The architecture is based on the Xilinx Virtex-4 FX FPGA and leverages the Auxiliary Processing Unit (APU) as well as the partial reconfiguration capabilities to provide dynamically reconfigurable custom instructions. We also present a hardware tool flow that automatically translates software functions into custom instructions and a software tool flow that creates binaries using these instructions. While previous research on processors with reconfigurable functional units has been performed predominantly with simulation, the Woolcano architecture allows for exploring dynamic instruction set extension with commercially available hardware. Finally, we present a case study demonstrating a custom floating-point instruction generated with our approach, which achieves a 40x speedup over software-emulated floating-point operations and a 21% speedup over the Xilinx hardware floating-point unit. The Coulomb matrix is a central ingredient in implementations of many-body perturbation theory, such as the Hartree–Fock and GW approximations for the electronic self-energy or the random-phase approximation for the dielectric function. It is represented in the mixed product basis, which combines numerical muffin-tin functions and interstitial plane waves constructed from products of FLAPW basis functions. The interstitial plane waves are here expanded with the Rayleigh formula. The resulting algorithm is very efficient in terms of both computational cost and accuracy and is superior to an implementation with the Fourier transform of the step function. In order to allow an analytic treatment of the divergence at k=0 in reciprocal space, we expand the Coulomb matrix analytically around this point without resorting to a projection onto plane waves. Without additional approximations, we then apply a basis transformation that diagonalizes the Coulomb matrix and confines the divergence to a single eigenvalue. At the same time, response matrices like the dielectric function separate into head, wings, and body with the same mathematical properties as in a plane-wave basis. As an illustration we apply the formulas to electron-energy-loss spectra (EELS) for nickel at different k vectors including k=0. The convergence of the spectra towards the result at k=0 is clearly seen. Our all-electron treatment also allows to include transitions from 3s and 3p core states in the EELS spectrum that give rise to a shallow peak at high energies and lead to good agreement with experiment.","lang":"eng"}]},{"series_title":"Computer und Antike","language":[{"iso":"ger"}],"author":[{"full_name":"Droß-Krüpe, Kerstin","first_name":"Kerstin","last_name":"Droß-Krüpe","id":"125711"},{"first_name":"Stefanie","last_name":"Schmidt","full_name":"Schmidt, Stefanie"},{"first_name":"Christian","last_name":"Bärmann","full_name":"Bärmann, Christian"},{"full_name":"Bäcker, Sarah","last_name":"Bäcker","first_name":"Sarah"}],"title":"Hassia Exploranda. The (inter) personal benefits of intercultural experiences and skills are widely acknowledged. But can we really learn to be intercultural? Conceptually, the article draws on Bourdieu's notions of habitus and cultural capital. Within this framework, I regard people's attachments to country (and beyond) as learned and habituated, yet open to modification and reconstruction through reflexive agency, educational practices and the acquisition of intercultural capital."}],"extern":"1","date_created":"2026-08-23T17:10:54Z","type":"journal_article","status":"public","page":"537-545","_id":"66781","publisher":"Informa UK Limited","user_id":"77437","volume":35,"citation":{"chicago":"Pöllmann, Andreas. “Formal Education and Intercultural Capital: Towards Attachment beyond Narrow Ethno‐national Boundaries?” Educational Studies 35, no. 5 (2009): 537–45. https://doi.org/10.1080/03055690902880240.","short":"A. After a short characterisation of the two techniques and the identification of the main parameters, results of an analytical theory of local heat up, cooling, and heat diffusion are presented. The theory is based on a spherical model for hyperthermia with a critical thermal dose and on a cylinder-symmetrical model for thermo-ablation with a critical temperature threshold for thermal toxicity and cell death through coagulative necrosis. Two representative hard ware concepts are discussed. The hyperthermia applicator consists of a MHz transducer, which rotates concentrically in a water filled capsule with acoustically transparent window, and radiates collimated or focussed ultrasound under 45$\\,^{\\circ}$ into a concentric target area of nearly spherical symmetry. The applicator for thermo-ablation is a MHz transducer which radiates high intensity focussed ultrasound (HIFU) into \"cigar shaped\" target areas at the focal zone. Typical therapy diagrams for both techniques are presented. They show therapeutic target volumes as functions of the therapy time with the peak temperature or the radiated acoustic power as parameters. These diagrams are discussed under consideration of power requirement, maximal sound intensity, and power efficiency at close to optimized frequency conditions."