This reaction operates at very positive potentials, where the electrocatalyst is exposed to highly oxidative conditions and prone to potential-dependent transformation of the near-surface region. While substantial evidence for such surface restructuring exists, its extent and relevance for the catalyst’s activity are unclear. We address this topic for the case of Co3O4, one of the best-known electrocatalysts exhibiting surface restructuring, by studies of epitaxial (111)-ordered electrodeposited films with combined operando X-ray surface diffraction and absorption spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and electrochemical measurements on rotating disk electrodes. Comparison of the as-prepared and annealed state of the same samples, which both are stable even under long-term oxygen evolution conditions, provides clear insight into the role of surface defects. Our results show that defect-free annealed Co3O4(111) surfaces are structurally stable over a wide potential range and hydroxylate via adsorption at surface oxygen and Co sites. Potential-induced surface restructuring of the Co3O4 lattice occurs only in the presence of surface defects, leading to the formation of the well-known nanometer-thick oxyhydroxide skin layer. The presence of this skin layer promotes oxygen evolution at low overpotentials but results in higher Tafel slopes. As a result, highly ordered Co3O4(111) surfaces are more active at high current densities than defective Co3O4 surfaces that undergo surface restructuring. These results highlight that strategies for catalyst surface defect engineering need to be application-oriented."}],"publication":"ACS Catalysis","title":"Role of Defects in Reversible Surface Restructuring and Activity of Co3O4 Oxygen Evolution Electrocatalysts","publisher":"American Chemical Society (ACS)","date_created":"2026-02-16T14:22:15Z","year":"2026","quality_controlled":"1","article_number":"acscatal.5c08785","article_type":"original","_id":"64182","department":[{"_id":"985"}],"user_id":"116779","status":"public","type":"journal_article","doi":"10.1021/acscatal.5c08785","main_file_link":[{"url":"https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acscatal.5c08785","open_access":"1"}],"oa":"1","date_updated":"2026-02-16T14:25:00Z","author":[{"full_name":"Scharf, Carl Hendric","last_name":"Scharf","first_name":"Carl Hendric"},{"full_name":"Chandraraj, Alex","last_name":"Chandraraj","first_name":"Alex"},{"first_name":"Konrad","full_name":"Dyk, Konrad","last_name":"Dyk"},{"first_name":"Felix","full_name":"Stebner, Felix","last_name":"Stebner"},{"full_name":"Lepin, Sören","last_name":"Lepin","first_name":"Sören"},{"first_name":"Jing","full_name":"Tian, Jing","last_name":"Tian"},{"first_name":"Laila","full_name":"El Bergmi Byaz, Laila","last_name":"El Bergmi Byaz"},{"last_name":"Stettner","full_name":"Stettner, Jochim","first_name":"Jochim"},{"first_name":"Christian","last_name":"Leppin","id":"117722","full_name":"Leppin, Christian"},{"first_name":"Anastasiia","full_name":"Kotova, Anastasiia","last_name":"Kotova"},{"last_name":"Reinke","id":"117727","full_name":"Reinke, Sebastian","first_name":"Sebastian"},{"orcid":"0000-0001-6883-5424","last_name":"Linnemann","full_name":"Linnemann, Julia","id":"116779","first_name":"Julia"},{"last_name":"Maroun","full_name":"Maroun, Fouad","first_name":"Fouad"},{"last_name":"Magnussen","full_name":"Magnussen, Olaf M.","first_name":"Olaf M."}],"citation":{"apa":"Scharf, C. This study aims to advance the understanding and simulation of CFRP behavior through the development of a hyperelastic-plastic-damage homogenization method combined with mean-field theory. The material responses of both the fiber and matrix are modeled using strain energy functions that account for damage evolution, while a complete linearization of the homogenization process is derived to ensure the consistent implementation of the Newton–Raphson iteration scheme in large deformation simulations. The innovative aspect of this work lies in the constitutive linearization for the hyperelastic-plastic-damage formulation within a mean-field homogenization framework, providing an efficient Newton algorithm for modeling the nonlinear behavior of CFRP. A failure criterion for the hyperelastic model of fibers is introduced, along with a damage saturation variable in rate form for the matrix, effectively capturing damage evolution. Through discrete formulations for the homogenization, the proposed model’s capability is demonstrated via three numerical examples and validated against experimental investigations, proving its effectiveness and reliability in simulating CFRP damage.
