AB - On the circuit level, the design paradigm Approximate Computing seeks to trade off computational accuracy against a target metric, e.g., energy consumption. This trade-off is possible for many applications due to their inherent resiliency against inaccuracies.
In the past, several automated approximation frameworks have been presented, which either utilize designated approximation techniques or libraries to replace approximable circuit parts with inaccurate versions. The frameworks invoke a search algorithm to iteratively explore the search space of performance degraded circuits, and validate their quality individually.
In this paper, we propose to reverse this procedure. Rather than exploring the search space, we delineate the approximate parts of the search space which are guaranteed to lead to valid approximate circuits. Our methodology is supported by formal verification and independent of approximation techniques. Eventually, the user is provided with quality bounds of the individual approximable circuit parts. Consequently, our approach guarantees that any approximate circuit which implements these parts within the determined quality constraints satisfies the global quality constraints, superseding a subsequent quality verification.
In our experimental results, we present the runtimes of our approach.

AB - The nonlinear processes of frequency conversion such as second harmonic generation (SHG) usually obey certain selection rules, resulting from the preservation of different kinds of physical quantities, e.g. the angular momentum. For the SHG created by a monolayer of transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) such as WS2, the valley-exciton locked selection rule predicts an SHG signal in the cross-polarization state. By combining plasmonic nanostructures with a monolayer of TMDC, a hybrid metasurface is realized, which affects this nonlinear process because of an additional polarization conversion process. Here, we observe that the plasmonic metasurface modifies the light-matter interaction with the TMDC, resulting in an SHG signal that is co-polarized with respect to the incident field, which is usually forbidden for the monolayers of TMDC. We fabricate such hybrid metasurfaces by placing plasmonic nanorods on top of a monolayer WS2 and study the valley-exciton locked SHG emission from such system for different parameters, such as wavelength and polarization. Furthermore, we show the potential of the hybrid metasurface for tailoring nonlinear processes by adding additional phase information to the SHG signal using the Pancharatnam-Berry phase effect. This allows direct tailoring of the SHG emission to the far-field.

AB - Faults in the realization and usage of cyber-physical systems can cause significant security issues. Attackers might exploit vulnerabilities in the physical configurations, control systems, or accessibility through internet connections. For CPS, two challenges are combined: Firstly, discipline-specific security measures should be applied. Secondly, new measures have to be created to cover interdisciplinary impacts. For instance, faulty software configurations in cyber-physical production systems (CPPS) might allow attackers to manipulate the correct control of production processes impacting the quality of end products. From liability and publicity perspective, a worst-case scenario is that such a corrupted product is delivered to a customer. In this context, security-oriented fault-tolerance in Systems Engineering (SE) requires measures to evaluate interdisciplinary system designs with regard to potential scenarios of attacks. The paper at hand contributes a conceptual threat modelling approach to cover potential attack scenarios. The approach can be used to derive both system-level and discipline-specific security solutions. As an application case, issues are focused on which attackers intend to exploit vulnerabilities in a CPPS. The goal is to support systems engineers in verification and validation tasks regarding security-oriented fault-tolerance.

AB - Abstract
The surface-assisted hierarchical self-assembly of DNA origami lattices represents a versatile and straightforward method for the organization of functional nanoscale objects such as proteins and nanoparticles. Here, we demonstrate that controlling the binding and exchange of different monovalent and divalent cation species at the DNA-mica interface enables the self-assembly of highly ordered DNA origami lattices on mica surfaces. The development of lattice quality and order is quantified by a detailed topological analysis of high-speed atomic force microscopy (HS-AFM) images. We find that lattice formation and quality strongly depend on the monovalent cation species. Na+ is more effective than Li+ and K+ in facilitating the assembly of high-quality DNA origami lattices, because it is replacing the divalent cations at their binding sites in the DNA backbone more efficiently. With regard to divalent cations, Ca2+ can be displaced more easily from the backbone phosphates than Mg2+ and is thus superior in guiding lattice assembly. By independently adjusting incubation time, DNA origami concentration, and cation species, we thus obtain a highly ordered DNA origami lattice with an unprecedented normalized correlation length of 8.2. Beyond the correlation length, we use computer vision algorithms to compute the time course of different topological observables that, overall, demonstrate that replacing MgCl2 by CaCl2 enables the synthesis of DNA origami lattices with drastically increased lattice order.

