Philosophy of technology holds that adequate understanding of such artifacts requires grasping both of these sides and their connection, yet little empirical work has examined whether and how people actually navigate this dual nature when explaining artifacts to one another. This dissertation investigates everyday face-to-face explanations of a technical artifact, the board game Quarto, through four cumulative Building Blocks (BB1–BB4). The analytical lens is the Co-Constructive Dual Nature Framework developed herein, which distinguishes two perspectives on the artifact, Architecture (how it works) and Relevance (what it is for). Their interplay is examined along three criteria: a dual-perspective criterion concerning the need to address both perspectives, a collaborative criterion concerning the co-constructive dynamics between explainer and explainee, and a cognitive criterion concerning the epistemic modes of construal that underlie perspective selection. BB1 establishes intonation-phrase segmentation as a reliable transcription basis for the qualitative coding of utterances addressing the dual nature in explanation content. BB2 documents a robust Architecture-dominant pattern in naturalistic explanations, with explainers producing approximately 60–70% Architecture content and communicating it as a prerequisite for Relevance. BB3 shows that this baseline persists even under systematic co-constructive pressure from explainees signalling, for example, Relevance interest, though partial adaptation occurs. BB4 experimentally tests the effect of explanatory approach on recipients’ understanding: Architecture-focused and Relevance-focused explanations produce equivalent comprehension, but only integrated explanations that connect both yield significantly higher enabledness with the artifact. The central finding is a tension between explanatory default and explanatory need: the approach that yields enabledness and thus produces the deepest understanding demands the integration of both perspectives. In the naturalistic explanations (BB2), this integration was not reliably produced. This tension carries consequences for computing and technology education, where curricula that separate Architecture from Relevance risk failing to sufficiently foster integrative understanding, and thereby risk falling short of educational aims such as self-determination. Explainable AI is likewise affected: when, for instance, feature importances are used to generate counterfactual explanations, these may support comprehension but not the agency that people who interact with opaque but consequential systems require."}],"place":"Paderborn","date_created":"2026-09-22T14:12:57Z","department":[{"_id":"67"}],"type":"dissertation","author":[{"id":"37320","first_name":"Lutz","last_name":"Terfloth","full_name":"Terfloth, Lutz"}],"year":"2026","status":"public","title":"Between how it works and what it's for: an analysis of everyday explanations of a technical artifact","date_updated":"2026-09-22T14:16:03Z","publication_status":"published","_id":"67231","publisher":"Universitätsbibliothek Paderborn","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"doi":"10.17619/UNIPB/1-2680","user_id":"37320"},{"citation":{"mla":"Kassab, Amin, and Thomas Gries. “Energy Transition and Economic Growth in Low-Income Countries: The Role of Climate Finance.” <i>Financial Innovation</i>, vol. 12, no. 1, 159, Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2026, doi:<a href=\"https://doi.org/10.1186/s40854-026-00963-4\">10.1186/s40854-026-00963-4</a>.","ama":"Kassab A, Gries T. The energy supply for their growing economies largely originates from the burning of fossil fuels. To avoid accelerating global greenhouse gas emissions, it is crucial that low-income countries enter a low-carbon growth path through the large-scale deployment of renewable energy. This is particularly relevant in countries that import fossil energy resources from global markets, where renewable energy deployment could be a tool for achieving independence and economic development. It can be beneficial in the short-run, for low-income countries with limited access to finance to rely on existing energy infrastructure. However, investment in renewable energy provides a long-run solution to preventing carbon lock-in by expanding existing infrastructure, such as pipelines or refineries. Therefore, we develop a theoretical model for long-run economic growth in import-dependent low-income countries. To produce renewable energy, a country must either attract international climate finance funds or substitute for other investments in the domestic economy to build a renewable energy capital stock. The results imply that sufficient and stable access to climate finance funds to transition to renewable energy accelerates long-run economic growth and welfare. Conversely, when investments in the energy transition crowds-out investment from other productive sectors in the economy, financing the energy transition can lead to income losses between 15 and 20% in the short- to medium-run. However, the energy transition does stimulate economic growth and welfare with an optimal allocation of capital in the long run. Furthermore, insufficient access to climate finance leads to rebound effects, accelerating demand for fossil energy and carbon emissions.
","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Financial Innovation","issue":"1","type":"journal_article","department":[{"_id":"200"},{"_id":"202"}],"date_created":"2026-09-24T09:23:03Z","publication_status":"published","date_updated":"2026-09-24T10:21:12Z","intvolume":" 12","title":"Energy transition and economic growth in low-income countries: the role of climate finance","year":"2026","author":[{"id":"98377","last_name":"Kassab","first_name":"Amin","full_name":"Kassab, Amin"},{"first_name":"Thomas","last_name":"Gries","full_name":"Gries, Thomas","id":"186"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["2199-4730"]},"doi":"10.1186/s40854-026-00963-4","article_number":"159","language":[{"iso":"eng"}]},{"date_updated":"2026-09-24T07:00:03Z","publication_status":"published","year":"2026","title":" Erwachsenenbildung im Kontext des Pädagogikunterrichts. This paper analyses temperature-specific waste heat potentials in automotive factories, distinguishing between vehicle assembly and component production. Waste heat sources are classified according to their integration feasibility, differentiating between directly usable heat and lower-temperature heat requiring upgrading via heat pumps. Using real-world operational data from eight automotive factories, waste heat potentials are quantified relative to site-specific heat demand. The results show that vehicle assembly factories exhibit relatively homogeneous shares of directly usable waste heat, while indirectly usable potentials vary strongly across sites, particularly in component manufacturing. To capture temporal utilisation constraints, a time-resolved case study is conducted for one vehicle assembly factory, combining hourly waste heat availability, internal heat demand and the load of an external district heating network. The dynamic analysis indicates that a substantial share of available waste heat can be utilised internally over the year, including periods of full internal heat coverage, while only limited surpluses remain available for external use. Overall, the findings underline the importance of factory-level, time-resolved analyses for identifying realistically utilisable waste heat shares and for supporting site-specific planning of waste heat integration under realistic constraints, thereby supporting the decarbonisation of industrial and urban thermal energy systems."}],"publication":"International Sustainable Energy Conference","citation":{"chicago":"Berendes, Manuel, Patrick Dehning, and Alexander Schlüter. “Waste Heat Utilisation in Automotive Factories.” In <i>International Sustainable Energy Conference</i>, edited by Christian Fink and Christoph Brunner.
