results indicate that the currently prevailing forms of curricular integration should best be differentiated according to five types. The five overlapping types of integration are located on a continuum ranging from parallelism through organisational linking to full curricular integration targeted immediately at students’ personal integration. The analysis confirms that there are problems with complying with integration standards set on the policy level. Above all, the study offers new insights on what marks the diverse integration landscape of dual study programmes. It proves that approaches to integration are more differentiated than previous research has shown."}],"issue":"6","publication":"Higher Education","keyword":["Dual study programmes · Curricular integration · Curriculum theory · Empirical typology · Cluster analysis · Germany"],"type":"journal_article","department":[{"_id":"282"},{"_id":"208"},{"_id":"640"}],"date_created":"2023-10-05T09:25:30Z","status":"public","user_id":"71994","volume":85,"page":"1257-1279","_id":"47627","publisher":"Springer Science and Business Media LLC","quality_controlled":"1","citation":{"ieee":"L. Eberhard holds that there was nothing new, but all delivered in Leibniz and Wolff; to prove his claim he refers to a quote from Du Châtelet, taken from a paragraph where she determines the right understanding as to be able “to penetrate to the origin of phenomena”. This paper brings Du Châtelet into discourse with Kant via this Eberhard quote. In its first part, it investigates the use of her quote in the Kant-Eberhard controversy. The second part serves to ground the quote in Du Châtelet’s epistemology. It lays out how to understand Du Châtelet’s claim to penetrate to the origin of phenomena. Du Châtelet’s claim to have renewed philosophy must be taken seriously, and it is helpful for rethinking the German philosophical development from the rationalists to Kant through including Du Châtelet’s theory of cognition."}],"publication":"Époque Émilienne Philosophy and Science in the Age of Émilie Du Châtelet (1706-1749)","department":[{"_id":"615"},{"_id":"14"},{"_id":"519"}],"keyword":["Émilie Du Châtelet","History of Science","Newton","Kant","Eberhard","Wolff","Leibniz"],"type":"book_chapter","date_created":"2022-12-21T11:35:14Z"},{"user_id":"117722","volume":33,"publisher":"Elsevier BV","_id":"63234","status":"public","quality_controlled":"1","citation":{"ama":"Wiegmann J, Leppin C, Langhoff A, et al. What these attempts have in common is the recognition that learning can be supported in a variety of ways because a learner can be engaged in different activities that foster learning. Up to now, three roles have been proposed when designing these activities for robots: as a teacher or tutor, a learning peer, or a novice. Current research proposes that deciding in favor of one role over another depends on the content or preferred pedagogical form. However, the design of activities changes not only the content of learning, but also the nature of a human–robot social relationship. This is particularly important in language acquisition, which has been recognized as a social endeavor. The following review aims to specify the differences in human–robot social relationships when children learn language through interacting with a social robot. After proposing categories for comparing these different relationships, we review established and more specific, innovative roles that a robot can play in language-learning scenarios. This follows Mead’s (1946) theoretical approach proposing that social roles are performed in interactive acts. While research in human-human interaction suggests that changing human partners during children's language learning can reduce their recall performance of the learning content, little is known whether a change in social robots as interaction partners influence children's learning in the same way. In this paper, we present findings from a word learning study, in which we changed the robotic partner for one group of children while the other group interacted with the same robot. Contrary to work with human social partners, we found that children did not retrieve words differently when interacting with different humanoid robots as their social interaction partners.","lang":"eng"}],"quality_controlled":"1","citation":{"chicago":"Tolksdorf, Nils Frederik, Dirk Hönemann, Franziska E. Interspeech 2022","abstract":[{"text":"Recent speaker diarization studies showed that integration of end-to-end neural diarization (EEND) and clustering-based diarization is a promising approach for achieving state-of-the-art performance on various tasks. Such an approach first divides an observed signal into fixed-length segments, then performs {\\it segment-level} local diarization based on an EEND module, and merges the segment-level results via clustering to form a final global diarization result. The segmentation is done to limit