Our virtual environment consists of a digital shadow of the LMD-w production site enriched with additional measurement data shown on both static as well as handheld virtual displays. Users can explore the production site by enhanced teleportation capabilities that enable them to change their scale as well as their elevation above the ground plane. In an exploratory user study with 22 participants, we demonstrate that our system is generally suitable for the supervision of LMD-w processes while generating low task load and cybersickness. Therefore, it serves as a first promising step towards the successful application of virtual reality technology in the comparatively young field of additive manufacturing."}],"publication":"Proceedings of the GI VR/AR Workshop 2024","department":[{"_id":"152"}],"type":"conference","date_created":"2024-09-23T09:30:34Z","date_updated":"2024-09-23T09:31:14Z","publication_status":"published","author":[{"full_name":"Rupp, Daniel","last_name":"Rupp","first_name":"Daniel"},{"last_name":"Kuhlen","first_name":"Torsten W.","full_name":"Kuhlen, Torsten W."},{"last_name":"Rarbach","first_name":"Sven","full_name":"Rarbach, Sven","id":"67999"},{"id":"67161","last_name":"Wiechel","first_name":"Dominik","full_name":"Wiechel, Dominik"},{"id":"405","full_name":"Pottebaum, Jens","last_name":"Pottebaum","first_name":"Jens","orcid":"http://orcid.org/0000-0001-8778-2989"},{"last_name":"Weidemann","first_name":"Tizia","full_name":"Weidemann, Tizia"},{"first_name":"Duc Thanh","last_name":"Tran","full_name":"Tran, Duc Thanh"},{"last_name":"Day","first_name":"Robin","full_name":"Day, Robin"},{"full_name":"Zielinski, Jonas","last_name":"Zielinski","first_name":"Jonas"},{"first_name":"Valentina","last_name":"König","full_name":"König, Valentina"},{"last_name":"Bremer","first_name":"Jan","full_name":"Bremer, Jan"},{"last_name":"Kosche","first_name":"Thomas","full_name":"Kosche, Thomas"},{"full_name":"Grimm, Andreas","last_name":"Grimm","first_name":"Andreas"},{"full_name":"Bergs, Thomas","last_name":"Bergs","first_name":"Thomas"},{"id":"47565","last_name":"Gräßler","orcid":"0000-0001-5765-971X","first_name":"Iris","full_name":"Gräßler, Iris"},{"full_name":"Weissker, Tim","first_name":"Tim","last_name":"Weissker"}],"year":"2024","title":"Virtual Reality as a Tool for Monitoring Additive Manufacturing Processes via Digital Shadows","doi":"10.18420/vrar2024_0006","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1"}]},{"publication":"EDeR – Educational Design Research","issue":"8","citation":{"ama":"Topalović E, Drepper L. Especially when considering emergent phenomena, such as total weight or aerodynamics, a closely networked collaboration of discipline‐specific and cross‐disciplinary roles is required. Further, in large organizations with a group structure, resulting functional and non‐functional contents need to be managed by distinct Systems Engineering roles. For example, the role “property manager” takes care of achieving overarching product properties, such as weight or aerodynamics, which cannot be directly fixed, but result from many specifications. This paper proposes new Systems Engineering roles and their application in a German Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM). For validation, the roles have already been applied in everyday engineering projects at the OEM. The concept proved to be indispensable and transferable to other Systems Engineering projects.