"}],"publication":"Mathematics and Mechanics of Solids","type":"journal_article","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"article_number":"10812865261420809","department":[{"_id":"9"},{"_id":"952"},{"_id":"321"}],"user_id":"85414","_id":"64187"},{"title":"Preliminary Numerical Evaluation of Directly Heated Structured Packings to be Used for Separation Processes","doi":"10.1002/cite.70076","date_updated":"2026-02-23T06:59:41Z","publisher":"Wiley","author":[{"first_name":"Nicole","orcid":"0009-0006-7828-8448","last_name":"Lutters","full_name":"Lutters, Nicole","id":"22006"},{"last_name":"Brüne","full_name":"Brüne, Sascha","first_name":"Sascha"},{"last_name":"Riese","orcid":"0000-0002-3053-0534","full_name":"Riese, Julia","id":"101499","first_name":"Julia"}],"date_created":"2026-02-16T07:56:53Z","year":"2026","citation":{"ama":"Lutters N, Brüne S, Riese J. To tackle this challenge, on the one hand, modifying the powertrain system is a possibility, and on the\r\nother hand, lightweight design offers various possibilities. Multi-Material Design (MMD) involves designing car\r\nbodies that combine different materials that require joining. Given the variety of materials, mechanical joining\r\nprocesses are preferred. Especially the current development of the Giga/Mega-casting process concerning\r\naluminium casting and the subsequent mechanical joining illustrates the challenges of this material group. In car\r\nproduction, aluminium castings are mainly made from aluminium-silicon (AlSi) alloys. Ultimately, the alloy\r\nsystem's insufficient ductility leads to crack initiation during mechanical joining. Cast parts are therefore often\r\nused in areas of the car body that are exposed to high-pressure loads. For example, self-piercing riveting (SPR) is\r\nused due to its high load-bearing capacity. In this study, improved joinability is demonstrated by influencing the\r\nmicrostructure through tailored solidification rates and a developed heat-treatment chain strategy adapted for\r\nhypoeutectic AlSi systems. Data on microstructure, mechanical, and joining properties are used to develop a\r\nsolidification-joining correlation for the SPR process across a range of Si contents and solidification rates. The\r\npurpose is to develop the ability to produce suitable aluminium castings with sufficient joinability, thereby\r\nimproving versatility.","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Journal of Manufacturing Processes","keyword":["Mechanical joining","Aluminium","Self-piercing riveting","Casting","Microstructure","Joinability AlSi-alloys"],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"year":"2026","quality_controlled":"1","title":"Solidification-joinability correlation of hypoeutectic aluminium casting alloys for self-piercing riveting (SPR)","publisher":"Elsevier","date_created":"2026-02-26T11:21:24Z","status":"public","type":"journal_article","article_type":"original","funded_apc":"1","project":[{"_id":"131","name":"TRR 285 - Project Area A"},{"_id":"133","name":"TRR 285 - Project Area C"},{"_id":"136","name":"TRR 285 - Subproject A02"},{"_id":"146","name":"TRR 285 - Subproject C02"},{"name":"TRR 285: Methodenentwicklung zur mechanischen Fügbarkeit in wandlungsfähigen Prozessketten","_id":"130"}],"_id":"64678","user_id":"32340","department":[{"_id":"43"},{"_id":"158"},{"_id":"157"},{"_id":"321"}],"citation":{"chicago":"Neuser, Moritz, Pia Katharina Kaimann, Ina Stratmann, Mathias Bobbert, Johann Moritz Benedikt Klöckner, Moritz Mann, Kay-Peter Hoyer, Gerson Meschut, and Mirko Schaper. “Solidification-Joinability Correlation of Hypoeutectic Aluminium Casting Alloys for Self-Piercing Riveting (SPR).” Journal of Manufacturing Processes 164 (2026). https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jmapro.2026.02.040.","ieee":"M. However, their nonlinear behavior challenges accurate modeling. Traditional physics-based models often fail to balance simplicity, accuracy, and computational efficiency. The growing availability of experimental data offers opportunities to improve RMB modeling through hybrid and data-driven approaches. This study evaluates physics-based, hybrid, and data-driven methods based on predictive accuracy, modeling effort, and computational cost. Hybrid approaches, combining machine learning techniques with physics-based models, are investigated