text: "In practical, large-scale networks, services are requested\r\nby users across
the globe, e.g., for video streaming.\r\nServices consist of multiple interconnected
components such as\r\nmicroservices in a service mesh. Coordinating these services\r\nrequires
scaling them according to continuously changing user\r\ndemand, deploying instances
at the edge close to their users,\r\nand routing traffic efficiently between users
and connected instances.\r\nNetwork and service coordination is commonly addressed\r\nthrough
centralized approaches, where a single coordinator\r\nknows everything and coordinates
the entire network globally.\r\nWhile such centralized approaches can reach global
optima, they\r\ndo not scale to large, realistic networks. In contrast, distributed\r\napproaches
scale well, but sacrifice solution quality due to their\r\nlimited scope of knowledge
and coordination decisions.\r\n\r\nTo this end, we propose a hierarchical coordination
approach\r\nthat combines the good solution quality of centralized approaches\r\nwith
the scalability of distributed approaches. In doing so, we divide\r\nthe network
into multiple hierarchical domains and optimize\r\ncoordination in a top-down
manner. We compare our hierarchical\r\nwith a centralized approach in an extensive
evaluation on a real-world\r\nnetwork topology. Our results indicate that hierarchical\r\ncoordination
can find close-to-optimal solutions in a fraction of\r\nthe runtime of centralized
    approaches."

text: Word embedding models reflect bias towards genders, ethnicities, and other
social groups present in the underlying training data. Metrics such as ECT, RNSB,
and WEAT quantify bias in these models based on predefined word lists representing
social groups and bias-conveying concepts. How suitable these lists actually are
to reveal bias - let alone the bias metrics in general - remains unclear, though.
In this paper, we study how to assess the quality of bias metrics for word embedding
models. In particular, we present a generic method, Bias Silhouette Analysis (BSA),
that quantifies the accuracy and robustness of such a metric and of the word lists
used. Given a biased and an unbiased reference embedding model, BSA applies the
metric systematically for several subsets of the lists to the models. The variance
and rate of convergence of the bias values of each model then entail the robustness
of the word lists, whereas the distance between the models' values gives indications
of the general accuracy of the metric with the word lists. We demonstrate the
behavior of BSA on two standard embedding models for the three mentioned metrics
with several word lists from existing research.

text: In January 2021, the GameStop stock was the epicenter of the first case of
predatory trading initiated by retail investors. We use brokerage accounts to
study who participated in this GameStop frenzy and how they performed. We investigate
the extent to which investors’ personal and trading characteristics differ from
the general population of retail investors. GameStop traders had a history of
investing in speculative instruments, including stocks with lottery-like features.
They were also more likely to close their positions before the peak of the bubble.
At the onset of the frenzy, numerous retail investors also shorted GameStop. Overall,
our results indicate that the GameStop frenzy was not a pure digital protest against
Wall Street but speculative trading by a group of retail investors, in line with
    their prior high-risk trading behavior.

text: Topological states of light represent counterintuitive optical modes localized
at boundaries of finite-size optical structures that originate from the properties
of the bulk. Being defined by bulk properties, such boundary states are insensitive
to certain types of perturbations, thus naturally enhancing robustness of photonic
circuitries. Conventionally, the N-dimensional bulk modes correspond to (N – 1)-dimensional
boundary states. The higher-order bulk-boundary correspondence relates N-dimensional
bulk to boundary states with dimensionality reduced by more than 1. A special
interest lies in miniaturization of such higher-order topological states to the
nanoscale. Here, we realize nanoscale topological corner states in metasurfaces
with C6-symmetric honeycomb lattices. We directly observe nanoscale topology-empowered
edge and corner localizations of light and enhancement of light–matter interactions
via a nonlinear imaging technique. Control of light at the nanoscale empowered
by topology may facilitate miniaturization and on-chip integration of classical
    and quantum photonic devices.

