Abstract
Due to the lockdown of schools as one of the COVID-19 control measures, adolescents have had the opportunity to re-organise their daily lives; e.g. some of them have adapted their bedtimes to the new situation during the lockdown in favour of their own chronotype. Hence, we investigated differences in chronobiological characteristics (e.g., the midpoint of sleep, sleep duration or social jetlag (SJL); i.e., a discrepancy between biological and social timing) before and during the pandemic lockdown to examine potential changes. We asked participants from the ongoing open cohort Dortmund Nutritional and Anthropometric Longitudinally Designed (DONALD) study to fill out the Munich Chronotype Questionnaire during the COVID-19 lockdown and received the information of participants (n = 66) during the pandemic. A reference group matched for age, season, and sex was randomly selected from the DONALD study to assess participants’ chronobiological characteristics prior to (n = 132) the pandemic. Analyses of covariance were applied to examine differences between the two groups reflecting the situation before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants were aged 9–18 years (52% males). In the current examination, average sleep duration across the week was higher among adolescents during the pandemic (β = 00:30; p = 0.0006) and social jetlag was significantly lower (β =  −00:39; p < 0.0001).
Conclusion: Our results showed that the COVID-19 lockdown enabled adolescents to adapt their sleeping habits according to their naturally late chronotype, which led to a significant reduction in SJL. These observations are likely to be explained by the effect of school closure.

text:
Young adults with a later chronotype are vulnerable for a discrepancy
in sleep rhythm between work- and free days, called social jet lag (SJL). This
study analysed (i) chronotype/SJL association with visceral fat/skeletal muscle
mass, (ii) the attribution to physical activity behaviour, and (iii) chronotype-specific
changes in physical activity behaviour in young adults during the Covid-19 pandemic
lockdown. Chronotype and SJL were derived from the Munich-Chrono-Type-Questionnaire
in 320 German students (age 18–25 years) from September 2019 to January 2020,
156 of these participated in an online follow-up survey in June 2020. Body composition
was assessed by bioimpedance analysis at baseline. Multivariable linear regression
analyses were used to relate chronotype/SJL to body composition; the contribution
of self-reported physical activity was tested by mediation analysis. At baseline,
a later chronotype and a larger SJL were associated with a higher visceral fat
mass (P<0.05), this relation was notably mediated by the attention to physical
activity (P<0.05). Chronotype (P = 0.02) but not SJL (P = 0.87) was inversely
associated with skeletal muscle mass. During the pandemic lockdown, chronotype
hardly changed, but SJL was reduced. Timing and physical activity behaviour remained
in most participants and changes were unrelated to chronotype (all P>0.07).
A later chronotype/higher SJL may increase the risk of a higher visceral fat mass
even in this relatively healthy sample, which may be partly due to their physical
activity behaviour. Despite a reduction in SJL during the pandemic lockdown, later
chronotypes did not change their physical activity behaviour more than earlier
chronotypes.

text:
The crystal family of potassium titanyl phosphate (KTiOPO4) is a promising
material group for applications in quantum and nonlinear optics. The fabrication
of low-loss optical waveguides, as well as high-grade periodically poled ferroelectric
domain structures, requires a profound understanding of the material properties
and crystal structure. In this regard, Raman spectroscopy offers the possibility
to study and visualize domain structures, strain, defects, and the local stoichiometry,
which are all factors impacting device performance. However, the accurate interpretation
of Raman spectra and their changes with respect to extrinsic and intrinsic defects
requires a thorough assignment of the Raman modes to their respective crystal
features, which to date is only partly conducted based on phenomenological modelling.
To address this issue, we calculated the phonon spectra of potassium titanyl phosphate
and the related compounds rubidium titanyl phosphate (RbTiOPO4) and potassium
titanyl arsenate (KTiOAsO4) based on density functional theory and compared them
with experimental data. Overall, this allows us to assign various spectral features
to eigenmodes of lattice substructures with improved detail compared to previous
assignments. Nevertheless, the analysis also shows that not all features of the
spectra can unambigiously be explained yet. A possible explanation might be that
defects or long range fields not included in the modeling play a crucial rule
for the resulting Raman spectrum. In conclusion, this work provides an improved
foundation into the vibrational properties in the KTiOPO4 material family.

