This operation is a crucial and time consuming operation when trying to break encryption systems with cold-boot attacks. In software, the reconstruction of the AES master key can be performed using a recursive, branch-and-bound tree-search algorithm that exploits redundancies in the key schedule for constraining the search space. In this work, we investigate how this branch-and-bound algorithm can be accelerated with FPGAs. We translated the recursive search procedure to a state machine with an explicit stack for each recursion level and create optimized datapaths to accelerate in particular the processing of the most frequently accessed tree levels. We support two different decay models, of which especially the more realistic non-idealized asymmetric decay model causes very high runtimes in software. Our implementation on a Maxeler dataflow computing system outperforms a software implementation for this model by up to 27x, which makes cold-boot attacks against AES practical even for high error rates."}],"date_created":"2017-10-17T12:42:05Z","file":[{"creator":"florida","date_created":"2018-03-20T07:14:20Z","access_level":"closed","file_size":1003907,"file_name":"377-FCCM14.pdf","date_updated":"2018-03-20T07:14:20Z","relation":"main_file","content_type":"application/pdf","success":1,"file_id":"1397"}],"department":[{"_id":"27"},{"_id":"518"},{"_id":"78"}],"type":"conference","keyword":["coldboot"],"status":"public","has_accepted_license":"1","_id":"377","publisher":"IEEE","page":"222-229","user_id":"15278","ddc":["040"],"citation":{"chicago":"Riebler, Heinrich, Tobias Kenter, Christian Plessl, and Christoph Sorge. “Reconstructing AES Key Schedules from Decayed Memory with FPGAs.” In Proceedings of Field-Programmable Custom Computing Machines (FCCM), 222–29. The generality of the paradigm makes it applicable to many types of computing systems and, previously, researchers started to introduce concepts of self-awareness to multicore architectures. In our work we build on a recent reference architectural framework as a model for self-aware computing and instantiate it for an FPGA-based heterogeneous multicore running the ReconOS reconfigurable architecture and operating system. After presenting the model for self-aware computing and ReconOS, we demonstrate with a case study how a multicore application built on the principle of self-awareness, autonomously adapts to changes in the workload and system state. Our work shows that the reference architectural framework as a model for self-aware computing can be practically applied and allows us to structure and simplify the design process, which is essential for designing complex future computing systems."}],"issue":"2","publication":"ACM Transactions on Reconfigurable Technology and Systems (TRETS)","doi":"10.1145/2617596","article_number":"13","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"date_updated":"2023-09-26T13:33:31Z","intvolume":" 7","year":"2014","title":"Self-awareness as a Model for Designing and Operating Heterogeneous Multicores","author":[{"full_name":"Agne, Andreas","last_name":"Agne","first_name":"Andreas"},{"full_name":"Happe, Markus","first_name":"Markus","last_name":"Happe"},{"id":"43646","full_name":"Lösch, Achim","first_name":"Achim","last_name":"Lösch"},{"full_name":"Plessl, Christian","last_name":"Plessl","orcid":"0000-0001-5728-9982","first_name":"Christian","id":"16153"},{"id":"398","full_name":"Platzner, Marco","first_name":"Marco","last_name":"Platzner"}]},{"abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"The ReconOS operating system for reconfigurable computing offers a unified multi-threaded programming model and operating system services for threads executing in software and threads mapped to reconfigurable hardware. However, whenthe sequential code is executed on a host CPU and only dataparallelloops are executed on an FPGA coprocessor, a sufficientlylarge number of loop iterations (trip counts) is required, such thatthe control- and data-transfer overheads to the coprocessor canbe amortized. However, the trip count of large data-parallel loopsis frequently not known at compile time, but only at runtime justbefore entering a loop. Therefore, we propose to generate codeboth for the CPU and the coprocessor, and to defer the decisionwhere to execute the appropriate code to the runtime of theapplication when the trip count of the loop can be determinedjust at runtime. We demonstrate how an LLVM compiler basedtoolflow can automatically insert appropriate decision blocks intothe application code. Analyzing popular benchmark suites, weshow that this kind of runtime decisions is often applicable. Thepractical feasibility of our approach is demonstrated by a toolflowthat automatically identifies loops suitable for vectorization andgenerates code for the FPGA coprocessor of a Convey HC-1. Thetoolflow adds decisions based on a comparison of the runtimecomputedtrip counts to thresholds for specific loops and alsoincludes support to move just the required data to the coprocessor. We evaluate the integrated toolflow with characteristic loopsexecuted on different input data sizes."