to leverage their complementary strengths. Results show that hybrid methods enhance accuracy for simpler models with a modest increase in computational time. This highlights their potential to simplify RMB modeling while balancing accuracy and efficiency, offering insights for advancing multi-body system simulations. Building on these insights, data-driven methods are explored for their ability to provide surrogate models for dynamical systems without requiring expert knowledge. Experiments reveal that while simple data-driven methods approximate system behavior when data has low variance, they fail with trajectories of widely varying frequency and amplitude.","lang":"eng"}],"status":"public","type":"journal_article","publication":"Multibody System Dynamics","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"_id":"63765","user_id":"43991","department":[{"_id":"151"}],"year":"2026","citation":{"chicago":"Wohlleben, Meike Claudia, Jan Schütte, Manuel Bastian Berkemeier, Walter Sextro, and Sebastian Peitz. “Evaluating Physics-Based, Hybrid, and Data-Driven Models for Rubber-Metal Bushings.” Multibody System Dynamics, 2026, 1–21. https://doi.org/10.1007/s11044-026-10146-9.","ieee":"M. The objective is to determine mechanical properties of coating layer in order to incorporate its influence into numerical simulation models for load-bearing adhesive joints. For this purpose, both single-lap joints (SLJ) and modified thick adherend shear specimens (TASS) with defined CED coating layers were produced and tested under quasi-static loading conditions. Additionally, the deposition process was analysed in terms of coating thickness evolution as a function of deposition time and applied voltage. The specimens were pre-cured to reduce gas inclusions from evaporating solvents in the CED coating layer. The pre-curing temperature was determined using DSC. The results indicate that the modified TASS configuration is particularly suited for the reproducible evaluation of the shear load-bearing capacity. In comparison to the SLJ, it favours the degassing of solvents through the installation of grooves. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that gas-induced defect zones originating from the electrochemical deposition process significantly compromise joint performance. The experimental and process methodology developed in this study enables isolated characterisation of the coating layer and provides a solid foundation for simulation of coated adhesive joints."}],"department":[{"_id":"157"}],"user_id":"104312","_id":"64813","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["0021-8464","1545-5823"]},"quality_controlled":"1","publication_status":"published","page":"1-16","citation":{"mla":"Hofmann, Julia, et al. “Method Development for the Mechanical Characterisation of Cathodic Electrodeposition Coatings for Numerical Simulation of Bonded Joints.” The Journal of Adhesion, Informa UK Limited, 2026, pp. 1–16, doi:10.1080/00218464.2026.2621198.","bibtex":"@article{Hofmann_Teutenberg_Meschut_2026, title={Method development for the mechanical characterisation of cathodic electrodeposition coatings for numerical simulation of bonded joints}, DOI={10.1080/00218464.2026.2621198}, journal={The Journal of Adhesion}, publisher={Informa UK Limited}, author={Hofmann, Julia and Teutenberg, Dominik and Meschut, Gerson}, year={2026}, pages={1–16} }","short":"J. So far, investigations involving intimate covalent or ionic bonds have not been a focus. Yet, we show here that an established technique, involving thermocompressional wafer bonding, works well for creating twisted non-van der Waals interfaces. We have successfully bonded z-cut lithium niobate single crystals to create ferroelectric oxide interfaces with strong polar discontinuities and have mapped the associated emergent interfacial conductivity. In some instances, a dramatic change in microstructure occurs, involving local dipolar switching. A twist-induced collapse in the capability of the system to effec8tively screen interfacial bound charge is implied. Importantly, this only occurs around specific moiré twist angles with sparse coincident lattices and associated short-range aperiodicity. In quasicrystals, aperiodicity is known to induce pseudo-bandgaps and we suspect a similar phenomenon here.","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Nature Communications","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"citation":{"bibtex":"@article{Rogers_Holsgrove_Schäfer_Koppitz_McCluskey_Yedama_Lynch_Sloan_Porter_Sykes_et al._2026, title={Polar discontinuities, emergent conductivity, and critical twist-angle-dependent behaviour at wafer-bonded ferroelectric interfaces}, volume={17}, DOI={10.1038/s41467-026-68553-7}, number={11842}, journal={Nature Communications}, publisher={Springer Science and Business Media LLC}, author={Rogers, Andrew and Holsgrove, Kristina and Schäfer, Nils A. and Koppitz, Boris and McCluskey, Conor J. and Yedama, Shivani and Lynch, Ronan and Sloan, Keelan and Porter, Barry and Sykes, Adam and et al.