They are characterized by cascading effects with global and local interdependencies. Extreme data must be included as a basis for decision-making. The impact in emergency response depends on diverse, multidisciplinary competencies required to interpret information. Scenarios are used in various forms of preparation: in exercises, but also for the design of information systems and validation. Based on literature, this article brings together different types of scenarios and related work in the field of Model-Based Systems Engineering. Using an exemplary case relating to possible pluvial urban floods, the added value resulting from a focus on the impact of innovative solutions is discussed. It is shown that the use of scenarios helps to make the desired impact assessable for decision-makers in all phases of research and development projects.","lang":"eng"}],"project":[{"grant_number":"101092749","_id":"516","name":"CREXDATA: CREXDATA: Kritische Maßnahmenplanung über extreme Datenmengen"}],"user_id":"405","oa":"1","main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1","url":"https://ojs.iscram.org/index.php/Proceedings/article/view/108/93"}],"quality_controlled":"1","publication":"Proceedings of the 21st ISCRAM Conference (ISCRAM 2024)","type":"conference"},{"main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1","url":"https://dl.gi.de/server/api/core/bitstreams/0c0d419f-1676-466b-bc53-dd29781abbbe/content"}],"keyword":["extreme weather","emergency response","simulation","Augmented Reality"],"user_id":"405","oa":"1","project":[{"_id":"516","name":"CREXDATA: CREXDATA: Kritische Maßnahmenplanung über extreme Datenmengen","grant_number":"101092749"}],"abstract":[{"text":"Weather-induced emergencies are characterized by underlying weather phenomena, their evolution in time and space as well as their impact on the environment including people, nature and infrastructure. Typically, simulations are used to consider a variety of potential extreme weather scenarios in preparedness phases. Due to required computing power, duration and high efforts in parameterizing such tools are hardly used within response situations. Enhanced simulation models and surrogate models based on machine learning technologies carry potentials to overcome\r\nthese challenges. An approach is presented that adopts simulation for the case of flooding events. It considers all phases from demand situation in command posts through advanced parameter space exploration to advanced visualization of simulation results in Augmented Reality. Initial evaluation results are presented, complemented by conclusions on incorporated technologies. The former is an adaptive mesh refinement on the macroscale, which allows to control the spatial discretization errors. The latter is an efficient combination of a numerically low cost nonuniform transformation field analysis (NTFA) and numerically high cost full‐field elasto‐plastic homogenization methods on the microscale. The present contribution deals with the application of the concept of downwind and upwind approximations to a goal‐oriented a posteriori error estimator based on duality techniques by means of reduced order homogenization schemes like NTFA, and with accuracy and numerical efficiency of the proposed goal‐oriented adaptive framework. NTFA consists of an offline phase and an online phase. During the offline phase, some relevant information of the micro system under consideration is precomputed allowing a reduced set of equations to be solved in the online phase. Thus, NTFA leads to a quite efficient homogenization method but less accurate compared to the full‐field homogenization method which is characterized with a high computational demand for accounting nonlinear microstructural mechanisms. Due to nonlinearities and time‐dependency of plasticity, the estimation of error transport and error generation are obtained with a backward‐in‐time dual method despite a high demand on memory capacity. In this contribution, the dual problem is solved with a forward‐in‐time dual method that allows estimating the full error during the resolution of the primal problem without the need for extra memory capacity. Several numerical examples illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed adaptive approach based on downwind and upwind approximations.