}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"doi":"10.1109/ReConFig.2014.7032509","year":"2014","title":"Deferring Accelerator Offloading Decisions to Application Runtime","author":[{"last_name":"Vaz","first_name":"Gavin Francis","full_name":"Vaz, Gavin Francis","id":"30332"},{"last_name":"Riebler","first_name":"Heinrich","full_name":"Riebler, Heinrich","id":"8961"},{"first_name":"Tobias","last_name":"Kenter","full_name":"Kenter, Tobias","id":"3145"},{"orcid":"0000-0001-5728-9982","first_name":"Christian","last_name":"Plessl","full_name":"Plessl, Christian","id":"16153"}],"date_updated":"2023-09-26T13:37:02Z","file_date_updated":"2018-03-16T11:29:52Z","citation":{"bibtex":"@inproceedings{Vaz_Riebler_Kenter_Plessl_2014, title={Deferring Accelerator Offloading Decisions to Application Runtime}, DOI={10.1109/ReConFig.2014.7032509}, booktitle={Proceedings of the International Conference on ReConFigurable Computing and FPGAs (ReConFig)}, publisher={IEEE}, author={Vaz, Gavin Francis and Riebler, Heinrich and Kenter, Tobias and Plessl, Christian}, year={2014}, pages={1–8} }","ama":"Vaz GF, Riebler H, Kenter T, Plessl C. Presented solutions range from simple, very resource efficient systems with modest matching quality for small embedded systems to sophisticated algorithms with several processing steps, implemented on big FPGAs. In order to achieve high throughput, most implementations strongly focus on pipelining and data reuse between different computation steps. This approach leads to high efficiency, but limits the supported computation patterns and due the high integration of the implementation, adaptions to the algorithm are difficult. In this work, we present a stereo-matching implementation, that starts by offloading individual kernels from the CPU to the FPGA. Between subsequent compute steps on the FPGA, data is stored off-chip in on-board memory of the FPGA accelerator card. This enables us to accelerate the AD-census algorithm with cross-based aggregation and scanline optimization for the first time without algorithmic changes and for up to full HD image dimensions. Analyzing throughput and bandwidth requirements, we outline some trade-offs that are involved with this approach, compared to tighter integration of more kernel loops into one design.","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Proceedings of the International Conference on ReConFigurable Computing and FPGAs (ReConFig)"},{"citation":{"bibtex":"@inproceedings{C. However, a big lack is cleaving between the actual knowledge about C-S-H, compared to what could be reached using state-of-the-art technologies of modern research. In this article, the formation of a C-S-H phase on a native oxide covered silicon wafer is investigated by means of in-situ attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR) and ex-situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). The total thickness of the C-S-H phase is determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to be 3 nm. The formation appears to be reversible depending on the environment pH value and can be performed at room temperature. Based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations, it is shown that the C-S-H phase in the presence of water will change its chemical composition in order to reach the thermodynamic ground state of the system. This change is achieved by a metal-proton exchange reaction. The stoichiometry of these metal-proton exchange reactions is nearly independent of the environment pH value. Electrokinetic measurements yield isoelectric points of 2.0 and 2.6 for the native oxide covered silicon wafer (SiO2) and the C-S-H phase. This is consistent with a predominance of Si-O sites at the C-S-H/water interface. (C) 2013 Elsevier B. V. As a basis, we present a scalar‐valued phase‐transformation model where a Helmholtz free energy function depending on volumetric and deviatoric strain measures is assigned to each phase. The analysis of the related overall Gibbs energy density allows for the calculation of energy barriers. With these quantities at hand, we use a statistical‐physics‐based approach to determine the resulting evolution of volume fractions. Though the model facilitates to take into account an arbitrary number of solid phases of the underlying material, we restrict this work to the simulation of phase‐transformations between an austenitic parent phase and a martensitic tension and compression phase. The scalar model is embedded into a computational micro‐sphere formulation in view of the simulation of three‐dimensional boundary value problems. The final modelling approach necessary for macroscopic simulations is accomplished by a finite element formulation, where the local material behaviour at each integration point is governed by the response of the micro‐sphere model.Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