}, year={2026} }","mla":"Rogers, Andrew, et al. “Polar Discontinuities, Emergent Conductivity, and Critical Twist-Angle-Dependent Behaviour at Wafer-Bonded Ferroelectric Interfaces.” Nature Communications, vol. 17, no. 1, 1842, Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2026, doi:10.1038/s41467-026-68553-7.","short":"A. In this study, a quinuclidine-based catalytic monomer (QMA) was synthesized to create polymer gel dots through the process of photopolymerization that serve as a support for the catalyst. The resulting gel-bound organocatalysts were assembled within a continuous microfluidic reactor to facilitate the Baylis–Hillman reaction between various aldehydes and acrylonitrile at a temperature of 50 °C. The conversion of the product was assessed using 1H NMR spectroscopy as an offline analytical method over a duration of 8 h. The findings indicated that highly reactive aldehydes achieved conversion rates exceeding 90%, in contrast to their less reactive counterparts. Furthermore, these results were juxtaposed with previously published data derived from alternative synthetic methodologies, revealing that the continuous microfluidic reactions employing integrated organocatalysts within polymer networks exhibited significantly higher conversions with reduced reaction times (8 h) at the same temperature (50 °C). Additionally, the influence of different geometries (round, triangular, and square) of the gel dots on catalytic activity was investigated, with round and square gel dots demonstrating slightly superior performance compared with triangular gel dots, attributed to their increased surface area. Moreover, an extended reaction period of 6 days was conducted using 4-bromobenzaldehyde and acrylonitrile, resulting in a conversion rate exceeding 70%, which remained stable for 5 days before experiencing a slight decline due to product accumulation on the gel dots.","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"ACS Omega","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"year":"2026","quality_controlled":"1","issue":"9","title":"Integrating an Organocatalyst into a Polymeric Gel Framework for the Continuous Microflow Baylis–Hillman Reaction","publisher":"American Chemical Society (ACS)","date_created":"2026-03-10T08:23:43Z"},{"volume":38,"author":[{"first_name":"Xiao","full_name":"Jin, Xiao","last_name":"Jin"},{"id":"30525","full_name":"Zentgraf, Thomas","last_name":"Zentgraf","orcid":"0000-0002-8662-1101","first_name":"Thomas"}],"oa":"1","date_updated":"2026-03-10T08:32:37Z","doi":"10.1002/adma.202511823","main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1","url":"https://advanced.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/adma.202511823"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["0935-9648","1521-4095"]},"publication_status":"published","intvolume":" 38","citation":{"short":"X. Extensive research has been conducted to enhance the multiplexing capacity for diverse wavefronts. However, the independence of multiplexed channels is fundamentally restricted in techniques using single‐layer metasurfaces, resulting in unavoidable crosstalk and the need for post‐filtering of the output wavefronts. Here, a universal wavefront multiplexing concept is presented based on non‐injective transformation. By employing joint optimization on two metasurfaces, different channels can be independently designed without any constraints on the output wavefronts. To validate this approach, ultra‐compact orbital angular momentum (OAM) sorters are designed. In these experiments, the output beams from different channels can be independently mapped to 2D positions with high fineness. In another application of wavefront‐multiplexed holography, 10‐channel multiplexing is experimentally achieved with minimal crosstalk and without the need for post‐processing. These results demonstrate the independence between channels enabled by the non‐injective transformation in the method.