text: '
Batteries based on heavier alkali ions are considered promising candidates
to substitute for current Li-based technologies. In this theoretical study, we
characterize the structural properties of a novel material, i.e., F-doped RbTiOPO4
(RbTiPO4F, RTP:F), and discuss aspects of its electrochemical performance in Rb-ion
batteries (RIBs) using density functional theory (DFT). According to our calculations,
RTP:F is expected to retain the so-called KTiOPO4 (KTP)-type structure, with lattice
parameters of 13.236 Å, 6.616 Å, and 10.945 Å. Due to the doping with F, the crystal
features eight extra electrons per unit cell, whereby each of these electrons
is trapped by one of the surrounding Ti atoms in the cell. Notably, the ground
state of the system corresponds to a ferromagnetic spin configuration (i.e., S=4).
The deintercalation of Rb leads to the oxidation of the Ti atoms in the cell (i.e.,
from Ti3+ to Ti4+) and to reduced magnetic moments. The material promises interesting
electrochemical properties for the cathode: rather high average voltages above
2.8 V and modest volume shrinkages below 13% even in the fully deintercalated
case are predicted.
'

text:
The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers (NCVSi)− in 4H silicon carbide (SiC)
constitute an ensemble of spin S = 1 solid state qubits interacting with the surrounding
14N and 29Si nuclei. As quantum applications based on a polarization transfer
from the electron spin to the nuclei require the knowledge of the electron–nuclear
interaction parameters, we have used high-frequency (94 GHz) electron–nuclear
double resonance spectroscopy combined with first-principles density functional
theory to investigate the hyperfine and nuclear quadrupole interactions of the
basal and axial NV centers. We observed that the four inequivalent NV configurations
(hk, kh, hh, and kk) exhibit different electron–nuclear interaction parameters,
suggesting that each NV center may act as a separate optically addressable qubit.
Finally, we rationalized the observed differences in terms of distinctions in
the local atomic structures of the NV configurations. Thus, our results provide
the basic knowledge for an extension of quantum protocols involving the 14N nuclear
spin.

text: Explanation has been identified as an important capability for AI-based systems,
but research on systematic strategies for achieving understanding in interaction
with such systems is still sparse. Negation is a linguistic strategy that is often
used in explanations. It creates a contrast space between the affirmed and the
negated item that enriches explaining processes with additional contextual information.
While negation in human speech has been shown to lead to higher processing costs
and worse task performance in terms of recall or action execution when used in
isolation, it can decrease processing costs when used in context. So far, it has
not been considered as a guiding strategy for explanations in human-robot interaction.
We conducted an empirical study to investigate the use of negation as a guiding
strategy in explanatory human-robot dialogue, in which a virtual robot explains
tasks and possible actions to a human explainee to solve them in terms of gestures
on a touchscreen. Our results show that negation vs. affirmation 1) increases
processing costs measured as reaction time and 2) increases several aspects of
task performance. While there was no significant effect of negation on the number
of initially correctly executed gestures, we found a significantly lower number
of attempts—measured as breaks in the finger movement data before the correct
gesture was carried out—when being instructed through a negation. We further found
that the gestures significantly resembled the presented prototype gesture more
following an instruction with a negation as opposed to an affirmation. Also, the
participants rated the benefit of contrastive vs. affirmative explanations significantly
higher. Repeating the instructions decreased the effects of negation, yielding
similar processing costs and task performance measures for negation and affirmation
after several iterations. We discuss our results with respect to possible effects
of negation on linguistic processing of explanations and limitations of our study.