"}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"doi":"10.1002/nme.4601","year":"2014","title":"A Gibbs‐energy‐barrier‐based computational micro‐sphere model for the simulation of martensitic phase‐transformations","author":[{"orcid":"0000-0003-2147-8444","first_name":"Richard","last_name":"Ostwald","full_name":"Ostwald, Richard","id":"106876"},{"full_name":"Bartel, Thorsten","last_name":"Bartel","first_name":"Thorsten"},{"first_name":"Andreas","last_name":"Menzel","full_name":"Menzel, Andreas"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["0029-5981","1097-0207"]},"publication_status":"published","date_updated":"2025-12-03T13:14:32Z","intvolume":" 97","citation":{"bibtex":"@article{Ostwald_Bartel_Menzel_2014, title={A Gibbs‐energy‐barrier‐based computational micro‐sphere model for the simulation of martensitic phase‐transformations}, volume={97}, DOI={10.1002/nme.4601}, number={12}, journal={International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering}, publisher={Wiley}, author={Ostwald, Richard and Bartel, Thorsten and Menzel, Andreas}, year={2014}, pages={851–877} }","ama":"Ostwald R, Bartel T, Menzel A. As their energy reaches down to only a few meV, they are present at all temperatures and substantially influence the properties of magnetic systems. To study the spin excitations in solids from first principles, we have developed a computational scheme based on many-body perturbation theory within the full-potential linearized augmented plane-wave (FLAPW) method. The main quantity of interest is the dynamical transverse spin susceptibility or magnetic response function, from which magnetic excitations, including single-particle spin-flip Stoner excitations and collective spin-wave modes as well as their lifetimes, can be obtained. In order to describe spin waves we include appropriate vertex corrections in the form of a multiple-scattering T matrix, which describes the coupling of electrons and holes with different spins. The electron–hole interaction incorporates the screening of the many-body system within the random-phase approximation. To reduce the numerical cost in evaluating the four-point T matrix, we exploit a transformation to maximally localized Wannier functions that takes advantage of the short spatial range of electronic correlation in the partially filled d or f orbitals of magnetic materials. The theory and the implementation are discussed in detail. In particular, we show how the magnetic response function can be evaluated for arbitrary k points. This enables the calculation of smooth dispersion curves, allowing one to study fine details in the k dependence of the spin-wave spectra. We also demonstrate how spatial and time-reversal symmetry can be exploited to accelerate substantially the computation of the four-point quantities. As an illustration, we present spin-wave spectra and dispersions for the elementary ferromagnet bcc Fe, B2-type tetragonal FeCo, and CrO2 calculated with our scheme. The results are in good agreement with available experimental data.","lang":"eng"}],"file":[{"creator":"schindlm","description":"© 2014 Springer-Verlag, Berlin, Heidelberg","date_created":"2020-08-28T15:19:57Z","relation":"main_file","date_updated":"2020-08-30T14:48:45Z","file_name":"Friedrich2014_Chapter_SpinExcitationsInSolidsFromMan.pdf","access_level":"closed","file_size":1061365,"title":"Spin excitations in solids from many-body perturbation theory","file_id":"18584","content_type":"application/pdf"}],"date_created":"2020-08-27T21:00:45Z","type":"book_chapter","department":[{"_id":"296"},{"_id":"35"},{"_id":"15"},{"_id":"230"}],"status":"public","has_accepted_license":"1","page":"259-301","_id":"18471","publisher":"Springer","user_id":"16199","ddc":["530"],"volume":347,"editor":[{"full_name":"Di Valentin, Cristiana","first_name":"Cristiana","last_name":"Di Valentin"},{"first_name":"Silvana","last_name":"Botti","full_name":"Botti, Silvana"},{"first_name":"Matteo","last_name":"Cococcioni","full_name":"Cococcioni, Matteo"}],"file_date_updated":"2020-08-30T14:48:45Z","isi":"1","citation":{"mla":"Friedrich, Christoph, et al. “Spin Excitations in Solids from Many-Body Perturbation Theory.” First Principles Approaches to Spectroscopic Properties of Complex Materials, edited by Cristiana Di Valentin et al., vol. 347, Springer, 2014, pp. 259–301, doi:10.1007/128_2013_518.","bibtex":"@inbook{Friedrich_Şaşıoğlu_Müller_Schindlmayr_Blügel_2014, place={Berlin, Heidelberg}, series={ Topics in Current Chemistry}, title={Spin excitations in solids from many-body perturbation theory}, volume={347}, DOI={10.1007/128_2013_518}, booktitle={First Principles Approaches to Spectroscopic Properties of Complex Materials}, publisher={Springer}, author={Friedrich, Christoph and Şaşıoğlu, Ersoy and Müller, Mathias and Schindlmayr, Arno and Blügel, Stefan}, editor={Di Valentin, Cristiana and Botti, Silvana and Cococcioni, Matteo}, year={2014}, pages={259–301}, collection={ Topics in Current Chemistry} }","ama":"Friedrich C, Şaşıoğlu E, Müller M, Schindlmayr A, Blügel S.
