AB - The paper presents a cross-European survey on teachers and crowdsourcing. The survey examines how familiar language teachers are with the concept of crowdsourcing and addresses their attitude towards including crowdsourcing into language teaching activities. The survey was administrated via an online questionnaire and collected volunteers’ data on: (a) teachers’ experience with organizing crowdsourcing activities for students/pupils, (b) the development of crowdsourced resources and materials as well as (c) teachers’ motivation for participating in or employing crowdsourcing activities. The questionnaire was disseminated in over 30 European countries. The final sample comprises 1129 language teachers aged 20 to 65, mostly working at institutions of tertiary education. The data indicates that many participants are not familiar with the concept of crowdsourcing resulting in a low rate of crowdsourcing activities in the classroom. However, a high percentage of responding teachers is potentially willing to crowdsource teaching materials for the language(s) they teach. They are particularly willing to collaborate with other teachers in the creation of interactive digital learning materials, and to select, edit, and share language examples for exercises or tests. Since the inclusion of crowdsourcing activities in language teaching is still in its initial stage, steps for further research are highlighted.

AB - Openness in science and education is increasing in importance within the digital knowledge society. So far, less attention has been paid to teaching Open Science in bachelor’s degrees or in qualitative methods. Therefore, the aim of this article is to use a seminar example to explore what Open Science practices can be taught in qualitative research and how digital tools can be involved. The seminar focused on the following practices: Open data practices, the practice of using the free and open source tool “Collaborative online Interpretation, the practice of participating, cooperating, collaborating and contributing through participatory technologies and in social (based) networks. To learn Open Science practices, the students were involved in a qualitative research project about “Use of digital technologies for the study and habitus of students”. The study shows the practices of Open Data are easy to teach, whereas the use of free and open source tools and participatory technologies for collaboration, participation, cooperation and contribution is more difficult. In addition, a cultural shift would have to take place within German universities to promote Open Science practices in general.

AB - In multi-label classification (MLC), each instance is associated with a set of class labels, in contrast to standard classification where an instance is assigned a single label. Binary relevance (BR) learning, which reduces a multi-label to a set of binary classification problems, one per label, is arguably the most straight-forward approach to MLC. In spite of its simplicity, BR proved to be competitive to more sophisticated MLC methods, and still achieves state-of-the-art performance for many loss functions. Somewhat surprisingly, the optimal choice of the base learner for tackling the binary classification problems has received very little attention so far. Taking advantage of the label independence assumption inherent to BR, we propose a label-wise base learner selection method optimizing label-wise macro averaged performance measures. In an extensive experimental evaluation, we find that or approach, called LiBRe, can significantly improve generalization performance.

AB - Let $M$ be a compact, real analytic manifold and $G$ be the Lie group of all
real-analytic diffeomorphisms of $M$, which is modelled on the (DFS)-space
${\mathfrak g}$ of real-analytic vector fields on $M$. We study flows of
time-dependent real-analytic vector fields on $M$ which are integrable
functions in time, and their dependence on the time-dependent vector field.
Notably, we show that the Lie group $G$ is $L^1$-regular in the sense that each
$[\gamma]$ in $L^1([0,1],{\mathfrak g})$ has an evolution which is an
absolutely continuous $G$-valued function on $[0,1]$ and smooth in $[\gamma]$.
As tools for the proof, we develop several new results concerning
$L^p$-regularity of infinite-dimensional Lie groups, for $1\leq p\leq \infty$,
which will be useful also for the discussion of other classes of groups.
Moreover, we obtain new results concerning the continuity and complex
analyticity of non-linear mappings on open subsets of locally convex direct
limits.

AB - Modern data-driven frameworks often have to process large amounts of data periodically. Hence, they often operate under time or space constraints. This also holds for Linked Data-driven frameworks when processing RDF data, in particular, when they perform link discovery tasks. In this work, we present a novel approach for link discovery under constraints pertaining to the expected recall of a link discovery task. Given a link specification, the approach aims to find a subsumed link specification that achieves a lower run time than the input specification while abiding by a predefined constraint on the expected recall it has to achieve. Our approach, dubbed LIGER, combines downward refinement oper- ators with monotonicity assumptions to detect such specifications. We evaluate our approach on seven datasets. Our results suggest that the different implemen- tations of LIGER can detect subsumed specifications that abide by expected recall constraints efficiently, thus leading to significantly shorter overall run times than our baseline.