AB - Modern services comprise interconnected components,
e.g., microservices in a service mesh, that can scale and
run on multiple nodes across the network on demand. To process
incoming traffic, service components have to be instantiated and
traffic assigned to these instances, taking capacities and changing
demands into account. This challenge is usually solved with
custom approaches designed by experts. While this typically
works well for the considered scenario, the models often rely
on unrealistic assumptions or on knowledge that is not available
in practice (e.g., a priori knowledge).
We propose a novel deep reinforcement learning approach that
learns how to best coordinate services and is geared towards
realistic assumptions. It interacts with the network and relies on
available, possibly delayed monitoring information. Rather than
defining a complex model or an algorithm how to achieve an
objective, our model-free approach adapts to various objectives
and traffic patterns. An agent is trained offline without expert
knowledge and then applied online with minimal overhead. Compared
to a state-of-the-art heuristic, it significantly improves flow
throughput and overall network utility on real-world network
topologies and traffic traces. It also learns to optimize different
objectives, generalizes to scenarios with unseen, stochastic traffic
patterns, and scales to large real-world networks.

AB - In this paper we propose a novel low-power receiver architecture which uses a direct-detection receiver in combination with a 2.44 GHz 13 bit Barker Code SAW correlator for improvement of co-channel interference. Furthermore, to improve receiver sensitivity, a narrowband baseband correlator which uses pulse position modulation (PPM) is proposed. The receiver can be used as a Wake-up Receiver (WuRx) in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) to minimize the power dissipation and provide asynchronous and on-demand data communication. We present a rigorous analysis of the receiver. It shows that the RF front-end (SAW correlator and envelope detector) alone suffers from poor sensitivity due to the high baseband bandwidth and the absence of an RF low noise amplifier. However, by adding the narrowband correlator with an innovative Pulse Position Modulation (PPM) scheme, the overall sensitivity of the receiver reaches -63.1 dB with an improvement of 17.7 dB due to the use of the narrowband correlator that reduces the baseband bandwidth from 50 to 0.84 MHz. By scaling the narrowband correlator bandwidth further down, the receiver sensitivity can be further improved.

AB - High-fidelity periodic poling over long lengths is required for robust, quasi-phase-matched second-harmonic generation using the fundamental, quasi-TE polarized waveguide modes in a thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) waveguide. Here, a shallow-etched ridge waveguide is fabricated in x-cut magnesium oxide doped TFLN and is poled accurately over 5 mm. The high fidelity of the poling is demonstrated over long lengths using a non-destructive technique of confocal scanning second-harmonic microscopy. We report a second-harmonic conversion efficiency of up to 939 %/W (length-normalized conversion efficiency 3757 %/Wcm²), measured at telecommunications wavelengths. The device demonstrates a narrow spectral linewidth (1 nm) and can be tuned precisely with a tuning characteristic of 0.1 nm/°C, over at least 40 °C without measurable loss of efficiency.

AB - Employing a unique sample of 2,849 tariff imposition announcements by and against the United States (U.S.) over the period from 2018 to 2019, this study analyzes the impact of recent tariff announcements on share prices from 859 U.S. companies. We provide evidence for negative (cumulative) average abnormal stock returns due to tariff announcements during a symmetric three-day event window. We suggest that stock market investors expect adverse impacts of tariff impositions, e.g. a decrease in the companies' future cash flows and a threat of retaliation. The negative wealth effects are observed irrespective of whether the Trump administration announces safeguard tariffs to protect domestic firms or a retaliation is declared by foreign countries. Moreover, building several subsamples, we find that the adverse impact is mostly driven by announcements involving China and is associated with a variety of sector, tariff, trade and firm characteristics.

AB - AbstractTo examine the hypothesis that normalization of low circulating leptin levels in patients with anorexia nervosa ameliorates hyperactivity, three seriously ill females with hyperactivity were treated off-label with metreleptin (recombinant human leptin) for up to 14 days. Drive for activity, repetitive thoughts of food, inner restlessness, and weight phobia decreased in two patients. Surprisingly, depression improved rapidly in all patients. No serious adverse events occurred. Due to obvious limitations of uncontrolled case series, placebo-controlled clinical trials are mandatory to confirm the observed rapid onset of beneficial effects. Our findings suggest an important role of hypoleptinemia in the mental and behavioral phenotype of anorexia nervosa.

