Our work is based on Binary Acceleration At Runtime (BAAR), our previously introduced binary acceleration mechanism that uses the LLVM Compiler Infrastructure. BAAR is designed as a client-server architecture. The client runs the program to be accelerated in an environment, which allows program analysis and profiling and identifies and extracts suitable program parts to be offloaded. The server compiles and optimizes these offloaded program parts for the accelerator and offers access to these functions to the client with a remote procedure call (RPC) interface. Our previous work proved the feasibility of our approach, but also showed that communication time and overheads limit the granularity of functions that can be meaningfully offloaded. In this work, we motivate the importance of a lightweight, high-performance communication between server and client and present a communication mechanism based on the Message Passing Interface (MPI). We evaluate our approach by using an Intel Xeon Phi 5110P as the acceleration target and show that the communication overhead can be reduced from 40% to 10%, thus enabling even small hotspots to benefit from offloading to an accelerator."}],"publication":"Proceedings of the 2015 Conference on Design, Automation and Test in Europe (DATE)","type":"conference","department":[{"_id":"27"},{"_id":"518"},{"_id":"78"}],"file":[{"creator":"florida","date_created":"2018-03-21T10:29:49Z","date_updated":"2018-03-21T10:29:49Z","relation":"main_file","access_level":"closed","file_size":380552,"file_name":"238-plessl15_date.pdf","content_type":"application/pdf","success":1,"file_id":"1500"}],"date_created":"2017-10-17T12:41:38Z","date_updated":"2023-09-26T13:31:44Z","year":"2015","title":"Transparent offloading of computational hotspots from binary code to Xeon Phi","author":[{"first_name":"Marvin","last_name":"Damschen","full_name":"Damschen, Marvin"},{"id":"8961","last_name":"Riebler","first_name":"Heinrich","full_name":"Riebler, Heinrich"},{"id":"30332","full_name":"Vaz, Gavin Francis","first_name":"Gavin Francis","last_name":"Vaz"},{"id":"16153","first_name":"Christian","last_name":"Plessl","orcid":"0000-0001-5728-9982","full_name":"Plessl, Christian"}],"doi":"10.7873/DATE.2015.1124","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"quality_controlled":"1","project":[{"grant_number":"160364472","_id":"1","name":"SFB 901"},{"grant_number":"160364472","_id":"14","name":"SFB 901 - Subprojekt C2"},{"_id":"4","name":"SFB 901 - Project Area C"},{"grant_number":"610996","_id":"34","name":"Self-Adaptive Virtualisation-Aware High-Performance/Low-Energy Heterogeneous System Architectures"}],"file_date_updated":"2018-03-21T10:29:49Z","citation":{"chicago":"Damschen, Marvin, Heinrich Riebler, Gavin Francis Vaz, and Christian Plessl. “Transparent Offloading of Computational Hotspots from Binary Code to Xeon Phi.” In Proceedings of the 2015 Conference on Design, Automation and Test in Europe (DATE), 1078–83. It is estimated that roughly 8000 GBT (GigaBit Transceiver) links, with transfer rates up to 10.24 Gbps, will replace existing links used for readout, detector control and distribution of timing and trigger information. A new class of devices will be needed to interface many GBT links to the rest of the trigger, data-acquisition and detector control systems. In this paper FELIX (Front End LInk eXchange) is presented, a PC-based device to route data from and to multiple GBT links via a high-performance general purpose network capable of a total throughput up to O(20 Tbps). FELIX implies architectural changes to the ATLAS data acquisition system, such as the use of industry standard COTS components early in the DAQ chain. Additionally the design and implementation of a FELIX demonstration platform is presented and hardware and software aspects will be discussed.","lang":"eng"}],"quality_controlled":"1","publication":"Journal of Physics: Conference Series","citation":{"chicago":"Anderson, J, A Borga, H Boterenbrood, H Chen, K Chen, G Drake, D Francis, et al. “FELIX: A High-Throughput Network Approach for Interfacing