"}],"date_created":"2026-09-29T13:08:12Z","department":[{"_id":"33"}],"keyword":["Lehrkräfteausbildung","Schulische Beratung","Handlungsorientierung","Performanztest","OSTE"],"type":"dissertation","author":[{"first_name":"Philipp","last_name":"Wotschel","full_name":"Wotschel, Philipp"}],"publication_identifier":{"isbn":["9783832561444"]},"title":"Entwicklung und Validierung einer rollenspielbasierten Simulation (RobS) – Ein Prüfungsformat zur Erfassung von Beratungskompetenz im bildungswissenschaftlichen Lehramtsstudium","year":"2026","status":"public","publication_status":"published","date_updated":"2026-09-29T13:14:35Z","publisher":"Logos Verlag Berlin","_id":"67280","language":[{"iso":"ger"}],"user_id":"89529","doi":"10.30819/6144"},{"abstract":[{"text":"Despite the pivotal role of tax legislation for the economy and society, empirical research on how interest groups influence German tax legislation remains scarce. This study addresses this gap by examining international corporate tax policy. Based on 94 statements from eleven legislative procedures (2013- 2023), it analyzes the factors determining whether demands from various interest groups during expert hearings in the Finance Committee are adopted into final legislation. Methodologically, the paper combines qualitative content analysis with a quantitative probit regression. While descriptive data and initial analyses suggest varying success rates among expert groups, these differences disappear when controlling for the specific direction of the proposed changes. No significant group influence remains. The findings suggest that in the later stages of the legislative process, lawmakers select external expertise primarily based on substantive, technical criteria rather than systematically favoring specific actors. Thus, the study contributes to the political economy of taxation by highlighting the importance of technical content over pure actor power.","lang":"eng"}],"citation":{"chicago":"Zimmermann, Thomas. <i>Junior Management Science</i> 11, no. 3 (2026): 671–91.","short":"T. We thus aimed to assess the association between dietary factors and estimated 10-year cardiovascular disease risk across diabetes subtypes in the German Diabetes Study (GDS). Participants with recent-onset diabetes and from the 5-year follow-up examination were combined (n=635, mean age 47.5±12.9 years, 60% male) and classified into diabetes subtypes. Subtypes with prevalence &gt;10% were included in cross-sectional analyses: severe autoimmune diabetes (39%), mild obesity-related diabetes (31%), and mild age-related diabetes (30%). Carbohydrate quality parameters and adherence to dietary patterns were assessed from food frequency questionnaires. Differences in associations between these dietary factors and 10-year cardiovascular risk estimated by SCORE2-Diabetes across subtypes were examined using multivariable-adjusted linear regression models including an interaction term. In people with severe autoimmune diabetes, the overall and the healthful plant-based diet index were associated with lower estimated 10-year cardiovascular risk (ß [95% CI] -6.8 [-12.1; -1.2] and -8.8% [-14.0; -3.2] per 1-standard deviation increases, respectively), while these associations were not evident among the remaining two subtypes (p-value for interaction between subtypes &lt;0.05). Our findings suggest subtype-specific associations of plant-based dietary patterns with estimated cardiovascular risk, warranting further research from longitudinal and intervention studies.\r\n Trial registration:\r\n Clinicaltrials.gov: NCT01055093\r\n
","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Scientific Reports","issue":"1"},{"date_created":"2026-09-30T13:09:59Z","type":"conference","department":[{"_id":"424"}],"publication":"Proceedings of the 1st Workshop on Explainability, Transparency, and Safety (ExTraSafe) at ","citation":{"ieee":"J. In the context of dynamic mechanical systems, this enables the compensation of modeling inaccuracies that arise from simplifications, missing effects, or uncertain parameters. In this work, a hybrid model is used as a starting point, in which the discrepancy between simulation and measurement is learned and compensated by a data‐driven correction element. To integrate such models into commercial multibody simulation software like Adams or Simpack, the formulation is adapted to operate directly on the force level. This allows implementation via standard co‐simulation interfaces without modifying the system's differential equations or solvers. The method is demonstrated using a three‐mass oscillator with synthetic measurement data. Results show that the coupled simulation works reliably and that the hybrid model significantly improves accuracy while remaining compatible with established industrial simulation workflows.
","lang":"eng"}],"date_created":"2026-10-01T08:31:35Z","department":[{"_id":"151"}],"type":"journal_article","status":"public","_id":"67294","publisher":"Wiley","volume":26,"user_id":"43991","citation":{"chicago":"Wohlleben, Meike Claudia, Jill Mercedes Linneweber, Jan Schütte, and Walter Sextro. “Enabling Hybrid Modeling in Commercial MBS Software: A Force‐Level Approach.” <i>Proceedings in Applied Mathematics and Mechanics</i> 26, no. 4 (2026). <a href=\"https://doi.org/10.1002/pamm.70215\">https://doi.org/10.1002/pamm.70215</a>.","short":"M.C.