AB - In modern lightweight designs, it is important to find a compromise between the strength and the weight of the construction detail. Hence, hybrid structures made of aluminum and steel materials are increasingly being used in automotive applications. Due to limitations in the quality of resistance spot welding, self-piercing riveting can be used as an alternative process to join sheets from different material groups. The aim of this project is to develop a computational method to assess the self-piercing riveted components subjected to the cyclic loads. To achieve this goal, two approaches are followed: Evaluation unsing internal forces: A substitute model is developed to describe the stiffness of self-piercing riveted joints subjected to different loading conditions. The parameters of the substitute model are identified and the internal force components acting on the joint are evaluated. The model provides the basis for the subsequent fatigue life estimation of self-piercing riveted components. For joints subjected to low bending moments, the fatigue life of components can be estimated accurately. Due to lack of specimen geometries producing pure bending and the combination of tension-bending forces, it is not possible to estimate the fatigue life of complex components subjected to high bending moments. Based on the results of [Mesc 16], the methodology is further developed to determine the stresses acting on the joint and to characterize the joining point with the use of simulations. The local concept proposed in the FKM guideline nonlinear provides the basis for the analytical assessment of self-piercing riveted components. In this regard, the cyclic behavior of the material and the local stresses are required as input data. The cyclic behavior of the aluminum EN AW-6181A-T6 and steel HX340LAD sheets were already determined in the previous project. Subsequently, in this project the properties of the rivet made of 38B2 steel are identified. The finite element analysis using elastic-plastic material behavior is used to determine the stresses in the joint subjected to the cyclic loads. To verify the model, the results of simulations and experiments are compared concerning the crack initiation zone as well as the determined number of cycles. To determine the stresses that can be used for the analytical assessment, the damage relevant load components need to be identified. In this regard, it is recommended to use the normal stress perpendicular to the crack propagation direction, the stress of crack opening mode I. Using the damage parameter PRAM and considering the support factors according to the FKM guideline nonlinear, a reliable estimation of the crack initiation zone within the joint is possible. Regarding the joint made of aluminum sheet EN AW-6181A, the methodology is able to provide promising results. However, regarding the joints made of aluminum EN AW-6181A and steel HX340LAD sheets, there is still potential to improve the results. The reasons for this are described in chapter 7.2.5 and 7.2.6. An analytical fatigue assessment is relatively easy to achieve with procedure 1. However, contrary to the objective formulated above, expensive fatigue tests are necessary to determine the failure conditions (strength values). This disadvantage can be circumvented by determining the strength information of individual joining points under different load types using procedure 2. The latter, in return, is not suitable for the assessment of complex components with several joining points. Due to the increasing calculation times of the simulation, the application in this case is not economically reasonable. By the described combination of method 1 and 2, the disadvantages of the two individual concepts can be compensated. An analytical fatigue assessment of self-piercing riveted components can be carried out based on the cyclic material behavior. The objective of the project was achieved.

AB - We present a time-over-threshold readout technique to count the number of activated pixels from an array of superconducting nanowire single photon detectors (SNSPDs). This technique places no additional heatload on the cryostat, and retains the intrinsic count rate of the time-tagger. We demonstrate proof-of-principle operation with respect to a four-pixel device. Furthermore, we show that, given some permissible error threshold, the number of pixels that can be reliably read out scales linearly with the intrinsic signal-to-noise ratio of the individual pixel response.

AB - For suitable finite-dimensional smooth manifolds M (possibly with various
kinds of boundary or corners), locally convex topological vector spaces F and
non-negative integers k, we construct continuous linear operators S_n from the
space of F-valued k times continuously differentiable functions on M to the
corresponding space of smooth functions such that S_n(f) converges to f in
C^k(M,F) as n tends to infinity, uniformly for f in compact subsets of
C^k(M,F). We also study the existence of continuous linear right inverses for
restriction maps from C^k(M,F) to C^k(L,F) if L is a closed subset of M,
endowed with a C^k-manifold structure turning the inclusion map from L to M
into a C^k-map. Moreover, we construct continuous linear right inverses for
restriction operators between spaces of sections in vector bundles in many
situations, and smooth local right inverses for restriction operators between
manifolds of mappings. We also obtain smoothing results for sections in fibre
bundles.