"}]},{"_id":"56182","issue":"21","date_updated":"2024-09-19T11:53:57Z","date_created":"2024-09-19T11:53:38Z","publication":"bwp@","quality_controlled":"1","language":[{"iso":"ger"}],"type":"journal_article","year":"2024","status":"public","citation":{"apa":"Daniel-Söltenfuß, D. Our virtual environment consists of a digital shadow of the LMD-w production site enriched with additional measurement data shown on both static as well as handheld virtual displays. Users can explore the production site by enhanced teleportation capabilities that enable them to change their scale as well as their elevation above the ground plane. In an exploratory user study with 22 participants, we demonstrate that our system is generally suitable for the supervision of LMD-w processes while generating low task load and cybersickness. Especially when considering emergent phenomena, such as total weight or aerodynamics, a closely networked collaboration of discipline‐specific and cross‐disciplinary roles is required. Further, in large organizations with a group structure, resulting functional and non‐functional contents need to be managed by distinct Systems Engineering roles. For example, the role “property manager” takes care of achieving overarching product properties, such as weight or aerodynamics, which cannot be directly fixed, but result from many specifications. This paper proposes new Systems Engineering roles and their application in a German Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM). In Experiment 1, participants without basketball expertise (N = 25) watched a video of a basketball jump shot and were asked to release the space bar at the point when the ball leaves the player's fingertips (go-trials). In 25% of all trials, the video was stopped prematurely and participants should withhold their finger-lift response (stop-trials). A staircase-tracking algorithm was used to adjust the point-in-time when the jump shot was stopped in a way that participants’ inhibition rate was at 50% (reflecting the so called “point-of-no-return”, PNR). In Experiment 2, the stimulus material was adapted so that stop-trials simulated a pump fake. The PNR in Experiment 1 was located 187 ms and in Experiment 2 177 ms before the point of ball release. Precision performance benefit from practice across blocks and participants delayed their responses after stop-trials in a subsequent go-trial, which reflects strategic post-stop-trial adjustments. The numerical results obtained from standard viscoplastic material models exhibit mesh size dependency, requiring mathematical regularization. For this purpose, we present in this work a large deformation gradient theory for a viscoplastic isotropic material model published before. We extend our model to a micromorphic model by introducing a new micromorphic variable as an additional degree of freedom along with its first gradient. This variable represents a microequivalent plastic strain. The relation between the macroequivalent plastic strain and the micromorphic variable is accomplished by a micromorphic coupling modulus. This coupling forces proximity between the macro- and microvariables, leading to the targeted regularization effect. The micromorphic model is implemented as a three-dimensional initial boundary value problem in an in-house finite element tool. The analysis is performed for both uniaxial and biaxial specimens. The provided numerical examples show the ability of our model to regularize shear bands within the specimens and address the issue of localization.
","lang":"eng"}],"doi":"10.1007/s00419-024-02570-0"},{"type":"journal_article","publication":"The B.E. This article addresses these challenges and introduces the data awareness framework. It focuses on understanding data-driven technologies and reflecting on the role of data in everyday life. The paper also presents an empirical study on young school students' data awareness. The study involves a teaching unit on data awareness framed by a pretest-posttest design using a questionnaire on students' awareness and understanding of and reflection on data practices of data-driven digital artefacts. The study's findings indicate that the data awareness framework supports students in understanding data practices of data-driven digital artefacts. The findings also suggest that the framework encourages students to reflect on these data practices and think about their daily behaviour. Students learn a model about interactions with data-driven digital artefacts and use it to analyse data-driven applications. This approach appears to enable students to understand these artefacts from everyday life and reflect on these interactions. The work contributes to research on data and AI literacies and suggests