","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"INCOSE International Symposium","issue":"1","type":"conference","keyword":["Systems Engineering roles","properties","features","emergent phenomena","automotive"],"department":[{"_id":"152"}],"date_created":"2024-09-11T08:07:26Z","date_updated":"2024-09-11T08:22:55Z","publication_status":"published","intvolume":" 34","year":"2024","title":"Systems Engineering roles to handle emergent properties and behaviors in complex technical systems","publication_identifier":{"issn":["2334-5837","2334-5837"]},"author":[{"first_name":"Iris","orcid":"0000-0001-5765-971X","last_name":"Gräßler","full_name":"Gräßler, Iris","id":"47565"},{"full_name":"Pfeifer, Jan Niklas","last_name":"Pfeifer","first_name":"Jan Niklas","id":"62841"},{"full_name":"Hintz, Florian","first_name":"Florian","last_name":"Hintz"},{"full_name":"Meyrl, Nicolas","last_name":"Meyrl","first_name":"Nicolas"}],"doi":"10.1002/iis2.13164","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"quality_controlled":"1","citation":{"mla":"Gräßler, Iris, et al. “Systems Engineering Roles to Handle Emergent Properties and Behaviors in Complex Technical Systems.” INCOSE International Symposium, vol. 34, no. 1, Wiley, 2024, pp. 584–98, doi:10.1002/iis2.13164.","bibtex":"@inproceedings{Gräßler_Pfeifer_Hintz_Meyrl_2024, title={Systems Engineering roles to handle emergent properties and behaviors in complex technical systems}, volume={34}, DOI={10.1002/iis2.13164}, number={1}, booktitle={INCOSE International Symposium}, publisher={Wiley}, author={Gräßler, Iris and Pfeifer, Jan Niklas and Hintz, Florian and Meyrl, Nicolas}, year={2024}, pages={584–598} }","ama":"Gräßler I, Pfeifer JN, Hintz F, Meyrl N. In Experiment 1, participants without basketball expertise (N = 25) watched a video of a basketball jump shot and were asked to release the space bar at the point when the ball leaves the player's fingertips (go-trials). In 25% of all trials, the video was stopped prematurely and participants should withhold their finger-lift response (stop-trials). A staircase-tracking algorithm was used to adjust the point-in-time when the jump shot was stopped in a way that participants’ inhibition rate was at 50% (reflecting the so called “point-of-no-return”, PNR). In Experiment 2, the stimulus material was adapted so that stop-trials simulated a pump fake. The PNR in Experiment 1 was located 187 ms and in Experiment 2 177 ms before the point of ball release. Precision performance benefit from practice across blocks and participants delayed their responses after stop-trials in a subsequent go-trial, which reflects strategic post-stop-trial adjustments. “Uniaxial and Biaxial Experimental Investigation of Glassy Polymers.” Polymer 299 (2024). https://doi.org/10.1016/j.polymer.2024.126981.","short":"A. The numerical results obtained from standard viscoplastic material models exhibit mesh size dependency, requiring mathematical regularization. For this purpose, we present in this work a large deformation gradient theory for a viscoplastic isotropic material model published before. We extend our model to a micromorphic model by introducing a new micromorphic variable as an additional degree of freedom along with its first gradient. This variable represents a microequivalent plastic strain. The relation between the macroequivalent plastic strain and the micromorphic variable is accomplished by a micromorphic coupling modulus. This coupling forces proximity between the macro- and microvariables, leading to the targeted regularization effect. The micromorphic model is implemented as a three-dimensional initial boundary value problem in an in-house finite element tool. The analysis is performed for both uniaxial and biaxial specimens. The provided numerical examples show the ability of our model to regularize shear bands within the specimens and address the issue of localization.