AB - We numerically simulate multiple light scattering in discrete disordered media represented by large clusters of irregular non-absorbing particles. The packing density of clusters is 0.5. With such conditions diffuse scattering is significantly reduced and light transport follows propagation channels that are determined by the particle size and topology of the medium. This kind of localization produces coherent backscattering intensity surge and enhanced negative polarization branch if compared to lower density samples.

AB - A stepwise angular spectrum method (SASM) for curved interfaces is presented to calculate the wave propagation in planar lens-like integrated optical structures based on photonic slab waveguides. The method is derived and illustrated for an effective 2D setup first and then for 3D slab waveguide lenses. We employ slab waveguides of different thicknesses connected by curved surfaces to realize a lens-like structure. To simulate the wave propagation in 3D including reflection and scattering losses, the stepwise angular spectrum method is combined with full vectorial finite element computations for subproblems with lower complexity. Our SASM results show excellent agreement with rigorous numerical simulations of the full structures with a substantially lower computational effort and can be utilized for the simulation-based design and optimization of complex and large scale setups.

AB - Link discovery plays a key role in the integration and use of data across RDF knowledge graphs. Active learning approaches are a common family of solutions to address the problem of learning how to compute links from users. So far, only active learning from perfect oracles has been considered in the literature. However, real oracles are often far from perfect (e.g., in crowdsourcing). We hence study the problem of learning how to compute links across knowledge graphs from noisy oracles, i.e., oracles that are not guaranteed to return correct classification results. We present a novel approach for link discovery based on a probabilistic model, with which we estimate the joint odds of the oracles’ guesses. We combine this approach with an iterative learning approach based on refinements. The resulting method, Ligon, is evaluated on 10 benchmark datasets. Our results suggest that Ligon configured with 10 iterations and 10 training examples per iteration achieves more than 95% of the F-measure achieved by state-of-the-art algorithms trained with a perfect oracle. Moreover, Ligon outperforms batch learning approaches devised to be trained with small amounts of training data by more than 40% F-measure on average.

AB - Joining technology is regarded as a key technology for reducing energy consumption and CO2 imitation as well as the use of innovative materials and development of new, resource-saving products. Punch riveting is a widely used and established joining process in many sectors. The white and brown goods, electrical engineering, construction and, in particular, the automotive industry are some of the sectors mentioned here.
Since the design and assessment of punch rivet components with regard to structural durability can only be carried out experimentally using prototypes due to a lack of experience and calculation concepts, the improvement of this uneconomical and time-consuming procedure is the goal of this contribution.
Therefore, a numerical simulation and design method for cyclically loads punched riveted joints shall be introduced. This concept shall be based on the notch strain concept.
The following steps are necessary to achieve the goal shown above:
Tensile tests on all materials involved in the joint for determination of tensile strength and quasi-static stress-strain curves
Estimation of the cyclic material properties from the tensile strength in order to obtain the strain-life curve and the cyclic stress-strain curve
Estimation of mean stress sensitivity from the tensile strength to conduct an amplitude transformation for variable amplitude loadings.
Execution of a 2D forming simulation of the joining process to determine the geometry and the stresses and degrees of deformation present in the connection
Transferring the results of the forming simulation into a static-mechanical load simulation for determining the relation between the external load and the elastic-plastic strain at the critical point
Estimation of the service life by means of the damage parameter Wöhler curves calculated from the strain-life curve
In order to verify the simulation and calculation method, service life investigations have been carried out on punched riveted components under constant and variable amplitude load.
The test results, as well as the workflow through the fatigue assessment and its accuracy in estimation the fatigue life will be shown in this contribution.

AB - LLC resonant converters generally employ MOSFETs in the inverter stage, which can be of half-bridge
(HB) or full-bridge (FB) type. The generally weak intrinsic (body) diodes of the MOSFETs cause turn-on
losses when being forced to hard current commutations finally leading to the components self-destruction when operated constantly in this way. Consequently, zero-voltage switching (ZVS) operation is more or less essential in a silicon (Si) MOSFET-based HB or FB. To ensure ZVS, the LLC is operated in the inductive region, i.e. with lagging resonant current. On the contrary, IGBTs show dominant turn-off losses
and therefore are conventionally not applied in LLCs typically requiring high switching frequencies to achieve low output voltages. Yet, if the LLC is intentionally designed for the capacitive region, i. e.
operation with leading current, zero-current switching (ZCS) enabling IGBTs in the inverter stage can be ensured. This paper explores in detail the LLC in the capacitive operating region and gives design considerations for a capacitive LLC utilizing both robust and cost-efficient IGBTs for an exemplary 2.2 kW
automotive on-board DC-DC converter application. The results of a loss analysis show that the LLC resonant converter can be operated well in the capacitive region. In the given case, significantly lower
overall and 30 % lower inverter stage losses are achieved in the thermally relevant worst-case comparison with an inductive LLC based on Si MOSFETs.