}],"quality_controlled":"1","publication":"Acta Acustica united with Acustica","issue":"3","citation":{"bibtex":"@article{Lierke_Hemsel_2008, title={Local Ultrasonic Hyperthermia and Thermo-ablation: A Description and Theoretical Evaluation of Two Alternative Concepts for the Heat Therapy of Tumours}, volume={94}, DOI={10.3813/AAA.918044}, number={3}, journal={Acta Acustica united with Acustica}, author={Lierke, Ernst-Günter and Hemsel, Tobias}, year={2008}, pages={369–381} }","ama":"Lierke E-G, Hemsel T. To achieve drives that are capable, e.g., to drive the sunroof of a car or to lift a car's window, multiple miniaturized motors can be combined. Thus, the bundle of motors has to act well-organized and at last controlled to get an optimized drive that is not oversized and costly.","lang":"eng"}],"date_created":"2019-04-29T12:27:25Z","department":[{"_id":"151"}],"keyword":["Ultrasonic linear motor","High power","Control","Modeling","Characteristics"],"type":"journal_article","author":[{"full_name":"Mracek, Maik","last_name":"Mracek","first_name":"Maik"},{"id":"210","full_name":"Hemsel, Tobias","first_name":"Tobias","last_name":"Hemsel"},{"full_name":"Sattel, Thomas","first_name":"Thomas","last_name":"Sattel"},{"full_name":"Vasiljev, Piotr","last_name":"Vasiljev","first_name":"Piotr"},{"full_name":"Wallaschek, Jörg","first_name":"Jörg","last_name":"Wallaschek"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["1385-3449"]},"year":"2008","title":"Driving concepts for bundled ultrasonic linear motors","intvolume":" 20","date_updated":"2022-01-06T07:04:16Z","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"doi":"10.1007/s10832-007-9123-5"},{"date_updated":"2022-01-06T07:04:16Z","intvolume":" 20","year":"2008","title":"Tactile tissue characterisation by piezoelectric systems","author":[{"last_name":"Stroop","first_name":"Ralf","full_name":"Stroop, Ralf"},{"full_name":"Uribe, David Oliva","first_name":"David Oliva","last_name":"Uribe"},{"full_name":"Martinez, Melisa Orta","last_name":"Martinez","first_name":"Melisa Orta"},{"first_name":"Michael","last_name":"Brökelmann","full_name":"Brökelmann, Michael"},{"id":"210","full_name":"Hemsel, Tobias","first_name":"Tobias","last_name":"Hemsel"},{"full_name":"Wallaschek, Jörg","first_name":"Jörg","last_name":"Wallaschek"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["1385-3449"]},"doi":"10.1007/s10832-007-9183-6","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"For devices having non-linear contact, load plays a fundamental role. Variations in the characteristics of the load cause change in eigenfrequency and amplitude of the vibration. In most technical applications, this unwanted behaviour is cancelled by the use of control algorithms. However, multiple applications, like bond quality monitoring or chemical and pressure sensors, have found that the load may be characterised by interpreting the change in characteristics of a resonant vibrating device used as a sensor. Surgical resection of tumours is a very difficult task. After localising the tumour by the use of imaging techniques, the resection demands the surgeon to decide where and what to resect based on visual and tactile differentiation of tumour and healthy tissue. Exactness of this process could be enhanced if we can provide the surgeon with a device capable of evaluating mechanical characteristics of the tissue much more accurately than the surgeon himself can do. As the mechanical characteristics of tumour and healthy tissue differ but slightly, the task is to design a system with high sensitivity. Therefore, we have developed a resonant actuator-sensor that allows the differentiation among distinct media that have similar mechanical characteristics to tumour and healthy tissue using a piezoelectric bimorph. The design is based on the detection and evaluation of frequency shift and amplitude variation of the fundamental and higher harmonics using one layer for the resonant excitation of vibration and the other one as the sensing element."}],"issue":"3-4","publication":"Journal of Electroceramics","type":"journal_article","keyword":["Piezo ceramics","Bimorph","Tactile sensor","Tumour tissue"],"department":[{"_id":"151"}],"date_created":"2019-04-29T12:50:44Z","status":"public","user_id":"55222","volume":20,"page":"237-241","publisher":"Springer US","_id":"9574","quality_controlled":"1","citation":{"apa":"Stroop, R., Uribe, D. Within ultrasonic machining (drilling, milling, grinding) micro impacts lead to abrasion at the processed workpiece and hopefully do not damage the tool. In ultrasonic motors ideally neither part gets worn. Thus the appropriate design of contact partners as well as their kinematics is a substantial task during the development of such devices. A first step to optimize contact mechanics is to understand their behavior and dependencies on parameter variations, such as vibration amplitude and pre-stress of the impacting parts. For a detailed understanding models validated with convincing experimental data from measurements are absolutely essential. This paper focuses on simple vibro-impact experiments which can be used as benchmark data for future models. The setup of the experiment and first experimental investigations are described in detail.","lang":"eng"}],"_id":"9575","publisher":"Springer US","page":"209-214","volume":20,"user_id":"55222","status":"public","citation":{"chicago":"Twiefel, Jens, Christian Potthast, Maik Mracek, Tobias Hemsel, Thomas Sattel, and Jörg Wallaschek. “Fundamental Experiments as Benchmark Problems for Modeling Ultrasonic Micro-Impact Processes.” Journal of Electroceramics 20, no. 3–4 (2008): 209–14. https://doi.org/10.1007/s10832-007-9169-4.","short":"J.