"}],"page":"1221-1242","_id":"54280","publisher":"Springer Science and Business Media LLC","user_id":"57708","volume":94,"status":"public","citation":{"ama":"Hamdoun A, Mahnken R. This article addresses these challenges and introduces the data awareness framework. It focuses on understanding data-driven technologies and reflecting on the role of data in everyday life. The paper also presents an empirical study on young school students' data awareness. The study involves a teaching unit on data awareness framed by a pretest-posttest design using a questionnaire on students' awareness and understanding of and reflection on data practices of data-driven digital artefacts. The study's findings indicate that the data awareness framework supports students in understanding data practices of data-driven digital artefacts. The findings also suggest that the framework encourages students to reflect on these data practices and think about their daily behaviour. Students learn a model about interactions with data-driven digital artefacts and use it to analyse data-driven applications. This approach appears to enable students to understand these artefacts from everyday life and reflect on these interactions. The work contributes to research on data and AI literacies and suggests a way to support students in developing self-determination and agency during interactions with data-driven digital artefacts.","lang":"eng"}],"issue":"7/8","publication":"Information and Learning Sciences","volume":125,"user_id":"58041","ddc":["370"],"_id":"49655","publisher":"Emerald","page":"491-512","has_accepted_license":"1","status":"public","oa":"1","quality_controlled":"1","citation":{"apa":"Höper, L., & Schulte, C. However, the utilization of their network capabilities is often challenging and error-prone because the whole network stack and communication patterns have to be implemented and managed on the FPGAs. Also, this approach conceptually involves a trade-off between the performance potential of improved communication and the impact of resource consumption for communication infrastructure, since the utilized resources on the FPGAs could otherwise be used for computations. In this work, we investigate this trade-off, firstly, by using synthetic benchmarks to evaluate the different configuration options of the communication framework ACCL and their impact on communication latency and throughput. Finally, we use our findings to implement a shallow water simulation whose scalability heavily depends on low-latency communication. With a suitable configuration of ACCL, good scaling behavior can be shown to all 48 FPGAs installed in the system. Overall, the results show that the availability of inter-FPGA communication frameworks as well as the configurability of framework and network stack are crucial to achieve the best application performance with low latency communication.
"}],"publication":"Lecture Notes in Computer Science","doi":"10.1007/978-3-031-69766-1_9","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1"}],"publication_status":"published","date_updated":"2024-10-14T07:55:50Z","publication_identifier":{"issn":["0302-9743","1611-3349"],"isbn":["9783031697654","9783031697661"]},"author":[{"first_name":"Marius","last_name":"Meyer","full_name":"Meyer, Marius"},{"last_name":"Kenter","first_name":"Tobias","full_name":"Kenter, Tobias"},{"first_name":"Lucian","last_name":"Petrica","full_name":"Petrica, Lucian"},{"full_name":"O’Brien, Kenneth","last_name":"O’Brien","first_name":"Kenneth"},{"last_name":"Blott","first_name":"Michaela","full_name":"Blott, Michaela"},{"last_name":"Plessl","first_name":"Christian","full_name":"Plessl, Christian"}],"year":"2024","title":"Optimizing Communication for Latency Sensitive HPC Applications on up to 48 FPGAs Using ACCL"},{"date_created":"2024-10-14T07:49:24Z","department":[{"_id":"27"},{"_id":"518"}],"type":"conference","citation":{"chicago":"Opdenhövel, Jan-Oliver, Christoph Alt, Christian Plessl, and Tobias Kenter. “StencilStream: A SYCL-Based Stencil Simulation Framework Targeting FPGAs.” In 2024 34th International Conference on Field-Programmable Logic and Applications (FPL). The intensive computation and bandwidth demand for ERI evaluation presents a significant challenge for quantum-mechanics-based atomistic simulations with hybrid density functional theory: due to the tens of trillions of ERI computations in each time step, practical applications are usually limited to thousands of atoms. In this work, we propose SERI, a high-throughput streaming accelerator for ERI computation on HBM-based FPGAs. In contrast to prior buffer-based designs, SERI proposes a novel streaming architecture to address the on-chip buffer limitation and the floorplanning challenge, and leverages the high-bandwidth memory to overcome the bandwidth bottleneck in prior designs. Moreover, to meet the varying computation, bandwidth, and floorplanning requirements between the 55 canonical quartet classes in ERI calculation, we design an automation tool, together with an accurate performance model, to automatically customize the architecture and floorplanning strategy for each canonical quartet class to maximize their throughput. Our performance evaluation on the AMD/Xilinx Alveo U280 FPGA board shows that, SERI achieves an average speedup of 9.80 x over the previous best-performing FPGA design, a 3.21x speedup over a 64-core AMD EPYC 7713 CPU, and a 15.64x speedup over an Nvidia A40 GPU. It reaches a peak throughput of 23.8 GERIS ($10^9$ ERIs per second) on one Alveo U280 FPGA. A bending beam is used as a nonlinear test object. A design and a surrogate model of the test rig are shown and parameterized based on test rig measurements. The force control algorithm using input/output linearisation is described and implemented in Matlab/Simulink for simulative validation studies. Conclusions drawn from the mathematical description of the problem as well as simulation results show that the design of the contact between shaker and test object is crucial to achieve a high control bandwidth and at the same time reduce the energy consumption of the shaker. This leads to the practical application using a novel damping contact element. Finally, experimental test rig results are presented which show a closed loop bandwidth of at least 250 Hz for sinusoidal excitation signals.