AB - AbstractIn three experiments, we investigated the effect of unconscious social priming on human behavior in a choice reaction time task. Photographs of a basketball player passing a ball to the left/right were used as target stimuli. Participants had to respond to the pass direction either by a whole-body (complex) response or a button-press (simple) response. Visually masked stimuli, showing both a task-relevant cue (pass direction) and a task-irrelevant, social cue (gaze direction), were used as primes. Subliminal social priming was found for kinematic (center of pressure) and chronometric measures (response times): gaze direction in the primes affected responses to the pass direction in the targets. The social priming effect diminished when gaze information was unhelpful or even detrimental to the task. Social priming of a complex behavior does not require awareness or intentionality, indicating automatic processing. Nevertheless, it can be controlled by top-down, strategic processes.

AB - In recent times societal crises such as the coronavirus disease 2019 outbreak have given rise to a tension between formal ‘command and control’ and informal social media activated self-organising information and communication systems that are utilised for crisis management decision-making. Social media distrust affects the dissemination of disaster information as it entails shifts in media perception and participation but also changes in the way individuals and organisations make sense of information in critical situations. So far, a little considered notion in this domain is the concept of sense-giving. Originating from organisational theory, it is used to explain the mechanisms behind intentional information provision that fosters collective meaning creation. In our study, we seek to understand the potential impact of sense-giving from Twitter crisis communication generated during the Hurricane Harvey disaster event. Social network and content analyses performed with a dataset of 9,414,463 tweets yielded insights into how sense-giving occurs during a large-scale disaster event. Theoretically, we specified (1) perpetual sense-giving, which relies primarily on topical authority and frequency; as well as (2) intermittent sense-giving, which occurs from high value of message content and leverage of popularity, that is, retweets. Our findings emphasise the importance of information-rich actors in communication networks and the leverage of their influence in crises such as coronavirus disease 2019 to reduce social media distrust and facilitate sense-making.

AB - Even though the spectrum of parts is expected to shift over the long term as a result of increasing e-mobility, there is still an extremely high demand for complex components made of high-strength materials which can only be produced by hydroforming technologies. The innovative combination of hydroforming processes with other forming processes, as well as the improvement of the processes themselves, offers considerable potential for improvement.
A number of promising ways of improving the hydroforming process chain are therefore the subject of this contribution. The focus of the article is on possible approaches for combining (incremental) pre- and post-forming operations, which can permit considerable improvements in both quality and features at a reduced cost. Furthermore, a novel combination of quasi-static and high-speed forming processes is presented, leading to an improved overall forming process (with a high application potential) for the production of complex parts.

AB - Abstract
The phenomenon of entanglement is the basis of quantum information and quantum communication processes. Entangled systems with a large number of photons are of great interest at present because they provide a platform for streaming technologies based on photonics. In this paper we present a device which operates with four-photons and based on the Hong–Ou–Mandel interference. The presented device allows to maximize the degree of spatial entanglement and generate the highly entangled four-dimensional Bell states. Furthermore, the use of the interferometer in different regimes leads to fast interference fringes in the coincidence probability with period of oscillations twice smaller than the pump wavelength. We have a good agreement between theoretical simulations and experimental results.

AB - The kinetic Brownian motion on the sphere bundle of a Riemannian manifold $M$
is a stochastic process that models a random perturbation of the geodesic flow.
If $M$ is a orientable compact constantly curved surface, we show that in the
limit of infinitely large perturbation the $L^2$-spectrum of the infinitesimal
generator of a time rescaled version of the process converges to the Laplace
spectrum of the base manifold.

AB - Speech activity detection (SAD), which often rests on the fact that the noise is "more'' stationary than speech, is particularly challenging in non-stationary environments, because the time variance of the acoustic scene makes it difficult to discriminate speech from noise. We propose two approaches to SAD, where one is based on statistical signal processing, while the other utilizes neural networks. The former employs sophisticated signal processing to track the noise and speech energies and is meant to support the case for a resource efficient, unsupervised signal processing approach.
The latter introduces a recurrent network layer that operates on short segments of the input speech to do temporal smoothing in the presence of non-stationary noise. The systems are tested on the Fearless Steps challenge database, which consists of the transmission data from the Apollo-11 space mission.
The statistical SAD achieves comparable detection performance to earlier proposed neural network based SADs, while the neural network based approach leads to a decision cost function of 1.07% on the evaluation set of the 2020 Fearless Steps Challenge, which sets a new state of the art.