text: We realize and investigate a nonlinear metasurface taking advantage of intersubband
transitions in ultranarrow GaN/AlN multi-quantum well heterostructures. Owing
to huge band offsets, the structures offer resonant transitions in the telecom
window around 1.55 µm. These heterostructures are functionalized with an array
of plasmonic antennas featuring cross-polarized resonances at these near-infrared
wavelengths and their second harmonic. This kind of nonlinear metasurface allows
for substantial second-harmonic generation at normal incidence which is completely
absent for an antenna array without the multi-quantum well structure underneath.
While the second harmonic is originally radiated only into the plane of the quantum
wells, a proper geometrical arrangement of the plasmonic elements permits the
redirection of the second-harmonic light to free-space radiation, which is emitted
    perpendicular to the surface.

text: The containment of COVID-19 critically hinges on individuals’ behavior. We
investigate how individuals react to variations in COVID-19 reporting. Using a
survey, we elicit individuals' perceived infection risk given various COVID-19
metrics (e.g., confirmed cases, reproduction rate, or case-fatality ratio). We
proxy individuals' risk perception with their willingness to pay for the participation
in everyday life and amusements events. We find that participants react to different
COVID-19 metrics with varying sensitivity. We observe a saturation of sensitivity
for several measures at critical limits used in the political discussion, making
our results highly relevant for policy makers in their efforts to direct individuals
to adhere to hygienic etiquette and social distancing guidelines.

text: Topological photonic crystals (TPhCs) provide robust manipulation of light
with built-in immunity to fabrication tolerances and disorder. Recently, it was
shown that TPhCs based on weak topology with a dislocation inherit this robustness
and further host topologically protected lower-dimensional localized modes. However,
TPhCs with weak topology at optical frequencies have not been demonstrated so
far. Here, we use scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy to verify
mid-bandgap zero-dimensional light localization close to 100 THz in a TPhC with
nontrivial Zak phase and an edge dislocation. We show that because of the weak
topology, differently extended dislocation centers induce similarly strong light
localization. The experimental results are supported by full-field simulations.
Along with the underlying fundamental physics, our results lay a foundation for
the application of TPhCs based on weak topology in active topological nanophotonics,
and nonlinear and quantum optic integrated devices because of their strong and
    robust light localization.

text: Graph neural networks (GNNs) have been successfully applied in many structured
data domains, with applications ranging from molecular property prediction to
the analysis of social networks. Motivated by the broad applicability of GNNs,
we propose the family of so-called RankGNNs, a combination of neural Learning
to Rank (LtR) methods and GNNs. RankGNNs are trained with a set of pair-wise preferences
between graphs, suggesting that one of them is preferred over the other. One practical
application of this problem is drug screening, where an expert wants to find the
most promising molecules in a large collection of drug candidates. We empirically
demonstrate that our proposed pair-wise RankGNN approach either significantly
outperforms or at least matches the ranking performance of the naive point-wise
baseline approach, in which the LtR problem is solved via GNN-based graph regression.

  text:
Wood fiber reinforcement of plastics is almost limited to polypropylene,
polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride and polystyrene. Wood fiber reinforcement of
thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU) is a new research field and paltry studied scientifically.
Wood fiber reinforcement can carry out synergistic effects between sustainability,
material or product price reduction, improved mechanical properties at high elongation,
and brilliant appearance and haptics. In order to evaluate to what extent the
improvement of mechanical properties depend on material-specific parameters (fiber
type, fiber content) and on process-specific parameters (holding pressure, temperature
control and injection speed), differently filled compounds were injection molded
according to a partial factorial test plan and subjected to characterizing test
procedures (tensile test, Shore hardness and notched impact test). Tensile strength
showed significant dependence on barrel temperature, fiber type and interaction
between holding pressure and barrel temperature in the region of interest. Young’s
modulus can be influenced by fiber content but not by fiber type. Notched impact
strength showed a significant influence of cylinder temperature, fiber content,
fiber type and the interaction between cylinder temperature and fiber content
in the region of interest. Shore hardness is related to fiber content and the
interaction between mold temperature and injection flow rate. Our results show
not only that wood-filled TPU can be processed very well by injection molding,
but also that the mechanical properties depend significantly on temperature control
in the injection-molding process. Moreover, considering the significant reinforcing
effect of the wood fibers, a good fiber-matrix adhesion can be assumed.
