AU - Schneider, Tamara AU - Weber, Julia AU - Bauer, Nicola H. Transparency tools become crucial to inform people, though it is unclear how well they work. To investigate this matter, we conducted a user study focusing on Facebook, which has recently released the 'Off-Facebook Activity' transparency dashboard that informs about personal data collection from third parties. We exposed a group of n = 100 participants to the dashboard and surveyed their level of awareness and reactions to understand how transparency impacts users' privacy attitudes and intended behavior. Our participants were surprised about the massive amount of collected data, became significantly less comfortable with data collection, and more likely to take protective measures. Collaterally, we observed that current consent schemes are inadequate. Based on the survey findings, we make recommendations for more usable transparency and highlight the need to raise awareness about transparency tools and to provide easily actionable privacy controls. Popping out of the intermetallics was proven using atomic force microscopy. The phase expands out of the plane due to the exothermic formation of the Al5Fe2 phase and the feasibility of surface diffusion. Milling by a focused ion beam enabled the comparison of the chemical composition of the surface layer with the bulk interface, showing no difference. The growth direction is both towards aluminum and steel — the main diffusion flux is from aluminum towards steel, and the new intermetallic phase emerges at the steel side. The shortage of Al atoms causes a shift of the intermetallic as a whole towards aluminum. This includes modeling the damage and failure behavior of the materials in accordance with varying occurring stress states. This paper presents a calibration method of three different fracture models. The calibration of the models is done by use of experimental data from a modified punch test, tensile test and bulge test in order to map the occurring stress states from clinching processes and to precisely model the resulting failure behavior. Experimental investigations were carried out for an aluminum alloy EN AW-6014 in temper T4 and compared with the simulative results generated in LS-DYNA. The comparison of force-displacement curves and failure initiation shows that the Hosford–Coulomb model predicts the failure behavior for the material used and the tests applied with the best accuracy. Based on objective data, benchmarks can be determined to tailor training intensity and volume. Next to average and accumulated values, the most intense periods (MIPs) during competitive FH matches are of special interest, since these quantify the peak intensities players experience throughout the intermittent matches. The aim of this study was to retrospectively compare peak intensities between training and competition sessions in a male FH team competing in the first german division. Methods Throughout an 8-week in-season period, 372 individual activity datasets (144 datasets from competitive sessions) were recorded using the Polar Team Pro sensor (Kempele, Finland). MIPs were calculated applying a rolling window approach with predefined window length (1–5 min) and calculated for Total distance, High-Intensity-Running distance (> 16 km/h), Sprinting distance (> 20 km/h) and Acceleration load. Significant differences between training and competition MIPs were analysed through non-parametric statistical tests (P < 0.05). Results Analyses revealed higher MIPs during competition for all considered outcomes (P < 0.001). Effect size estimation revealed strongest effects for sprinting distance (d = 1.89 to d = 1.22) and lowest effect sizes for acceleration load (d = 0.92 to d = 0.49). Conclusion The present findings demonstrate that peak intensities during training do not reach those experienced during competitive sessions in a male FH team. Training routines such as manipulations of court-dimensions and team sizes might contribute to this discrepancy. Coaches should compare training and competition intensities to recalibrate training routines to optimize athletes’ preparation for competition. The behavior of CBS is simulated with a micropolar model, whereby the additional degree of freedom of the model describes the rotation of the sand grains. The model is used to generate a shear band under pressure for three different meshes, where the force‐displacement curves of the three meshes converge so that no mesh dependence occurs. Another requirement of the model is the consideration of asymmetric behavior for compression and tension. Due to the additional degree of freedom the implicit implementation of the micropolar continuum is very time‐consuming. Therefore, an explicit implementation is considered as an alternative possibility. This paper compares the advantages and disadvantages of both methods and the results for both calculations. Starting from the ideas of Abreu and Brunnermeier (Citation2003), a two-dimensional system of differential equations is developed. The first dynamic variable is the asset price growth rate. The second dynamic variable is the number of investors who believe that asset prices are abnormally high. In a phase plane analysis, I find both stable and unstable equilibria, depending on the spread of information and the response to other agents’ beliefs. If individuals try to increase their returns while perceiving more overpricing, these equilibria can be spirals or even approach limit cycles. Although I intend to study general price patterns, abnormally high asset prices can be caused by financial bubbles. In this model, bubbles can emerge and deflate both in cycles or directly, or they can grow until they burst. Further, I analyze market behavior after a central bank increases the interest rate. This can lead to new stable equilibria, but the emergence and bursting of bubbles cannot be prevented. We show that this enhancement originates from a new type of multi-mode Fano mechanism. These ‘Super-Fano’ resonances are investigated numerically in great detail using full-wave simulations. The theoretically predicted behavior of the metasurface is experimentally verified by linear and nonlinear transmission spectroscopy. Moreover, quantitative nonlinear measurements are performed, in which an absolute conversion efficiency as high as ηmax ≈ 2.8 × 10−7 a peak power intensity of 1.2 GW cm−2 is found. Compared to an unpatterned silicon film of the same thickness amplification factors of up to ~900 are demonstrated. In machine learning approaches based on linear models, it is well known that there exists a connecting path between the sparsest solution in terms of the $\ell^1$ norm,i.e., zero weights and the non-regularized solution, which is called the regularization path. Very recently, there was a first attempt to extend the concept of