AB - This experiment studied the strain parameters of rolling an aluminum matrix when wire netting is inserted between aluminum layers. During the experiment, two types of stainless steel fabric netting oriented parallel and diagonal to the rolling axis were placed between two aluminum strips and rolled. Multiple rolling processes were performed in which the temperature and pressure on the material were varied to produce bonding of matrix layers. During the study, the following main investigations were made: strain on areas of longitudinal and transverse cross sections of the composite was measured; stretching and ovalization of net wiring and changes in the net cell angles were determined; mechanical properties of composites along the rolling direction were tested. The main contradiction resulting from this experiment was as follows: the contact pressure required for the bonding of aluminum layers produces extreme tensile strain on the inserted net wires, reducing the mechanical properties of the reinforcing net and thus reducing properties of the entire composite. Optimal results in the longitudinal tension tests were achieved by using strips with diagonally oriented net-reinforcement.

AB - The three-dimensional (3D) crystal structures of the GAF3 domain of cyanobacteriochrome Slr1393 (Synechocystis PCC6803) carrying a phycocyanobilin chromophore could be solved in both 15-Z dark-adapted state, Pr, λmax = 649 nm, and 15-E photoproduct, Pg, λmax = 536 nm (resolution, 1.6 and 1.86 Å, respectively). The structural data allowed identifying the large spectral shift of the Pr-to-Pg conversion as resulting from an out-of-plane rotation of the chromophore’s peripheral rings and an outward movement of a short helix formed from a formerly unstructured loop. In addition, a third structure (2.1-Å resolution) starting from the photoproduct crystals allowed identification of elements that regulate the absorption maxima. In this peculiar form, generated during X-ray exposition, protein and chromophore conformation still resemble the photoproduct state, except for the D-ring already in 15-Z configuration and tilted out of plane akin the dark state. Due to its formation from the photoproduct, it might be considered an early conformational change initiating the parental state-recovering photocycle. The high quality and the distinct features of the three forms allowed for applying quantum-chemical calculations in the framework of multiscale modeling to rationalize the absorption maxima changes. A systematic analysis of the PCB chromophore in the presence and absence of the protein environment showed that the direct electrostatic effect is negligible on the spectral tuning. However, the protein forces the outer pyrrole rings of the chromophore to deviate from coplanarity, which is identified as the dominating factor for the color regulation.

AB - AbstractThe derivative concept plays a major role in economics. However, its use in economics is very heterogeneous, sometimes inconsistent, and contradicts students’ prior knowledge from school. This applies in particular to the common economic interpretation of the derivative as the amount of change while increasing the production by one unit. Hence, in calculus courses for economics students, learners should acquire an understanding of the derivative that is mathematically acceptable and connected to their prior knowledge, but which also takes into account its practical use in economics. In this paper we first develop a theoretical model describing such an understanding of the derivative for economics students. We then present an exploratory study investigating the extent to which economics students have such an understanding after their calculus course. The results indicate that many of them might not have acquired this kind of understanding, in particular concerning the common economic interpretation of the derivative. The study furthermore yields possible gaps in students’ understanding and possible misconceptions.

AB - AbstractTrend analyses based on dietary records suggest decreases in the intakes of total sugar (TS), added and free sugar since 2005 among children and adolescents in Germany. In terms of age trends, TS intake decreased with increasing age. However, self-reported sugar intake in epidemiological studies is criticised, as it may be prone to bias due to selective underreporting. Furthermore, adolescents are more susceptible to underreporting than children. We thus analysed time and age trends in urinary fructose excretion (FE), sucrose excretion (SE) and the sum of both (FE + SE) as biomarkers for sugar intake among 8·5–16·5-year-old adolescents. Urinary sugar excretion was measured by UPLC-MS/MS in 997 24-h urine samples collected from 239 boys and 253 girls participating in the Dortmund Nutritional and Anthropometric Longitudinally Designed (DONALD) study cohort between 1990 and 2016. Time and age trends of log-transformed FE, SE and FE + SE were analysed using polynomial mixed-effects regression models. Between 1990 and 2016, FE as well as FE + SE decreased (linear time trend: P = 0·0272 and P < 0·0001, respectively). A minor increase in excretion during adolescence was confined to FE (linear age trend: P = 0·0017). The present 24-h excretion measurements support a previously reported dietary record-based decline in sugar intake since 2005. However, the previously seen dietary record-based decrease in TS from childhood to late adolescence was not confirmed by our biomarker analysis, suggesting a constant sugar intake for the period of adolescence.

AB - The maintenance of efficient and robust overlay networks is one
of the most fundamental and reoccurring themes in networking.
This paper presents a survey of state-of-the-art
algorithms to design and repair overlay networks in a distributed
manner. In particular, we discuss basic algorithmic primitives
to preserve connectivity, review algorithms for the fundamental
problem of graph linearization, and then survey self-stabilizing
algorithms for metric and scalable topologies.
We also identify open problems and avenues for future research.