","lang":"eng"}],"date_created":"2024-10-14T08:11:05Z","type":"journal_article","department":[{"_id":"153"}],"status":"public","publisher":"Springer Science and Business Media LLC","_id":"56608","user_id":"22675","volume":88,"citation":{"short":"C. This study presents a novel approach to prevent expulsion by employing a preheating current. Through characteristic analysis of joint formation under critical welding current, the importance of plastic material encapsulation around the weld nugget (plastic shell) at high temperatures in preventing expulsion is highlighted. To evaluate the effect of preheating on the plastic shell and understand its mechanism in expulsion prevention, a two-dimensional welding simulation model for dissimilar ultra-high strength steel joints was established. The results showed that optimal preheating enhances the thickness of the plastic shell, improving its ability to encapsulate the weld nugget during the primary welding phase, thereby diminishing expulsion risks. Experimental validation confirmed that by employing the optimal preheating current, the maximum nugget diameter was enhanced to 9.42 mm, marking an increase of 13.4 % and extending the weldable current range by 27.5 %. Under quasi-static cross-tensile loading, joints with preheating demonstrated a 7.9 % enhancement in maximum load-bearing capacity compared to joints without preheating, showing a reproducible and complete pull-out failure mode within the heat-affected zone. This study offers a prevention method based on underlying mechanisms, providing a new perspective for future research on welding parameter optimization with the aim of expulsion prevention.","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Journal of Manufacturing Processes","doi":"10.1016/j.jmapro.2024.06.034","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1","url":"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1526612524006145"}],"intvolume":" 124","article_type":"original","date_updated":"2024-10-18T06:59:27Z","publication_status":"published","publication_identifier":{"issn":["1526-6125"]},"author":[{"id":"65085","last_name":"Yang","first_name":"Keke","orcid":"0000-0001-9201-9304","full_name":"Yang, Keke"},{"full_name":"El-Sari, Bassel","last_name":"El-Sari","first_name":"Bassel"},{"id":"5974","last_name":"Olfert","first_name":"Viktoria","full_name":"Olfert, Viktoria"},{"full_name":"Wang, Zhuoqun","last_name":"Wang","first_name":"Zhuoqun"},{"full_name":"Biegler, Max","last_name":"Biegler","first_name":"Max"},{"last_name":"Rethmeier","first_name":"Michael","full_name":"Rethmeier, Michael"},{"full_name":"Meschut, Gerson","first_name":"Gerson","orcid":"0000-0002-2763-1246","last_name":"Meschut","id":"32056"}],"year":"2024","title":"Expulsion prevention in resistance spot welding of dissimilar joints with ultra-high strength steel: An analysis of the mechanism and effect of preheating current","oa":"1","quality_controlled":"1","citation":{"mla":"Yang, Keke, et al. “Expulsion Prevention in Resistance Spot Welding of Dissimilar Joints with Ultra-High Strength Steel: An Analysis of the Mechanism and Effect of Preheating Current.” Journal of Manufacturing Processes, vol. 124, Elsevier BV, 2024, pp. 489–502, doi:10.1016/j.jmapro.2024.06.034.","ama":"Yang K, El-Sari B, Olfert V, et al.