a way to support students in developing self-determination and agency during interactions with data-driven digital artefacts.","lang":"eng"}],"doi":"10.1108/ils-06-2023-0075","page":"491-512","volume":125,"issue":"7/8","publication":"Information and Learning Sciences","ddc":["370"],"quality_controlled":"1","type":"journal_article","citation":{"bibtex":"@article{Höper_Schulte_2024, title={The data awareness framework as part of data literacies in K-12 education}, volume={125}, DOI={<a href=\"https://doi.org/10.1108/ils-06-2023-0075\">10.1108/ils-06-2023-0075</a>}, number={7/8}, journal={Information and Learning Sciences}, publisher={Emerald}, author={Höper, Lukas and Schulte, Carsten}, year={2024}, pages={491–512} }","mla":"Höper, Lukas, and Carsten Schulte. “The Data Awareness Framework as Part of Data Literacies in K-12 Education.” <i>Information and Learning Sciences</i>, vol. 125, no. 7/8, Emerald, 2024, pp. 491–512, doi:<a href=\"https://doi.org/10.1108/ils-06-2023-0075\">10.1108/ils-06-2023-0075</a>.","short":"L. However, in-depth analyses of the conceptualization of the model show that the specificities of the so-called dual subject matter of vocational education are not sufficiently represented. This article provides insights into the development and testing of an instrument for teachers’ self-assessment of digital competencies in vocational education. The instrument is based on the structure of TPACK but is adapted in various ways to reflect the specificities of vocational education. The aim of this article is to transfer a conceptual extension oft he TPACK model into an initial instrument\r\nand to analyze it as part of an initial exploration.\r\n"}]},{"doi":"10.1007/978-3-031-69766-1_9","abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"
Abstract
Most FPGA boards in the HPC domain are well-suited for parallel scaling because of the direct integration of versatile and high-throughput network ports. However, the utilization of their network capabilities is often challenging and error-prone because the whole network stack and communication patterns have to be implemented and managed on the FPGAs. Also, this approach conceptually involves a trade-off between the performance potential of improved communication and the impact of resource consumption for communication infrastructure, since the utilized resources on the FPGAs could otherwise be used for computations. In this work, we investigate this trade-off, firstly, by using synthetic benchmarks to evaluate the different configuration options of the communication framework ACCL and their impact on communication latency and throughput. Finally, we use our findings to implement a shallow water simulation whose scalability heavily depends on low-latency communication. With a suitable configuration of ACCL, good scaling behavior can be shown to all 48 FPGAs installed in the system. Overall, the results show that the availability of inter-FPGA communication frameworks as well as the configurability of framework and network stack are crucial to achieve the best application performance with low latency communication.
"}],"place":"Cham","author":[{"full_name":"Meyer, Marius","first_name":"Marius","last_name":"Meyer"},{"last_name":"Kenter","first_name":"Tobias","full_name":"Kenter, Tobias"},{"last_name":"Petrica","full_name":"Petrica, Lucian","first_name":"Lucian"},{"first_name":"Kenneth","full_name":"O’Brien, Kenneth","last_name":"O’Brien"},{"last_name":"Blott","first_name":"Michaela","full_name":"Blott, Michaela"},{"last_name":"Plessl","full_name":"Plessl, Christian","first_name":"Christian"}],"title":"Optimizing Communication for Latency Sensitive HPC Applications on up to 48 FPGAs Using ACCL","department":[{"_id":"27"},{"_id":"518"}],"oa":"1","user_id":"3145","publication_status":"published","main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1"}],"citation":{"mla":"Meyer, Marius, et al. “Optimizing Communication for Latency Sensitive HPC Applications on up to 48 FPGAs Using ACCL.” <i>Lecture Notes in Computer Science</i>, Springer Nature Switzerland, 2024, doi:<a href=\"https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-031-69766-1_9\">10.1007/978-3-031-69766-1_9</a>.","bibtex":"@inbook{Meyer_Kenter_Petrica_O’Brien_Blott_Plessl_2024, place={Cham}, title={Optimizing Communication for Latency Sensitive HPC Applications on up to 48 FPGAs Using ACCL}, DOI={<a href=\"https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-031-69766-1_9\">10.1007/978-3-031-69766-1_9</a>}, booktitle={Lecture Notes in Computer Science}, publisher={Springer Nature Switzerland}, author={Meyer, Marius and Kenter, Tobias and Petrica, Lucian and O’Brien, Kenneth and Blott, Michaela and Plessl, Christian}, year={2024} }","short":"M.