AB - Many dynamical systems possess symmetries, e.g. rotational and translational invariances of mechanical systems. These can be beneficially exploited in the design of numerical optimal control methods. We present a model predictive control scheme which is based on a library of precomputed motion primitives. The primitives are equivalence classes w.r.t. the symmetry of the optimal control problems. Trim primitives as relative equilibria w.r.t. this symmetry, play a crucial role in the algorithm. The approach is illustrated using an academic mobile robot example.

AB - Metal oxide inverse opals are interesting for various applications. To achieve highly ordered inverse opal structures, one important issue during the colloidal crystal templating procedure is to form a stable precursor network before the template loses its structural integrity at high temperature. Using poly(methyl methacrylate), PMMA, colloidal crystal templates, it is essential to consider the physical and chemical changes of the precursors induced by the changes of PMMA during the thermal conversion. For a systematic investigation of this matter, we synthesized a variety of metal oxide inverse opals from the respective metal nitrates, including Cr2O3, Ga2O3, Fe2O3, In2O3, CuO, CeO2, and ZnO, to compare the effect of various modifications of precursors on the structural and optical properties. When the nitrate precursors have a lower thermal stability than the PMMA template, we have modified the metal nitrates by chelating or by polyacrylamide gelation to form more stable precursor networks.

AB - Peer-to-Peer news portals allow Internet users to write news articles and make them available online to interested readers. Despite the fact that authors are free in their choice of topics, there are a number of quality characteristics that an article must meet before it is published. In addition to meaningful titles, comprehensibly written texts and meaning- ful images, relevant tags are an important criteria for the quality of such news. In this case study, we discuss the challenges and common mistakes that Peer-to-Peer reporters face when tagging news and how incorrect information can be corrected through the orchestration of existing Natu- ral Language Processing services. Lastly, we use this illustrative example to give insight into the challenges of dealing with bottom-up taxonomies.

AB - This study presents a model in which heterogenous, risk-averse agents can use either (legal) tax optimisation or (illegal) tax evasion to reduce their tax burden and thus increase their utility. In addition to introducing individual variables like risk aversion or income, we allow agents to observe the behaviour of their neighbours. Depending on the behaviour of their peer group’s members, the agents’ utilities may increase or decrease, respectively. Simulation results show that taxpayers favour illegal evasion over legal optimisation in most cases. We find that interactions between taxpayers and their social networks have a deep impact on aggregate behaviour. Parameter changes such as increasing audit rates affect the results, often being intensified by social interactions. The effect of such changes varies depending on whether or not a fraction of agents is considered inherently honest.

AB - This article comprehensively reviews Australia’s corporate income tax complexity as faced by multinational corporations (MNCs) and compares it to the average of the remaining OECD countries. Building on unique survey data, I find that the Australian tax code is considerably more complex than the OECD average, which is mainly due to overly complex anti-avoidance legislation, such as regulations on transfer pricing, general anti-avoidance or controlled foreign corporations (CFC). In contrast, Australia’s tax framework, which covers processes and features such as tax law enactment or tax audits, is close to the OECD average. A more detailed analysis yields further interesting insights. For example, excessive details in the tax code and the time between the announcement of a tax law change and its enactment turn out to be serious issues in Australia relative to the remaining OECD countries.

AB - Previous accounting research shows that taxes affect decision making by individuals and firms. Most studies assume that agents have an accurate perception regarding their tax burden. However, there is a growing body of literature analyzing whether taxes are indeed perceived correctly. We review 127 studies on the measurement of tax misperception and its behavioral implications. The review reveals that many taxpayers have substantial tax misperceptions that lead to biased decision making. We develop a Behavioral Taxpayer Response Model on the impact of provided tax information on tax perception. Besides individual traits, characteristics of the tax information and the decision environment determine the extent of tax misperception. We discuss opportunities for future research and methodological limitations. While there is much evidence on tax misperception at the individual level, we hardly find any research at the firm level. Little is known about the real effects of managers’ tax misperception and on how tax information is strategically managed to impact stakeholders. This research gap is surprising as a large part of the accounting literature analyzes decision making and disclosure of firms. We recommend a mixed-method approach combining experiments, surveys, and archival data analyses to improve the knowledge on tax misperception and its consequences.