AB - In this work, we initiate the research about the Gathering problem for robots
with limited viewing range in the three-dimensional Euclidean space. In the
Gathering problem, a set of initially scattered robots is required to gather at
the same position. The robots' capabilities are very restricted -- they do not
agree on any coordinate system or compass, have a limited viewing range, have
no memory of the past and cannot communicate. We study the problem in two
different time models, in FSYNC (fully synchronized discrete rounds) and the
continuous time model. For FSYNC, we introduce the 3D-Go-To-The-Center-strategy
and prove a runtime of $\Theta(n^2)$ that matches the currently best runtime
bound for the same model in the Euclidean plane [SPAA'11]. Our main result is
the generalization of contracting strategies (continuous time) from
[Algosensors'17] to three dimensions. In contracting strategies, every robot
that is located on the global convex hull of all robots' positions moves with
full speed towards the inside of the convex hull. We prove a runtime bound of
$O(\Delta \cdot n^{3/2})$ for any three-dimensional contracting strategy, where
$\Delta$ denotes the diameter of the initial configuration. This comes up to a
factor of $\sqrt{n}$ close to the lower bound of $\Omega (\Delta \cdot n)$
which is already true in two dimensions. In general, it might be hard for
robots with limited viewing range to decide whether they are located on the
global convex hull and which movement maintains the connectivity of the swarm,
rendering the design of concrete contracting strategies a challenging task. We
prove that the continuous variant of 3D-Go-To-The-Center is contracting and
keeps the swarm connected. Moreover, we give a simple design criterion for
three-dimensional contracting strategies that maintains the connectivity of the
swarm and introduce an exemplary strategy based on this criterion.

AB - Many countries have opened their health care markets to private for-profit providers, aiming to promote quality and choice for patients. The prices are regulated and providers compete in location and quality. We show that whereas opening a public hospital market typically raises quality, the private provider strategically locates towards the corner of the market to avoid costly quality competition. Social welfare depends on the size of the regulator's budget and on the altruism of the public provider. If the budget is large, high quality results and welfare is highest in a duopoly whenever entry is optimal. If the budget is small, quality levels in a duopoly mirror the quality level in a monopoly. It can be optimal for the regulator not to use the full budget.

AB - This paper presents the results of static short-term and long-term tensile tests for beta-nucleated joined polypropylene samples by the hot plate welding process. In the present study different dimensionless joining displacements are accounted for. The results show that high short-term tensile strength does not directly transfer to high long-term tensile strength. The morphology of the weld seam in the joined samples is examined by means of transmitted and reflected light microscopy. For the dimensionless joining displacements of 0.75 and 0.95, stretched spherulites are obtained. X-Ray diffraction can be used as a tool for qualitative and quantitative analysis and eventually for differentiation of samples of various joining displacements.

AB - Network function virtualization (NFV) proposes
to replace physical middleboxes with more flexible virtual
network functions (VNFs). To dynamically adjust to everchanging
traffic demands, VNFs have to be instantiated and
their allocated resources have to be adjusted on demand.
Deciding the amount of allocated resources is non-trivial.
Existing optimization approaches often assume fixed resource
requirements for each VNF instance. However, this can easily
lead to either waste of resources or bad service quality if too
many or too few resources are allocated.
To solve this problem, we train machine learning models
on real VNF data, containing measurements of performance
and resource requirements. For each VNF, the trained models
can then accurately predict the required resources to handle
a certain traffic load. We integrate these machine learning
models into an algorithm for joint VNF scaling and placement
and evaluate their impact on resulting VNF placements. Our
evaluation based on real-world data shows that using suitable
machine learning models effectively avoids over- and underallocation
of resources, leading to up to 12 times lower resource
consumption and better service quality with up to 4.5 times
lower total delay than using standard fixed resource allocation.