the number of speakers in each segment since the current EEND cannot handle a large number of speakers. In this paper, we argue that such an approach involving the segmentation has several issues; for example, it inevitably faces a dilemma that larger segment sizes increase both the context available for enhancing the performance and the number of speakers for the local EEND module to handle. To resolve such a problem, this paper proposes a novel framework that performs diarization without segmentation. However, it can still handle challenging data containing many speakers and a significant amount of overlapping speech. The proposed method can take an entire meeting for inference and perform {\\it utterance-by-utterance} diarization that clusters utterance activities in terms of speakers. To this end, we leverage a neural network training scheme called Graph-PIT proposed recently for neural source separation. Experiments with simulated active-meeting-like data and CALLHOME data show the superiority of the proposed approach over the conventional methods.","lang":"eng"}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"main_file_link":[{"url":"https://www.isca-archive.org/interspeech_2022/kinoshita22_interspeech.pdf"}],"doi":"10.21437/Interspeech.2022-11408","author":[{"full_name":"Kinoshita, Keisuke","first_name":"Keisuke","last_name":"Kinoshita"},{"first_name":"Thilo","last_name":"von Neumann","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7717-8670","full_name":"von Neumann, Thilo","id":"49870"},{"first_name":"Marc","last_name":"Delcroix","full_name":"Delcroix, Marc"},{"last_name":"Boeddeker","first_name":"Christoph","full_name":"Boeddeker, Christoph","id":"40767"},{"id":"242","full_name":"Haeb-Umbach, Reinhold","last_name":"Haeb-Umbach","first_name":"Reinhold"}],"title":"Utterance-by-utterance overlap-aware neural diarization with Graph-PIT","year":"2022","date_updated":"2025-02-12T09:09:05Z","publication_status":"published","citation":{"ama":"Kinoshita K, von Neumann T, Delcroix M, Boeddeker C, Haeb-Umbach R. In this study, the interactions of different welding current levels and weld times on the tendency for LME cracking in third-generation AHSSs were investigated. LME manifested itself as high-penetration cracks around the circumference of the spot welds for welding currents closely below the expulsion limit. At the same time, the observed tendency for LME cracking showed no direct correlation with the overall heat input of the investigated welding processes. To identify a reliable indicator of the tendency for LME cracking, the local strain rate at the origin of the observed cracks was analyzed over the course of the welding process via finite element simulation. While the local strain rate showed a good correlation with the process-specific LME cracking tendency, it was difficult to interpret due to its discontinuous course. Therefore, based on the experimental measurement of electrode displacement during welding, electrode indentation velocity was proposed as a descriptive indicator for quantifying cracking tendency.
"}],"date_created":"2024-03-18T11:51:57Z","type":"journal_article","keyword":["Metals and Alloys","Mechanical Engineering","Mechanics of Materials"],"department":[{"_id":"157"}],"year":"2022","title":"The Influence of Electrode Indentation Rate on LME Formation during RSW","author":[{"full_name":"Böhne, Christoph","first_name":"Christoph","last_name":"Böhne","id":"22483"},{"id":"32056","full_name":"Meschut, Gerson","last_name":"Meschut","orcid":"0000-0002-2763-1246","first_name":"Gerson"},{"full_name":"BIEGLER, MAX","last_name":"BIEGLER","first_name":"MAX"},{"full_name":"RETHMEIER, MICHAEL","first_name":"MICHAEL","last_name":"RETHMEIER"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["0043-2296","2689-0445"]},"date_updated":"2025-08-07T09:29:30Z","publication_status":"published","intvolume":" 101","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"doi":"10.29391/2022.101.015","popular_science":"1","citation":{"apa":"Böhne, C., Meschut, G., BIEGLER, M., & RETHMEIER, M. Five main categories of fact-checking approaches for knowledge graphs have been proposed in the recent literature, of\r\nwhich each is subject to partially overlapping limitations. In particular, current text-based approaches are limited by manual feature engineering. Path-based and rule-based approaches are limited by their exclusive use of knowledge graphs as background knowledge, and embedding-based approaches suffer from low accuracy scores on current fact-checking tasks. We propose a hybrid approach—dubbed HybridFC—that exploits the diversity of existing categories of fact-checking approaches within an ensemble learning setting to achieve a significantly better prediction performance. In particular, our approach outperforms the state of the art by 0.14 to 0.27 in terms of Area Under the Receiver Operating Characteristic curve on the FactBench dataset.