to Front End Electronics for ATLAS Upgrades.” Journal of Physics: Conference Series 664 (2015). https://doi.org/10.1088/1742-6596/664/8/082050.","short":"J. By developing a microscopic model of spin-dependent optical gain derived from an accurate electronic structure in a quantum-well-based laser, we study how its operation properties can be modified by spin-polarized carriers, carrier density, and resonant cavity design. We reveal that by applying a uniaxial strain, it is possible to attain a large birefringence. While such birefringence is viewed as detrimental in conventional lasers, it could enable fast polarization oscillations of the emitted light in spin lasers, which can be exploited for optical communication and high-performance interconnects. The resulting oscillation frequency (>200 GHz) would significantly exceed the frequency range possible in conventional lasers."}],"issue":"7","publication":"Physical Review B","type":"journal_article","department":[{"_id":"977"}],"date_created":"2025-04-25T10:17:25Z","publication_status":"published","date_updated":"2025-04-25T10:27:21Z","article_type":"original","intvolume":" 92","year":"2015","title":"Toward high-frequency operation of spin lasers","author":[{"last_name":"Faria Junior","first_name":"Paulo E.","full_name":"Faria Junior, Paulo E."},{"last_name":"Xu","first_name":"Gaofeng","full_name":"Xu, Gaofeng"},{"first_name":"Jeongsu","last_name":"Lee","full_name":"Lee, Jeongsu"},{"full_name":"Gerhardt, Nils Christopher","last_name":"Gerhardt","orcid":"0009-0002-5538-231X","first_name":"Nils Christopher","id":"115298"},{"full_name":"Sipahi, Guilherme M.","first_name":"Guilherme M.","last_name":"Sipahi"},{"last_name":"Žutić","first_name":"Igor","full_name":"Žutić, Igor"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["1098-0121","1550-235X"]},"doi":"10.1103/physrevb.92.075311","article_number":"075311","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"quality_controlled":"1","citation":{"ama":"Faria Junior PE, Xu G, Lee J, Gerhardt NC, Sipahi GM, Žutić I. The phonon density of states of the ferroelectric (paraelectric) phase shows two (one) distinct band gaps separating the high-frequency (~800 cm−1) optical branches from the continuum of acoustic and lower optical phonon states. This result leads to specific heat capacites in close agreement with experimental measurements in the range 0–350 K and a Debye temperature of 574 K. The calculated zero-point renormalization of the electronic Kohn–Sham eigenvalues reveals a strong dependence on the phonon wave vectors, especially near Γ. Integrated over all phonon modes, our results indicate a vibrational correction of the electronic band gap of 0.41 eV at 0 K, which is in excellent agreement with the extrapolated temperature-dependent measurements.","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter","issue":"38","department":[{"_id":"295"},{"_id":"296"},{"_id":"230"},{"_id":"429"},{"_id":"15"},{"_id":"35"},{"_id":"27"}],"type":"journal_article","date_created":"2019-05-29T08:41:18Z","file":[{"description":"© 2015 IOP Publishing Ltd","date_created":"2020-08-28T14:24:23Z","creator":"schindlm","title":"Phonon dispersion and zero-point renormalization of LiNbO3 from density-functional perturbation theory","content_type":"application/pdf","file_id":"18578","date_updated":"2020-08-30T14:46:56Z","relation":"main_file","file_size":1793430,"access_level":"closed","file_name":"Friedrich_2015_J._Phys. _Condens._Matter_27_385402.pdf"}],"has_accepted_license":"1","status":"public","volume":27,"user_id":"16199","ddc":["530"],"publisher":"IOP Publishing","_id":"10030","project":[{"_id":"52","name":"Computing Resources Provided by the Paderborn Center for Parallel Computing"},{"name":"TRR 142","_id":"53"},{"name":"TRR 142 - Project Area B","_id":"55"},{"name":"TRR 142 - Subproject B4","_id":"69"},{"_id":"52","name":"Computing Resources Provided by the Paderborn Center for Parallel Computing"}],"quality_controlled":"1","citation":{"mla":"Friedrich, Michael, et al. “Phonon Dispersion and Zero-Point Renormalization of LiNbO3 from Density-Functional Perturbation Theory.” Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter, vol. 27, no. 38, 385402, IOP Publishing, 2015, doi:10.1088/0953-8984/27/38/385402.","bibtex":"@article{Friedrich_Riefer_Sanna_Schmidt_Schindlmayr_2015, title={Phonon dispersion and zero-point renormalization of LiNbO3 from density-functional perturbation theory}, volume={27}, DOI={10.1088/0953-8984/27/38/385402}, number={38385402}, journal={Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter}, publisher={IOP Publishing}, author={Friedrich, Michael and Riefer, Arthur and Sanna, Simone and Schmidt, Wolf Gero and Schindlmayr, Arno}, year={2015} }","ama":"Friedrich M, Riefer A, Sanna S, Schmidt WG, Schindlmayr A. In particular, higher electron mobilities are observed in n-doped samples with monoclinic strain along the [110] direction, and experimental evidence relates this to changes in the effective mass as well as the scattering rates. To assess the relative importance of these two factors, we combine density-functional theory in the local-density approximation with the GW approximation for the electronic self-energy and investigate the effect of uniaxial and biaxial strains along the [110] direction on the structural and electronic properties of Si. Longitudinal and transverse components of the electron effective mass as a function of the strain are derived from fits to the quasiparticle band structure and a diagonalization of the full effective-mass tensor. The changes in the effective masses and the energy splitting of the conduction-band valleys for uniaxial and biaxial strains as well as their impact on the electron mobility are analyzed. The self-energy corrections within GW lead to band gaps in excellent agreement with experimental measurements and slightly larger effective masses than in the local-density approximation."}],"publication":"Advances in Condensed Matter Physics","type":"journal_article","department":[{"_id":"296"},{"_id":"35"},{"_id":"15"},{"_id":"170"},{"_id":"230"}],"file":[{"creator":"schindlm","description":"Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported Public License (CC BY 3.0)","date_created":"2020-08-28T09:42:44Z","date_updated":"2020-08-30T14:45:29Z","relation":"main_file","access_level":"open_access","file_size":560248,"file_name":"453125.pdf","title":"Ab initio study of strain effects on the quasiparticle bands and effective masses in silicon","content_type":"application/pdf","file_id":"18540"}],"date_created":"2020-08-27T20:45:37Z","publication_status":"published","date_updated":"2025-12-16T11:08:01Z","article_type":"original","intvolume":" 2015","year":"2015","title":"Ab initio study of strain effects on the quasiparticle bands and effective masses in silicon","publication_identifier":{"issn":["1687-8108"],"eissn":["1687-8124"]},"author":[{"full_name":"Bouhassoune, Mohammed","last_name":"Bouhassoune","first_name":"Mohammed"},{"first_name":"Arno","last_name":"Schindlmayr","orcid":"0000-0002-4855-071X","full_name":"Schindlmayr, Arno","id":"458"}],"doi":"10.1155/2015/453125","article_number":"453125","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"quality_controlled":"1","file_date_updated":"2020-08-30T14:45:29Z","citation":{"short":"M. Thus, this study examines the behavior of banks’ retail customers regarding non-maturing deposits. Our unique sample comprises the contract and cash flow data for 2.2 million individual contracts from 1991 to 2010. We find that contractual rewards, i.e., qualified interest payments, and government subsidies, effectively stabilize saving behavior and thus bank funding. The probability of an early deposit withdrawal decreases by approximately 40%, and cash flow volatility drops by about 25%. Our findings provide important insights for banks using pricing incentives to steer desired saving patterns for their non-maturing deposit portfolios. Finally, these results are informative regarding the bank liquidity regulations (Basel III) concerning the stability of deposits and the minimum requirements for risk management (European Commission DIRECTIVE 2006/48/EC).