regularization paths to DNNs by means of treating the empirical loss and sparsity ($\ell^1$ norm) as two conflicting criteria and solving the resulting multiobjective optimization problem. However, due to the non-smoothness of the $\ell^1$ norm and the high number of parameters, this approach is not very efficient from a computational perspective. To overcome this limitation, we present an algorithm that allows for the approximation of the entire Pareto front for the above-mentioned objectives in a very efficient manner. We present numerical examples using both deterministic and stochastic gradients. We furthermore demonstrate that knowledge of the regularization path allows for a well-generalizing network parametrization. But the concept originally only starts from the users’ point of view, while the processes on the platforms’ side are largely left out. In contrast, this paper argues that what is true for users is also valid for algorithmic processes and the designers behind. On the one hand, the algorithm imagines users’ future behavior via machine learning, which is supposed to predict all their future actions. On the other hand, the designers anticipate different actions that could potentially performed by users with every new implementation of features such as social media feeds. In order to bring into view this permanently reciprocal interplay coupled to the imaginary, in which not only the users are involved, I will argue for a more comprehensive and theoretically precise algorithmic imaginary referring to the theory of Cornelius Castoriadis. In such a perspective, an important contribution can be formulated for a theory of social media platforms that goes beyond praxeocentrism or structural determinism. They comprise two conventional structured packings with different specific geometrical surface areas. In this work, the complex fluid dynamics in sandwich packings is modeled using a novel approach based on a one-dimensional, steady momentum balance of the liquid and gas phases. The interactions between the three present phases (gas, liquid, and solid) are considered by closures incorporated into the momentum balance. The formulation of these closures is derived from two fluid-dynamic analogies for the film and froth flow patterns. The adjustable parameters in the closures are regressed for the film flow using dry pressure drop measurements and liquid hold-up data in trickle flow conditions. For the froth flow, the tuning parameters are fitted to overall pressure drop measurements and local liquid hold-up data acquired from ultra-fast X-ray tomography (UFXCT). The model predicts liquid hold-up and pressure drop data with an average relative deviation of 16.4 % and 19 %, respectively. Compared to previous fluid dynamic models for sandwich packings, the number of adjustable parameters could be reduced while maintaining comparable accuracy. Coupling the chemistries of flame, solvent, and gas-phase species initially formed from the particle precursor in combination with the complex flow geometry of the spray flame means a special challenge for the modeling of the reaction processes. A new burner has been developed that is capable to observe the reaction of precursor solutions frequently used in spray-flame synthesis. The burner provides an almost flat, laminar, and steady flame with homogeneous addition of a fine aerosol and thus enables detailed investigation and modeling of the coupled reactions inde-pendent of spray formation and turbulent mixing. With its two separate supply channel matrices, the burner also enables the use of reactants that would otherwise react with each other already before reaching the flame. These features enable the investigation of a wide range of flame-based synthesis methods for nanoparticles and, due to the flat-flame geometry, kinetics models for these processes can be developed and validated. This work describes the matrix burner development and its gas flow optimization by simulation. Droplet-size dis-tributions generated by ultrasonic nebulization and their interaction with the burner structure are investigated by phase-Doppler anemometry. As an example for nanoparticle-for ming flames from solutions, iron-oxide nanoparticle-generating flames using iron(III) nitrate nonahydrate dissolved in 1-butanol were investigated. This effort includes measurements of two-dimensional maps of the flame temperature by a thermocouple and height-dependent concentration profiles of the main species by time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Exper-imental data are compared with 1D simulations using a reduced reaction mechanism. The results show that the new burner is well suited for the development of reaction models for precursors supplied in the liquid phase usually applied in spray-flame synthesis configurations.& COPY; 2022 The Combustion Institute. Even though process mining is increasingly relevant in academia and organizations, achieving process mining excellence and generating business value through its application is elusive. Maturity models can help to manage interdisciplinary teams in their efforts to plan, implement, and manage process mining in organizations. However, while numerous maturity models on business process management (BPM) are available, recent calls for process mining maturity models indicate a gap in the current knowledge base. We systematically design and develop a comprehensive process mining maturity model that consists of five factors comprising 23 elements, which organizations need to develop to apply process mining sustainably and successfully. We contribute to the knowledge base by the exaptation of existing BPM maturity models, and validate our model through its application to a real-world scenario. For the traveling salesperson problem (TSP) a plethora of features have been suggested. Most of these features are, if at all, only normalized imprecisely raising the issue of feature values being strongly affected by the instance size. Such artifacts may have detrimental effects on algorithm selection models. We propose a normalization for two feature groups which stood out in multiple AS studies on the TSP: (a) features based on a minimum spanning tree (MST) and (b) nearest neighbor relationships of the input instance. To this end we theoretically derive minimum and maximum values for properties of MSTs and k-nearest neighbor graphs (NNG) of Euclidean graphs. We analyze the differences in feature space between normalized versions of these features and their unnormalized counterparts. Our empirical investigations on various TSP benchmark sets point out that the feature scaling succeeds in eliminating the effect of the instance size. A proof-of-concept AS-study shows promising results: models trained with normalized features tend to outperform those trained with the respective vanilla features.
